COULD a Class 60 LOCO have an EMD ENGINE fitted....?

- 60014 has been moved from Toton TMD to Electromotive Longport for further evaluation - Is it a possibility that class 60 locos could be re-engineered with GM EMD engines like the class 56/69 project..?
Is a ying-ying sounding class 60 a real possibility..??
See the condition of 60014 onsite at Longport, with various other class 56 & 69 locos in differing conditions also. Ground based views of 60014 are currently limited due to it's position behind 66048 so aerial shots are also included.
Let me know your thoughts on this in the comments.
Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching.

Great video, especially capturing the progression from donor class 56 to complete Class 69. Excellent drone work too. 👍 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
You have a standard all of your own keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
Hi many thanks for posting your lovely video on UA-cam very nice camera work as usual cracking video well done bye for now Philip
What a cracking idea and brilliant drone work as usual well done mate
Cheers Kevin 👍
Once again, amazing video❤❤
Thank you 🙏👍
Great video and very interesting. This has got to be the most interesting place for railway activity, recovering old locos and giving them a new life. Far more interesting than anything new these days, and it's British. 👍
EMD (Progress Rail) is part of Caterpillar Inc. Last time I checked, Caterpillar is AMERICAN, not British.
Cracking footage 👍
Watch this space with the Class 60’s !!!
Got to be better than them rotting away at Toton
Superb content creation again thank you
Thanks again - glad you liked it 👍
Nice vid, I was there on Saturday
Excellent idea! It would be a cost-effective way to get "new" locomotives. The class 57 and the class 69 are perfect examples of how it can be done.
Hasn't gone that well though has it? 69s been out of traffic for months and didn't do too well on the Mountfield gypsum runs. Should of left the original Ruston engines in and did work on the traction control instead.
It's very logical. It would sure be more reliable than the Mirrlees. And since whatever engine's installed doesn't have a bearing on tractive effort, which comes from the traction motors, it should be suitable for the heavy haulage jobs that the 60s are used for
Not sure about the any engine thing. Engines have different power and torque profiles. 2 stroke US diesels have less low speed torque compared to a slower revving big 4 stroke. This must make them different.
A hundred percent yes! An EMD 12-710 could be engineered into a class 60 i've been saying it for ages the class 60's at toton have no use so might aswell make them class 69/1's and change the electrical system considering how complicated the 60s are underneath and yet everybody says about my opinion that that wiring for that would be too complicated yet you could start wiring from scratch. Also great video by the way!
that burned out shed needs cutting up as what use is it now as it's been cannibalised to death!!!
Idea works, just for emissions purposes they'd have to either do as they have done with the 56 rebuild and find a stack of redundant 10-710s that the 60 could use with Grandfather rights (assuming it's old enough to qualify), or use a different, newer and more emissions-compliant engine. EG a Caterpillar engine in a 60 would be very interesting!
Does any one remember when the first class 56 came to the UK from Romania, when they hit a certain speed they did the shack rattle and role as for the class 60 it's a shame there's so many sat rotten away when they could be put back to good use , converting them shouldn't be to hard to do, we have the technology to do it,
Put class 68 engines in the 60’s 😈
710 can't be bolted to the 60's generator as was looked at back in 2012.
Yes! Do something with all those 60s! maybe the 92s could have something done as well seeing as they’re the same body shell?
Hopefully a solution can be found to get them back into mainline use - Anything is better than years of endless storage.
Nice sleeper wagon still in use with a railway company not in preservation
Maybe not Aladdin but ‘new locos for old’ has to be better than ‘new lamps for old’.
Cracking video!
Exquisite drone footage too!
There is no reason why the 60’s cant be reworked. I imagine EMD710 power units will be readily available from out of use traction in the USA or Canada.
Watch this space, methinks?
Cheers Darren.. Hopefully so! 👍
Great video 👍
On the ‘Young Rail Professionals’ channel (2 years ago) there is an interview with Bob Tiller, GBRf’s engineering director. He stated that they did approach DB Cargo with a view to obtaining some of their 60’s to refit with EMD kit. Apparently they were not interested and seemingly quite happy to let them rot in the Toton yard. Shame.
