In 1984 or 1985, a teacher in my high school showed this over the course of two days. He claimed it was because it showed how academic pursuits could be melded with real life interests or some other nonsense. A few years later, I ran into him and asked what was the real purpose of showing that movie. He admitted it was his favorite movie and wanted to share it with his students.
I had a music teacher in 6th grade who did the same thing but with Star Wars. He said to vice principal, "These kids need to learn how a real orchestra should sound and how it sets the tone of a scene in film", and when the coast was clear he openly told us students, "I just wanna make you all watch my favorite movie."
I had a science class in 9th grade and we were talking about the solar system. My teacher showed us Total Recall to tie into our learning about Mars. The first time the three boobed girl shows up he covered the TV with a piece of paper. The second time he forgot.
We watched Jurassic Park in one of my Science classes at my (Christian) school. It was awesome! (of course, it was also my copy of the movie that the teacher borrowed, so that was awesome, too, lol). This was in the mid to late 90s and most of the students hadn't seen it, yet.
We took our son to see Indiana Jones when he was six. He decided then and there that he wanted to be an Archaeologist. He started his college studies here in the US and received his PhD in Archaeology in Scotland. One of my graduation gifts to him was an official Indiana Jones hat. At his graduation party, the hat was passed around with oohs and ahhs by all his fellow graduates.
I LOVE the scene between Indy and the swordsman. It was originally supposed to be a big sword fight between the two, but Harrison Ford was sick at the time the scene was shot and he decided it would work to just pull his gun and shoot him. Obviously that wasn’t the script, but it became one of the most famous scenes of the movie. 😂 LEGENDS!
Don’t know how true it is but I guess it was supposed to be a big fight scene but Harrison Ford was under the weather that day and didn’t feel up to the big fight and just pulled the gun out and shot him instead. Again don’t know how true that is but just a story I’ve heard
@@rocker966627 It is. Ford had a stomach virus or flu that was going around. And Ford wasn't feeling up to it. So they rewrote from what would have probably been a forgettable fight scene to something that everyone remembers and makes more sense.
17:10 that's Gimli from Lord of The Rings, and so much more. John Rhys-Davies is one of those actors that has done it all and then some. He has been in hundreds of movies and TV-shows, he does voice acting, he is 78 years old and he is still going strong. Legend.
Also, no matter how bad the movie is, he always turns in a competent performance, even when the script would defeat a lesser actor. He deserves every word of praise he gets.
Speaking of all those wooden crates that the government had sealed and stored away, I used to work as a volunteer in a museum. And one of the staff workers at the museum told me that there was maybe only 20 percent of the museum collection on display to the public. The rest of the collection was stored away in the museum and some of it hadn't even been looked at since about maybe 1920. There was things like dinosaur fossils, etc.
They are covering up the true history of the Earth. Especially anything to do with Nephilim fossils. The world doesn't work the way most people think it does

Marianne is my favorite of the "love interests"...ever. She is such a badass, one of the first who didn't just stand and scream, but was quite happy to lend a hand in putting down the bad guys. Love her.
The fact that the U-boat never went underwater is surprisingly period-accurate. Submarines of that era traveled on the surface as much as possible, and only went underwater for combat. Because they couldn't run their diesel engines underwater without air, and the battery technology they used for underwater was a lot cruder than now.
If this was mentioned I apologize for repeating it...... When they are in the original room with the ark, you have to pay close attention to the hieroglyphs carved into the walls around the ark. One set of them is R2D2 and C3PO carved into the glyphs :)
Yes, the power of God would be extremely frightening to see. But those 2 guys who opened it would have never been able to do that. No one can touch it without dying immediately which is why it was carried by the poles on either side. That's what caused the walls of Jericho to fall

This is my favorite movie ever! Hands down! Not open to discussion! Imagine a time where there was no internet, no smart phones, no on-demand. Nothing but the summer vacation filled by the newest, best movies. Put yourself in a dark theater with a tub of buttered popcorn in front of a 30 foot tall screen! The closeups, the shadows, the gun shots and of course, THE MUSIC! When this came out it was like NOTHING that had been seen before! Hell, from 6th to 8th grade I went as Indiana Jones for Halloween. I had the whip, I had the fedora, I had the brown shirt and pants and jacket! We couldn't stop talking about the rolling stone, the snakes, the melting heads and, of course, Jones going under the truck! It's campy without being campy. It's fun, it's violent, it's smart. It's funny as hell! The pace is absolutely breakneck! The cinematography is artwork. The set pieces are AMAZING! The story is top notch! The acting, directing, the score.... Good lord! We were SO LUCKY growing up to have Spielberg and Lucas provide us the imagination with Williams providing the soundtrack! Jaws, Close Encounters, ET, Star Wars, Raiders! Year after year, those three took my generation on one adventure after another! Under the sea, into the biblical supernatural, into space! Never before and never again have three people DOMINATED a generation of cinema! I'm SO HAPPY you reacted to Raiders! It is iconic in worldwide culture! Harrison Ford became myth. In between getting his ass kicked he flashes that movie star smile! Women wanted him, men wanted to be him! It's the exact same 40 years later! Tell me another movie that has aged as well! Other movies have copied it. Everyone from the Simpsons to a dozen other sitcoms have lampooned it, copied it, honored it. It was a one-off movie. Lighting in a bottle. You guys are great with movie reactions! The Ark is not an evil artifact though.The Ark of the Covenant symbolized God’s agreement with the ancient Israelites and was supposedly the resting place of the original stone tablets that the 10 Commandments were struck on. So there is no evil connected to the Ark. But there were very specific rules on how it was handled and who could even see it. That’s why Indiana Jones had himself and Marian close their eyes. That’s why they survived. So the Ark isn’t evil, but the Nazis were. They also violated the sanctity of the Ark and they all died. When you see the swastika burn off the crate in the movie, It’s because it’s a symbol of evil.
Actually, until the Nazis used the Swastika, it was an ancient symbol of peace. I had always interpreted that scene as the Ark burning the symbol away to hide itself amongst the cargo to disguise itself. But I guess 15,000 years as a symbol of good luck was over shadowed by a few decades of Nazi use. As with any symbol or epitaph, intent and use mean more to me than anything. If I see a swastika on an Buddihst temple, it won't bother me. I see it on a red arm band, I'll have concern. To be historically accurate, there would have actually been ancient swastikas on the Ark, but I'm sure that would have confused most people watching the movie...
@@PorscheRacer14 The Nazi swastika and the Buddhist swastika aren’t the same. The Nazi version is inverted. And that’s the “evil” version that is depicted as being burnt away in the movie.
It occurs to me for the first time, because I only just looked at the rules for handling the Ark, that Belloch, with his level of knowledge, should have known not to open the Ark, or it would have been a bad day.
harrison ford also tore his knee ligaments in a failed stunt during the flying wing fight. producer frank marshall was the pilot in that scene. And VFX guy dennis muren cameo'd as the nazi reading the magazine on the plane indy flew on.

