BUILD: Compass Dividers

- I've been reading about historical layout and design lately and thought it was time I made a good quality set of compass dividers. This can be used with or without a pencil or pen. I actually enjoy filing so I opted to do the majority of the shaping by hand, unfortunately I had to buy the knurled knobs but hopefully ill get a metal lathe soon and I can replace them.

Two things: Wow what beautiful craftsmanship.
When I am watch there are 14 thumbs down; I can't believe that there are 14 people on this planet that are so stupid that they can't recognize a great craftsman at work. Unless they can't change a light bulb and they are just jealous.
engrossco engrossco thank you! And I think I get a lot of thumbs down because people are expecting to get step by step tutorials and it bothers them that I don’t talk at all through the videos
Impressive work.
Thank you!
Outstanding work! Or in the words of the young, You got game!!
haha yeah i'm 'bout to get my make on.
This is awesome! Hope to maybe carve out a day to do a similar one in the future.. What was the green spray can you hit it with before adding the finish? Some kind of metal prep? Very new to finishing in general, especially when it comes to steel.
Great work! Always enjoy your videos
Thank you!
incredibly inspiring
Thanks 👍👍👍
Hiiii...!! Brod... Excelente trabajo y muy Útil esa Herramienta... Para esas labores que requieren de Mucha Presi ion.. 📐⭕🟣🔴⚫📏📝✏️🖊️📐😉... 👍👏👏👏👏👏😉
Beautifull!
Ludovic Kuhn 👍👍👍
Kudos, looks neat ! I WANT ONE NOOOOOW
this is super cool...i need a bigger set......the ones i have i tipped with carbide when i got them, havent had a need to sharpen them in 20 years and i use them on carbon steel and stainless.just be careful once you have them silver soldered on ,not to heat them up too much when sharpening or the tips will fall off...lesson learned on my part...lol
Amazing!
Rich Wachtel 👍👍👍
very nice dude!
+Southern Ginger Workshop thanks man!
Great Job! What made you put the pencil holder on the other side instead of the same as the locking nob?
Custom Chris I wanted the pencil to lie flush with the surface of the divider for extra stability. After after notching out the arm and flattening the side of the pencil holder it more or less does. If I did it on the other side I would have needed to make the pensil holder bigger so the pencil would sit proud of the curved arm. I just thought this would give the pencil a bit less play.
cool I was just think of laying it in a draw or on the wall it would not lay flat. I see your point tho
That is sweet!
Super job, you deserve a lathe :)
el mejor video que vi del compas justo lo que andava vuscando
Super nice..
great project man, thanks for sharing. glad to see file work is not a lost art! :) i like it too as you said it allows you to enter a "zone". what material did you use? the bluing looked awesome too. take care. pete
ps did you follow some classic pattern?
thebrokenbone winged it on the pattern, the material was just mild steel and brass, the finish I was actually unhappy with and ended up redoing with Birchwood presto black bst4, the stuff I used in the video was kinda splotchy and had a kinda brown tinge to it. The new stuff is amazing.
thebrokenbone and thank you 😊
:)
Exceptional.
Thank you!
great job! lots of ATD (attention to detail)
I wish I had those kind of skills! But as can be seen in my uploads, I still have a lot to learn
Workshop on Wheels this was just beginners luck I've never done anything like these before
Very nice work! how many hours would you say these took?
+djAnakin about 8 hours or so, but the first time is always slow. Would be a lot faster without all the hand filing too.
did you do anything special to your belt/disc sander to make it run good or did it do just fine right out of the box?
Mine ran fine but from what i understand they often come waaaay over tensioned and it will stall out the motor. you just have to loosen it a bit and it will run fine. It sounds like its powered by broken wrenches but it hasn't failed me yet and for like $35 you can go wrong.
Right thank you sir! Take care and God bless
Great job! Which product was applied before the perma blue?
Just brake cleaner to get any oil off the surface.
tks
Wow!!
Zach Miller thank!
👍🏻
Stella job my son!
+Chris Ioannou thank you!
Thanks to the Master! I want to ask, what is the thickness of the base metal? I want to make myself the same compass, there is stainless steel, thickness 3 mm!
Like from AZE 🇦🇿
Sami OZ it was 3/16in (~4.5mm) thanks :)
What price of it
Wow
Aaron DC mediA 👍👍👍
9:16 gotta lube up my pencil holder so my pencil goes in easy. 😂😂
+Dank Videos Danker Memes that's brake cleaner... you don't want it anywhere near your pencil
TabLeft Workshop ohhhh my bad, great video though!
Does it show how many times I've watched this video?