Hi Fred, Hopefully the appetite has now changed and some solutions can be found 👍
@@trainsplanes I forgot to mention, fabulous filming by the way, great effort! Yes, let’s hope so. It would be such a waste of these potentially incredible locomotives, especially in this age of ‘recycling’. I’ve heard drivers say that 60’s will move loads, where 66’s struggle & that saying a lot. Lets face it 66’s are amazing.
@@pablotoo Cheers Fred..
Blast from the past with the 56 & 60 both still in the old triple grey livery with sector markings...
Realy interesting video.😊
Thanks John 👍
Please no.....that would be my worse nightmare...the best British diesel locomotive fitted with one of those. The condition of 014 is actually quite remarkable considering its been languishing for 10 years...shows how well they were made in a way and what a waste of decent locos due to the downturn in traffic.
On external views - 014 does look in very good condition. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with it now.
Nothing wrong with the 60s the way they were , the only thing is the 60mph top speed. The 69s would have been ok if they had of kept the 56s drivers desk.
@@railfangig6699 Is that an opinion of a driver, or of a railfan?
@@andrewreynolds4949 driver
A complete and utter waste indeed. The blame solely goes to EWS who ran them down purposely, they wanted to make it harder for any other interested party to get them back up and running again.
I'm fed up of the 'stick the Paxman back' comments about the 69s (Yingrids as I call them). We didn't get the 'stick the Sulzer back' comments with the Class 57s (Yingduffs); I don't think a 'Yingtug' would get the same reaction as they were always derided by UK railfans for replacing classic BR traction in the 80s-90s, same as with the 66s. Yet the 60s began to attract increased interest as they became the 'classic traction' in a sea of 66s...
I passed through Longport on the way to / from the Battle of Nantwich in January but didn't notice EMD / Progress Rail.
You can see Longport station in the video, it's a 5 minute walk from there.
Yea I think it is entirely possible that 60014 could be re engined a gm power unit the fact that it is there for evaluation suggests that it is a contender for re engining it would suggest that the class 60’s or whatever re classification they become after re engineering that perhaps they still have a future
Good video nice to see there is a future for the class 60s hopefully! as its time they was reinstated back into traffic again! as they was the last British locomotives built in the UK sadly!!! 😎
Hi Justin, I suspect that will be unlikely under DB now - Hopefully those that GBRf have agreements for can be re-engineered.
With the absence of movement in the video the drone shots look like a remarkably detailed model railway. Maybe it's the unusual overhead aspect of the picture that does it.
All those locomotives that are potentially fixable should be saved and the rest scrapped. The railway now needs as much traction as it can get.
Bring on the Yingtugs; I'm surprised EWS didn't think of it 20 years ago...
because the owner is cheap.
it will be a new engine, but not an EMD 710 series engine.
Another manufacturer is doing the project.
Hi James, which manufacturer is running the project..?
Who else is there? MTU? Caterpillar?
@@AndreiTupolev I'd say Caterpillar is they own Progress Rail. Don't see why Progress Rail couldn't fit a Caterpillar engine same as the 68 in a 66 now they own it!
@@danielsellers8707 and, with axle loading limits, plus euro6 requirements....
Class 69 mark 2 !!
I would use the Class 61 number as that was originally planned for the Class 66. The EMU units with 61xxx numbered coaches had largely been withdrawn by the time of the Class 66 introduction...
British Rail had designs for a Class 61 / 62 that was a 75mph version of the Class 60; it was never introduced due to privatisation. If BR hadn't been privatised the Class 61 would have been used on the traffic where Freightliner uses its 75mph Class 66/6s.
Wow. I wonder how many class 60s could be salvaged?.
Not sure - Lots of the stored locos have been used as parts donors for those still operational.
Lots of changes at Longport depot since I retired from there in 2016 .
have we got an update on 66729 after it's accident last year?
Interesting. Nice to see more 69s progressing.
