I have never left a youtube comment before. But, I had this exact problem and thought I would give this video a try. I thought it might just be the climate because I am in Las Vegas but I replaced the expansion valve in my 2013 F150 according to this video and my loud truck is now as quiet as ever. I am extremely appreciative for this video and I hope the original poster sees this and knows he did in fact help somebody. The replacement only took about 15 minutes after having the freon excavated professionally. Kind of an awkward place to get to in the truck but not too bad. Again, this video was great.
Hey Benjamin, I’m the original poster and I’m so glad that you took the time to leave a comment. This was a real mystery problem that Ford wasn’t owning up to. There were no videos when my truck had this problem, and it took some head scratching to figure it out. I don’t usually make UA-cam videos, but I was hoping to save someone else eve frustration. I am glad I did. Enjoy your quiet truck!
Fixed my loud fan problem, finally had enough of going through drive-thru’s & the person not being able to hear me & waking up the neighbor’s when turning the truck on at 4:30 in the morning to head to work. Replaced the expansion valve & now have a nice quiet truck. Thank you!
2013 F150 5.0 this did the trick for me at 60,000 now at 125,000 doing it again.. when I took it in for evacuation my mechanic suggested I replace the AC accumulator/dryer.. essentially it’s a filter housed in your AC condenser that filters your freon.. pain in the butt to remove your condenser for the filter change but hopefully worth it to keep the expansion valve from gumming up contaminants.. motorcraft part YF37512.. thanks for the video
Just bought a 2013 F150 Limited. I knew this loud fan noise wasn’t normal! Plus I’ve had to change out the AC resistor twice in less than a few weeks so I’m kind of happy I’ll be flushing the AC lines out n starting fresh. Very good video. Thanks man!
....... if you are working the cooling system on a F-150 with the V8 from about 2011 to 2017 or so and you install a new THERMOSTAT be sure to install a new 180 degree F or 187 degree F THERMOSTAT ..... the original Ford factory THERMOSTAT is a 190 degree F THERMOSTAT but if you re-install a new 190 degree F THERMOSTAT in your 2012 or 2013 F-150 with the V8 then the 2 electric radiator fans will run continuously after the engine warms up ...... the electric radiator fans will never cycle off ..... over 200 youtube contributors have observed this now ....... I learned the hard way myself but by watching youtuber's comments I learned how to fix the problem ...... I had installed a brand new 190 degree F THERMOSTAT and sure enough my fans ran all the time ...... I searched youtube and found the answer ..... I hope this makes things easier for my fellow do it yourself guys ..... posted by Jent.
Was having the same problem and only found your video looking at this fix for the expansion valve! This was the exact fix for my truck! Thank you for posting!
Phil- thank you for the information you have provided. I replaced my AC expansion valve. It fixed my loud fan. It was a little challenging getting the valve to line up with the screw holes, but I eventually got it. Thank you again !
I had experienced this issue and for me it may have been a combination of a loose high/low side caps that leaked all the freon out of the system and the switch that you unplug in the video was giving a 15-20+ psi reading difference compared to a manual gauge on the high side. Replace the sensor switch and tightened the caps and put freon in and they said it was good to go.
Thank you so much for this video! This issue has been driving me crazy and you have helped me find the problem. Thank you and may God bless you and your family
With my 2011 it was the AC system. I bought the truck used and notice the insanely loud high speed fan. Hooked out a manifold gauge set and saw that the low side AC pressure was at about 38-40 lbs psi and would rise. I had some freon removed down to 30 psi and it made all the difference in the world. AC is much cooler now and the fans do not kick in as much. They will cycle now and then.. but definitely turn off, its not that constant ongoing noise. Happy camper
Perfect presentation/tutorial!! Little bit of editing, and this would be professional grade content. More you tubers in general, especially DIYers need to deliver this way. Any dummy should have no problem. The pictures, are somehow more beneficial then video... I'm not even by my truck as I watch and I can picture everything perfectly!! THX, I hope you have or will make more content as you drive your truck and run into issues. Hopefully you have no issues... only in a perfect world
I took my truck to a mechanic that specializes in ac and did the exact fix. Expansion valve was the problem. I didn’t have the tools to properly evacuate the lines. It has been about 9-10 months now and my 2014 5.0 f150 sounds great.
