I have a lot of respect for the AMC line and have fond memories of racing against them. All except for the "fishbowl" car. The Javelin, AMX, Rebel Machine, Scrambler Rambler, Matador. All were sleek and if you tweaked them they were no slouch. A close friend of mine had a Gramlin X 304 that we tweaked. It got a Holley Intake & 650 with Hooker underbody headers and a cam. We got a junk yard bell housing and had a local welder move a bolt hole so a Borg Warner T-10 would bolt up, then put the Javelin 10-1/2" clutch in front of it. We shortened the drive shaft to fit and to top it all off, he bought a Hurst Super Shifter for it. We completely changed the personality of that little Gremlin. It pulled great 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear with 3.54 axle, but kind of fell off in 4th. I had a mediocre GTX w/ dana 3.55 4speed and he could almost keep up with me until we hit 4th. I saw near the beginning of the video, when you were in the field rescuing this very cool Ambassador, that there was also an one of the all-time COOLEST cars made, not just by A.M.C., but by any of the North American car companies, an A.M.C. It looks like a Plymouth, even has Chrysler rims. Sounds like my grandmothers '68 Rambler 440 American wagon. Except hers had a 199 6 cylinder. I remember it well. It was fire engine red with red interior. I grew up in the 80s so that was our main car. It was a little faded and scratched up, with a driver side purple fender that some shop didn't color match, but I loved that car. She bought it new in November of '67 and paid $2900 cash for it. It was a showroom car too and the last car she bought new. Anytime something needed to be fixed on it, my mother would do. Starter, brakes, shocks, leaf springs, flywheel, ball joints, etc. I always remember when it broke down or needed to be worked on. Mostly good memories of it. I would love to find one, along with a 1970 Hornet wagon too, but they are stupid expensive. Glad you got that Rebel running, it sounds fantastic. Keep that engine, it's too good to replace.
Cool Mopar, I think a relative in my mother's generation, back in the 60's had one. It looks vaguely familiar. Good to see your adorable baby girl again, and awake this time. Im going to look again, but Im thinking she has your eyes and her mama's smile!😊
If you didn't know it , the wheels are special , think they were called Machine Wheels , mainly found on the Rebel " The Machine " cars. Nice wheels when clean and complete.
My folks had an AMC Rebel Station wagon when I was growing up in the 80s. 3 speed manual. I was so embarrassed by it, but I would love to have it now!!! I hope to see more videos on this one, brings back a lot of memories.
The heart of the AMC that you were trying to do CPR on is the Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, and I guess AMC indestructible slant six engine, or as Josh Dillon calls it "the leaning tower of power". I call it indestructible because I and my siblings tried. My parents had six kids. In my teens, (I'm 68 today) there were three or four of us driving at any given time. To provide vehicles for that herd, my dad would go to the naval auctions at Great Lakes Naval Station and bid on the "not running" Plymouth Valiants. We would drive those things into the ground. (I wrecked two of them) Dad would pull the engines out of the wrecks and go back to the auction. So dad always had two or three functioning slant sixes on the floor of his garage. I can't tell you how many Valiant bodies we went through, but I'm pretty sure there were no more than six or seven slant sixes. After Dad passed, we kids cleared out his storage areas and found a slant six waiting for it's next body. We smiled.
This is my thoughts Mr. McCool; there aren't many of these Rebel left at all in the entire country. I would remove and replace the rusted out sections like you did with your Challenger. It will take awhile but you'll be able to find the parts, like the seats, a factory radio, front fenders, rear leaf springs, rear frame rails, etc. As far as the drivetrain you could remove THE 232 IN-LINE SIX and install an AMC 304 C.I. V8
There are shops online. One has all the floor pans and a different one has lots of performance parts and replacement badges. Even vinyl tops and stripes
On any old engine that's been sitting for a long time you should pour some oil into the cylinders or the intake to get the rings to seat and if you think the compression still isn't good mix some graphite with the oil it'll stick to the scratches in the cylinder walls. Take the plugs out and spin the engine too.
You should take out the seats and remetal the floors. Then reapohlster the back seat and put a split bench seat back into the front. You'll thank me later. Fix the back frame with new metal, for structural support. Fix the holes in the fenders. Pretty much just make it structurally sound. CLEAN THE WINDOWS. Not trying to tell you what to do, just want you to be safe. Since it's been sitting for 35 years, you might want to check all the bearings. Definitely put some oil with the right zinc additives, so as not to spin a rod bearing. Etc. Love this kind of content, just want you to be safe for yourself and everyone else on the road.
Hi Dylan and Bri nice video 📹 and workmanship that 6 CYLANDER SOUNDS REAL STRONG 💪 BUT THE FLOOR NEEDS A LAW TO GET FIXED CREEPING ME OUT !!! AND SAY HI TO THE KING FROM LITTLE PETTY FRIEND OF THE FAMILY
Dylan do you remember the rebel ,THE MACHINE,white with red and blue stripe design,I think it was the same model,it was an iconic muscle car.,keep the good work.