I can see GBRf trying to refurbish class 60s, especially since they already own a number of them. I suspect if they intend to repower them, they will want to fit whatever the new class 99s will have fitted. (I read something about it being a Cummins, but the numbers didn't match up. My guess is a Caterpillar power unit.) Progress Rail, being owned by Caterpillar offer both EMD and Caterpillar power units. They also have a lot of experience with rebuilding locomotives, and so would be the best people to consult beforehand...
GBRf don't own the 60's they use, the 60's are owned by Beacon Rail and leased to GBRf.
@@EwanGVids That doesn't prevent them from buying some, like they did with the class 56/69 program, if they do decide it's worth starting a rebuild program
Amazing please can u do drone footage of reading traincare depot please and Acton yard to
Have the vibration problems with the 69s been sorted out, then?
Most of them are back in service now - 002 and 004 are still at Longport. 005 hasn’t been yet - All of the others are back earning their keep again. 👍
@@trainsplanes source of vibration....
Very interesting video.
I'm not from the UK, so the question is the engine is the reason most Class 60s are shut down?
Fuel saving.
@@22pcirish Thanks a lot.
We’ll have to see if this is feasible being investigated by GBRF and progress rail. So the ball is very much in the court of the class 60
Loved the video. Passed through Longport on the diversionary route to BHM from CRE on Sunday to do some train spotting. Do you know the numbers of the Class 56 blue shell and the pilot?
56009 and 08523
@@philwignall6714 Thanks for the information. Last saw both 11/10/21 and 23/07/03 at Longport and CD respectively.
Who knows. Enter the class 61,or 62-65!! I love driving the 60's,and drive 66's every day. Not signed 69's yet but makes me wonder about the EMD in the Brush 60 bodyshell. If,they do it,then it would likely pave the way for our 60's to lose their Mirrlees Blsckstone 8MB275T power unit. Would be a shame. We shall see.
Mirrlees Blackstone 8MB275T way more fuel efficient than an EMD engine. I can't see why they can't just leave things alone.
@@EwanGVids because the engine is as durable as a tin can.
@@rearspeaker6364 You have no clue what you're on about.
@@EwanGVids then why is the engine is not half as reliable as a 12-710??
@rearspeaker6364 Have you got the official stats to back it up? The 60's achieved 95% reliability in acceptance tests, that's what has been published in books, unless they are lying for some silly reason?
I want to know if that blackened Class 66 can be rescued and put back into service???
Hi SJ, it’s just a shell and a battered one at that so will almost certainly be scrapped at some point.
@@trainsplanes Is that the one that crashed in Scotland with frozen brakes?
Recycling some old locos just has to be more cost effective and environmentally friendly tHan exclusive new build.
I think all the class 60's should be powered by EMD, GE and of course the Catapilla diesel engines. Rated at 4,000, 4,300 and 4,500 horsepower.
Would this be the start of the Class 63 project? I think this is a great idea and I hope it works out. Although it would likely sound more like an EMD SD70ACe than a Class 66 especially if they use AC traction motors and the possible addition of dynamic braking too. Personally had the Class 60's had the CPU from GE. They would have been more reliable from their days of BR. Exciting times ahead and if this all goes well. Maybe more could be converted. Also the ex-Class 92's could become Class 62's or Class 64's.
Won't be getting any EMDs if rebuilt because they don't meet the emissions regulations any more, and 60s don't have the same grandfather rights as 56s. MTU or Caterpillar is more likely. This all assumes they actually decide to rebuild any, which they currently don't have a concrete plan to do!
@@al66class59 guess the UK's grandfathering rights are different from the US version....... can't put an early 90's 16-710 in it?
Clue. May end up with a pantograph and an engine.
@@22pcirish sounds like what would happen if you fused a 60 with a 92 - which would be a sight to behold…
I have heard some suggestions a Caterpillar engine is most likely to fit, which in itself would be interesting to hear from a 60 shell, but to see a pantograph on top of a 60 shell would be very odd indeed!