Update and a little more detailed info...After watching this very helpful video and after trying a few other options I was hoping this was my fix. I live in the hot and humid Deep South. The fan would kick on any time the outside temperature would exceed about 83 degrees (which is most every day between April and October). The thing sounded like an airplane landing. I replaced the pressure sensor on the high side ac line, but no luck. Anyway, I don’t have the tools/desire to evacuate the Freon and refill, so I ordered the expansion valve from my local dealer. When I got the expansion valve (and the washers), I took it to the dealership and had them install it. The service manager gave me that “oh you’re one of those guys” look when I walked in with a part and a specific request. He did admit to me that they see this fan issue a lot. He said sometimes a simple ac system evacuation and refill will fix the problem. A few hours later he called me to tell me they evacuated the system and ran a new pressure test and the pressure was still too high, so they replaced the expansion valve (I was tempted to say I told you so) and that fixed it. They charged me for 1.5 hours of labor. Still a relatively cheap fix. I drove the truck to the beach last week with temps in the 90’s all day. Everything works great. When the fan does kick on as designed, it is much quieter and only runs for a few seconds. I asked the service manager if he thought Ford might recall the expansion valve, he said it was highly unlikely since it’s not deemed a safety issue. Thanks again, I love having a quiet truck again.
David Salters What a great response. I can’t say I didn’t chuckle a bit when I read that you took your own part into the dealer. Most mechanics despise it when folks do that. Good for you, and I’m glad it fixed the problem. Too bad Ford only recalls failures that endanger people’s lives.
Make sure you check your coolant level first. I thought I had this problem but after adding the right amount of coolant the noise went away. Hopefully I don't get this issue later on. 👍
So wouldn't it be the cooling fan "running" when it shouldn't and not a "noise" because when the cooling fan runs it is pretty loud but shouldn't run that much if very rarely.
My 2013 F150 5.0 Litre was stuck on high after the engine warmed up. I changed my water pump and thermostat and it started. Took Ford two days to figure it out and it turns out it was a bad thermostat. Yes I did install a new one but it was not the Ford OEM one. After the swap the coolant flew through the system and it was good to go. $180 CAN at the dealership.
Thanks for making this video, my 2017 F150 had the same problem, out of nowhere 2 months ago it started doing this, at around 37k miles. Dealerships will try to tell you it's normal because they think you are confusing it with the normal operation sound when the fans are working hard. So I'd bet most owners will have to solve this issue on their own. Part# still the same btw, which means Ford hasn't even bothered correcting the issue from factory since 2014.
Just wanted to follow up with my progress. It was definitely related to the A/C system. I just bought the truck a couple months ago and hadn't needed the A/C so when.i went to use it o. The first warm day.i got nothing. I took it back to the dealer where I bought it. They said they evacuated it and recharge it. I have had no.ploblems since then so it is definitely A/C related. I didnt have to change the expansion valve or pressure sensor. Thank you for all your help.
Nice!!! Just took mine to the dealer for this same thing. Of course they told me it was normal just as you stated in the video. Found it odd to be normal when I've never recalled this ever happening since purchasing the truck in 2017. Stated out as a noisy fan issue during operation of the A/C while driving (idling at a light for example). Then I began to notice the fan was noisy as soon as I started the truck in the morning after sitting in the garage all night. Thought it odd to be "hot" at first start up. Thank you for this info. I will get the items needed to do the repair.
If the outdoor temperature where you are is quite hot, then it is normal. However, to have it start as soon as you start the vehicle seems problematic.
Hey man, I have the exact same thing with my 2016. I live in Florida and it gets hot, but like you, mine starts doing that as soon as I turn the truck on. Did you replace the valve, and did it fis it?
I have had my 2016 for less than 2 month's and this started happening after I took to a Ford dealership for oil change (not where purchased).. After reading the comments, I'm wondering if the sensor was unplugged when I first bought it. Thanks for posting this "how to" !
ive been trying to figure out the fan problem for a while and there were a bunch of different answers that didnt make sense but this was the solution, thankyou for the help
Great video, thanks for covering this topic. Helped me fix my 2013 F150, same parts but the expansion valve is much easier to remove on the earlier trucks.
Thank you soooo much for making this video. My fan decided last year to constantly run so for 6 months I drove with the sensor unplugged baffled at why. I even changed the engine block thermostat trying to find the solution. Once I watched your video I knew exactly what the problem was and it was an easy fix! Thanks again!
Thank you for the video. I struggled getting the expansion valve, so I took it out an cleaned it with brake cleaner and a q-tip. No longer issues with the fan. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
Did you reuse the washers he mentioned in the video? Mines doing the same thing. Going to try the easy fixes first - check coolant & check refrigerant.
@Weekend Home Projects , my noise did eventually return. The fix was the thermostat. Pulled the old one, which was from O'Reilly's and replaced with OEM from Ford. Never a problem again.