These 232 (3.8L) "Torque Command" 1 barrel inline sixes produced 145 HP and 215 lb ft of torque and were an extremely smooth engine that was very reliable.
I had to keep a date for Valentines day years ago and my X1/9 died. Guy I worked with at the time sold me a 67 Rebel 770 Classic 4 door. It had 4 bald snow tires and couldn't get out of it's own way until I got used to it. Kept the date, girl broke up with me any way. But I kept the car until I got the X1/9 back on the road. Transmission on the Rebel eventually went out and it only had reverse. Drove it home (7 miles) in reverse. And continued to drive it locally in reverse until the motor seized up. A friend clocked me doing almost 70 in reverse one day. So I would say i got my 75$ worth out of that car. Not as cool as the SST but turned out to be a fun car until the end. True story! God bless, stay well.
Wow, runs n drives good for having sat since 89. My first car was an early 70's AMC hornet. It was white and had the straight 6 as well. Pulled the valve cover because it had ticky lifters. Turned out the owner basically only added oil when needed. There was so much sludge in the valve cover that it filled a big gulp cup ..lol!!! Memories!!! Great job Dylan!
Love it Dylan. I own 3 Hornet Sportabout’s. AMC made such cool cars back in the day, the ole 232 is a very reliable engine. I put 20k on mine after it sat for 10 plus years.
The AMC Rebel is definitely awesome! Perfect candidate for wide tire. Since frame, trunk, and floors need replacing. New interior for family paired to a floor shift and a big block 440.
I am ready for a build series from you sir! I really enjoyed the Charger and Challenger series. They are what got me watching you in the first place. Revivals are fun and cool but I like watching one come ALL THE WAY BACK from the dead. My opinion only. I still watch and still enjoy your work, so thanks for making your videos.
Sweet old AMC! That old inline six turned out to be a gem! Also, love the 4 door F Body i spotted as you were backing out the Rebel for the first drive.
Love it Dylan! The way it runs is crazy for a car sitting since trapper keepers and mullets were popular. I've always liked the Rebel - it has a Mopar B body look. Can't wait to see what it becomes. Nice save!
My 72 fury was that color combo, more beige than the rebel which AMC seemed to have a lemon like tint to theirs. Great video, would love to see this powered by a Mopar big block, and get some attention to the body and floors. Thank you for sharing.
I was hoping the rear glass wasn’t gunna blow out while you were driving. While Briar was power washing, it lifted. The burnout at the end was awesome for a one tire fryer 😄👍
We had an AMC Hornet where the fender tops corroded on both sides I recall reading it was a common issue due to how the bodies were prepped during assembly. Also, Shift Command means a Borg Warner Automatic. Torque Command is a Chrysler based Torqueflite starting in 1972.
Not only does the AMC look really good ..nope, it looks awesome, wonderful, superb ..etc. etc. as it bowls along the highway, you look even better with a wide smile while driving it. There's just those few small snags to fix, like fitting far more comfortable seats, fix the brakes. And loose the Flintstones floor pan ..for your own safety. 'You've got to fix the floor!' I'm not going to be the only one, who's longing to see more of this car, with you in it, again! :-) I. Shane. G.
My first car in 1984 was a 67 AMC Ambassador 990 sedan. It had a 290 V8, and yes the tops of the front fenders were rusty. My dad said they all did it. Interior was mint though.paid 250 bucks for it. I wish I still had it.
It would be a good project car. Floor pan replacement on top of the to do list. Interior restore second. Replace rusted front fender third. brakes fourth. Replace wheel bearings on all four corners fifth. Overhaul/rebuild engine sixth. Replace radiator seventh. There you have it. restore body and paint optional.
My parents had a 1968 AMC Ambassador that had a Buick 289 c.i. V8, Chrysler rear end, and back in my teens, I thought it was a cool car. Your Rebel looks awesome!
westport wa.state here sirs. we called them nerd bucket's. and yes i owned a coupe of them. great for camping if you had the bench seat. a lot of them the front seat folded down and back seat. the whole inside became a bed. thank you for the show.
I had a 1974 AMC HORNET Sportabout Wagon painted army Green with wood paneling. It had the 258 straight 6, and my father and I drove it down the Alaskan highway in winter from Anchorage, Alaskan to Denton ,Texas in 1986 with perfect performance!!!! The heater was hot as hell, we got fantastic gas mileage, !
