Ford F150 fan running - FIXED!!!

- My f150 5.0 coolant fans were running non stop on high after I changed water pump and thermostat. Endless attempts at fixing other things, what fixed it was installing a stock thermostat. What caused the issue to begin with was an aftermarket thermostat.

Just had the same issue last week, after changing my water pump and install a new thermostat on my 2016 f-150 5.0 . The idle was a bit too fast, the fans were on high speed for nothing even in cold days. I saw you video and i went to a ford dealer to buy a Motorcraft thermostat and voilà! It all went back to normal. Thanks a lot!
You posted this video 2 years ago and still helping people like me. I own a 2013 f150 and after a replace the faulty water pump and thermostat last month I notice right away the super laud noise of the fan that was driving me crazy, it literally sounded like I was piloting a Cessna plane. I watched your video last night and I fixed it today, (luckily I still had the original thermostat) now it’s back to normal. Thanks you so much for exposing this problem in ford trucks. I’m sure there will be someone else out there that will also benefit from this Crystal clear explanation, thanks again!!
Wish I was in the same boat. Same year as yours and it just yells with that fan every time I try to use my AC or heater 🤦🤦🤦🤦I just haven't used em in a while. A bit cold but all of the cars in traffic aren't watching me 🤦
Lucky guy. I tossed my original thermostat, so back to the dealer I go.
@@cw9533 you should be able to get a new original thermostat at the Ford dealer.
@K I L L E R JOE Thank you, hopefully that fixes it.
Thank you for posting. I had my ford dealership replaced my pump, hoses and thermostat. Then my 2013 F150 started doing this exact same thing. I questioned them about it and they played dumb. I purchased this truck new from them and never had it act this way, was driving me crazy. I had enough and decided to replace the thermostat myself. Appears they used some aftermarket thermostat rather than the ford motorcraft band. Not happy with that dealership, I thought they were better than this. Truck is back to normal now with OEM thermostat, thank you!!

Thank you so much for your post. Had same issue after getting water pump replaced. After 3 garage's , even a new radiator, I replaced thermostat myself after seeing your post. Two months of running and no load fan noise, runs and sounds great. Can not tell you how grateful for your post I am.

@@ROR2379 I did not have any engine codes or overheating. My fan would run only when my engine was running and it was inconsistent as to when it would run loud. It turns out I did have a coolant leak last winter and 1 garage did replace the water pump, and I am assuming the Thermostat. All I can say is it has not done it since I put the OEM Thermostat in.
Thanks for this post I had the same issue. I had replaced the coolant and thermostat in my 2018 5.0 F-150. I live in Florida so run the A/C most of the year. The dealer did not have an OEM thermostst in stock. I ordered one but became inpatiant after a few days so went up to Autozone and got and aftermarket one. My wife and I both noticed the fans were running full blast after I changed the themostat and coolant. After reading your fix I drained the radiator and replaced the themostat with the OEM one that finally came in. Amazingly it solved the problem! I also noticed the truck runs 20 deg F cooler. I am guessing the aftermarket themostat was opening at a higher temp than the OEM. Whatever the fans are definetly running slowewr. Thanks for the information cinci520!!

Thanks for putting up this video. I have the 15 f150, and had exactly the same issue. Right after having the garage replace the water pump and thermostat i had high speed fan issues. I checked and the garage used a aftermarket thermostat and "problem solved " thank you!!

Your video was the first one to come up. I'll be picking up a Thermostat from the dealership on my next days off and hopefully that takes care of it!
If you didn’t change the thermostat prior to this happening, and it’s still the stock one in there, you might have a different issue with possibly coolant level or AC Pressure switch or AC Manifold plugged. But if you’ve recent changed the thermostat then it’s likely your cause. Good luck!

I had the issue of high heat fan setting off- couldn’t figure it out after checking internal gauges on dash, diagnostics reading radiator fluid at 106 Celsius. Gotta call tomorrow and give them an ear full… I’ve been documenting this process for my own channel as well.