2016 F150 same loud fan and the A/C was kicking out because of it. Changed this expansion valve and it is back to normal. My 14yo and I did it without removal of tire but he has small hands and arms. Thank you!
So glad I came across your video...had my ac recharged and all of sudden my fans started sounding like a jet engine and couldn't figure out what was going on...thanks
@@mplemke had truck 10 months and was quite even in the hot weather until I recharged it...just unplugged the wire you showed and it went back to normal....next step is to do the repair you showed... really thanks again for your video..
He did a really good job for somebody who’s not a mechanic I take it that’s not your every day job but you did a good thorough job. My friend has a 2017 expedition and those fans are so loud I can hear him at the end of the street but this gives me something to look at appreciate it
Rom Capprotti I appreciate that brother. I have worked in engines since I was a kid and do as many of my own auto repairs as possible, but I am definitely not a mechanic. Hope this helps solve the problem with your friend’s Expedition or at least puts you on the right track. Thanks again. 👍
Phil Lemke That’s good that you work on your own vehicles at least you don’t have to take them to somebody and pay that ridiculous price. Of course I called Ford about the problem and they said they never heard of it I said well that’s funny it’s all over the Internet
Thanks for posting this, I have been dealing with a loud fan since I bought my truck a year and a half ago (2015 used). It is so obnoxious. It is a bit disheartening to see it's not a super quick fix. But I'll have to do this. Thanks again.
Hi, I followed your instructions on my 2016 F150and it solved my fan problem, Thank you for posting! Going through the wheel well made this much easier, hats off to you!
Hey there! It's been 4 years since I posted this video after pulling my hair out over my own noisy cooling fan issue. I still feel good when I find my trouble shooting helped another truck owner. Good on you for rolling up your sleeves and getting it done!
Good morning Phil, would you happen to know if by replacing the expansion valve help the ac compressor wheeling noise it makes go away while engaged, or is that a different issue. My fan kicks in on high right after that and stays on. 2011 F150.
Thank you for this video. Had the same issue with my 2016 and followed your directions and only took an hr. Using forscan I could see my system was under ~350lbs of pressure so I knew it had to be the expansion valve.
I have a 2015 f150 XL and was having the same issue, unplugged the ac pressure sensor and plugged it back in and it seemed to do the trick. No longer have the problem. Let’s see how long it lasts 👍 thanks for the video
I have a 2018 Platinum with the 3.5EB and have this VERY issue! Just noticed it the last few months. The straw that broke the camel's back, though, was when I was in a store and the clerk (near the middle of the store) mentioned how loud my truck was. Drive-thrus? Yeah, right! Gotta yell just to get my order through. Def saving this vid but my truck is still under warranty so I'll give the dealer a chance to fix it. Thanks for letting us all know we aren't going crazy! haha
I also have the 18 3.5 EB with the same problem. However the fans only go into overdrive when I am stopped. I would be very interested to know if you were able to have the dealer fix it.
I have the same problem with my 2016. 2 months ago my fan started running high all the time ( if the heater control is turned on ) I just unplugged mt sensor and the fans shut off. so nice to hear it quiet again even if only for a few minutes.
Great video. My 2016 F150 V8 had a very loud fan and I changed the pressure switch and thermostat. Neither helped. I took it to the shop and my high pressure freon read 300psi when the truck was off. I had too much air in there and no idea how that happened. They took the air out and added freon and now it sounds very pleasant and easy on the ears lol.
@Phil Lemke it's a very wonderful thing! It was embarrassing and I always felt so bad when I warmed my truck up at 330am lol I am happy that's in the past now. I was dreading the phone call back from the mechanic picturing a $1,500 problem. But it ended up being $247.
Had this issue in my 2013 f150 for about two years. Tolerating it for a while until I changed my ac clutch, water pump, coolant temp sensor, expansion valve, all the o rings at the T/Y hosing and some other things. After changing all these parts the high speed fan still kicks on after driving for a little bit compared to turning on as soon as I crank the truck. I have this truck for four years babying it so I know it’s not “normal” The only thing I didn’t change and arguably returned was the CHT. Cylinder head temp sensor located behind the engine block. That’s my Friday’s assignment.
Hello there great video. I unplugged the sensor on the high line and the fan still continue running on high so this means is not the ac expansion valve right?
I am having the same problem on my 2014 f150, ac fans stay on steady and my ac isnt cold at all! I feel like this could be my issue as well, great video, thnx
rick Thank you. I recommend removing the high pressure sensor first. If the fan goes off, you know your on the right track. If you do need to fix it, give me some feedback and let me know how it worked.
