Cheeky thumbs up to the fellow Porsche enthusiast. 😉The way this was put together reminded me of some of the early 2000s top gear. Cracking car again.

You low-key told us you’ve let the oil get too dirty. You changed it but didn’t say anything right? This is a classic extended oil change interval problem. Many cars are very sensitive to oil cleanliness when it comes to these cam phaser solenoids. If you don’t pull the solenoids to check and clean them, then at least change the oil and filter. The detergent additive package in the new oil will help free up the solenoids if they’re gummed up.

Great video. I have the same problem on my 981. New VVT actuators going in shortly. I’d add - make sure your oil is changed regularly

Thanks for this great video!! I have had a similar issue with my 996 4S. Also changed spark plugs and ignition coils. At first that did the trick, but if came back, but mostly after the car has not been used for a while, or using it just pottering about town. Driving it hard for a couple of hours just seems to solve it.

Good advice, my gen2 996 has an intermittent misfire, always cylinder 5, my Porsche specialist, tried spark plug and coil pack the first time, swopped injectors the next time, now they are claiming its down to a sticking hydraulic lifter, an expensive fix, replacing all the lifters on the defective bank. But what if that is not the defect?

My 2002 targa is making exactly the same noise as yours. Has that now disappeared on yours? What oil are you using btw?

    • @Motorhaus

Haven't heard that clattering noise now for 4-500 miles. I'm confident it was purely related to the Variocam system being locked in at idle when it shouldn't have been.
The last service I used 5w50 Millers fully synthetic although at the next service I will be using 10w50 Millers Nanodrive. These are old and generally high mileage engines now and definitely benefit from thicker oil.

That noise popped up on my 2003. It was bore scoring. I would drop the sump and use a boroscope as well as check for metallic debris.

Personally? Number 1. Go to your trusted independent. Get it plugged into diagnostics first!
