- This is my 1st attempt to build a trailer to haul all our gear for tent camping. It will have a galley kitchen like a teardrop camper and enough storage space to haul all the gear. It will be able to be pulled by a small vehicle and be low cost.
That's an excellent job my friend I'm on the way to making mine on my channel as we speak that is a nice you've you've given me some great ideas and you don't have to put framework all over to waste a lot of time doing that nonsense you proved that that your plywood together make your box and that by itself is study enough that is a great job my friend excellent I love it..
Nice work...I want to build some like this but for a moble detailing rig
Very nice build exactly what I want to pull behind my car. Has enough weight to hold the road well and a dependable chassis. Great job. Good material. Like to see the finished job.
Thanks Bryan
Very interesting seeing how other people design home made camping trailers differently. By watching what other men build, it is helping me to figure out what kind of camper that suits my needs & I will build. My camper is going to be EXTREMELY light weight and big enough to stand up & sleep inside. I will not use thick panels. I will build mine with a strong SKELETON and then put a thin skin on it.... Maybe chicken-wire covered with thin layers of cloth soaked in epoxypaint or fiberglass. That way, I will have a lightweight camper that will not affect my gas milage, and will not cost $5000 dollars like a "Casita" or "Boler" trailer. Thank you for uploading what you made for the purpose of tent camping..
David, keep in mind the wind forces you will encounter driving to your destinations, a cat1 hurricane is 74 mph winds.
Hey 3x, I posted Some questions on your other video, but I just found this and I’m getting many of them answered. It looks great.
So far so good nice progress sir 👍👍Good luck cannot wait to see what happens next!!
Nice job on the trailer, I like the doors on either side, makes it easier to access the gear. I also like the galley. Great job with some good ideas.
Nice job great way to get the extra space and bet it's handy! Couple of additions you might be interested in: LED lights on a microswitch so when you open the doors you have lighting run by a small battery. Maybe a drip edge on the doors to keep everything completely dry. When I bend plys I use a stout piece of lumber along the edge I ratchet down so the ply doesn't flare up.
I was thinking the same. But, how about building a bed. The width that goes from outer wheel to outer wheel and the length that goes from end to end. A rectangular shape. Then, drilling holes straight through on all corners and bolting it on top so that you will have much more floor space. You can build separate cabinets on the bottom half and built onto the top half. That's my plan. Nice built.
I actually modified it later to just that. Took out the center wall and made the doors bigger so I could get in it. I bought a sleeping pad from Amazon that fit perfect inside it. Worked great. I’ve since moved on though to a travel trailer and sold my little trailer. The guy was thrilled to get it so it’s all good. Good luck with yours.
awesome job bro...you gave me some good tips on how to do mine..thanks Ed.
Thanks Eddie, hope you got a chance to build your own. Would like to see pics of your build.
"High Five" on the "Kreg" pocket hole jig, they're awesome ... !
Nice little build! Any video of the inside?? I was going to go with 1/2" ply for the sides, and 1/8" ply for the roof (a lot lighter and easier I think to work with). I did see a fella's video he used sheet metal for his roof.. might go that way...
Thanks, no pics for inside but was pretty plain. I later modified it to sleep inside. Used it a few times then sold it when we bought a travel trailer. You’re right 1/2 and 1/4 would definitely be easier to work with although 3/4 wasn’t a problem. It weighed 750 lbs complete.
Good luck on your build.
I have a 4 × 6 trailer exactly like this I'm going to make mine out of but I'm going to build out one foot on the sides and the front and use the drop-down in the trailer as a basement that I can access from the inside or from the back barn doors
Sharon Sheats , good idea. Have fun with your build.
this is a very informative video, thanks!
S Z thank you
Nice project! You gave me a cool idea. I have a trailer that is very similar to yours, I just might convert it to a camping trailer too, but I want have one that I can sleep in. I will have to check out your other videos. Cheers! : )
Air Rifle Shooting and Varminting
I actually converted this one to a sleep in trailer. Check out my other videos. Good luck with yours
I'm thinking of making one as well only be able to take it off when needing the trailer for other things.imagination has no limits
Well Jeremiah, I had that same thing in mind but it turns out it isn't so easy getting it off. So it hasn't been off the trailer.
Terrence, I had it weighed at a scale when I finished it. It was 725 lbs. however I've been in the process of converting it to an actual teardrop type camper I can sleep in. I'll post a new video soon, still have a little work to complete it.
Just sold mine because it only tows 1100lbs. The pilot tows 4500.
I was thinking of doing this with my 5'X8' utility trailer I bought from tractor supply in 2007,but then I thought of a used popup trailer.
It seems like the plywood would make it pretty heavy. Could you build it with two by fours then use metal, for sides and roof. I'm thinking of doing this to my 6 foot by 14 foot single axle trailer. But I'm afraid plywood would be really heavy
awesome ideas thank you
Thanks sub dawg
Awesome bro.