Man, that would have been a good idea. The video was a bit of an afterthought, as I was very frustrated with the problem and I just wanted to get it fixed. It was extremely loud. Thanks for the input. 👍
@@mplemke thanks . there is nothing more frustrating than not knowing , and your video was informative and easy to comprehend. I will be checking you out should i have other questions or concerns with my F150
This is all fine and dandy letting us know what the problem is but has Ford updated the part so it doesn't happen again . From what I've heard ford is installing these valves in all their vehicles and the service rep told me they are changing a lot of them . Basic a 600.00 repair . With a 2 yr warranty . Mine went in 3 yrs . I think Ford should go back to the drawing board on this one or do a recall . Now I really like my ford truck but don't feel very good handing over 600.00 dollars every 3 yrs . Come on Ford get with it . My chev that I still own has never had an issue like this as a matter of fact I've had no issues with that chev . Think I might sell the ford and buy something more dependable .
Hi, I am having the same issue with my 2016 f-150.... so, I came across your video a year ago and I used it to replace my expansion valve, and it worked! ..... However, now a year later, it is doing the same thing!! I was just wondering if you had any advice for me?
Hey, thanks for the video. Fellow Canadian here (Nova Scotia) .. I have a 2014 and mine just started doing this but not only when I turn the AC on but also when the heater is on too. When i shut off the climate control all together it's fine. But when the fan is screaming I unplug the pressure sensor it goes away like you did in the video. So all my symptoms are the same except with the heat on as well.
Jason King That’s interesting. Almost makes me wonder if you have two problems at the same time. I have heard that when the defrost in a modern vehicle is on, the AC also kicks on at a low level to help reduce the condensation on the windows. If that’s true, then you might kill two birds with one stone by replacing the AC expansion valve.
Hi...i have Ford Figo second generation, The problem is that when i turned on the AC the radiator fan runs at high speed , Although AC is working fine and its cooling the cabin ( i just start the engine and turned on the AC and the radiator fan runs high speed) ..... What is the issue? What can be done so that radiator fan should run at low speed at start when the engine is cold...
Had the same problem on my 2013 F150. I tried replacing the AC pressure sensor and thermostat as other videos talked about those being the solutions, but that didn't work on my truck. I had my friend who's a mechanic take a look and he changed out the AC expansion valve and condenser. There was something in the condenser the was making the pressures super high. The AC/defroster has worked fine for now. Thanks for the video!
I had a similar issue with my 2016 Limited. My fans were running on high as soon as turned my truck on. Funny thing was my interior thermometer on the radio was reading a false temp. Exterior temp at the moment was about 98 degrees, but radio was reading 118 degrees. I unhooked the ambient temperature sensor and immediately my fans had turned off. Looked in to the plugs and wiring and noticed there was rust build up and water build up. Cleaned all my connections and blew any water off and bam! Problem solved.
For the fellow 2013 F150 5.0 friends out there. I called the ford dealer about it as I noticed it got louder after I took it in for the transmission recall. I was advised that it was implemented in the fix as well to properly cool the ac unit... and there was nothing that they could do
Jacob Goodnight That’s what I’ve read in some forums but I feel like there’s something that can be done because what other vehicles do you hear out on the road that sound like a helicopter taking off? If it has to work my compressor a little harder so be it. To my understanding it runs off the exterior temperature. My fans will come on high when I’m stoped and once it hits 93°F. I think all 09-14 f150 owners can agree the ac system isn’t great either. I think the vent face design is pretty bad at directing the air compared to other vents that have multiple blades besides just 2 like ours.
Hey Phil, my 2014 f-150 has just started doing the same thing. The first thing I noticed is that my AC is not cooling like it should. My AC has already went out once. So it's not a relay or a coolant temperature sensor?
Thanks for the video Have a 2013 F150 and cooling fans were stuck on high when a/c was on. I was ready to change out my expansion valve as you describe, but decided to change out the pressure switch first since the part is around $30 and you don't need to empty out the lines to change the part. Changing the switch fixed my problem, but without your video I would of been out a lot more $$ taking my truck to a repair shop to troubleshoot. Thanks again.
Eric Hayes That’s great news. Doing the tests before jumping in can save lots of money and time. I’m really glad you didn’t have to take it to a dealer. Congrats on the fix. 👍
I have a 2013 f150 had the same issue my fan motor was super loud especially when I'm paying at the window so what I did was washed my radiator really good several times on both side did notice lots of dirt was in it. And next day I test drove and it worked!!!!
Greg Walters Just be sure to do some testing before swapping parts. If it’s just a pressure sensor, it’ll be a much quicker and cheaper fix. Let me know how it turns out. I’d love to hear.
