The way Subaru's hold their value on trade-ins, I may just trade my '22 OBW for the '23 with the built-in Apple Carplay! The only reason I bought the OBW was because the dealer offered me a crazy price for my '19 Forester while I was waiting for an oil change.
This video was filmed at 60 fps. The flashing you see is the frame rate of the camera and the frequency of the LEDs that light up the dash not syncing. It is a common occurrence when filming at high frame rates. It does not look like that to the naked eye.
When you need to show the navigation info in the CID, do you run the cord through the wireless CarLinKit or do you run a separate cord directly to the head unit (normal wired carplay use)?
The navigation in the CID only works on a wired CarPlay setup. The wireless CarLinkKit does not relay this information to the CID. When I use wireless CarPlay, the only information sent is currently playing media.
It has to be plugged into whatever USB port is connected to your head unit as long as your head unit has CarPlay on it. If it does not you might want to look into a after market head unit that has apple CarPlay.
I bought this 2.0 version a couple years ago. Since then CarLinKit has released two major revisions of hardware. I made this video because I've been receiving a lot of DM's with some questions about my CarPlay setup. I made this video to answer the most common questions I got.
No. The front two USB ports below the infotainment system are the only USB ports that transmit data to the head unit. You must use one of these two ports with the CarLinKit.
Hello . Thanks for your great videos . I have a Carlin kit 4.0 installed . Its working great so far . The only issue I’m having is that it says it will disconnect me from Carlin CarPlay if I join my car’s WiFi hotspot? Is there a way around this ? Thanks v much again
Wireless CarPlay works by creating a private Wi-Fi connection between your phone and the head unit (or in this case the adaptor). Your phone can only connect to one W-Fi network at a time. You would not be able to connect to both CarPlay and your car’s hot spot at the same time.
thanks for this video. I just got my Forester Wilderness and I love it!!! So I wam going to get this I think because of your video so thanks. But...any changes in your opinion as of today??? Thanks agin.
There have been a few firmware updates since I have posted the video. Not much has changed, but I have noticed an improvement with connection times and stability of the connection.
I have an adroid phone and i am trying to connect wireless dongle carlinkit to my subaru outback 2019, but every time the screen says no found to remove and connect again. I couldn't load the APK file USB flash drive either. Could you tell me how to do it? Thank you
The dongle I reviewed is specifically for Apple CarPlay. It is not compatible with Android Auto. CarLinKit did create a newer dongle that supports wireless Android Auto, but I did not have that adaptor, nor do I have an Android Phone. I suggest you contact the dongle manufacturer for support.
The head unit itself does not require an internet connection for the CarLinKit adaptor to work. CarPlay will work with the adaptor with or without an internet connection on the head unit or your phone. However, the apps on your phone may require an internet connection to work.
Please confirm with the manufacturer of the dongle for a list of compatible vehicles: carlinkitcarplay.com/products/carlinkit-wireless-adapter-for-factory-carplay
There is no installation of an apk required. The iPhone sees this as just a Wireless CarPlay head unit. The car sees this as a wired CarPlay device/phone. To both the phone and the car, the adaptor handles all the connections without the installation of any software. In the video, there is a chapter where I show you exactly how to set up the adaptor. You can see that I didn’t have to install anything to either the phone, car or adaptor.
@@wildxtrek Yeah but then why do most of them that I’m looking for on eBay or Amazon specifically in the instructions it says you need to install in APK that’s why I haven’t bought one yet because I didn’t know if you had to or not But I clearly seen you didn’t have to do that
@@jlh02005 the only mention of an APK in the instructions is for upgrading the firmware of the adaptor from an Android phone. On an iPhone, upgrades are done via the Safari web browser on the iPhone while it is connected to the adaptor. Beyond that, I don’t know what else to tell you, other than I have never felt with APK installation in my entire time of owning this device. If you are still unsure, may I suggest contacting CarLinKit directly for further support.
@@wildxtrek OK sweet thanks maybe I might look into getting one but I don’t want to spend a lot of money I know eBay has some of the Carlink offbrand ones for like $40 I don’t know if they be worth it
You know what's crazy? Carlin's website literally says "dongle will make your wired CarPlay/Android Auto wireless(via Bluetooth and Wifi), providing a completely wireless experience", and then it later says "2 . Only for iPhone with ios 9+ system and vehicles come with wired CarPlay. 3. This item is NOT suitable for Android phones and Aftermarket Android car stereos".
Just an update: CarLinKit just released a newer v3.0 product that has a carbon fibre look enclosure. This newer product (NOT the one in my video) is supposed to work with Android Auto. Please verify with the manufacturer of the dongle for further details: carlinkitcarplay.com/products/carlinkit-wireless-adapter-for-factory-carplay
I bought one sent back kept freezing my information system. 😩
Hi, have you tried the built in maps along with the music from the carplay?
Yes. Both work the same as wired, with the exception of the in dash navigation prompts.
Thank you for sharing!! I hope you keep these awesome videos up, not many wilderness videos out there :).
Thank you!
@@wildxtrek really is a beautiful vehicle. Wishing you many many miles with her.

Does it work when you plug it into the middle console of the car? Does it have to be plugged below the head unit?

Is there any lag while navigating? Is there any possibility to miss a turn? Thank you in advance
No, there is no lag while navigating. As I mentioned in the video the lag difference between the wired and wireless connection is only milliseconds.

My Carlinkit turns off my phones Wi-Fi once it connects. Is it supposed to?
It shouldn’t turn it off per se. Wireless CarPlay relies on a wifi connection between the adaptor and the phone.