Looks good but here is my advice, you can take it or leave it. This wood camper will work at super slow speed only and that too short distances away from home. If you push it, then you will hauling broken camper in pieces back to home. After your first trip, you will hear rattle and its all downhill from there on. Just trying to help you.
Vinod Patel , I've since changed it to a sleep in camper. You can see it on you tube as well. But this trailer traveled hundreds of miles at highway speeds without a single problem. It is very solid..
I made mine where one big pin anchors it to the trailer, had it hang off the back 3 feet, and put small wheels, so I could remove from trailer, when needing open trailer.
Greg p, I originally thought I could do something like that. But it's a little too heavy for that so I just left it on the trailer. It's been modified a little since then though. Good luck with yours
Pocket hole have its place. Probably not good for dynamic weight and tension, but good luck. Will you do an update vid to show me wrong?
I agree. It helped screw the 2 boards together but I did go back and add 1x2 boards around the perimeter to add some strength.
I'm not real familiar with prices but what's a general "cheap" price to pay for a used trailer liked that?
David McCue I paid $325 for this one. It was basically new. Tractor Supply trailer.
How many lb wright width length
R u selling
You didn't seal the wood from rot underneath???
but you didn't water seal the flooring, that will rot out in no time driving in the rain or any dampness/moisture issues
how much did you pay for the trailer?
Молодец, мужик ! Очень толково .
Very nice, one like from a New Sub
Nice project! How is the plywood holding up? In my experience, plywood from Lowes and Home Depot starts to delaminate very quickly.
Thanks, I had it outside under a cover at first. The sun and winter dryer the plywood out a bit. Recently I converted it to a sleep in camper and made several changes. I painted the whole thing with rustoleum truck bed liner. I'm taking a trip to the smokies in a couple weeks so that will be my maiden voyage of sleeping in it. I am considering covering at least the top with aluminum. Thanks for looking and for the comment.
Screws AND glue??
Probably it would had been better to use the Glass Fibre Laminate instead of the plywood
buen trabajo.
Those rear galleys become problematic in a heavy rain in the middle of the night when you're tucked away inside, and you hear your stomach rumbling. MAKE access to your galley/pantry from INSIDE....DUHHHHH!!!!
What does it weigh with all that 3/4 plywood?
Terence Gillespie Full sheets of plywood weigh about 100 pounds per inch of thickness. 0.75" thickness then weighs approximately 75 pounds. Just add up all the pieces to arrive at area. Total area in square feet divided by 32 (the area of a full sheet). You can take it from there. I'm thinking somewhere in the 300 pound range plus any other materials. A 2 x 4 weighs around 12 pounds on average.
I would have done the roof curve differently. The deep saw cuts reduced the effective thickness by a lot since there's so little left after cutting. Two or three layers of thinner stock built up with each one bent individually with glue between each one would have been easier as well as stronger.
Terrence, I took it to a scale after I got it done and it weighs 725 lbs.
How deep did you do the galley? and what is the front height? 36"
The galley is 24 inches deep and 36" in front sounds right. I modified the whole thing to a trailer I can sleep in. You can check out that video to see the changes.
Great job !! Where did u find your door hinges ?? My father and I wanna build something similar for him but be able to sleep in it:) did you do any sort of water proofing to the plywood on the very bottom??
Brian, found those at Home Depot. I'm actually converting it to sleep in it, took out the middle wall, and changed a few other things to be able to sleep in it. Thanks for the comment
R u still doing yutube?
I want to buy a trailer.
great job will be much better than piling the car full
Thanks, it worked well for hauling our gear.
You could probably add a roof top tent on top of that trailer of yours
Nice JOB, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE A LARGE COFFIN ON WHEELS
doesn't seem like he's planning on sleeping in it...
how is your progress into a teardrop
It's done, just got back from a trip to the smokies. I posted a video of it called tiny camper-home built. Check it out
How much did all of this cost?
After the new conversion to a sleep in tiny camper, I have $1100 in it.
Build the frame.
Spray the entire thing with 😏"FLEX SEAL"
What is it
TOOOOOO HEAVY.
725 pounds is not too heavy. It has other issues but weight isn't one of them.
Looks like a damn dog house on wheels
way cool
thanks
No windows? Feels like a coffin without ventilation. Lol
cool
How the hell you get 2 people in one side of it . you know if it was me I put all the storage in the back and I put my wife on the other side of that wall .🤣😂🤣😂
Sounds like a plan. Actually it was first built just to haul our camping equipment, tents and chairs etc. I modified later to actually sleep inside. Worked great but I sold it and bought a much larger travel trailer.
is this a dog house ?
mangend , no but my yorkie poo would love it. Check out my finished camper after I converted this to a tiny camper.
too heavy for crv
It weighs 725 lbs, no problem. The CRV was rated at 1500.