I learned to drive in the family 69 rebel sat It had v8, ps,pb. I thought that was all part of the sst package. My brother and I both had accidents in that one before we got our own. Lots of good memories
I was waiting for you to get to this one. I have a 69 Rebel 2dr. SST just like yours. Mine is green with a yellow top. It has the 290 v8 with factory air. I'm not sure what your plans are with it, but most parts are not reproduced. Ask me how I know.l 😆 it too bad you didn't get your hands on the another parts car. That will be your only way to get replacement floors. Unless you make them yourself. The floors are not reproduced, along with the gas tank. Hopefully, yours is good. Same with windshield and rear window. I couldn't even fund the drums for the front. So I decided to convert to disc. There are other parts as well. The AMC Rebel is a unique and quirky car, but you will be the only one at the car with a Rebel. Its fun to watch people walk by with a look of confusion on their faces. It's a good conversation, starter, for sure. Anyway, there are AMC vendors out there with some nice parts. I can't wait to see more of the Rebel.
Would love to see you build this, it's a sharp-looking car. Get rid of the 6 and find a big V-8. This is one of the better cars you have in my opinion.
Baby’s allowed to swipe your microphone! LOL 😂 That AMC is actually pretty cool! Grab a junk hood or something to patch the floors for now, and some seats out of whatever. I’d drive the it!
I actually saw a 1970 Reber "The Machine " in 2016 at a show at the Commack, NY branch of Miller's Ale House. I think a little over 1900 Machines were made, 52 in 1971 when it was Matador based.
I had a 72 gremlin with the 232 and a 3 in the floor very fun to drive! Air shocks in the rear and coil spring spacers in the front (a hill jumping beast)😂
Hey there, not sure if you knew , but a ford 300 inline cap and rotor will fit on there , and is an upgrade as it is much taller ,less electronics interference. And if im not mistaken amc coils are are like 18 k , so i put and ford tbi era coil on my 258 inline, and a mr gasket light spring in the dizzy , and woke that joker up into beast mode , i know were talking apples and oranges , but amc / jeep , just everyone elses parts , good day to you , cool car , glad to see it saved
my dad bought a used AMC hornet when i was about nine years old and had it until i was about fifteen..it never left us stranded, it was a good solid car.
I had 2 of these 68 rebels and A 70 rebel machine mid 1980s. In high school in 1981 I had a 68 Javelin and a 69 AMX loved my yellow with a black vinyl top 68 rebel
There's some days I thank the Lord more for the small things than the big. Today I'm grateful for Dylan McCool's channel! But wait. There's more. I think a very cool car like the Rebel (I had a 66 Rambler when I was 18 lol) should be fitted with an engine that is deserving of it's stature! Like an N54! That's right another straight 6 engine! Only this time it's one that will give out Huge power on demand (as long as it's not throwing codes LOL). But honestly why is it that these cars only get like a Small block Chevy or a Ford Windsor 351 or maybe if there's even one to find a 401ci V8 AMC. (Not likely). SO go get a whole engine and drive train from a car there are plenty of around and get the whole computer and wiring harness (Can Bus as well) and throw it into this type of beauty!!! You'll want to keep the BMW ignition and the gauges at least for the install and shove them behind the Rambler dash! But it would fire right up and BOOM Huge HP. Well maybe after a little bit of Tuning but hey why not blow some people away?? Well on second thought maybe the N54 or any other Six Cylinder from our modern cars isn't going to work. After looking a bit harder at the space under that hood I don't think you could get one in there. It look far too small. The 3 liter straight 6 engines of our day are BIG sized engines compared to even the 4.2 6 cyl of the days gone by. But maybe it is just the way the video makes it look?? I don't know.
Love the AMC inline 6’s😁 Lots of people forget that “jeep’s 4.0” is actually an amc inline 6, one of the most reliable engines ever produced.
No doubt. There are some hardcore AMC folks that almost worship these engines. The AMC 6s only. Not the Chrysler variation.
Was thinking this would be a good candidate for a 4.0L swap
So is Chrysler's 225 Slant Six, just as reliable. Ford's and Chevy's inline 6's just never held up like AMC/Jeep's & Mopar's six-cylinder engines did.
Honestly where Jeep be without the mpw from Ford, the gpw from Willy's and also the AMC 258 and 401 both AMC motors...
I don't know about that as far as Ford's go the 200,249, and 300 are fairly decent durable L6 motors ..
Unpopular opinion: This might be the coolest car you've saved. However that whole row of cars you have is pretty fantastic
AMC’s are completely under appreciated. I have a incredible 71 AMX.
Nope, you're spot on
not unpopular. love this body style

I am from Wisconsin. It's common for AMC's to rust out in the tops of their fenders. Love the look of the car
AMC is not a MOPAR. This car was made 20 years before Chrysler bought AMC.
If you didn't know it , the wheels are special , think they were called Machine Wheels , mainly found on the Rebel " The Machine " cars. Nice wheels when clean and complete.
