Really enjoyed that discussion. Having watched your series, it is very interesting to hear these topics now that you have had time to reflect. Good job..looking forward to the next episode. 👍
There was a time I wasn't sure we'd be back on here, but having that time away to reflect and come up with new ideas really helped. Glad you're enjoying it!
Excellent video!! Love the new format!! Very informative and real!! I like how you were honest of the burn out and needing to get away and missing family and friends! I worry about that as well for when we start our adventure in 2 years! We have a2 year old grandson and it’s so hard to be away from him and we’re already far away from him now. I guess we’ll have to save up to ship him and his parents out to wherever we’re sailing for a visit!!!
Very useful information. Catamaran set up and catamaran choice for cruising would be helpful, although I know that you already made a video on that subject. Great job!
I've been trying to work out a video talking about what choices we made that ended up being great, and others we wouldn't do again. A bit of a follow up to the set-up video.
Really amazing clear videos .Thanks for your effort and clarity .I 'm whish to know how to and wher i can download chart for West coast of south America .in particular Chile and Patagonia .Thanks again
I know you guys suffered burnout before with these videos so I just thought I’d leave a comment of appreciation because I’ve loved your videos. They are real, not overly polished, practical, and still capture the wonder than is a circumnavigation. To those of us dreaming of and planning (very soon we aim to buy in 6 months!!!) to move aboard they are a wonderful resource and some of the best made sailing videos on UA-cam at the moment. Keep it up (maybe in a more sustainable way - none of us will begrudge a few less videos a month if it protects your mental health )👍 Also for future videos - what about useful skills to learn/courses to take before going cruising? I’ve been considering things like wilderness medicine, learning to sew, maybe basic diesel repair, etc.
So very happy to see you guys back and doing ok. ThankYou for doing this video of the honest realities of the live aboard cruising lifestyle. This video, in my opinion, is a must watch for anyone considering this lifestyle, and also watching your complete videos of your journey. I’m not surprised that you guys got into burnout territory. Filiming and editing is a huge chunk out of your time that you sacrifice to document your travels that isn’t spent enjoying your surroundings or doing the maintenance or enjoying the relaxing opportunities, or that quality time together. I hope that you guys concentrate on yourselves more now and visit more places and revisit those that are special to you, and hopefully can take the rest of us along for a little part of it. Fair winds and following seas. Cheers from WA 🇦🇺
I envie you for your experiences. Luckily, thanks to your experiences you made me a part of it. THANK YOU! My regards to Amy. Hope to see her soon in these upcoming vlogs.
Hi Kjell! So great to hear from you! You guys were definitely part of the reason that Tonga ranked so high on our favorites list! Say hi to Adriana and Kristian for us!
For few Challenges worth mentioning which on the hind side are now Just sweet memories like Running out of Fule in the Middle of the Indian Ocean OR Losing a prop while struggling out of a 40 knots storm. You and Amy are sort of Inspiration to Us. Love the way you narrate things. GOOD LUCK.
I'd thought about doing a more indepth video on an incident like those. Kind of walking through what I was thinking and how we approached solving the problem. But we don't have much footage of those moments because the last thing we wanted to do was get the camera out while we were going through them. We'll see if I can come up with some way to make it interesting.
Excellent Video, on the the best I have seen ( and I have seen thousands on cruising) question: If you only had 3 year max what routes or places would you not visit? how would you make the best usage of 3Y?
One thing not mentioned is cash on hand or financial where with all to meet all contingencies such as boat haul out, repair, expensive parts replacement, long refits and upgrades, car rentals and hotel for touring, medical expenses and flying home from anywhere on earth when the need arises.
That was such a great overview! Awesome. Keep sharing your experience and stories. question - so where are you planning on sailing now? Mediterranean when covid restrictions ease up or maybe back to French Polynesia? Cheers
The immediate plan is to cruise the Chesapeake for the rest of hurricane season and then sail down to the Bahamas. After that who knows??? The Med is something we've definitely discussed and we'd _love_ to get back to French Polynesia someday.
Great stuff David! I know I've commented on you other videos talking about the specifics of sailing in certain areas, and for a person like me who is in the initial stages of planning a circumnavigation, this is the kind of information that is priceless. Thanks, and I am looking forward to more. I would like to see one from Amy too from her perspective, and the challenges she faced. As I move through this with my wife, she definitely wonders what that looks like for her.
If you had the opportunity to do it again to circumnavigate… how would you do it, why n what preps would you change/ upgrades???its easy to see how you did in the past looking at all your previous video but hoping you would share your bountiful experience do/dont n why… this is very valuable for new boaters/ yachters who are planning to embark on this kindda adventure … thank you for sharing… stay safe n stay healthy…. Just saw a video “ Barefoot doctors sailing “ who just lost their catamaran in a fire while they were away in Australia😭😭😭😭
Well done I enjoyed your story and look forward to seeing where you go with your channel. We are older Australian cruisers living the dream, sailing the Australian coast only. SV Ciao Bella
Gosh, I really wish you two would start up this channel again. Your videos are stand-out exceptional information. No one else documents like this.. no one else puts out this kind of information - It’s all click-bait!