I remember standing in line for several hours with my brother to see this movie when it came out. Back then, there weren’t many, if any, big multiplex cinemas in the US. But DAMN it was so worth it. This was the first ever collab between George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg. Not the only collab (Willow) but it was the first. And damn was it epic. I love this movie now as much as I did when I saw it in the theater. 🔥
I remember doing the same thing with a friend. I also remember waiting for the second one the same way. Wore a white tux jacket to my senior prom because Indy wore his to the Obi Wan club. LOL
The theater in Orange Park Florida just outside Jacksonville was showing this and I remember one entire wall in the main foyer had hand painted scenes and images from the movie. Since I had not yet seen it, I found myself staring at everything thinking 'what the hell' - after I saw the movie it all made sense.
A sarcophagus is where they put a mummy. The Ark of the Covenant is where they stored the original stone tablets for the ten commandments. It was rumored that the Ark contained the power of God which was so powerful no man could lay his hands on it or pay the consequences with death. That is why the Ark has those two poles that people use to carry it.

Indiana's reaction to the big dude in black with the gigantic saber - when he pulled the gun and shot him - was unscripted! Harrison Ford was just told to do whatever, and he just said nope and shot him! So good they left it in the movie! Great scene!

This isn't accurate at all. Ford had dysentery, and a temperature of 102. There was a scripted fight scene, too long and physical for his condition. It was re-scripted when Ford had the idea to shoot him, but no, you don't just start firing firearms on a movie set on a whim. Unless you're a Baldwin.

I don’t mind sharing with the Asia and BJ family💚 my father had just taken his own life and I was grieving when this movie came out. My mom took me to see it just to take my mind off things for a bit (as if that was possible right but what else was she going to do?) it’s such a great movie and I wish I could separate the two events, but the brain just doesn’t work that way, every time I see the words Raiders of the lost Ark I turn into a 12 year old again. same thing happens with Empire Strikes Back, it’s the last movie I saw with my dad before he chose to leave us. And actually, the same thing happens with a lot of the 80s songs that my beloved reactors are doing a lot these days, and every one of them is an opportunity to heal the heart a little bit more. I dont know why but alot of times the bad always seems to stand out more than the good, i suppose like how a bad smell or memory will linger or smell stronger than say a flowers smell or a kind gesture, i have to remind myself that the good is infinetly stronger and ultimatly more important than the bad. My grandmother died over 20 years ago and even tho time may help my mom says it still haunts her. The scene where Indy shoots the swordsman was pure improv. Harrison Ford and a lot of the cast and crew had dysentery and he was sick and exhausted. Instead of fighting the guy as the script was written, he just pulled his gun and shot him. It worked so well that they kept it in the film. Everything about that scene just works perfectly.
yes, but Harrison Ford made the suggestion to Spielberg after a number of takes of the script. Spielberg liked it, approved the change and so then they filmed it.
The importance of the Ark of the Covenant is explained in the Bible in the book of Exodus. It explains exactly why unconsecrated hands cannot touch it and why people fall dead immediately when they do. The Ark of the Covenant contains the agreement between God and the Israelites. It contains the Ten Commandments. Having a swastika on a box containing sacred Jewish artifacts of the highest order is not a good mix so you can see why it burned off. I love this movie.
Before Harrison Ford was cast as Indiana Jones, Tom Selleck, Jeff Bridges, Nick Mancuso, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Tim Matheson, Peter Coyote, John Shea, Bill Murray, Nick Nolte, Kurt Russell, and Jack Nicholson were considered. Amy Irving, Sean Young, Stephanie Zimbalist, and Barbara Hershey were considered for Marion. There were a lot of action Sequences that were in the original script that were cut, but later showed up in the next Indiana Jones movie: A car chase through Shanghai. A plane crashing into the mountains. A mine car chase. A Motorcycle chase on the Great Wall, which was immediately rejected due to China's policy. Harrison Ford, while fighting the swordsman, suffered Diarrhea while filming and the scene had him just shoot the swordsman. Ford has injured his knee while fighting the German mechanic. It took him a few weeks to recover before filming commenced. Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Ford and Speilberg whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches, jus like the Arnold and Director McTiernan on PREDATOR. It was 110 ° in the shade, while they were filming in Tunisia Africa where they filmed most of the Star Wars movies. They filmed the climax at Elstree Studios London England. The sounds of the spirits coming out of the Ark are that of Dolphins and Seals played backwards. The sounds of Indy's handgun was that of a 30-30 Winchester rifle. The punching sounds are that of someone whacking a pile of leather jackets with a baseball bat. The film was a box office and critical success $390 million dollars against a $20 million dollar budget, and it's now considered to be one of the best action movies ever made.
I'm pretty sure Tom selleck was offered it but they wouldn't release him from is Magnum p.i contract so had to turn it down ( can't image anyone other than ford being indy) ...same sort of thing when pierce brosnan was offered bond many years ago but couldn't get out of his Remington Steele contract ...the part went to Timothy Dalton