Phil Lemke I bout a pressure sensor today actually, then happened to come across this video. So I will definitely let you know! I may make a video myself.
Greg Walters That would be awesome...especially if you could get more video shots of the process. I was in a bind between wanting to help others and needing to get done quick so I could get my truck back on the road.
My fan on my 2016 was running on high for long periods after my water pump was replaced, once I started using the AC the problem went away. Not sure why.
My AC seems to blow fine and cool it's just the fan noise that annoys me. Definitely gonna unplug that harness you mentioned first and see if it stops it...
Add me too this list 2017 2.7 litre. around 117000 km. high speed fan runs as soon as truck is started..can get them to stop if i unplug ac pressure switch with truck turned off and then restarted..im just driving around with it unplugged till i get the expansion valve. Thanks for this video Phil :)
Great video! My 2013 is doing this and I suspect it’s the same issue. I understand an a/c system fairly well because I work in a natural gas cryogenic plant in Texas and we utilize liquid propane in a system similar to an a/c system to super cool the gas. The propane system is very similar just much bigger.
I have a ‘16 f150 with the same issue, and everyone indeed tells me the same thing that I should have that checked out, but living in the heat of Texas I’d figure it’s normal? It’s just bothersome that the fan is way too loud!
Hey Phil, is it possible to run the truck with the ac pressure sensor disconnected until I get the expansion valve replaced? Just so the fan isn’t constantly running so loud or would that damage the truck? Thanks
I don’t recommend that at all. If the pop off pressure valve doesn’t blow, you might blow something else up in the system. You want that fluid to stay as cool as it is supposed to be so that nothing blows. Right now there’s a reason that the fan is running all of the time, and that is because the AC coolant is under extreme pressure and very hot.
I recently purchased a used 2016 F-150 and all was well until today. When I turned the truck on the fans immediately started blowing at the highest capacity possible. I thought they would shut off after I started driving but after 45 minutes of driving they were still on full blast. I feel this is very unusual since it’s 35 degrees outside. The fans only stopped once I disconnected the temperature valve on the high pressure line. This is the only video I’ve been able to find that seems to highlight my problem. I’m wondering if this fix will also work for me or could it be something else. (Tried replacing the temperature valve and reconnected it to high pressure line but fans continued after the replacement)
Thank you for your video. My 2016 has the same fan issue with the fans running from startup and on the highway, even in cold weather. I have noticed that the fans will shut off if my air system (defrost/ac etc) is turned off. Moments after turning the air system on the fans turn back on. Did you ever notice turning the air system affected the fans?
It sounds like it could be the same issue. If your air is turned off, the AC compressor would not kick in and would not over pressurize the system. The expansion valve controls the pressure in your line, so if it's bad, the fan is going to go nuts trying to cool the line and lower the pressure.
Mine does the same originally, I bought the truck in January, March comes around and I needed to use the ac, my problem was that the fans came on and in addition, I didn’t have cold ac. So After some research i stumbled on this. So I took my truck in and had the expansion valve replaced, now I have cold AC but the fans are still stuck in high. The mechanic says it’s normal but it’s definitely not.
That was helpful.....2019 F150 XLT 25K already replace a tranny with a 2022 one, did the Phase recall and now the fans are running lke crazy...Dealer cannot find the issue......Phil now i have more ammunition to talk to them about this crap. THANK YOU for the info......shiny side up!
I had an issue with hi fan running hi all time and hi temp while idle. This is normally indication of fan 1 not working. In my case it was a bad plug on Fan 1 motor side.
Hi Phil, my 2013 F150 is doing this. I also live in BC (Vancouver) and took it to my local dealership to get this diagnosed. Ford told me the AC pressure is high and that the fix is an entirely new AC system: compressor, condenser, and the expansion valve, $2,700!!. I think I’m going to ask them to replace only the expansion valve. Has your fix continued to solve your issue?
Rob Barnett Hey Rob, my truck is continue to run perfectly since the fix. I would take your truck to a private shop as I don’t trust dealers at all. They are likely to still insist that you need to do it all. It’s insane that they would tell you to replace the whole system. There’s only a few things that could do this and it it’s not the entire system. There’s a pressure release valve on your compressor that will temporarily blow off pressure if it gets too high, so it’s highly unlikely your compressor is out unless it was completely unrelated.
@@heyjvmp Hi Phil, I took it to my favourite shop (not a delaer) and then just replaced the pressure release valve, so yes, I did not need to replace the entire system. So, thanks for your help!
