- A beam compass or trammel points has been on the list of woodworking projects to get done for a long time. I made mine from threaded rod and some hardwood. This turned out to be a great weekend woodworking project!

That's a really cool design. Every shop needs some threaded rod. That stuff is so handy and can be used in so many different projects.
+Joshua Luther for sure and it's so cheap, this stuff cost me 4 bucks for 36"
Real nice that's the strongest and easiest way I've seen done. Your right about needing one around I need to make one too. Two thumbs up
+Franks DIY thanks! It's a quick and easy project;)
I love the simplicity of this design, because it looks so awesome!
+Ben Lucas thanks:)
I really like this design. Simple and fulfills its purpose.
+djAnakin thanks:)
First of all thank you very much for teaching us how to make the beam compass, I also add another unit with 2 nos swivel caster wheels to make it more stable but my beam compass is heavier and easily it can be tilted.
Very Nice. Simple, Elegant and Functioning. Thanks for posting the build. Keep up the good work.
Fantastic, brother! Looks great, and works like a charm.
+Josh Dirkson thank you:)
Making circles like a BOSS!!! I like the simplicity.
+Greg's Garage thanks;)
I love the way threaded rod tightens against!
compasses still amaze me that the line always meets the beginning of the circle :) super easy and awesome design, thanks
+kmonnier I know they're great:)
Very neat design. great job.
Awesome job, now we need a video of you making a spot for these on the tool wall! Love you channel Brian
+Eric Merchant for sure;)
Very nice build. Thanks. Barry (from England)
Great idea and simple design ! Love it !
+Stephan Dallons thanks:)
They are so handy, I built one about 3 months ago. All I had on hand was some 1/8"X1/2" bar stock so I cut my pieces out of oak (all I had on hand) and then machined slots in them and tapped them for lockdown bolts. Used the scribe out of an old adjustable square and an HD pencil. Works great and cost $0.00, I've always liked that price.
+Lyle Kobberstad funny I was thinking about using a scribe from a square as well:)
Well done sir, simply put
Great project. Added to my to do list.
I love this design, great way to lock in the pencil.
+Ben Brandt thanks!
that is a great idea for attaching the pencil, nice and simple
+MrTarfu thank you!
Very nice, thumbs up!
+AllesohneKabel thanks!
Great idea. I've added it to the list of projects to do myself.
Great build. I agree with Ben Brandt. I really like the pencil lock idea.

+Braden Gourley I totally did take your recommendation, and it was a fun little project:)

+Jeremy McMahan thanks:)
As always, very useful stuff. I could see myself using this in the next teardrop camper build. Maybe I should make one. Thanks!
+Dad Rambles it's a quick project and very useful:)
Simple enough, like the threaded rod idea!

+Mike Kapotsy thanks Mike!
Very cool, Ryan!
+Humus Workshop thanks:)
Very good! I really need to do one of these.
Was just looking at my small compass and thinking I'll need to figure out a design for a larger one that's not as bulky as some I've seen.. Thank you so much for doing the hard work for me! Love your videos, just moved into a house with a suitable space for a woodshop, and I've got quite a few of your builds on my list of things I'd like in my shop. Keep up the great work!
+adam nichols awesome! Thanks man:)
No problem! You're fastly becoming one of my favorite channels. You do great work!
nice job! need to make some of those fur sure!! much love
kick ass!! great video and nice job!!
Nice design, great work 🤓
+Live Free and DIY thank you:)
Awesome idea and build
+Thom spillane thanks:)
Thank God I watched this. I almost made one very like this with maple.
Nice build, Ryan, got it on my list now :>)
Nice! I bet you're thinking "I should have done this sooner!" lol Thanks for sharing.
Nah that band saw blade had some life in it, isn't flames is the changing indicator? 😎
Good design. To prevent the pointer block from moving on the rod you might want to grind the thread flat on one side so the screw has a flat surface to tighten too. Hope this is helpful.
Top notch mate 👍🏻
+Dirk Gibbons thanks:)
Great handmade tools...Now build a couple of tool holders for the tool wall! Told you that you were a toolaholic...
+Kim Shirley lol, yeah you right...
thanks Ryan, very useful!
+Jack Of All no problem;)
i wanna try to built one of your project, i built adjustable compass by poplar wood & hook in a broken tape measure for measurements,. your video is beautiful, thanks for sharing
Nice wonder if there is a way to turn that into a bar gauge really been wanting to make one of those.
Awesome ! Many Thanxxxx !
I really like this simple design but does it have to look pretty?
I wonder if they have brass tubing that fits snug around the all-thread.
It looks great already but then it may look super oldskool lol
good job
Cool build! And best of all they're going to look great hung on the tool wall, right?!
Super simple
Should have bought a few more nuts. If you tightened a nut up against the part holding the pencil, it wouldn't want to rotate around like it did at 4:40. Also a nut before and after the wood part can be used to help fine adjust you measurements. Finally, if you want to get really crazy, you could try cutting a grove down the threaded rod (not sure haw to do that with any precision) that your locking screw can ride in that would keep you wooden part from rotating around.
12" 24" and 36" when you put the two together, nice.
I can relate with making due when making the tool or jig would be the answer.
Thanks
+GUY HILLIS for sure;)
Wow 👏👏👏
If you would place the pencil a little further into coupling nut you could then put a short bolt in the end and tighten the pencil.
Hey Ryan - if I use something simple, like scrap pine, will it still make circles, or will I get ovals?
Nyuk, nyuk.
+Craig Butler sorry it will never work;)
Hey Ryan, Nice design. Deos the padauk compass body want to rotate around the threaded rod as you are using it? Cheers from up in Fredericton, NB b.t.w.!
Cool intro! this is an interesting build! does it tend to move when you tighten the thumbscrew? I'm sure it is fine but in my mind it was like it will tend to pick a thread valley instead of staying in place. But mind images aside, it seems to work great :) and damn those were a lot of sparkles in the concrete nail! good stuff!
+Cactus! workshop thanks! As long as you give the thumb screw a good crank it doesn't seem to move, the original idea was to grind a flat spot along the length of the rod but didn't seem to be necessary:)
great! thanks :)
How's that TS dust collection work? Did you post your bulid/any improvements since then?
I noticed you are lefty , congratulations. Do you find that most tools are set up for rightys?
I always wonder who they caught it from
good
ótimo
fine tanxs
If it's on the internet, it must be true. ;-)
Todo list
you surprise me, I would have you would have made the pencil out of the same wood instead of metal. just think about the different shapes you could make it into. maybe scroll saw the words "shop built" into the shape:>) great video
I want to more type of rounder
Soak the threads in thin C A glue and they will last a long time
i like, good job, but i just buy a cheap big compass, and he do the same, but good job...
Why are the new videos getting funnier each time?
+Rexus King just trying to lightening thing up a little:)
why are all your tools made by ridgid
+Elliot Banker-Sumner they don't sponsor me, just think there a good bang for the buck tool.
I'll buy it from you
Would love to have you in our facebook group "I Like To Make Stuff"
+Noconz0727 MC I don't really use Facebook but when I get a chance I'll check it out:)
My paint cans are going to be so angry when I build this.
+Muddy Fences they'll get over it:)
