Parable of the prodigal son from the film Jesus of Nazareth

  • Jesus teaching the parable of the prodigal son, who wasted his inheritance on loose living and then repented and returned to the Father. Beautifully dove tailed cinematic piece combining the sometimes reckless zeal of Simon Peter with the son resentful of the prodigal child's welcome home in the story.
This scene is set in Matthew the tax collectors house. He invites Jesus to his home where there are prostitutes and they are having a banquet and party. Jesus goes against the will of his followers who think it would disgrace him to meet with such sinners. Jesus uses this event to teach about God's kingdom, He is willing to come where he is welcome
    Two teachings in this parable
Firstly of Gods patience, love and acceptance of his children. God is waiting for his children to repent of their sin and return to Him and follow his ways and attain fellowship with him. If we choose to ignore God and pursue sin then we cut ourself off from the Father. The Father loves us and wants our love and attention and it is best for us when we are with the Father who is the source of all life, comfort and goodness. The things of this world are temporal and fleeting, they are vain and are idols. The source of all life is Gods Spirit.
Secondly is the warning of those who are in Gods kingdom and who believe and follow Him not to be resentful of sinners and of iniquity when they repent and are also accepted into the kingdom. We have all been sinners and we should all rejoice when anyone repents and comes to God.

I was an atheist for 10 years of my life. Depression, anxiety and panic attacks were a part of my daily routine. I was suicidal during my teenage years and had no friends at school. I started using medication when I was 15 and only stopped at 19. Eventually, my body got sick and I developed some diseases from all the chemicals on it. Now, at 23, my life is completely changed due to how Jesus Christ, my King and my God, transformed me. This parable speaks to me in a way that no other book or human being does, as does Jesus himself. I’m no longer depressed, shy or ill. Everyday is a blessing and I cannot fathom killing myself anymore. All the glory be to Him, who is gentle and humble in heart, and extremely patient with a stupid man like myself.

Peter’s “I’m just a stupid man” line; me every time I sin. That is all of us, but we can always return to our Lord, who gave His life to save us from our sins.
    Thank You, Lord!!!!

Can't always return to God. If any "i/I" commits ultimate evils such as murder, suicide, rape, pedophilia, beastiality, and tried to go to God, such ones will be casted away or erased. Renounce God and be renounced. View thyself as God based upon misconstruing and misinterpreting and discover just how much isn't God.

This is my favorite parable. He is essentially saying that God's love is beyond justice. His love is one of grace. He doesn't diminish justice in any way; he exemplifies it by telling us to forgive people and help them to get to heaven which is TRUE justice because we were created for heaven and eternal life.

The paragon of all parables! Luke 15 wrecks me because it teaches that God the Father is reckless in his love. All three parables in Luke 15 illustrate one main point; namely, that there is much rejoicing in heaven when that which belongs to God was lost and became found because of the reckless love of God.

One of the finest pieces of acting on film that I have ever seen. Peter's hesitation and nervous smile in the midst of his shattering grief, coming to grips with the understanding that he was standing before God made flesh, the heartbreaking desire for mercy and restoration to innocence--- just a masterpiece

It was exactly what he needed to hear. He WAS that son who left the Father and was ashamed to come home, and Jesus has told him it's not too late. Peter WAS the older son who thought the younger son was a lost cause and thought the Father was foolish for taking him back. Jesus sets them both straight with the same story, and they reconcile at the end of the scene.

I feel this parable depicts the love of our heavenly father.. No matter how sinful we as sons and daughters are until we realise what have we done wrong when famine can depict betrayal, lost everything you loved and had, selfishness, ego, hatred, violence etc. and try to correct them.. Father will keep his arms open for us and expecting our return from evil... This kind of love is something beyond anything.. This kind of realization so necessary in this current generation right now... Guy you still have got time.. Don't lose faith in the father and be ashamed if father will call you back or not... Understanding what did you gain by doing evil and comparing with what you had before turning to evil is important.. God bless us all..

Most people don’t really get this parable, and the wicked misuse it as a license to continue in sin.
What if the prodigal had come home, but instead of demonstrating true contrition, had demanded more money from his father so that he could go out and spend it on more harlots? Would the ending have been the same?
What if the son had never made the journey (a work of sorts) home, either out of shame or indifference to his father? Would his father have left home to seek him out?
The parable has two sides, the Father’s compassion for a returning reprobate, and the absolute necessity for repentance.

the parable has, in fact, three sides.
      The Father's compassion.
      The Prodigal Son's repentance.
      The Other Son's hard-heartedness.

This scene is perhaps the most brilliant depiction of Jesus ever done in any art form in human history. I was stunned when I first saw it and am still stunned by it now. It takes the parables, which are presented rather dryly in the Gospels and gives them flesh, context, greater meaning and feeling. It suggests that Jesus told these stories to fit particular situations. It gives us a vivid portrait of what it might have been like and why he was so compelling to be with. The other scene that struck me,, among many, was after the early raising of Jairus' daughter. The crowd is stunned and they gather around him in complete stillness, listening. And as he speaks the Divine emanation from him makes them realize that God is not abstract. some ritualistic prayer. It (He) is *here-now* right in front of them, pouring through Jesus. You could feel it watching it.
Jesus of Nazareth was an enormous breakthrough achievement of modernism brought to Jesus life. You could feel it, especially in the political turmoil. The Chosen is a child of this modernism and in its own way is quite remarkable. But I have to say for all of its power, and there are many great scenes, it has never reached this height. Maybe the healing by the pool, which was awesome.
