  • A beam compass or trammel points has been on the list of woodworking projects to get done for a long time. I made mine from threaded rod and some hardwood. This turned out to be a great weekend woodworking project!

    That's a really cool design. Every shop needs some threaded rod. That stuff is so handy and can be used in so many different projects.

    First of all thank you very much for teaching us how to make the beam compass, I also add another unit with 2 nos swivel caster wheels to make it more stable but my beam compass is heavier and easily it can be tilted.

    They are so handy, I built one about 3 months ago. All I had on hand was some 1/8"X1/2" bar stock so I cut my pieces out of oak (all I had on hand) and then machined slots in them and tapped them for lockdown bolts. Used the scribe out of an old adjustable square and an HD pencil. Works great and cost $0.00, I've always liked that price.

      +Lyle Kobberstad funny I was thinking about using a scribe from a square as well:)

    Good design. To prevent the pointer block from moving on the rod you might want to grind the thread flat on one side so the screw has a flat surface to tighten too. Hope this is helpful.

    Should have bought a few more nuts. If you tightened a nut up against the part holding the pencil, it wouldn't want to rotate around like it did at 4:40. Also a nut before and after the wood part can be used to help fine adjust you measurements. Finally, if you want to get really crazy, you could try cutting a grove down the threaded rod (not sure haw to do that with any precision) that your locking screw can ride in that would keep you wooden part from rotating around.

    If you would place the pencil a little further into coupling nut you could then put a short bolt in the end and tighten the pencil.

    Cool intro! this is an interesting build! does it tend to move when you tighten the thumbscrew? I'm sure it is fine but in my mind it was like it will tend to pick a thread valley instead of staying in place. But mind images aside, it seems to work great :) and damn those were a lot of sparkles in the concrete nail! good stuff!

    • @Shopbuilt
      @Shopbuilt  8 років тому

      +Cactus! workshop thanks! As long as you give the thumb screw a good crank it doesn't seem to move, the original idea was to grind a flat spot along the length of the rod but didn't seem to be necessary:)