With the ark being hidden in the top secret facility, it still is held by the US. The meaning behind it is what was said at the beginning: The army that carries the ark before it is invincible - a nod to America's dominance in the world order post WWII. I always liked that little touch at the end. Small, but significant.
The actor BJ recognized is John Rhys-Davies. He's been a supporting actor in a lot of movies and tv shows. The scene where Indy just shoots the big guy with the sword happened because Harrison Ford was sick - he couldn't stay out of the bathroom that long. So they just had him shoot instead of having a fight scene.
Spielberg made this movie as an homage to the old serials. They were shorts that were shown prior to the main feature at theaters. They generally ran 15 or so minutes and ended with the hero in some impossible situation - a cliffhanger. You had to come back the next week to see how he got out of it. This is the reason Indiana goes from one situation to the next. This movie is made as if a whole series of serial programs were stitched together.
The ending means the US government knows it exactly what it has, and it's storing it in that giant warehouse with all the other secret artifacts it has found. The government understands it's not something to be messed with. Enjoyed watching with you!
Just for the scene in the map room, and Indy vs the truck with the score going full blast would make this one of the greatest movies ever made. But it's just amazing from start to finish.
Definitely watch the next two films, (you can skip the 4th if you feel like it, even though it does have a couple of okay moments). "Temple of Doom" is interesting, but different.. The events depicted in that film were actually prior to the events of "Raiders of the Lost Ark". "The Last Crusade" is personally one of my faves, only surpassed by "Raiders"...
Woohoo! This is one of the all-time great movie franchises, written by George Lucas (star wars) and directed by Steven Spielberg (Jaws). YES - you should see part 2 (Temple of Doom) and part 3 (Last Crusade), part 3 is debatably even better than the first one (imo). But to the elephant in the room, if this was your first exposure to Harrison Ford - dare I ask, does that mean you've never seen the original Star Wars trilogy? (Harrison Ford was Han Solo) If so - OMG, drop everything and remedy that oversight immediately, lol ("A new hope", "empire strikes back", "return of the jedi"). Other great Harrison Ford movies: The Fugitive, Patriot Games, Blade Runner, Clear & Present Danger, and Air Force One. Cheers

Seeing how much you liked this, definitely continue the Jones movies. The 3rd one, "...and the Last Crusade" is my favorite. For a different Harrison Ford movie, see "The Fugitive", starring him and Tommy Lee Jones. It's one of Ford's and Jones' best and one of the best 90s movies.
You will looooove this. All the movies you've watched except Silence of the Lambs (only read the book), I seen on the big screen on opening day or week and they were awesome. I remember seeing this movie in the theatre and walking out thoroughly jazzed. Such an excellent movie. I've SINCE found out that a good friend in which I was smitten with was planning to kiss me during the tent scene but she got cold feet and didn't. I found this out more than thirty years later and since have wondered what life would have been if she did. Raiders of the Lost Ark has since become one of the movies of my formidable years. That was a true story. My other anecdote regarding this movie is after I bought the score on audiocassette (yes, I'm old), I would play the Truck Chase track to give me supernatural power whenever my brother (the athlete) and I got into a wrestling match. It worked too. However, once the track ended, I was helpless in a full nelson banging on the wall for my Mom to come in and get my brother off of me. Still, never underestimate the power of a John Williams score.
I was 13 when this came out and my friends and I went in knowing nothing about it other than the guy who played Han Solo was in it. This is a perfect movie.👍
Harris Ford had a comment in the AFT award - «This damned music is following me everywhere». (BJ - exactly right - this is the music for rescueing stranded women. Great comment.)
@@toodlescae The General - made by Buster Keaton. The stunts and comedic storytelling are amazing. I do wish the plot line didn’t have the hero of the story fighting in the Confederate side of the US Civil War, but the plot doesn’t really get into the morals of the two sides and why their fighting so apart from the name you could pretty much replace it with any other war for the sake of the story.

Great reaction! As others have stated, the Ark of the Covenant was a symbol of good and held the original Ten Commandments (and manna from heaven given to the Israelites as they fled Egypt). No one could touch the ark which is why it is always transferred using poles. The two sequels are worth watching but I like the third one the best…you could literally even skip 2 story wise, but a lot of people love 2. 🤷🏻♀️
Yeah it wasn't "evil spirits". It was angels and the power of God. Turns out when Nazis try and harness the power of God, God answers "No" very firmly. It's a very old school biblical end.
Hey Asia and BJ, I know you loved the spider gag with INdy and his assistant. The spider wrangler had to place a female spider among all the other male spiders to make them get agitated and move otherwise they looked like fake prop spiders. I know you love the fact that Spielberg went to such lengths to make sure you would cringe at the full 100%. Like a visit to the forbidden forest. HA
when Indy was face to face with the Cobra, that was real... but, there was a very thick and very clean pane of glass between them. The Submarine is a diesel-electric boat, they run on the surface unless they are under attack. Make sure you watch the rest of the movies; you will see that warehouse again. 😎