This might be a dumb question, but is it possible to get a decend internet connection in the middle of the Ocean? And if so, what does that cost? I am thinking if its possible to work online while sailing. 130k is quite a lot of savings to have before even starting. Plus the Price of the boat. I guess most people would need some sort of income while sailing. How do you do that? THANKS for a really Great video.
Let's do the math. $16,000 per year in repair and maintenance equals $68k over the duration of our circumnavigation (4.25 years). Over the entire time we've owned the boat it'd be $112k. And it's actually impossible to judge how much we'll lose in depreciation on the boat because we haven't sold yet and the market is changing all the time. But I'd guess well into the 6 figures.
I'm thinking, it's safe to say that the cost of cruising would include youtube and associated patreons, advertisers, discounts from advertisers and amazon commision/income. so what is the break down on youtube costs versus youtube, advertiser/s, patreon and amazon incomes? how did that offset your budget? if you would please. being a youtuber, i can't see how that can be left out and still be an accurate summary. otherwise, this was a nice summary. I liked your approach quite a bit, especially compared to most. I remember one that instead of avoiding the above mentioned (as ya'll did), flat lied about it. thank you for not doing so. part of my affection for ya'll is what appears to be inherent honesty (unlike a few youtubers). i know you skirted the subject, but if you'd please, give us a medical insurance/preparedness options summary, as ya'll have learned it. what was the value of your boat and it's assumed depreciation? I know some of these questions are assumed "private". but, in my eyes anyhow, by opening up your life to youtube as a business, and accepting patreon income, I'd think a certain amount of privacy might not be quite so private anymore. (similar, yet slightly different than political office). much appreciated, and again, nice video, as usual. thank ya'll.
We actually don't do patreon or run any ads on our videos. Affiliate links have brought in less than $3k over the last 7 years. We've gotten a few discounts from marine suppliers but nothing very substantial. So overall, I'd say that "income" is immaterial compared to our expenses, which is why we didn't mention it. I'll look into doing a more in-depth video on health care. Maybe there's an interesting way to share costs/coverage. As we mentioned, that's a very difficult topic given the wide ranges in ages/health but also it varies _a lot_ based on what part of the world you're from and what options are available. US health care coverage isn't particularly awesome. As for the assumed depreciation on our boat, I've mentioned elsewhere that this is again hard to estimate given we haven't sold the boat and the markets are always changing. But I'm estimating we'll lose well into the 6 figures when we sell.
@@OutChasingStars very nice, even comprehensive reply, thank you. maybe why i enjoy your video's. I tend to agree, our usa health options has deteriorated, greatly.
If you walk around a room that means its a sphere? Sailing should prove the opposite. You wouldn't be able to use the stars as a reliable navigation if we were hurting and spinning through space while the sun and the galaxy was spinning and hurtling through space. There would be no fixed north star in the center
That was excellent David! Only thing missing was Amy. Thank you so much for this retrospective, especially the numbers, and for sharing the coming "continuing voyages" of Starry Horizons! Two things I would love to see and hear about in an upcoming episode are: 1) what you liked and did not like about your Helia, including layout, components, systems, and sail plan, and most importantly, what you would change; and, 2) specifics about the livability aboard while at sea and on the hook, e.g., cooking and cleaning, sleeping while underway, ventilation, storage (wet and dry).
Hi Steve. We're quite happy that we were able to put out so many "adventure" videos of our circumnavigation, but now that the entire thing is documented, we want to do something different. We certainly recognize that this new format won't be for everyone but hopefully there will be some information we can share that you'll find useful. If not, we won't be offended. There are lots of other channels out there still doing the adventure videos that we can all enjoy. 😄
I really liked how David was presenting information he felt people ought to know. It was not just talking heads, he even had some useful charts. I'm an experienced cruisercand found all his material spot on.
If there's ever another voyage planned... consider trying to align up with the path under a complete solar eclipse. I was fortunate enough to have seen one from the vantage point of a span bridge over a river. I bet the experience would be once in a lifetime amazing at sea.
We're still out on the water, so this is a great idea! We've had some memorable moments seeing shooting stars, but a complete solar eclipse would be incredible!
Sailing around the world 🌎 the best education and expiration, learning culture and language. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you & great to have you back!
Great job David, we definitely missed y'all. Give Amy a hug for us.👍💕🐾
Very informative and well presented, thank you!
To be quite honest, I enjoyed this video so much that I would put it in your top 5. 😀
Thank you! Hopefully you'll continue to enjoy the ones that follow as well!
You guys offer such great insights and information, thank you!

look into Marine Starlink
Interesting and eye opening stats.
Interesting presentation guys.
My only suggestion is to change background lighting so the whole field does not look so washed out...
Yeah, we're still working on the studio set up. A boat isn't exactly ideal but we'll keep working on dialing in the look.
Fer sure...! We are in Dallas and try using a an MFD in sunlight... good light ! Brad
Do you think you will go back and cruise the south pacific more thoroughly as liked it so much?
We've definitely talked a lot about going back to the South Pacific. It's on the list of future possibilities for sure!
bro how much did the Catamaran originally cost?
Loved it

Ok but I'd like to know what it takes to upload sailing videos to UA-cam for 5 years and still struggle to reach even 10'000 views.