Was your cooling affected? I just purchased a 2013 and I’m suspecting my TXv isn’t working properly from the readings on my gauges and how they reacted to adding Freon, it gets down to 47 degrees vent temp and 25 psi on the suction line and I’m assuming the evaporators frost sensor is shutting the compressor off and the temperature rises 4 or 5 degrees before turning back on, in these 100 degree days it takes a very long time to even cool the black on black truck down to fairly comfortable
you are god sent! this is a great video and you saved so many people from getting greased at the dealer Your video was great and informative. I like that you didnt go on and on!!!! please continue to make more videos!!! when you first said you were from BC i was like wait a minute, end of the video made sense lol thanks again brother
Dominic Rajaratnam Wow...I’m honoured! I’m glad it helped some folks. I certainly was relieved to solve this problem in my own truck. I dread going to the dealers. And yes, I lived the first 21 years of my life in the USA, and have lived in B.C. since I met my wife. Cheers! :- )
My fans are on high 80 % of the time or more my ac works but just found out my heater doesn't work I keep reading comments so the expansion valve or high pressure sensor is the fix?
Did your ac work at all? I have what i think is the exact same problem. Its a 2016 f150. At some point the ac system gets blocked high side pressure goes crazy high compressor shuts and fans come on like a jet. But i can let a tad bit of pressure out of the highside line and the fans go off and ac starts working. Just wondering if the expansion valve flakes out and causes pressure so high it wont go away. This is the only video i can find that has the same problem as mine, great video Im going to order an expansion valve and change it and see what happens
Derek Jamison Hi Derek. Yes, that’s the exact description of what happens when the expansion valve needs replaced. My AC worked for a while until the pressure got so high that the release valve on my compressor blew off a bunch of pressure. Glad the video is helping. My frustration at the time was that my truck was so new that nobody had put out a video for this problem yet and Ford was denying or misdiagnosing it. I’m no UA-cam guru, but I had to put something out there to help out.
Phil Lemke thanks for the reply. I ordered the expansion valve today so I will wait for it to come in and get it on. Again thanks for the reply and the good video!
Does this only happen when using the AC? My 2017 sounds like it’s revving high (but no increase in RPM’s). It’s winter now. And I haven’t used the AC in months
Hey boss man, I know it’s completely different since I own a dodge, but do you think we have the same issue? My fan really really Cranks loud when I rev the truck up or when I’m in high rpms and it’s a screaming sound of the fan, a lot of people say my clutch fan is bad?
Hi Dylan, I don't know that what you are facing has anything to do with your AC. It may be that your friends are correct. I wish I could help you more. You could try some of the tests I recommend in the video, but again, I really don't think that is what is wrong with your truck. I hope you find the problem and fix it cheap.
Mine only kick on when I turn the ac on. If I turn the ac off then the fans eventually turn off. But it's super annoying that they kick on every time I turn the ac on.
Looks like a big pain in the ass. My truck is only loud when the a/c fan is on. Once I turn off my ac a few seconds later the loud fan noise stops. I'm thinking this might be a "normal" thing. I haven't had my Truck in such hot weather as we've had recently so I wasn't sure if I should worry or not. I have a Ford F 150 and haven't noticed it until today but thanks for the information.
I have that problem with my 2017 expedition. I know both models share the same platform. So they should be located in the same location? I guess theres one way to find out? Any suggestion?
Replace the thermostat the pressure sensor, Check the air conditioning system (lines) and recharged it. Fans are operating fine now no ( loud high sound from the fan)

Fixed my loud fan problem, finally had enough of going through drive-thru’s & the person not being able to hear me & waking up the neighbor’s when turning the truck on at 4:30 in the morning to head to work. Replaced the expansion valve & now have a nice quiet truck. Thank you!
Awesome!
Hey Jent, that’s some helpful info. Thanks for sharing some more insights!
Read this about a thermostat problem Autumn
Was having the same problem and only found your video looking at this fix for the expansion valve! This was the exact fix for my truck! Thank you for posting!
That’s great! Thanks for the feedback. 👍
Phil- thank you for the information you have provided. I replaced my AC expansion valve. It fixed my loud fan. It was a little challenging getting the valve to line up with the screw holes, but I eventually got it. Thank you again !
That’s great news! It’s a relief to have the massive noise gone isn’t it? Thanks for the feedback.
My 2014 has been doing this for a while. I knew something wasn’t right. Thanks for the video!
Glad it helped! God bless you and yours as well.
Was your ax not working as well
With my 2011 it was the AC system.
Super helpful! Thank you very much. The torque specs came in very handy. I would've cranked on them.
Thank you. I’m really glad it helped. 👍
Hopefully you have no issues... only in a perfect world
Thanks much!