This movie and "Mister Roberts" (1955) made me realize that Letterbox was the way to go with widescreen movies. For a movie based on 1930's/1940's cliffhanger movies, it has enough action for THREE 1980's Action Adventure movies. I have heard that Karen Allen refused to be a "shrinking violet/damsel-in-distress" and stuck with "two-fisted Marion Ravenwood," a match for "Dr. Henry Jones Jr." This is my desert island/stranded in Belter space movie.;) The "Indiana Jones Tales" are better than current Hollyweird Dumpster Fires.
Genuinely one of the greatest adventure movies of all time. Fun fact about the origins of it. Spielberg had wanted to make a James Bond movie but couldn't get the rights to do one as he was a relatively small time director at the time, only having a few big named films under his belt. His friend George Lucas brought him in on an alternate idea of doing an old school adventure story instead, inspired by the serials that the two of them had grown up watching. So Indiana Jones was born. Keep this in mind in a couple movies when certain other characters get introduced, that James Bond connection is pretty telling then.
The "Sand" in the Ark was what was left of the Stone Tablets God had written the Commandments on and the "Spirits" were Angels God had Tasked with enacting Vengeance against anyone who attempted to Open the Ark. "What was in the Ark was not meant for Human Eyes to see". That's why they left Indie/Marion alone. GREAT Reaction!
The Raiders of the Lost Ark show at Universal is one of my earliest memories. my grandparents took me for my first time when I was about 6. I'll remember that trip for the rest of my life. great reaction.

One of my Favorites.. Indiana Jones is dear to my heart. When I seen this at the movies when I was 11yrs..thats feel in love with Harrison Ford and Archeology. Theres 4 Indiana Jones Movies: "The Lost Ark", "Temple of Doom", "Last Crusade"(my favorite one;Sean Connery also in it)& "The Crystal Skull" and theres a new one in works i heard. Yeah!! FYI BJ: since the part where he went under the car was one of your favs parts... Harrison actually did that himself..not a stunt guy! He did all his stunts in all the Indiana movies.. even the last one when he was in his 70s.. Amazing man he is!! Love ya both..you guys soo funny and glad you liked it! You were right the first time. The Indiana Jones stunt show is at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. The park used to be called Disney’s MGM Studios, so it was likely still MGM when you went. The show still exists today and is still at the park

And Tomb Raider took direct inspiration from Indiana Jones, but made Lara a British Woman to separate her from Indy. I was 5 when this was released. You can bet my mother would not have let me see this if she knew what happened in the climax!
That's not why there's a woman as the main character in Tomb Raider. That happened because they thought players would rather look at a woman's butt for hours than a man's. Seriously, that's why.
once upon a time, movies were shorter, and theaters showed "short subjects," little short movies before the main feature. some of these shorts were action serials. They would always end with a cliffhanger, and ask you to come back next week to see the conclusion. that's what inspired this movie
This really started the renaissance for this sort of adventure filled with derring-do and big action set pieces. It really is what could be described as a ripping good yarn that rarely pauses to let the audience catch their collective breath. There has been several sequels, some like the second-Temple of Doom-but I thought it was a disappointment. However the third-Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is almost as good as this one with an ideally cast Sean Connery as Indy's equally adventurous father. Another fun film in this genre though totally unrelated to this series is the 1999 version of The Mummy with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Avoid the wretched 2017 remake with Tom Cruise, it is beyond awful.
Fun fact, the staff Indiana Jones uses to find the burial ground of the Ark is stated to be 5 feet tall, which means Jones himself is about 4"6, which means the entire world it takes place in is miniature, and the huge German he fights would be a regular guy.