@@ROR2379 I’ve now fixed the issue with both at 2013 5.0 and a 2014 3.5 F150s. The 2013 the Fan ran constantly on high and I actually had it replaced before finding out about the Thermostat. The Ford Motorcraft Thermostat fixed the issue in the 2013 5.0 immediately.
The 2014 thankfully I got ahead of it and as soon as I realized the fan was kicking on high when it didn’t need to I had it switched. Sure enough it had been changed before and had an aftermarket brand thermostat in it.
Must be something about the calibration but the Ford Motorcraft Thermostat seems to be the fix. Go with the OEM replacement on this one. Worth the few extra bucks up front in this case.

My 2012 expedition w 5.4l 3v just had the whole timing kit done at the dealer and now about every other morning on cold startup ( outside air about 70 degrees) the fan kicks on about 2 seconds after start and runs for thirty seconds then shuts down. Never did this before and doesn't seem to have any other problem. Dealer is an hour and a half away so its an ordeal to take it back and leave it overnight to let them check it.
Any ideas? Its more of a nuisance thing now but I'm worried it might turn into something more and if too much time gone by the dealer will say too bad, should have brought it right back

Thanks for that video it help me you are right you have to the ford one in the aftermarket one dint work
Great video. After talking to my son about this same problem with his truck, he got a Ford thermostat and it seems that fixed his problem. My issue is with an aftermarket thermostat that is not correct for this truck. What's the difference between the aftermarket unit and the Ford unit? It must have something to do with flow and how wide the thermostat opens. I have read where some models have a temp sensor in the radiator and one in the engine. When the temp of the two do not match, the ECM tells the fan to kick on high perhaps because the flow of coolant is somewhat restricted causing a difference between the two sensors. I assume the Ford thermostat must open wider which allows better flow through the system. If this is true, then the after market thermostats are not compatible and should not be sold as such. Yes, the aftermarket unit may fit, but it seems they don't work. Maybe those who have purchased those aftermarket units should ask for a refund. It might only be $20.00, but if you figure in the time and labor, it kinda stinks that "we the public" are buying parts that are not compatible as advertised.
Same issue here. I put a new thermostat in and the fan started to run constantly. My water pump failed and I replaced it. Same fan problem. Put another thermostat in and to no avail. Going to put an OEM thermostat in next weekend. Will let you know.

Had the same problem today fixed it with a new thermostat from Ford motor company.
I'm just curious why this happens??
Check your freon level before you do anything. Mine was over charged by the previous owner which was causing the fan to come on constantly. Emptied the freon, filled it with fresh freon to the correct level...no more fan problems.
Can it be reason my truck is overheating?

Just changed my water pump and thermostat on my 2013 5.0. Same issue. My fans turned on after 10 minutes of running. At 70 mph no AC on. outside temp was 71. Fans screamed for the whole 6 hour interstate trip. Just purchased the Motorcraft BR3E-8575 from ford dealer. Remember, just because after market parts say "this part is exact fit" does NOT mean it will work. I had this exact same issue with front rotors replacement from a chain store place. It'll fit but does not have same OEM specs. after market rotors are thinner. Cheaper is NOT cheaper.

Did you get engine code or overheating?
I don't have any of this, but my fan run all the time even with the engine off.

