  • Today I'm building a king size Mid-Century/Japanese inspired modern platform bed. If you plan to build this for a different size mattress, simply subtract or add the difference in mattress size on the bed. This was a really fun build and a design I wanted to build for a while, so I was really excited to build this one!

    I actually did my first wood working project using this as the template. While it didn't come out perfect, the mistakes can only be seen from underneath and I am super happy. Still solid after one move and 3 years later. Thanks a lot!

    I've been reading up about making a platform bed and it seems to be recommended that you don't have a solid surface underneath the mattress (such as plywood) because you want airflow beneath to help it breathe...

I really love it, because karah explained all tools required to have the job done, not mentioning the fabulous diy pallets ideas. I'm pretty sure this will be a fresh start in my new endeavour. I built this bed in queen size. This video helped so much. Instead of gluing two 4x4s and cutting the rabbet, I glued a 2x4 on a 2x6. It worked great! Industrial by Design sent the legs quickly and your discount code was awesome. This was my first build ever and your video helped so much. I decided not to include the headboard and it still looks and feels great and is such a strong build. "It's better to over build than it is to under build." Thank you for this inspiration, Mike.

    A note for anyone that wants to build this for a memory foam mattress, you can't have a solid surface under a memory foam (or latex) mattress. It needs to be slotted so that it can breathe. Your memory foam manufacturer will include this information when you buy it.

    • @jellyg.8961
      @jellyg.8961 4 роки тому +5

      @@hidigidy pure excuses. This project can be done basically with three tools: a jigsaw, a circular saw and a drill. The planer makes the boards nice and flat but isn't completely necessary, a similar finish can be done with a hand planner or a sander which are cheap tools. I have a corded jigsaw that cost me about $30 new, a Ryobi corded circular saw that cost about $50 new and a Makita drill that I spent about $80. Add the drill bits, jigsaw blades and a better disc for the saw and the cost is near $200, not thousands. The pocket hole jig? Well, if you buy the kreg ones those are expensive, I have a none adjustable one that costs $20 and an adjustable one from Milescraft that cost me $15, both do exactly the same job as the Kreg one.
      A big part of woodworking is to adapt the project to the tools you have and the materials you will use. I have replicated projects I have seen made by UA-camrs with full workshops filled with industrial planers, jointers, big saws and thousands in Festool brand equipment. Mines may not have the craftsmanship perfection of them but still I have made them. If you focus too much on what is used to make stuff instead of how it's done then you will never make anything.

      if you know how to work with wood you just need a saw, drill, square and measuring tape. if you don't have those then you probably need to go to Ikea and buy your furniture...

    • @Sho81
      @Sho81 7 років тому +1

      Lol you are forgetting planes to square up the work. And I don't have a drill per-se. Unless you count a bit and brace. I don't count it as a drill because a drill is a totally different animal to use in my mind.

    I been doing wood working for about 8 years I notice if u get just a 2x4 or plywood if ur going to light stain or a Laquer it I also show my clients finished wood before they make a decision they always choose this slightly burned wood with a laquer or a light stain all I do is get a blow torch and hook it up to a propane tank and carefully go over the wood it will give it a black brownish color it actually looks cool but with a light stain and laquer it’s a rustic modern look. I hope you like the suggestion

      @@AmeeSigner You could make it so much cheaper. You need not go to Home Depot, just repurpose some demolition lumber. 2x2 instead of 2x4, this thing is holding less than 500 lb with 2 people sleeping on it, you need not make it strong enough to hold a car.