They aren't those wheels. First of all this car is 1969, you can tell by the front. But those wheels are very rare and slightly different
Dylan Fix it up and bring it to HolleyMoparty! Need more AMCs there!
My folks had an AMC Rebel Station wagon when I was growing up in the 80s. 3 speed manual. I was so embarrassed by it, but I would love to have it now!!! I hope to see more videos on this one, brings back a lot of memories.
I learned to drive on a 1968 rebel station wagon with a 6cyl and 3 on the tree. These things were built like tanks
Yes I wish this was a Machine. Still cool though!
18:04 that’s a perfect still shot of you two right here. So precious Dylan.
Awesome car bud I love the rebel it’s really an underrated muscle car
These 232 (3.8L) "Torque Command" 1 barrel inline sixes produced 145 HP and 215 lb ft of torque and were an extremely smooth engine that was very reliable.
Briar, weld up some floor reinforcement patches, or at least some self tappers and scrap sheet metal. Mabie patch up that frame under the trunk area
My first car was a 68 Rambler American Rogue with a 232 engine! Silver grey, black vinyl top, red interior!
Love it Dylan! The way it runs is crazy for a car sitting since trapper keepers and mullets were popular. I've always liked the Rebel - it has a Mopar B body look. Can't wait to see what it becomes. Nice save!
I’ve always thought of the rebel as the AMC GTO. If you squint, you kinda see GTO
:-) I. Shane. G.
Very cool car and I love the OG power tower!! 6 cylinders are highly underrated in my opinion, glad you got it running and use it as is for mow
My first car in 1984 was a 67 AMC Ambassador 990 sedan. It had a 290 V8, and yes the tops of the front fenders were rusty. My dad said they all did it. Interior was mint though.paid 250 bucks for it. I wish I still had it.
It would nice to see a nicely restored Rebel that can go out on some events. Awesome looking cars.
What a beautiful car, reminds me of a 2 door version of some of our Australian built 4 door falcons in the 70s, especially the rear end
It would be a good project car. Floor pan replacement on top of the to do list. Interior restore second. Replace rusted front fender third. brakes fourth. Replace wheel bearings on all four corners fifth. Overhaul/rebuild engine sixth. Replace radiator seventh. There you have it. restore body and paint optional.
They always reminded me of a smaller 1969 Roadrunner in the front and a 66/67 Fairlane mixed with 1969 Dodge Dart in the back.
This made me recall my friend's mom drove an AMC Hornet which was Yellow exterior and Green interior.
One of the best channels I just don’t get to watch often enough.
1:27:12 yes please, rebuild it. Floor pans, structural things, patina, maybe a V8 swap... Challenger-Style
I learned to drive in the family 69 rebel sat
It had v8, ps,pb.
The variety that you bring back to life is just fantastic
Hey there, not sure if you knew , but a ford 300 inline cap and rotor will fit on there , and is an upgrade as it is much taller ,less electronics interference. And if im not mistaken amc coils are are like 18 k , so i put and ford tbi era coil on my 258 inline, and a mr gasket light spring in the dizzy , and woke that joker up into beast mode , i know were talking apples and oranges , but amc / jeep , just everyone elses parts , good day to you , cool car , glad to see it saved
This video put a big smile on my face! Especially the burn out. Old online 6’s don’t die.
As a Mopar guy I also think AMC had some sweet cars good job getting it up and running guys must be nice to have some good help now with Bryer
my dad bought a used AMC hornet when i was about nine years old and had it until i was about fifteen..it never left us stranded, it was a good solid car.
258 in a gremlin x with a 4 speed would smoke the tires bought in the 70s for 150 bucks now you can't find one great job brother keep on keeping on
I had 2 of these 68 rebels and A 70 rebel machine mid 1980s. In high school in 1981 I had a 68 Javelin and a 69 AMX loved my yellow with a black vinyl top 68 rebel
This is a perfect power tour car!!!!!!!! full interior resto, new floors, clean windshield
,fresh oil change, new stereo and ac
This particular AMC reminds me of the Ford Galaxie's, Both look really cool with this body style.
I've just noticed Bryar could be a young Deboss garage lookalike 😂
Dylan... look up Newcomer Racing... he specializes in 4.0 Inline 6 builds... he has turbo a few and got over 500 hp... would look good in that SST...
I'M a AMC fan most my family owned them, we had a 68 rambler, I will get an AMC hopefully one day, you should fix it up.
Hope you can get your hands on an AMC Eagle sometime. I know nothing about them, just I always liked the look of 'em. Keep up the great work. 👍
I love how the bumpers were pretty much already tucked by design.
The Rebel is crying for a V-8 and Floor Pans. Love that six for the smaller AMC Products. and a Newer Interior for the Driver.
I really enjoy Briar’s presence in the video. Keep up the good work!