I took my truck to a mechanic that specializes in ac and did the exact fix. Expansion valve was the problem. I didn’t have the tools to properly evacuate the lines. It has been about 9-10 months now and my 2014 5.0 f150 sounds great.
Jonah G That’s great. I’m glad they diagnosed it properly. It’s a real relief when that high fan noise goes away.
How much did it cost?
@@DesignLead it’s been a while but I believe it was around $300 cdn.
We are still driving this truck and the fan issues have never came back.
Absolutely…always keep up with your fluids. Good call. 👍
Pretty sure I have this same problem. Did the loud fan noise comeback after the coolant fill?
So wouldn't it be the cooling fan "running" when it shouldn't and not a "noise" because when the cooling fan runs it is pretty loud but shouldn't run that much if very rarely.
My fan run loud at times during summer and then cool off but very loud at times (tractor trailer) 😂2016 Expedition
I'm very glad it worked for you. Thanks for the feedback.
How’d you fix the issue?
@@shonegotti1229 lol didn't know he said that it did
Just wanted to follow up with my progress.
Glad I found your video. Having the same issue and will be tackling it tomorrow when I get off work. Trucks doing the exact same thing.
Hope it solves your truck issue.
My pleasure. Glad you got it fixed. :-)
Great video, thanks for covering this topic. Helped me fix my 2013 F150, same parts but the expansion valve is much easier to remove on the earlier trucks.
Glad it helped. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for the great feedback. Glad you got it fixed. 👍
When you unpluged the sensor did the fan stopped running? My still run after unpluging it.
Mine worked like it should years until the water pump had to be replaced, then it started running much more at the lower outside temperature.
What was the solution that fixed the issue
Thank you for the video. I struggled getting the expansion valve, so I took it out an cleaned it with brake cleaner and a q-tip. No longer issues with the fan. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
Excellent feedback. I didn’t try to repair mine, but I’m glad that worked. 👍
@@weekendhomeprojects, sorry. Didn't answer your question. I put on new washers.
2016 F150 same loud fan and the A/C was kicking out because of it. Changed this expansion valve and it is back to normal. My 14yo and I did it without removal of tire but he has small hands and arms. Thank you!
That's great news and awesome that your son jumped in on the project! Thanks for the feedback :-)
Thanks for this. My fan sometimes runs in -30 in Manitoba. Will do this fix in the spring. 👍
I have the same issue and I'm in Manitoba as well.
So glad I came across your video...had my ac recharged and all of sudden my fans started sounding like a jet engine and couldn't figure out what was going on...thanks
Just a side note, if it’s really hot out, the fan is supposed to kick in and will be loud. My fan stayed on in hot and cold weather.
Rom Capprotti And there you have it. I love Ford trucks, but I have no use for Ford dealers or service. What’s a guy to do, but fix them himself. 👍
Phil Lemke I don’t care to go to dealers only for parts this should’ve actually been a recall though
Thanks for posting this, I have been dealing with a loud fan since I bought my truck a year and a half ago (2015 used). It is so obnoxious. It is a bit disheartening to see it's not a super quick fix. But I'll have to do this. Thanks again.
Jump on in. It’s quicker than you think. I hope it works for you. Be sure to run the test on the AC pressure sensor first.
Thanks. Fixed the problem. Life saver.
Great to hear!
Watched your video and it was dead on for my 2016 lariat. Changed the expansion valve today and now my truck is running quite. Thanks for your video.
Great feedback…thank you 👍👍
It worked! Thank you! Bought the valve for $90 bucs.. Worth every penny.
I’m thrilled to hear that! The relief that you get when that loud blowing noise quiets down is substantial. Enjoy! :-)
Right arm man thanks my 2017 started doing this about a month ago and luckily it’s still covered under warranty booked in for next Monday
What did they do to make it stop staying on.
Thanks for this! I had same problem but switch my ac pressure sensor as well and fixed both problems my loud fans and ac!
That’s great feedback. Thanks 😊
Thanks for the great feedback. Glad you got it sorted out easily 👍👍
I just downloaded foreskan how do I use it to check
I have a 2015 f150 XL and was having the same issue, unplugged the ac pressure sensor and plugged it back in and it seemed to do the trick. No longer have the problem. Let’s see how long it lasts 👍 thanks for the video
thanks man i was looking exatly for this
kaiser2747 Hope it works for you.
This was super helpful..thank you..
Did the dealer fix it and what was the problem
I have the same problem with my 2016. 2 months ago my fan started running high all the time ( if the heater control is turned on ) I just unplugged mt sensor and the fans shut off. so nice to hear it quiet again even if only for a few minutes.
