Fantastic portrayal of Simeon by the late great Ralph Richardson. Amusing that a few years later, he would portray God in Time Bandits. Noticed how one of the priests shook his head in disbelief, probably figuring Simeon to just be a crazy old man, but knew that he was harmless and gentle to not deny him holding the Holy Infant as he prophesied of the child's destiny and how it would affect his mother. They still had much to understand about him, considering they still did not fully understand even when he was twelve and explained who he was to them. How sweet it was, regardless, for them to always love him, and for Joseph, to love Jesus as if he really was his son, whom the young Saviour loved and treated in a fatherly way. I also like how this mini-series portrays the death of Joseph, and how he speaks of his great love for Jesus and having done all that was commanded of him by the angels.
Excellent points, Kei Fox - thank you.😀 I wanted to add that one of the things that struck me first in this scene (even watching it as a teenager in the 80s), was that the priest didn't seem to understand Simeon or his message about the infant Savior. To me this indicated the priest's spiritual condition, being that Simeon was clearly indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God in order to correctly discern who Jesus was, even as an infant. One would think that a Spirit-filled rabbinical priest would've recognized God's Son immediately, as Simeon had. Just my thoughts... Thomas in Pittsburgh.
I loved this whole min series but of all the scenes this is my favorite, extending on to when Joseph and Mary go back to the stable and find that visitors have arrived.
@@Magdalenkaization I always took it that Mary knew something was going to happen to Him, but didn’t know the extent or the details of what was to come for her Son
@@low-keydrama1260She knew. All those years spent with Her son Jesus, there’s no telling what He would’ve revealed to Her. When He said to Her, “My hour has not yet come” that presupposes that there was a particular “hour” in His life what was going to occur, that He had previously mentioned to Her.
This part of the movie seems very inaccurate. Luke 2:21 says, “When eight days were completed for his circumcision…” Then, according to Old Covenant law, Mary had to wait an additional 33 days before her purification and presentation of her Son in the Temple. So I don’t believe the circumcision and presentation happened simultaneously. There are other parts of this movie that seem highly inaccurate.
Imagine how surreal it must have been for Mary The Word of God through whom all things were made, became flesh through her and probably inherited physical traits such hers her eyes or nose or chin who knows what else. And that’s not even just thinking about the fact the creator took on a human nature in the most miraculous way and it’s ramifications in regards to the material world. Jesus didn’t just redeem man, he redeemed creation and the creations of man as a whole
#Circumcise And when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, his name was called JESUS, which was so called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. (Luke 2:21 ASV) On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.” (Luke 1:59-60 NIV)
And the very next verse says "when the days of their purification were completed, they brought Him up to Jerusalem". Ced is right on the Jewish chronology.

Yes, Jesus was circumcised in Bethlehem after 8 days, as it is written. However, Simeon did not acknowledge Jesus until Joseph and Mary brought Him to the temple in Jerusalem to be dedicated, 40 days after His circumcision. Both Simeon and Anna the prophetess lived in Jerusalem, serving God at His temple there. Please read Luke 2:21-38. I hope this helped you, friend.
My favorite Simeon scene on film. It makes the hair stand up on my arm and neck when Simeon enters and says "Where is HE?!" 🙏❤

Olivia Hussey playing Mary was so pretty when she was young in this movie.
This Is So Touching
2:07 aaaaaaw
Wonderful performance by Sir Ralph Richardson
I understand movie-makers compressing things, but the circumscision was eight days after birth & the Presentation was 40 days after.
