I’m a 64 year old arthritic, mobility impaired, woman. I am not now nor have I ever been builder or repairer of anything bigger than a trinket box. I loved this video. No fancy technical jargon, no fast forward through what you were doing. And you explained everything you did and why. This was an excellent teaching video.
Hi me just turned 60 this year Sept 02 .lol .my brother just both my side by side ride .turning my trailer that I pulled my ride on making it in to a camper a log house like. Yes I can't wait .my brother is going to do the project for me because I have no tools he has lots .so he's going to pick up they trailer and side by side up tomorrow or Sunday. 6 feet hi I told him .nice talking to you .👍🏕🔥🌲🌻🕯
This is truly one of the best DIY videos that I've ever seen on UA-cam. You don't have an extravagant workshop loaded with $500k worth of expensive tools. You don't have 15 people helping you with the build. The process is shown in real time from a good angle, where viewers can get a good look at what you're doing. Absolutely perfect and the camper came out great!

I'm 44, have a spine injury so I try to guide my son who is autistic through building things I am not an expert in. Your calming way of explaining makes it easier to learn. We are slowly converting a mini bus so this was very helpful.
To LIVINMONTES. Both you and your son are a GREAT TEAM. Life is just random - even if people have any disabilities, they still have things to ACHIEVE. So you need to find how to do them! I'm writing music for a video, but am Dyspractic - so I can't get the hang of any instruments, except KEYBOARDS. However, if you notice, many musicians DO play everything through a keyboard these days as a matter of course. No massive amount of instruments to drag around from place, and no big orchestra to have to find space forbon a stage either. So no- one will know my "secret" problems anyway! SORTED! And with your practical mind, you are also just the ideal Dad your capable son needs, too!

Your daughter is gaining useful knowledge she will never forget especially since she is learning it from a pro her father. I love 💕 it when the kids are involved!! My dad did it for me I ended up building homes. Great build, great video.
@@blackspruce1861yikes!!! You truly are a G, an OG as a matter of fact. If I could put a set of those black sunglasses 😎 like these on your picture I would. Fantastic looking camper btw. Can’t wait to see it finished with a fridge and everything on the punch list done. Hopefully we’ll see you and your, ahem, wife camping during the winter months!
Beautiful job man, I have been a carpenter for almost 30yrs and I enjoyed every bit of watching you build this...and now I'm currently online looking for an old pop-up or trailer to use for the same thing!😂 You did an amazing job and that will probably outlast most campers built today!! It looks beautiful and I'm sure y'all enjoy it to the fullest!!

@@blackspruce1861 I have some bags I got at a hardware store that are like family size tea bags but with peppermint, spearmint and what all in them. I used to leave them in my last car, on a pie plate on the floor, to keep the chipmunks from infesting and eating my air system and filter. They work well, are not toxic and do not smell like mothballs. If you hate the mint it dissipates pretty fast as long as it isn't mint oiling the flooring. I thought my nice minty car was a great return on not replacing filters and having acorns vacuumed out or blown at me when the fan was turned on. Much better than checking and changing the snap traps, decon or whatever. My cousin swears by peppermint oil spray.

@@blackspruce1861 I'll keep an eye out for it. I just watched this again and thought to ask if you'd put any under-body anti-fouling paint on the floor ply which will protect your hard work from the elements and insulate the floor some?
I've watched alot of homemade camper videos, and I feel you nailed it. You didn't over build where you didn't need it and you did when necessary. The Luan was more than necessary for the walls where I've seen others use 1/2". Keep up the good work brother!!
Solid build, yeah seems like a tradeoff between weight and strength, which reminds me of a Japanese build i watched a whlie ago, ua-cam.com/video/zvgaycb8_DQ/v-deo.htmlsi=loxgFiIIKxju0a0X theyve been working with wood for a long time and have some intersting design philosophies. Personally id see if could get away with no wood and just use aluminum frame with sytrofoam board for ultimate light weight. Ive seen homless shelters made out of them they put out for the homeless in the winter here in the city , they seem to insulte really well, and add some plastic sidng for more weather proofing and youre good, Id be planning to haul it using an eletric bike so id be even more weight consiouse is the reason and this could be a real light weigh solution. Thanks for the inspiration. @@blackspruce1861

