    Intro: There is a Garmin smartwatch that during my testing has been outperforming some of the more expensive models in one specific area, and it doesn’t even look like a smartwatch. I’m talking about the Garmin Vivomove Sport. Over the last weeks I’ve really grown to like this 180 dollar smartwatch, which seems to be punching above its weight in some areas, though it also performs less well in other areas. This hybrid smartwatch sticks much closer to a traditional watch design, and might therefore be a good compromise for those people that do not like the look of a smartwatch but still want to track their health. The watch has a small relatively low resolution touchscreen hidden near the bottom of the watchface to enable some smartwatch features. In this video I’ll test the sleep tracking, heart rate tracking, oxygen saturation and step counting of the Garmin Vivomove Sport. I will also briefly compare the Vivomove Sport to the Garmin Venu 2 Plus and the Garmin Fenix 7. I won’t do a GPS accuracy check, since this watch does not have built-in GPS. Instead, it uses the GPS of your phone during outdoor exercises. Now, the first few days I had to get used to the touchscreen, especially since the watch does not have any physical buttons at all. However, once I got used to it, I have to say, it worked quite well. It is also nice to see that the hands of the watch move to a quarter past nine once you start using the touch screen, making sure that the whole screen is visible no matter what time it is. One downside compared to some other Garmin watches is the battery life; it is not bad, but at best it is average, coming in at up to 5 days according to Garmin.
    Conclusions:
    Now, it is interesting to see that the sleep tracking appears to be quite good on this relatively cheap Garmin watch, whereas other Garmin models show sleep stage patterns that are not like what my normal sleep cycles are like. I hope this is either a matter of software updates needing to be performed on other models, or that in time the algorithm will improve because it has more of your data to tweak the model. Based on the results I showed here, I would recommend the Vivomove Sport for sleep tracking if you are interested in tracking your sleep stages and cycles. As with many watches, I would suggest pairing an ECG chest strap to it if you are interested in tracking your heart rate whilst doing sports. However, given that the Vivomove Sport was quite OK during static indoor exercises, I would expect it to be good enough for heart rate tracking when resting. The SpO2 tracking and step counting appear to be reasonable based on the limited tests I did, but additional testing is needed for more definitive conclusions on their overall accuracy.

    I love the intro, this one was really cool. I think the editing has improved a ton. I have a vivomove luxe, it looks like this is extremely similar but at great price point. I really like my vivomove and I think it's health tracking has been pretty solid. I feel like my experiences generally agree with your findings (but that may just be the power of suggestion). Excellent video! This is very exciting that the sleep tracking is so accurate. Sleep tracking is my main interest in a smart watch. Given that, would you recommend the Vivomove Sport over a Fitbit device, or are the Fitbits still somewhat better?

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  2 роки тому +1

      Hi! I think based on just this n=1 experiment (I am the only subject) without the perfect polysomnography reference it is difficult to say if Fitbit or the Vivomove sport is better. The downside of Fitbit is that they lock some of their metric behind a paywall... However, you can get some Fitbits for relatively cheap

    Great Review, Rob. One question: Maybe you have already made such a video, but what I would really appreciate is a video from you that details the current state-of-the-art regarding how to interpret sleep data, that is, what are the paramters that one might try to optimize (is more deep sleep always "better" sleep, etc.). I am sure about the consensus in the scientific literature on these questions, but it would be great to hear from an expert.

    Would love to see what you think of the Fossil Hybrid HR series.
    Similar to the VivoMove sport, it uses traditional analogue hands but the face is an e-ink display that lets me go 10-12 days between charges. So far though, while I love the design both in style and functionality - I feel like this might be one of the worst in terms of accuracy.
    Sleep tracking is just horribly wrong.. and the 24 hour heartrate readings frequently miss when my pulse spikes over 150 (due to the condition POTS). If I manually initiate a pulse reading it seems pretty good so I guess the background measurements are just spread out too much and so miss the variations.
    For reference, there are many varieties of the Hybrid HR (I have the gold and white Charter model), but from what I've seen they all have identical hardware inside just with a different case/strap. They are also sold under the Skagen branding, again though with seemingly the same hardware and functionality

    Nice Confusion Matrix! Wonder if weighted color shading the cells (normalized within each vertical category of ground truth) might help with data visualization?
    I've been researching a wearable that would fit my requirements, and been zeroing in on this particular one. Your analysis in this video + the previous videos helped me finalized my decision. Just ordered a Vivomove Sport! :D
    Background: 50+ yr old semi-active overweight male with severe OSA (10 yr reliant CPAP user). iPhone/Mac user, but am also in Garmin Connect ecosystem via bike computer (Edge 530). Goal of Vivomove Sport for me is daily health/fitness + sleep tracking with occasional hiking and lap swimming, while NOT needing to be constantly 'connected' on my wrist. Looking forward to trying out Garmin's Advanced Sleep Tracking & Body Battery features. Will consider a separate 2nd Garmin watch with onboard GPS for long hikes / backpacking use later, thus Connected GPS capability of Vivomove Sport is perfect for now.
    Bedankt!

      Happy you ordered the vivomove Sport! Please note that I mentioned in the video you can connect a, ECG chest strap directly to the watch, but I misunderstood the specs, and it seems it can only broadcast an not receive, so please be aware of that.🙏🏽

      Hi Chris! Indeed the Dreem 2 is also not perfect, but I think it is close enough for these kind of tests. Even two people scoring the exact same PSG data would only agree about 85-90% of the time, and the Dreem 2 was close to this with over 80% agreement. It would be difficult to calculate uncertainties with just this info, though I have been thinking if that is possible.

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  2 роки тому +5

      Hey! There is not "one-size-fits-all" answer unfortunately. My first thoughts: The Oura Ring is good for general health tracking (but not sport or sleep stages), the Fitbits are good at sleep staging, not at heart rate. The Whoop Strap is pretty good at most things (though only OK for heart rate for instance), but it is quite expensive. The Apple Watch is by far the best at heart rate, and the best smartwatch.

      @TheQuantifiedScientist  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Noel! Honestly, I am not sure. For biking maybe, weightlifting probably not. Also with biking there will sometime be tension on my wrist that could interfere with the measurements... Honestly, I think this can only partially be overcome. Better firmware might improve it though

      @@TheQuantifiedScientist About the tension on the wrist, I bought a Venu 2s (thanks to your earlier review of the Venu 2!) and the strap becomes too tight when I flex my fingers. Hi Leonid! I don't have any plans at the moment. Honestly, this is would be a gigantic undertaking. First of all, I think Apple has figured out a way of doing great heart rate tracking. Not sure if that is due to the hardware of software. However, I expect AI will become more and more important in this, where we can start recognising heart rate better. I also expect the algorithms to become more personalised, and to automatically tweak to the users characteristics to improve accuracy for all metric (e.g. detect someone has poor blood flow, dark skin, or tends to be still during sleep).

    • @leonidpiliptsevich5329

      @@TheQuantifiedScientist Maybe focus on software and research then? I guess many people would donate data to you as well as do it with fitbit, garmin, apple and all of them. Also do you think it is possible to make smth like garmin body battery or readiness score as a service? I would love a nice device that only collects data and then transfer it to independent industry leader in bio data analysis that would tell me what it means.