The Ark of the Covenant is from the Old Testament. Built by the Jews on the orders of God. That warehouse was the place, where they store all of the ancient artifacts, they box them up and put them away for safe keeping, and now the ark is there too
An adventure film like this depends on a younger summer-vacation audience, and an "R" rating would sink that hope but good. Spielberg and Lucas fought tooth and nail to keep RAIDERS PG, and they got an amazing number of violent acts past the censors, right up to Marion machine-gunning Nazi soldiers and the Ark melting the baddies' faces. The censors drew the line at Belloq's final fate, however. "You show his head exploding, it's an R rating!" They finally managed a compromise: His head is obscured by a wall of flames when it explodes. I recommend all the Indiana Jones movies, even City of the Crystal Skull (never understood the hatred for that), but RAIDERS is by far the best. I rank it my 3rd favorite movie of all time. P.S.: The Nazi Monkey had to die.
21:27 One of the greatest interstitial exposition scenes in all of the history cinema. Only matched by the lighting of the beacons in LOTR. The music, perfect. The shots, perfect. The nonverbal storytelling, absolutely perfect. The map room scene is iconic.
I love the fact that The Big Bang Theory pointed out the huge flaw in this movie. Amy explained to the guys, after watching this movie for the first time, that Indiana Jones has no part in the plot. Without him the nazis would have still gone to Nepal, acquired the head piece, had the correct length of the staff, found the ark, taken it to the island, opened it, and all died. He played no part in the films sequence of events. All he accomplished was getting the girl and getting the ark in the hands of the American government.
Just a fun little story. You guys talked about seeing the show live at Universal. The guy who plays Indiana Jones in the live show is my gymnastics coach! He retired because he had to have 2 knee replacements (I've had 3 back surgeries... gymnastics isn't the best for your body). But depending on how long ago you went... you got to see my old coach in action! We all went to watch him perform many times. He did an incredible job ❤️ love watching you guys discover these timeless movies.
I'm sure people have/will mention this a hundred times for you guys but this is another little fun fact for this movie: The scene where the swordsman was flashing his sword and putting on a show was supposed to be a regular sword fight but when it was supposed to happen, Harrison Ford (along with most of the crew) were really sick from food poisoning! So after a few unsuccessful attempts, Ford suggested he just "shoot the sucker" and Spielberg immediately filmed it. It was WAY funnier and more entertaining than the sword fight ever would've been for sure!
My gosh, you two, I can't tell you how many reactions of _Raiders_ I've seen, and yours is hands-down the best one in a long, long time! Glad you now have context to what you saw at Universal Studios, and yes you pick up much more on repeat viewings. Snitches get poison dates, haha! I'm not a fan of the 2nd one, but the 3rd one is great.
I was in tech school for the Air Force when this was in the theater. I saw it with two other guys on a Sunday afternoon. When it ended, we immediately looked at each other and knew that we were going to watch it a second time, making an entire day of it.
Btw, another movie you two might really enjoy is "O' Brother, Where Art Thou?" It's a fun Cohen brothers' movie with George Clooney as a depression era escaped prisoner trying to get home, but having all sorts of adventures along the way. There's a lot of really good "old timey" music in the film too, in fact, the soundtrack won a bunch of awards. So music and comedy, a two fer for you! 😀 Oh yeah, and it's basically a retelling of Homer's The Odyssey, so some classical literature thrown in there as well, LOL! I think you will like it!
Belloq impersonated a priest, soldiers opened the ark, Toht mocked the tablet ashes, Dietrich grabbed them and threw them on down in anger...yeah those boys had no chance after mocking god like that. Belloqs fate is the worst - his body is the only one taken to up to be punished more.
His friend in Cairo played "Gimli" the dwarf in The Lord of the Rings series and also the voice of Treebeard. Marion was always the best leading lady. I was thrilled when they brought her back in The Crystal Skull.
In 1984 or 1985, a teacher in my high school showed this over the course of two days. He claimed it was because it showed how academic pursuits could be melded with real life interests or some other nonsense. A few years later, I ran into him and asked what was the real purpose of showing that movie. He admitted it was his favorite movie and wanted to share it with his students.
I had a music teacher in 6th grade who did the same thing but with Star Wars. He said to vice principal, "These kids need to learn how a real orchestra should sound and how it sets the tone of a scene in film", and when the coast was clear he openly told us students, "I just wanna make you all watch my favorite movie."

I had a science class in 9th grade and we were talking about the solar system. My teacher showed us Total Recall to tie into our learning about Mars. The first time the three boobed girl shows up he covered the TV with a piece of paper. The second time he forgot.
We watched Jurassic Park in one of my Science classes at my (Christian) school. It was awesome! (of course, it was also my copy of the movie that the teacher borrowed, so that was awesome, too, lol). This was in the mid to late 90s and most of the students hadn't seen it, yet.
We took our son to see Indiana Jones when he was six. He decided then and there that he wanted to be an Archaeologist. He started his college studies here in the US and received his PhD in Archaeology in Scotland. One of my graduation gifts to him was an official Indiana Jones hat. At his graduation party, the hat was passed around with oohs and ahhs by all his fellow graduates.

I LOVE the scene between Indy and the swordsman. It was originally supposed to be a big sword fight between the two, but Harrison Ford was sick at the time the scene was shot and he decided it would work to just pull his gun and shoot him. Obviously that wasn’t the script, but it became one of the most famous scenes of the movie. 😂 LEGENDS!

Speaking of all those wooden crates that the government had sealed and stored away, I used to work as a volunteer in a museum. And one of the staff workers at the museum told me that there was maybe only 20 percent of the museum collection on display to the public. The rest of the collection was stored away in the museum and some of it hadn't even been looked at since about maybe 1920. There was things like dinosaur fossils, etc.
They are covering up the true history of the Earth. Especially anything to do with Nephilim fossils. The world doesn't work the way most people think it does

Marianne is my favorite of the "love interests"...ever. She is such a badass, one of the first who didn't just stand and scream, but was quite happy to lend a hand in putting down the bad guys. Love her.
The fact that the U-boat never went underwater is surprisingly period-accurate.
Submarines of that era traveled on the surface as much as possible, and only went underwater for combat. Because they couldn't run their diesel engines underwater without air, and the battery technology they used for underwater was a lot cruder than now.
Plus a sub under water is much much slower than on the surface.
If this was mentioned I apologize for repeating it...... When they are in the original room with the ark, you have to pay close attention to the hieroglyphs carved into the walls around the ark. One set of them is R2D2 and C3PO carved into the glyphs :)

Imagine a time where there was no internet, no smart phones, no on-demand. Nothing but the summer vacation filled by the newest, best movies. Put yourself in a dark theater with a tub of buttered popcorn in front of a 30 foot tall screen! The closeups, the shadows, the gun shots and of course, THE MUSIC! When this came out it was like NOTHING that had been seen before! Hell, from 6th to 8th grade I went as Indiana Jones for Halloween. I had the whip, I had the fedora, I had the brown shirt and pants and jacket! We couldn't stop talking about the rolling stone, the snakes, the melting heads and, of course, Jones going under the truck! It's campy without being campy. It's fun, it's violent, it's smart. It's funny as hell! The pace is absolutely breakneck! The cinematography is artwork. The set pieces are AMAZING! The story is top notch! The acting, directing, the score.... Good lord!
We were SO LUCKY growing up to have Spielberg and Lucas provide us the imagination with Williams providing the soundtrack! Jaws, Close Encounters, ET, Star Wars, Raiders! Year after year, those three took my generation on one adventure after another! Under the sea, into the biblical supernatural, into space! Never before and never again have three people DOMINATED a generation of cinema!