I worked for a mobile home company back in the late 60s. (Fleetwood) Some of the large trailers uses 2x2 lumber for the side walls and 2x4 lumber in the front wall. The roof was 2x6 tapered to the edges to allow a bit of roof pitch. The trick to keeping the walls in place was a cap strip all the way around the trailer and some of the larger units used steel strapping to reinforce around windows. I think you did a great job, especially using glue and screws. The big trailers were all just nailed together by hand.
I can't believe I ended up watching all of this when I haven't ever built anything like this! I did take wood & metal shops in middle & highschool & my grandpa had a shop with every tool, I couldn't ever do this at 56! Lol. I was amazed at the patience it took to shave that counter top (over 2 hrs) & that roof! That was smart to build in your garage. & Charlie kept us entertained (I like how u made him move out from under saw💓) Now I'm gonna have to check out your other builds. U started in snow weather & ended up in warm weather. I wondered why u didn't use any kind of insulation under floor? But your just using this for summer camping so u don't need it for cold I guess. Turned out nice, now u need curtains or blinds!👍🏕️🐾
Thanks I'm really happy you enjoyed it !! he's a goof ball . i sometimes cut the point off of sticks on the chop saw and then throw them for him so every time he hears the saw he comes running . in hind sight I almost wish I would have insulated the floor but at the same time I think the solid 3/4 treated plywood should last longer

Wow ... that answered several questions I've had about a project like this one. I see a few of these mouse-ruined pop ups around, some just for the price of "hauling it away". Now I see why (besides any still working appliances) about all that's useable is the running gear/frame. Very useful info, Ryan! Thank you for taking the time to share this project :) Later, sir ... God Bless P.S. I see your pup is as helpful in a building project as mine is! (lol)
hey thats what I wanted to hear ! I had a lot of questions and couldn't find simple answers . thats about it for sure I think my fridge still worked but the way it was vented through the wall of the popup caused water damage so I decided not to use it . oh yeah he's great to have around but as far as helpful not so much lol

From someone (me) who worked in RV's a long time, you did an Awesome Job without having prior experience in that field. Couple of minor things that you could have done different, but no complaints here! Great Job!
thats good to know . it really is hard to find solid information on how to build one . I was fortunate the guy at the surplus store explained the roofing and siding/trim for me otherwise I probably would have screwed that up . Thanks !!

I found your channel quite by accident. I’m so pleased I did! This was so much fun to watch, and all your creative ideas are inspiring. My oldest son, who is 22, is making changes to a partial pop out and hard top camper of his own. I sent this video to him to hopefully provide some insight. Thank you for making this video!
Love the video. I’m in the middle of a utility trailer conversion, and I took some good notes from this to help. One word of caution for those of us in colder climates; if you use a floating floor covering that doesn’t need to be glued down, it can crack under your footsteps in severe cold.
Awesome glad you liked it !!! I didn't know that I'll have to keep it in mind . I more than likely won't use it in too cold of weather though not something I want to haul round on snowy roads if I don't have to .

I love the build - simple yet eloquent. You don't see those things intersect too often. You never mentioned costs to anything, I can imagine already that this wasn't too crazy but I would be curious to know about the cost and location of the supplier for the doors and windows. I might not be able to do a 'tiny house' or 'cabin build' BUT...grabbing a run down pop-up and giving it a face lift would definitely fit the budget and my constraints of not having much land to store it and/or to build on. Thanks for inspiring the creative side of my brain!

I am a truck driver who pulls flatbed. Ive delivered lots of lumber, siding, and such to various travel trailer builders. Yours appears to be a lot nicer than many of them. I've seen that they dont predrill nail/screw holes. If the 2x2 splits, I guess they figure its inside the wall.

That came out really sharp. At first I thought it was too small. But you fit a lot inside and kept a clear flow to get to all areas. I really like the floating camper stove setup. There is room on the front and back so if you decide to add a bike rack, or strap down extra gear. It can be done easily. Can't wait for it to rain. You could always take a water hose to it just to test out the windows.

I would double check the load capacity on the springs/suspension. Just to make sure you're not putting way more on them than they were designed for. It may not seem like much weight, but it adds up quickly. Especially when you start loading gear, etc in it. * Since it was an older trailer to start with, those springs, bushings, etc may not have been in all that great of shape and they might possibly be Chinese springs. We see a lot of boat trailer springs break because they came from overseas and it's usually a horrific crash in the road. Which obviously you would never want to risk. Fortunately new springs and hardware aren't terribly expensive. But definitely a cool project you've done there.
I had the bearings all replaced , had new 8 ply tires put on . the springs don't look like they are in bad shape or overloaded . I may have a heavier axel and swings put on at some point though just for pice of mind . Thanks !!

@@blackspruce1861i'm going to do a small camper, and I agree, no roof leaks ever! That's my plan. I'm going to go get flat sheets of painted roofing metal from a manufacturer for the whole roof. I hear ya. I forgot about the rubber roofing. Definitely an issue for holes for solar ! I’m sure you’ll come up with a solution. It’s relatively narrow. Maybe a bracket down on the sides suspending the panel/panels. But then there’s snow load. Who knows ?!?! 😂. Take care bud

I have built and refurbished a couple of trailers. It is quite fun. The best part is figuring out things that are completely new to you. That is the most satisfying part of the job. You did a great job on both the camper and the video. Oh, people who want to try this don't have to have a camper trailer, almost any trailer can work.
Great build! Very entertaining!! Loved: 1. Your attention to detail 2. Using glue everywhere! 3. Charlie always wanting to get in the action! 🤣 Take aways: A lot more than I thought! Considered this kinda project myself. Learned a lot from this, thank you!