@@rearspeaker6364 the EMDs don’t fit in the shell anyway, but whatever engine it may receive has to meet newer Euro emissions regulations than with the class 69. The grandfather rights aren’t quite as expansive for the newer locos as far as I can tell.
I said ten years ago to senior DB management about fitting a 4000 hp GM engine into a 60 . I even said it again in a video I made six years ago on my own channel. I have worked on 56's 60's and 66's from new
that would be a rail ripper!!
What about the class 58s there are dozens of them sat in France abandoned. They could be brought back and re engineered , rebuilt with new 710 or mtu engines and put back into service. The 58s are a modular design with heavy strong chassis and bogies. The cabs are similar to a 66 and could be fitted with the same EMD equipment.
GBRF did look at putting the EMD engine into the 58, but apparently it wouldn't fit without massive work.
Not any more, they are all being cut as we speak, see WNXX news....
Sadly the 58s are being cut up on site now, not long before they have all gone
If they did, it would be better with a 16-710 and a complete change to modern A/C traction motors. The 60 has no purpose but heavy freight for which it was a notorious brute of an engine.
latest rumors state that they've looked at the sheel of the 60 and it won't take the GM engine but will take the caterpillar or MTU power unit, going by the sound they make i hope there will be a load of 60's with cat power inside.
I’ll sign up for that also.. Hopefully they can get a number of these re-engineered and active again 🙏👍
It would also have to be Euro V compliant, which the 710s (as far as I know) aren't. So that's probably the end of the EMD idea, but MTU and Caterpillar are indeed among the other possible options...
If (and it’s a big IF) anyone is prepared to do the conversion. The brand new Bimode class 99’s being built in Spain are the class 66 replacement.
Odd seeing a diesel named for the inventor of the steam locomotive.
That’s very true - Happy it’s in use rather than parked up 👌👍
I hate that they fitted the ugly light units when the class 56 lights were absolutely up to task & looked better, just a waste of money to make the loco look silly.
I dont think it will be a 710 engine, more than likely be a CAT engine of some sort. possibly the same as the class 68.
that's my thoughts,, there would be plenty of space too in a sixty shell.
@@mrbluesky2050 and with ad-blue, euro6 compliant.
I do hope the Class 60 will have a 4000+ hp engine fitted by EMD. To be dubbed the Super 60s.
Doesn't make much sense to pair an old locomotive with an old engine that itself doesn't meet the requirements of the emission regulations. This is a stillborn child, but in the end typical of the British-managed British railroads
Why would you want to re engine the class 60 with an EMD power train ? The engine in the class 60 is by far the best part of it, it’s let down by its electrical complexity, not its engine.
What happened to the once great railway nation of great britain? Can't you build your own locomotives anymore? And therefore need to put antique murrican 2 stroke dieses in everything?
No…….like everything else they’ll be scrapping them
Might as well re-engine these workhorses instead of buying more probable chinese parted stuff off the yanks.
Didn't know the yanks are chinese?????
Why are GBRf so obsessed with altering things that already work?
The 73/9's are a pile of crap and are so unreliable compared to the original EE 73/1's and 73/2's. That's probably why there are still 73/1s & 73/2's knocking about untouched!
The Mirrlees engine in the 60's is still one of the most fuel efficient engines out there, way more efficient than any EMD engine. This is all a con, probably comes down to money as per usual, no interest in fuel economy or emissions.
Please No!
why bother when there are already too many freight engines
evidently not enough for GBRf since they're still importing European class 66s whenever they get the chance
@@james123212 they have scavenging them anywhere now.
Yes but it would have to be cost effective for the rolling stock companies to go ahead and fund it.
Good locos turned into body snatchers.

Unreliable locos
Completely agree. No need to alter something that works perfectly fine, like the working examples have done for the last 30 odd years
Give them caterpillar engines instead. Cleaner and loud
Forgive me but what is an EMD engine?
Hi Anna, EMD stands for Electro-Motive Diesel. It’s a US manufacturer of engines which are being fitted to the Class 69’s. 👍
