BUILD: Compass Dividers

  • I've been reading about historical layout and design lately and thought it was time I made a good quality set of compass dividers. This can be used with or without a pencil or pen. I actually enjoy filing so I opted to do the majority of the shaping by hand, unfortunately I had to buy the knurled knobs but hopefully ill get a metal lathe soon and I can replace them.

    Two things: Wow what beautiful craftsmanship.
    When I am watch there are 14 thumbs down; I can't believe that there are 14 people on this planet that are so stupid that they can't recognize a great craftsman at work. Unless they can't change a light bulb and they are just jealous.

    Great Job! What made you put the pencil holder on the other side instead of the same as the locking nob?

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  7 років тому

      Custom Chris I wanted the pencil to lie flush with the surface of the divider for extra stability. After after notching out the arm and flattening the side of the pencil holder it more or less does. If I did it on the other side I would have needed to make the pensil holder bigger so the pencil would sit proud of the curved arm. I just thought this would give the pencil a bit less play.

    • @YTcustomchris
      @YTcustomchris 7 років тому

      cool I was just think of laying it in a draw or on the wall it would not lay flat. I see your point tho

    great project man, thanks for sharing. glad to see file work is not a lost art! :) i like it too as you said it allows you to enter a "zone". what material did you use? the bluing looked awesome too. take care. pete
    ps did you follow some classic pattern?

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  7 років тому +1

      thebrokenbone winged it on the pattern, the material was just mild steel and brass, the finish I was actually unhappy with and ended up redoing with Birchwood presto black bst4, the stuff I used in the video was kinda splotchy and had a kinda brown tinge to it. The new stuff is amazing.

    did you do anything special to your belt/disc sander to make it run good or did it do just fine right out of the box?

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  7 років тому

      Mine ran fine but from what i understand they often come waaaay over tensioned and it will stall out the motor. you just have to loosen it a bit and it will run fine. It sounds like its powered by broken wrenches but it hasn't failed me yet and for like $35 you can go wrong.
