My 2013 truck just started doing this this last weekend... iThe fans will start running on high right after starting up for the first time in 30F outside temps... Your video was the first one to come up. I'll be picking up a Thermostat from the dealership on my next days off and hopefully that takes care of it!

If you didn’t change the thermostat prior to this happening, and it’s still the stock one in there, you might have a different issue with possibly coolant level or AC Pressure switch or AC Manifold plugged. But if you’ve recent changed the thermostat then it’s likely your cause. Good luck!

You posted this video 2 years ago and still helping people like me. I own a 2013 f150 and after a replace the faulty water pump and thermostat last month I notice right away the super laud noise of the fan that was driving me crazy, it literally sounded like I was piloting a Cessna plane. I watched your video last night and I fixed it today, (luckily I still had the original thermostat) now it’s back to normal. Thanks you so much for exposing this problem in ford trucks. I’m sure there will be someone else out there that will also benefit from this Crystal clear explanation, thanks again!!

Thank you for posting. I had my ford dealership replaced my pump, hoses and thermostat. Then my 2013 F150 started doing this exact same thing. I questioned them about it and they played dumb. I purchased this truck new from them and never had it act this way, was driving me crazy. I had enough and decided to replace the thermostat myself. Appears they used some aftermarket thermostat rather than the ford motorcraft band. Not happy with that dealership, I thought they were better than this. Truck is back to normal now with OEM thermostat, thank you!!

Thanks for this post I had the same issue. I had replaced the coolant and thermostat in my 2018 5.0 F-150. I live in Florida so run the A/C most of the year. The dealer did not have an OEM thermostst in stock. I ordered one but became inpatiant after a few days so went up to Autozone and got and aftermarket one. My wife and I both noticed the fans were running full blast after I changed the themostat and coolant. After reading your fix I drained the radiator and replaced the themostat with the OEM one that finally came in. Amazingly it solved the problem! I also noticed the truck runs 20 deg F cooler. I am guessing the aftermarket themostat was opening at a higher temp than the OEM. Whatever the fans are definetly running slowewr. Thanks for the information cinci520!!

@@ROR2379 I did not have any engine codes or overheating. My fan would run only when my engine was running and it was inconsistent as to when it would run loud. I had the issue of high heat fan setting off- couldn’t figure it out after checking internal gauges on dash, diagnostics reading radiator fluid at 106 Celsius. (Was approx. 12-15 degrees higher than should be) I had just replaced upper hose and y connector. No radiator leaks. This video came in clutch- after watching your video I realized the local tire shop installed after market thermostat. 😮I had a certified mechanic to install Motorcraft(OEM Ford) thermostat. Problem solved.
After thorough testing - all good- no more issues with high heat fan.

....... if you are working the cooling system on a F-150 with the V8 from about 2011 to 2017 or so and you install a new THERMOSTAT be sure to install a new 180 degree F or 187 degree F THERMOSTAT ..... the original Ford factory THERMOSTAT is a 190 degree F THERMOSTAT but if you re-install a new 190 degree F THERMOSTAT in your 2012 or 2013 F-150 with the V8 then the 2 electric radiator fans will run continuously after the engine warms up ...... the electric radiator fans will never cycle off ..... over 200 youtube contributors have observed this now ....... I learned the hard way myself but by watching youtuber's comments I learned how to fix the problem ...... I had installed a brand new 190 degree F THERMOSTAT and sure enough my fans ran all the time ...... I searched youtube and found the answer ..... I hope this makes things easier for my fellow do it yourself guys ..... posted by Jent.

Great video. After talking to my son about this same problem with his truck, he got a Ford thermostat and it seems that fixed his problem. My issue is with an aftermarket thermostat that is not correct for this truck. What's the difference between the aftermarket unit and the Ford unit? It must have something to do with flow and how wide the thermostat opens. I have read where some models have a temp sensor in the radiator and one in the engine. When the temp of the two do not match, the ECM tells the fan to kick on high perhaps because the flow of coolant is somewhat restricted causing a difference between the two sensors. I assume the Ford thermostat must open wider which allows better flow through the system. If this is true, then the after market thermostats are not compatible and should not be sold as such. Yes, the aftermarket unit may fit, but it seems they don't work. Maybe those who have purchased those aftermarket units should ask for a refund. It might only be $20.00, but if you figure in the time and labor, it kinda stinks that "we the public" are buying parts that are not compatible as advertised.

Not being able to physically grab the cooling lines I would say is normal, especially after warm up when the fluid is only 20 degrees cooler than boiling point.
When your fan comes on, turn off your heat/ac completely. After a few minutes the rad fan should turn off or if it’s on high then at least go down to a lower speed. If that happens then I would say it’s working as it should. Trust your dash gage and if it’s right around half when the fan is on then I would say it is good. your fan will come on from time to time in order to maintain that halfway temp on the gage. It may also be a case where you have to give it a few days of driving because your cooling system needs to work out the air bubbles. I’m told the coolant system is self priming but not sure how true that is. You can also unscrew the cap a few times after it’s been running to let out excess air bubbles. Hopefully that works for you. The fan will still come on from time to time as it should, as long as it’s not running on high continuously. Good luck man I hope that helps.

Hey Michael, do you know if the thermostat you replaced it with is the motor craft? I am not sure either why it causes it. But if you changed it out with the motor craft thermostat then there are other things you can look at such as the ac pressure switch, the ac manifold block and the ac compressor. But if it just started doing it after changing out the thermostat and y pipe then that’s probably where I’d be looking. It might also take a bit for your system to bleed out any air if you have replaced coolant or added it.

@@ROR2379 I’ve now fixed the issue with both at 2013 5.0 and a 2014 3.5 F150s. The 2013 the Fan ran constantly on high and I actually had it replaced before finding out about the Thermostat. The Ford Motorcraft Thermostat fixed the issue in the 2013 5.0 immediately.

Does the fan kick on instantly the second it’s started up until it’s turned off? I’ve heard of the fan clutch being an issue for some. So if the clutch won’t disengage then it’ll always be running. It’s an easy check, if you watch for engagement or disengagement on your fan….also check the ac compressor clutch while you’re looking, and see if they’re functioning normally right at startup before it comes on continuously.

Then I unplugged the AC sensor on high pressure side. Once I pushed the paper pin in sensor connector I can hear the sound of engaging the AC clutch.

Hopefully it’ll do the trick. Also, wanted to say that as I drove in the highway the engine coolant light goes above the middle average half way to almost 3/4 full as I accelerate do you think that could be it or something else I mean it’s no leak everything is changed and as I drive normally on roads it just remains half way.

ALSO , in the past they had replaced that thermostat , again an aftermarket , and my engine light came on , code said "Thermostat" , I had them put a Ford Thermostat in back then , engine light went off .... I HOPE it is just a thermostat to solve this fan problem , but I will say this , it appears to me my 2010 F-150 4.6 wants ONLY a Ford OEM Thermostat ...... and frankly I am somewhat thinking "only Ford Parts" from now on .... Maybe NAPA , but these little "common auto parts stores" we see everywhere (you know the names) , I am having doubts about their parts .. I have used NAPA parts on a repair or two , and they seem to be doing fine ..... I'm only moderately mechanical savvy , so take what I say with a grain of salt ......
