Everyone forgets he has a secret super power. Its called "Face of the Company" and it grants Absolute Plot Armor. Peter could fight and beat The One Above All, without any difficulty.
@@TheLastSane1 That's Batman. I'm not saying Spiderman doesn't have plot armor, but his victories are usually due to his absolutely insane power set, skill and intelligence. Batman relies on plot armor in the DC world where COUNTLESS villains and heroes could speed blitz him before he could even activate a contingency plan.
Spiderman has Superhuman strength, speed, agility, precognition to attacks around him and incredible versatility and intelligence. And if he's serious, his uses his physical ability tiers that he usually limits to be the friendly neighborhood spiderman.
He is not even close to the strongest marvel hero, but one could argue he's the hardest to pin down. He has so few weaknesses.

these little plot quirks happen constantly in the comics, people just accept them now. it happens because the stories get rushed and by the time they realize the plot problems they are a couple issues down the line already. only solution at that point is to resolve it with some off the wall bizarre explanation or just ignore it hope people will forget about it, both of these happen constantly in the comics. it's also why movies can't really stay true to the comics. comics fans are used to just accepting or ignoring these kinds of plot issues, but they would never fly in movies.

I've never heard of this story arc, but I would bet money that's the artwork of John Romita Jr, AKA JRJR. I'd recognize his style anywhere. I honestly would read a Marvel title literally for no other reason than because he drew it. I don't even care what the character is, because he can do everyone.
But yeah, he does like to draw scrapes and bruises and broken noses like that. You should see how that looks on more aggressive characters like Hulk, or Daredevil. There's a LOT of gritty texture.

Funfact while most of today puts Spiderman's strength at about 10 tons (the Spiderman back when I was growing up started out twice that at 20 tons), the Spiderman in comics has lifted weight above 100 tons on several occasions.
Spiderman just hold back a lot, even beat enemies just by tapping them, but god of he is quiet an not throwing puns and quips you better hide.... And quiet Spiderman is a scary, deadly and very pissed Spiderman....
I mean a human being can lift like 6000 lbs on a back press (world record tbf) but can't bench more than 1100. So yeah it makes sense that he could lift weight around 100 tons mostly due to the writers having n clue how much something should weigh.
This is backed up by when he beats down on kingpin for harming aunt may. its one of a handful of comics that proves he could kill anyone in his rouge's gallery if he really wanted to but just like you said "spiderman holds back alot"

People really don’t understand how crazy strong spider man really is because one: he looks so scrawny compared to other supers and mutants and two: spider man always pulls his punches, even if it means he could possibly die, he never wants to lose control and kill someone by accident because even he underestimates his own strength
But that is pretty much every Hero in all of Marvel and DC.
If Ironman went all out killskill he would have Stark Industrie up in action in no time making weapons that could kill gods easily. Pushing human technology to insane levels in a very short period of time. But he holds back. His suit is designed to be less lethal and more damage control and speciality against supervillains in a very non lethal way.
Thor could litteraly turn earth into a ball of volcanoes.
The hulk could let loose and would eventually kill everyone and everything on earth and then just head out into space to continue. . .

It's rare to see spiderman go against stuff he has to use his full strength on so it's easy to forget that Cap is really weak compared to Spidey. Spiderman is the local neighborhood hero after all.

ocotpus, croc, Goblin and some others are supposed to have one or several traits that put them on par with Spiderman.
Green goblin being one of the worst since he has both the intellect, strenght and only somewhat slower on speed and reaction speed.

So you kinda have to look at what the most popular versions are and the trends that appear in those and weigh that more heavily than versions that are less well known. Its more art than it is science figuring out the perception of a character.

Using the MCU "fight" between Cap and Spidey as any form of reference point is hilarious. Peter has not used even a fraction of his real strength in the MCU yet.

I am referring the fight between cap and spiderman during the civil war storyline in the comics in which spiderman had his iron spider suit and was getting his ass kicked due to caps superior tactic, mental abilities and combat knower and abilities. Cap instinctively adepts to every fighting style and situation which gave him the edge. Cap had enough strength to spidermans attacks and has enough strength to hurt peter. Plus he is fast enough to keep up. Spiderman never hit cap until he used his robotic arms, which cap had no knowledge of and after that he was still kicking his ass. Also the sixth sense part regarded the fact that cap also has something similar to the spidey sense which also helps him kn fights. Comic caps bas strength is around 5-10 tons, he is also superhuman like spiderman. Also wrong, it gives cap enough dexterity and speed to keep up with spiderman. Plus his combat speed is just as fast as spidermans. Cap has acrobatic skills on spidermans level and fast enough reflexes to fight him. What gives cap the edge are his mental abilities that also got enhanced on superhuman level which is not the case with spiderman. Cap can think faster than spiderman and can use his brain more efficiently when it comes to combat, tactics and strategy especially in fights. Caps combat experience is miles aboves spidermans aswell, ranging up to +112 years.

This really makes no sense considering both characters have respect for each other and have helped each other out before. Heck in one comic Cap goes to JJJ and demands that he change his story to portray spiderman in a better light. I swear they just love to create conflict out of thin air.