You guys are great with movie reactions! The Ark is not an evil artifact though.The Ark of the Covenant symbolized God’s agreement with the ancient Israelites and was supposedly the resting place of the original stone tablets that the 10 Commandments were struck on. So there is no evil connected to the Ark. But there were very specific rules on how it was handled and who could even see it. That’s why Indiana Jones had himself and Marian close their eyes. That’s why they survived. So the Ark isn’t evil, but the Nazis were. They also violated the sanctity of the Ark and they all died. When you see the swastika burn off the crate in the movie, It’s because it’s a symbol of evil.
Please read Genesis thru 2nd Kings to see how the Arc or the Covenant plays a crucial role in the Bible.
Actually, until the Nazis used the Swastika, it was an ancient symbol of peace. I had always interpreted that scene as the Ark burning the symbol away to hide itself amongst the cargo to disguise itself. But I guess 15,000 years as a symbol of good luck was over shadowed by a few decades of Nazi use. As with any symbol or epitaph, intent and use mean more to me than anything. If I see a swastika on an Buddihst temple, it won't bother me. I see it on a red arm band, I'll have concern.
To be historically accurate, there would have actually been ancient swastikas on the Ark, but I'm sure that would have confused most people watching the movie...

It occurs to me for the first time, because I only just looked at the rules for handling the Ark, that Belloch, with his level of knowledge, should have known not to open the Ark, or it would have been a bad day.

The scene of the fight at the plane, the German "boxer guy" was actually an English 70/80s wrestler called Pat Roach. He was fantastic.
harrison ford also tore his knee ligaments in a failed stunt during the flying wing fight. producer frank marshall was the pilot in that scene.
And VFX guy dennis muren cameo'd as the nazi reading the magazine on the plane indy flew on.
Roach also 'died' in the bar in Nepal where Indy went to retrieve that medallion; he was the one that caught on fire, I believe.

I remember standing in line for several hours with my brother to see this movie when it came out. Back then, there weren’t many, if any, big multiplex cinemas in the US. But DAMN it was so worth it. This was the first ever collab between George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg. Not the only collab (Willow) but it was the first. And damn was it epic. I love this movie now as much as I did when I saw it in the theater. 🔥

The theater in Orange Park Florida just outside Jacksonville was showing this and I remember one entire wall in the main foyer had hand painted scenes and images from the movie. Since I had not yet seen it, I found myself staring at everything thinking 'what the hell' - after I saw the movie it all made sense.

A sarcophagus is where they put a mummy. The Ark of the Covenant is where they stored the original stone tablets for the ten commandments. It was rumored that the Ark contained the power of God which was so powerful no man could lay his hands on it or pay the consequences with death. That is why the Ark has those two poles that people use to carry it.

Indiana's reaction to the big dude in black with the gigantic saber - when he pulled the gun and shot him - was unscripted! Harrison Ford was just told to do whatever, and he just said nope and shot him! So good they left it in the movie! Great scene!

Ford had dysentery, and a temperature of 102. There was a scripted fight scene, too long and physical for his condition. It was re-scripted when Ford had the idea to shoot him, but no, you don't just start firing firearms on a movie set on a whim.

Raiders of the lost Ark has a special place in my heart, it’s a little bit sad and deeply personal, but isn’t that what we’re all here for, to share a little bit of ourselves? I don’t mind sharing with the Asia and BJ family💚 my father had just taken his own life and I was grieving when this movie came out. My mom took me to see it just to take my mind off things for a bit (as if that was possible right but what else was she going to do?) it’s such a great movie and I wish I could separate the two events, but the brain just doesn’t work that way, every time I see the words Raiders of the lost Ark I turn into a 12 year old again. same thing happens with Empire Strikes Back, it’s the last movie I saw with my dad before he chose to leave us. And actually, the same thing happens with a lot of the 80s songs that my beloved reactors are doing a lot these days, and every one of them is an opportunity to heal the heart a little bit more.

The scene where Indy shoots the swordsman was pure improv. Harrison Ford and a lot of the cast and crew had dysentery and he was sick and exhausted. Instead of fighting the guy as the script was written, he just pulled his gun and shot him. It worked so well that they kept it in the film.

yes, but Harrison Ford made the suggestion to Spielberg after a number of takes of the script. Spielberg liked it, approved the change and so then they filmed it.
Fun fact but the sub was loaned to them by the film crew for Das Boot which was filming in the same area.
The importance of the Ark of the Covenant is explained in the Bible in the book of Exodus. It explains exactly why unconsecrated hands cannot touch it and why people fall dead immediately when they do.
The Ark of the Covenant contains the agreement between God and the Israelites. It contains the Ten Commandments. Having a swastika on a box containing sacred Jewish artifacts of the highest order is not a good mix so you can see why it burned off.

Ford has injured his knee while fighting the German mechanic. It took him a few weeks to recover before filming commenced.
Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Ford and Speilberg whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches, jus like the Arnold and Director McTiernan on PREDATOR.

The Ark of the Covenant isn't evil, it's just the vessel thar holds the stones that the 10 Commandments are written on.

