    If there isn't snow on the ground, are you really in Canada, and not some tropical oasis? I think that you should at least pull the head off of the Pontiac. Since the valves are in the block, it should be easy. You could clean the tops of the pistons, and maybe around the valves. If you're careful you can reuse the head gasket.

    • @CarterAutoRestyling
      @CarterAutoRestyling  5 місяців тому +4

      I was thinking the same, won't hurt to at least have a look at what's going on inside. I think I'll wait to pull the head until it's moved inside the garage so I don't have to push it haha.

    When it was spinning over with plugs in it sounds like not all cylinders have compression. Probably some stuck valves. Some valves might be accessible through the plug holes and may be able to be tapped down. I did like the good access you had to the clutch. You couldn't free off a flathead ford like that. Nice job on the rust. I need something like that for my 32 sedan. That's a job I'm not looking forward to. Oh yeah, my views have tanked too, but I put that down to the T-Bird not being as popular as the 100E. Ok mate, catch you next time! Mart.

    • @CarterAutoRestyling

      Hi Mart. Thanks for your input on the Pontiac engine. I think once I get the car moved inside, I'll pull the head off so I have full access to mess with the valves. Ps. Nice work getting the T bird to run on 4 barrels! It sounds great!

    Battery sponsors? I sure need a oil and transfusion oil sponsor 🤣. I'm sure someone from Cuba is watching this and thinking like what the hell are you doing to this car. Flooded cars are a kind of nightmare just like a engine full of mouse house or it having furry pistons inside. Good thing this has a mechanical clutch so with some work the flywheel is salvageable but the clutch friction plate maybe too far gone. Not sure you can even get a replacement clutch for these anymore. Ring gear might need investigating further if the teeth are not chipped off it can live.

    The fact that it idles as well as it does kinda says the internals of that motor are not that bad "probably". The "coughing" you are hearing in the carburetor kinda indicates you might have a stuck or burnt intake valve. Most likely stuck. If you are hearing similar poping from the exhaust, the same thing applies only on the exhaust valve side. I would try some STP additive in the oil or maybe some Marvel mystery oil. Beyond that, you are looking at removing the head to determine damage/condition. A vacuum gauge is also a simple way to determine things. A strong reading (16-18) but the needing bouncing a lot says good rings (compression) but bad valves.
    Use a "stove bolt" in the truck. A late one with pressurized oil system and hydraulic lifter if possible.

    • @CarterAutoRestyling
      @CarterAutoRestyling  5 місяців тому +2

      Thanks for the input. I did put a vacuum gauge on it but forgot to include that in the video. The needle was bouncing around so you are probably right about the valve issues. I may end up pulling the head once I get it moved into the garage for disassembly

  • @pamdunn8454
    @pamdunn8454 5 місяців тому +2

    here's a fun project for you to waist some time . . . . . . remove spark plugs and apply air with your compression tester and compressor - listen to the carburetor if you here air "bad intake valve" then exhaust (tail pipe) if you here air "bad exhaust valve" that should save you the trouble of tearing apart the engine , remember that thing probably only had 80HP new

    I dunno - all things considered, the old Pontiac ran pretty well. It's not ready for the highway but since it's been sitting for who knows how many years it could be a lot worse.
    As for the Krud Kutter, I'll bet if you put some plastic kitchen wrap over the top it would work better without drying out.

    A flathead shouldn't require that much work , even compare to a later Chevy inline six. Not to get perfect. New pistons, bearing, quick hone. Lifters. There are a lotless parts in a flathead. And it's way cooler for that truck.

    Applause for Ken. a couple a month is ok. much more than that without progress is wasteful, I agree. Be well. Cluck, Cluck.

    I have tried all manner of rust removal shit. In my opinion, if you can soak it, use Evaporust; if you can't soak it, use Ospho. Those two work well on heavy rust. On lighter stuff, I have used a Loctite and Permatex product, both in brush on and spray that leave a paintable primer surface. I have used all of these with no rust through problems on restorations. That stuff seems to work well though!

    Try some high zinc T1 Rotella 50 weight Diesel oil in it and see if it's quiet enough.

    I say.. Keep the flathead 6. Hand lap the valves. Clean the crud out of it. Rebuild that carb.
    I'd like to see you swap that dash into the truck. It's a cool looking dash, that you wouldn't see on anything else...

    Hey Kyle, love your channel! I've heard of good rust removing results with phosphoric acid. Maybe that is worth a try someday.

    I thought I recognized that car, and sure enough when I saw that clutch and flywheel it's confirmed. That was the original car used at Mrs. Puff's driving school way before SpongeBob was born.

    You can use a thin sandwich wrap over the rust remover to keep it from drying out longer.

    Thank you Kyle for the effort you put into the videos. I wish you were around doing this when I was young. (to old now) What part of Saskatchewan are you in. Kind regards.
