I’m back again. I read The Wide Wide Sea. An amazing, IMMERSIVE, book that I desperately recommend to everyone I know and no matter how I describe it I feel I can’t do it justice. I’ve now bought Blood and Thunder and can’t wait to read it.

No you’re not. The earth is flat. Big Round made Captain Cook (and Hawaii) up in 1800 to hide the failure to find a Northwest passage due to flatness. Look it up.

Thank you! I'll go there to hear what Hampton has to say...Clearly, the host just wants to hear himself talk. Hampton just sat there for the 1st several minutes...It's RUDE to invite a guest and not get to them!!!!!

1976, as a serving member of the Royal Australian Navy, we performed a ceremony at Captain Cooks Memorial Monument.
The Honour Guard was taken ashore on our ships launch. Our Gunnery Officer Lt V was the guard commander. Dressed in his crisp summer whites and as he stepped ashore he was met by a man and woman. They were very obviously living an 'alternative lifestyle'.
From memory this was the first honouring of Captain Cook onsite, since his demise.
I have a b&w photo of the ceremony still.

Anyone interested in the life, death and animals of James Cook should read “Cooks Ark” by New Zealander Alison Sutherland. It’s a fascinating story, esp regarding Cooks demise. Sutherland’s premise is that Cook was killed by Tahitians because they refused to sell him more pigs, those population he’d already depleted.

Always found the hot take of attacking NIMBY's over not wanting a high speed rail through their yard, fracking next to their porch, a quarry across from their driveway, or in this case a monkey farm next to their in-home daycare to be pretty funny, and ultimately out of touch with basic reality coupled with a complete lack of intellectual honesty and emotional maturity.
It's somehow a dig at or a knock on someone who literally doesn't care about the existence of such things, but doesn't want the negative health impacts of having such an activity occuring on, or adjacent to, their property because it'll directly impact their ability to do basic things like sleep, eat outside, or even watch their own TV in peace? Anybody offering criticism to someone over this needs to grow up and learn basic self accountability.
The vast majority of people levying the label of NIMBYism against other are obviously not YIMBY's, or they would have heard of YIMBYism and support it themselves thus eliminating the entire practice of accusing others of NIMBYism while pretending they're morally superior.
So instead of the underdeveloped, ignorant, delusional take that someone shouldn't be able to experience peace and security on their own property, offer your own first.
Until you have a nuclear waste dump, fracking facility, quarry, high speed rail, or monkey farm directly on or adjacent to your own property kindly get off your high horse because your laughable take on basic reality is more obnoxious than a vegan rally protesting an animal shelter.

The idea that one can “discover” regions of the world that have been inhabited for thousands of years is ridiculous.
The false premise that just because he went to these places and documented them does not make this the Genesis of history as most surmise.
These places have their own history, culture and past. We should begin with their history first not what he “ discovered”.
This serves to give a distorted worldview as to the beginning of mans history.
These expeditions were precursors to invasion, persecution and the destruction of culture. The focus was for procurement of natural resources which also included the people as a resource to be used.