Thanks so much glad you liked it !!
Same here except I'm late 50's. Lovely soothing calm voice to.
You could build a model one using card and match sticks or popsicle sticks. It wouldn't be too difficult for you I am sure.....

Awesome project and some good skills to pass on!

I've watched alot of homemade camper videos, and I feel you nailed it. You didn't over build where you didn't need it and you did when necessary. The Luan was more than necessary for the walls where I've seen others use 1/2". Keep up the good work brother!!
Thanks !! thats great to hear . I was really concerned about weight but also strength at the same time . I will certainly try thanks again !!
Whats the weight? No way it’s under 2k 😂 ??

The big trailers were all just nailed together by hand.
wow 2x6 roofs . thanks !!!

I would be interested to know what the finished van weighs,, most UK motors are less than two litres engine size so weight is a critical factor?
just saw your response . I have a video that will cover weight , cost , adding a fridge and installing a heater that will be up Saturday morning 10:45 .
I am living outside in New York City.
I am in college rite now and I have a job.
I'm a 44 yr old dad I'm doing the best I can.
If you've ever been Then you know the winter in NYC is brutal so imagine living outdoors in those conditions.
And cops are all to happy to wake a house less person up in the middle of they're sleep too harass them.
This I believe will help me stay alive out here.
I love my country America is the greatest we help out the whole world.
But many veterans , essential workers ,single parents , widowers and divorcees are living in the street or wilderness and just barely able to keep ourselves from not dying.
I will complete school and one day see my kids.
All these videos inspire this City boy.
God bless you all may the lord protect us 🙏
I'm really glad you have enjoyed the videos . It sounds like you have the will of a true survivor , just keep focused and you can achieve anything . Thanks and may god bless and protect you as well

Thank you for the wonderful explanation, the photography, and the effort put into this video.. but I am surprised by those who watch and do not put a like. It has a million and a half views and only 34 thousand likes. What..? Support this content, it really deserves support

Great job. No doubt a better quality build than you would buy.
Thanks !! I really hope so but I've never bought a new one so hard for me to say

Very nice mini camper, you have to be proud of yourself 🎉❤🎉
Thank you !! I'm really happy with it !
Thanks !! I was pretty shocked how roomy I was able to keep it too. It did rain like crazy one day it was completely dry inside

Thanks !!
That's what I was thinking, all those 4x2 s do add up, but it looks sweet
just made some huge improvements to the camper that video will be up at 3:30 EDT today , I hope you can make it , I'm really happy with the end results ! Thanks again . axle and springs were one of the improvements
I don't usually comment on videos I , I just had to tell you that I watched the whole thing! It was fascinating and would be good for anyone, whether interested in DIY or buying a camper, to know what to expect and look for. You make it look easy, but I know it is not. Thank you for posting this!

I love the simple approach, basic tools. It doesn't look overly expensive, or complicated. A lot of people could do this to an old pop up. Good going!
Thank you !!

Great relaxing simple video! Thanks for sharing! Learned a lot from your simple way of explaining everything! Even the "should've's" were ok! Nothing wrong with realizing something could have been done better! You were honest about it! Thank you!

I really enjoyed watching this rebuild. I hope you film something for your first camping trip. Also think about putting a ceiling vent/ fan that pulls in air or out.
awesome glad you enjoyed it !! I do plan to do a camping video . I don't want to put any holes through the roof though It just makes a likely spot to leak
@@blackspruce1861i'm going to do a small camper, and I agree, no roof leaks ever! That's my plan. I'm going to go get flat sheets of painted roofing metal from a manufacturer for the whole roof. Then instead of plywood, i'm going to fiber reinforce some polyfoam sprayed onto the underside of the metal for a solid supertight roofcap. I'll shave off excess, and have a roof I can stand on and last 40 years.
that sounds like a good idea !!

That was an ambitious project to take on ! But a very cool one to watch ! Maybe a roof mounted solar panel and fridge would work out good as far as room and off grid camping ? Came out great Ryan ! Take care
It really was a big project !! thanks ! I like the roof mounted solar idea but I don't want to put any holes in the roof . I do plan to do something for a fridge but not exactly sure what

I agree thats the way this was plan as much as possible but mostly figure it out as I go . yeah and other trailers might be better with heavier axles
@@blackspruce1861 I didn't say better, it is just that some people don't have access to an old camper traile.
Great build! Very entertaining!! Loved:
1. Your attention to detail
2. Using glue everywhere!
3. Charlie always wanting to get in the action! 🤣