That native looking guy is Alfred Molina. This is Al's first role. He will later go on to play Doc Ock in Spiderman.
With the ark being hidden in the top secret facility, it still is held by the US. The meaning behind it is what was said at the beginning: The army that carries the ark before it is invincible - a nod to America's dominance in the world order post WWII. I always liked that little touch at the end. Small, but significant.
The actor BJ recognized is John Rhys-Davies. He's been a supporting actor in a lot of movies and tv shows.
The scene where Indy just shoots the big guy with the sword happened because Harrison Ford was sick - he couldn't stay out of the bathroom that long. So they just had him shoot instead of having a fight scene.
Spielberg made this movie as an homage to the old serials. They were shorts that were shown prior to the main feature at theaters. They generally ran 15 or so minutes and ended with the hero in some impossible situation - a cliffhanger. You had to come back the next week to see how he got out of it. This is the reason Indiana goes from one situation to the next. This movie is made as if a whole series of serial programs were stitched together.
The ending means the US government knows it exactly what it has, and it's storing it in that giant warehouse with all the other secret artifacts it has found. The government understands it's not something to be messed with. Enjoyed watching with you!
Just for the scene in the map room, and Indy vs the truck with the score going full blast would make this one of the greatest movies ever made. But it's just amazing from start to finish.
Definitely watch the next two films, (you can skip the 4th if you feel like it, even though it does have a couple of okay moments).
"Temple of Doom" is interesting, but different.. The events depicted in that film were actually prior to the events of "Raiders of the Lost Ark".
"The Last Crusade" is personally one of my faves, only surpassed by "Raiders"...
Woohoo! This is one of the all-time great movie franchises, written by George Lucas (star wars) and directed by Steven Spielberg (Jaws). YES - you should see part 2 (Temple of Doom) and part 3 (Last Crusade), part 3 is debatably even better than the first one (imo).
But to the elephant in the room, if this was your first exposure to Harrison Ford - dare I ask, does that mean you've never seen the original Star Wars trilogy? (Harrison Ford was Han Solo) If so - OMG, drop everything and remedy that oversight immediately, lol ("A new hope", "empire strikes back", "return of the jedi").
Other great Harrison Ford movies: The Fugitive, Patriot Games, Blade Runner, Clear & Present Danger, and Air Force One.

For a different Harrison Ford movie, see "The Fugitive", starring him and Tommy Lee Jones. It's one of Ford's and Jones' best and one of the best 90s movies.
You will looooove this. All the movies you've watched except Silence of the Lambs (only read the book), I seen on the big screen on opening day or week and they were awesome. You do two things, let us remember how fun the move was and the reactions. The other Raiders movies were good. I hope you haven't seen Jurassic Park yet. They can't or don't real Blockbusters anymore
I remember seeing this movie in the theatre and walking out thoroughly jazzed. Such an excellent movie. I've SINCE found out that a good friend in which I was smitten with was planning to kiss me during the tent scene but she got cold feet and didn't. I found this out more than thirty years later and since have wondered what life would have been if she did. Raiders of the Lost Ark has since become one of the movies of my formidable years. That was a true story.
My other anecdote regarding this movie is after I bought the score on audiocassette (yes, I'm old), I would play the Truck Chase track to give me supernatural power whenever my brother (the athlete) and I got into a wrestling match. It worked too. However, once the track ended, I was helpless in a full nelson banging on the wall for my Mom to come in and get my brother off of me. Still, never underestimate the power of a John Williams score.
I was 13 when this came out and my friends and I went in knowing nothing about it other than the guy who played Han Solo was in it. This is a perfect movie.👍
Harris Ford had a comment in the AFT award - «This damned music is following me everywhere». (BJ - exactly right - this is the music for rescueing stranded women. Great comment.)
I can always recommend even older movies if you like. One of my favorite movie franchises started in 1934.

@@toodlescae The General - made by Buster Keaton. The stunts and comedic storytelling are amazing. I do wish the plot line didn’t have the hero of the story fighting in the Confederate side of the US Civil War, but the plot doesn’t really get into the morals of the two sides and why their fighting so apart from the name you could pretty much replace it with any other war for the sake of the story.

Great reaction! As others have stated, the Ark of the Covenant was a symbol of good and held the original Ten Commandments (and manna from heaven given to the Israelites as they fled Egypt). No one could touch the ark which is why it is always transferred using poles. The two sequels are worth watching but I like the third one the best…you could literally even skip 2 story wise, but a lot of people love 2. 🤷🏻♀️

Yeah it wasn't "evil spirits". It was angels and the power of God. Turns out when Nazis try and harness the power of God, God answers "No" very firmly. It's a very old school biblical end.
Hey Asia and BJ, I know you loved the spider gag with INdy and his assistant. The spider wrangler had to place a female spider among all the other male spiders to make them get agitated and move otherwise they looked like fake prop spiders. I know you love the fact that Spielberg went to such lengths to make sure you would cringe at the full 100%. Like a visit to the forbidden forest. HA
when Indy was face to face with the Cobra, that was real... but, there was a very thick and very clean pane of glass between them.
The Submarine is a diesel-electric boat, they run on the surface unless they are under attack.

This movie and "Mister Roberts" (1955) made me realize that Letterbox was the way to go with widescreen movies. For a movie based on 1930's/1940's cliffhanger movies, it has enough action for THREE 1980's Action Adventure movies. I have heard that Karen Allen refused to be a "shrinking violet/damsel-in-distress" and stuck with "two-fisted Marion Ravenwood," a match for "Dr. Henry Jones Jr." This is my desert island/stranded in Belter space movie.;) The "Indiana Jones Tales" are better than current Hollyweird Dumpster Fires.
There had NEVER been an action movie like this before. This started the modern action film era.
Genuinely one of the greatest adventure movies of all time. Fun fact about the origins of it. Spielberg had wanted to make a James Bond movie but couldn't get the rights to do one as he was a relatively small time director at the time, only having a few big named films under his belt. His friend George Lucas brought him in on an alternate idea of doing an old school adventure story instead, inspired by the serials that the two of them had grown up watching. So Indiana Jones was born. Keep this in mind in a couple movies when certain other characters get introduced, that James Bond connection is pretty telling then.
The "Sand" in the Ark was what was left of the Stone Tablets God had written the Commandments on and the "Spirits" were Angels God had Tasked with enacting Vengeance against anyone who attempted to Open the Ark. "What was in the Ark was not meant for Human Eyes to see". That's why they left Indie/Marion alone.