This fixed your problem on your fan?
Maybe I just got lucky but I fixed the problem with a couple of quarts of Prestone Antifreeze coolant. I have a 2013 F-150. Start making the roaring fan noise last Summer. Put the coolant in the rezervoir and the noise stopped.
The noise started again last week when it got to be about 90 degrees out. Put a couple of quarts in yesterday and drove about 150 miles with a lot of stops in town. No noise. Give this a try. Maybe you will be lucky too.
Thank you so much for that!
Thanks for this video I will order a Ford OEM thermostat. I did try the AC pressure switch and that did nothing to help. Mine is a 2013 5.0 F 1 50 with 253,000 miles on it believe it or not. It is a weird issue because the truck never seems to start to overheat but I have never changed my water pump. I will try that if the four thermostat doesn’t fix it. Thanks again for the video
I hope it works out! My truck was never overheating either according to the temp gauge. Actually my truck would never warm up to operating temp and the gauge would hover at around 3/8 on the gauge, as if the fans were keeping it from warming up properly.
If you haven’t ever changed your thermostat you might benefit from taking a look at your AC compressor to make sure it’s engaging and disengaging properly and then checking your fan relays. Just to rule those out before spending anything. Good luck!
@@cinci520 thanks Brother 🙏
@@cinci520 I know some people say it’s great and others say not so great but I cut the guts out of my thermostat and now it does not trigger the fan.
Here's an interesting one for ya, mine started doing this every day for a month now, but I haven't touched it. Think I should just go ahead and swap the old stat with a new O.E?
If its still the original stat then it’s likely a different issue. Some other common problems are the ac pressure switch near the battery as well as Freon levels themselves. Check rad fluid also. Good luck!
My 2014 f150 fan keeps going on when the vehicle turned off any advice. I had to take the relay fuse out to turn it off so it would kill my battery.
Hmm that’s odd, I’m not too sure but will just take some guesses. I’d say check the relay itself first, with the vehicle running and the fan is on to remove the relay and then lightly plug it back in and see if you can feel it clicking open and closed. If not clicking and the fan just come back maybe start with replacing that? Or finding a used one?
Another guess would be the clutch on the fan itself may be seized or seizing, I’ve heard if that happens then it somethings still wants to draw power.
These are total shots in the dark my friend but I hope it helps.
Thank you I'll try that thermostat change, like you this is driving me nuts.
I had my thermostat changed and had this same issue. Took it back and had them replace it with a 180 degree thermostat instead of the 200 degree.

Got a question I exchange everything As well my water pump everything thermostat refreshed the coolant. I did put a different thermostat which is from a brand called NAPA for it but ever since I completed the work on it and exchange the hoses no leaks and oil change did complete inspection myself on my truck. Ever since I completed it the fan is just full blast and what you recommend to make it work or best possible solution ?
That is nearly the same as what I went through. I would suggest ordering a new thermostat from your Ford dealership and putting that in instead of the Napa one.
Just let the truck cool down, disconnect the hose on the thermostat housing and catch the coolant in a container. Replace the thermostat and o ring and put the coolant back in. I hope it works for you, and hopefully you can check back in here letting us know. Good luck!

I have gone to Ford dealership and ordered the thermostat this morning. Because before I fixed it, it was running perfectly fine the fan as well it’ll turn on when I ran out of coolant for short period of times and turn off but when everything changed it’s just full blast. Hopefully it’ll do the trick. Also, wanted to say that as I drove in the highway the engine coolant light goes above the middle average half way to almost 3/4 full as I accelerate do you think that could be it or something else I mean it’s no leak everything is changed and as I drive normally on roads it just remains half way.
The first time I changed the thermostat, to the aftermarket one, my gauge did the same thing where it was going to 3/4. After a few days of driving and opening the fluid bottle cap a few times and watching it bubble that stopped. But I had to take the cap off and run it a bit.
After I changed back to the Ford thermostat though, that never happened and it was perfect. Your experience say identical to mine from start to finish, so hopefully the new thermostat will fix your issue like it did for me.

This was less than a month ago, now the fan is one when the ignition is on with or without the AC.
I wish I knew a more specific answer for you, but with what you’re describing there’s a few things you can check suck as the AC Pressure switch mounted on the cooling line near your battery, as well as a possible Freon leak? Also check the relays to make sure they’re functioning properly. Is your AC level getting low after some use?
Is it because the 3rd party t-stats aren’t opening properly or are they labeled the incorrect temperature?
I am not sure but my guess would be the temp opening on them isn’t accurate.