The Raiders of the Lost Ark show at Universal is one of my earliest memories. my grandparents took me for my first time when I was about 6. I'll remember that trip for the rest of my life. great reaction.

You were right the first time. The Indiana Jones stunt show is at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. The park used to be called Disney’s MGM Studios, so it was likely still MGM when you went. The show still exists today and is still at the park
Would love to see a reaction to “Undercover Brother” starring Eddie Griffin and Dave Chappelle! And Tomb Raider took direct inspiration from Indiana Jones, but made Lara a British Woman to separate her from Indy. I was 5 when this was released. You can bet my mother would not have let me see this if she knew what happened in the climax!
That's not why there's a woman as the main character in Tomb Raider. That happened because they thought players would rather look at a woman's butt for hours than a man's. Seriously, that's why.

This really started the renaissance for this sort of adventure filled with derring-do and big action set pieces. It really is what could be described as a ripping good yarn that rarely pauses to let the audience catch their collective breath.
There has been several sequels, some like the second-Temple of Doom-but I thought it was a disappointment. However the third-Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is almost as good as this one with an ideally cast Sean Connery as Indy's equally adventurous father.
Another fun film in this genre though totally unrelated to this series is the 1999 version of The Mummy with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Avoid the wretched 2017 remake with Tom Cruise, it is beyond awful.
Fun fact, the staff Indiana Jones uses to find the burial ground of the Ark is stated to be 5 feet tall, which means Jones himself is about 4"6, which means the entire world it takes place in is miniature, and the huge German he fights would be a regular guy.

The Ark of the Covenant is from the Old Testament. Built by the Jews on the orders of God. That warehouse was the place, where they store all of the ancient artifacts, they box them up and put them away for safe keeping, and now the ark is there too
An adventure film like this depends on a younger summer-vacation audience, and an "R" rating would sink that hope but good. Spielberg and Lucas fought tooth and nail to keep RAIDERS PG, and they got an amazing number of violent acts past the censors, right up to Marion machine-gunning Nazi soldiers and the Ark melting the baddies' faces. The censors drew the line at Belloq's final fate, however. "You show his head exploding, it's an R rating!" They finally managed a compromise: His head is obscured by a wall of flames when it explodes.
I recommend all the Indiana Jones movies, even City of the Crystal Skull (never understood the hatred for that), but RAIDERS is by far the best. I rank it my 3rd favorite movie of all time.

I love the fact that The Big Bang Theory pointed out the huge flaw in this movie. Amy explained to the guys, after watching this movie for the first time, that Indiana Jones has no part in the plot.
Without him the nazis would have still gone to Nepal, acquired the head piece, had the correct length of the staff, found the ark, taken it to the island, opened it, and all died. He played no part in the films sequence of events. All he accomplished was getting the girl and getting the ark in the hands of the American government.
Indiana Jones? This will be great, let's start the ball rolling!

Just a fun little story. You guys talked about seeing the show live at Universal. The guy who plays Indiana Jones in the live show is my gymnastics coach! He retired because he had to have 2 knee replacements (I've had 3 back surgeries... gymnastics isn't the best for your body). But depending on how long ago you went... you got to see my old coach in action! We all went to watch him perform many times. He did an incredible job ❤️ love watching you guys discover these timeless movies.

I'm sure people have/will mention this a hundred times for you guys but this is another little fun fact for this movie:
The scene where the swordsman was flashing his sword and putting on a show was supposed to be a regular sword fight but when it was supposed to happen, Harrison Ford (along with most of the crew) were really sick from food poisoning! So after a few unsuccessful attempts, Ford suggested he just "shoot the sucker" and Spielberg immediately filmed it. It was WAY funnier and more entertaining than the sword fight ever would've been for sure!
My gosh, you two, I can't tell you how many reactions of _Raiders_ I've seen, and yours is hands-down the best one in a long, long time! Glad you now have context to what you saw at Universal Studios, and yes you pick up much more on repeat viewings. Snitches get poison dates, haha! I'm not a fan of the 2nd one, but the 3rd one is great.

I was in tech school for the Air Force when this was in the theater. I saw it with two other guys on a Sunday afternoon. When it ended, we immediately looked at each other and knew that we were going to watch it a second time, making an entire day of it.
Btw, another movie you two might really enjoy is "O' Brother, Where Art Thou?" It's a fun Cohen brothers' movie with George Clooney as a depression era escaped prisoner trying to get home, but having all sorts of adventures along the way. There's a lot of really good "old timey" music in the film too, in fact, the soundtrack won a bunch of awards. So music and comedy, a two fer for you! 😀 Oh yeah, and it's basically a retelling of Homer's The Odyssey, so some classical literature thrown in there as well, LOL! I think you will like it!
Belloq impersonated a priest, soldiers opened the ark, Toht mocked the tablet ashes, Dietrich grabbed them and threw them on down in anger...yeah those boys had no chance after mocking god like that. Belloqs fate is the worst - his body is the only one taken to up to be punished more.

His friend in Cairo played "Gimli" the dwarf in The Lord of the Rings series and also the voice of Treebeard. Marion was always the best leading lady. I was thrilled when they brought her back in The Crystal Skull.