Great video. My 2016 F150 V8 had a very loud fan and I changed the pressure switch and thermostat. Neither helped. I took it to the shop and my high pressure freon read 300psi when the truck was off. I had too much air in there and no idea how that happened. They took the air out and added freon and now it sounds very pleasant and easy on the ears lol.
It definitely pays to check all the basics first. Glad you finally got it figured out. It is a wonderful thing when that noise goes away :-)
I have this truck for four years babying it so I know it’s not “normal”
The only thing I didn’t change and arguably returned was the CHT. Cylinder head temp sensor located behind the engine block. That’s my Friday’s assignment.
Have you done the cylinder temp sensor yet?
Hello there great video. I unplugged the sensor on the high line and the fan still continue running on high so this means is not the ac expansion valve right?
This fixed my 2013 ecoboost. Thank you for sharing.
David Salters That’s great! Thanks for the feedback.
My 2014 f150 5.0 cid just started having the fan problem. Thanks for the info.
@@mplemkethnx phil, will be looking into it today, ill be sure to let you know.
Thnx again
I wish you would have filmed your noise but was still very informative thanks for your time and video
@@robertmccmick1296 I certainly understand. All I can say is that my Motorcraft replacement is still going strong...knock on wood.
Thank you for such explanation, it’s clear thank you ✌🏼
Hi, I am having the same issue with my 2016 f-150.... so, I came across your video a year ago and I used it to replace my expansion valve, and it worked! ..... However, now a year later, it is doing the same thing!! I was just wondering if you had any advice for me?
Phil, thank you for taking the time to make this video. Very well done. This fixed my problem.
So glad to hear that! Thanks for the feedback. 👍
Thank you for Doing video on this. I appreciate it very much. I’m doing this tomorrow. Have a blessed day.
Hope it works for you.
@@mplemke it worked 👊🏻🇺🇸
Great video we got the same problem now I can fix it
Hey, thanks for the video.
Hi...i have Ford Figo second generation,
The problem is that when i turned on the AC the radiator fan runs at high speed , Although AC is working fine and its cooling the cabin ( i just start the engine and turned on the AC and the radiator fan runs high speed) .....
Thank you sir i much appreciated the well thought video ❤
Thanks brother. Very helpful video.
Joshua Bustamante Wow, I didn’t even know the internal thermometer effected anything under the hood. Great work. 👍
Thank you making this video! I think this is exactly the problem I’m having in my 2013.
Matthew Scarbro Glad to help. It’s an easy and inexpensive fix :-)
I have a 2013 5.0 did this solve your problem?! The fans are driving me nuts!
So Fat Yes! Worked like a charm
Sammy Hendrix The part I replaced was the expansion valve.
I take it you replaced the high pressure switch & not the low?
TSC357 There’s only one pressure sensor.
Same here fan on high as soon as I start truck. I’m trying pressure switch first.
Thanks for the vid
I have a 2013 f150 had the same issue my fan motor was super loud especially when I'm paying at the window so what I did was washed my radiator really good several times on both side did notice lots of dirt was in it. And next day I test drove and it worked!!!!
How did you go about washing the radiator
I appreciate this! I have a 2012 5.0 it’s doing the same thing
GOOD video, real good, thank you!
I appreciate the positive feedback.
The part number is missing for the high & low pressure line washers in the description; anyone wouldnt happen to know what they are?
My fan on my 2016 was running on high for long periods after my water pump was replaced, once I started using the AC the problem went away. Not sure why.
3 months later now, how's the fix holding up?
David Still running great. The fix was a score :-)
Thanks brother, I hope this solves the problem. Mine is still working great over one year later :-)
I have 2013 Ford F150 and I have the same problem, i hope this works
Mine come on when I have the ac on and it’s over 94 degrees outside and the stay on but once the outside temp goes under 94 they stop?
Daniel Ayala 94 is pretty hot. It’s pretty normal for the fan to run more in those temps.
I have a ‘16 f150 with the same issue, and everyone indeed tells me the same thing that I should have that checked out, but living in the heat of Texas I’d figure it’s normal? It’s just bothersome that the fan is way too loud!
Great video and info. Thanks
Thank you :-)
man you nailed it Thank you🤙
That's great to hear! I appreciate the feedback.
Shone Gotti Sounds like it could be your expansion valve if you already replaced the high pressure sensor. It’s a common problem.
I have a 2016 and mine is doing the exact same thing as you stated Nighter. Did you end up finding the fix?
Mine does the same originally, I bought the truck in January, March comes around and I needed to use the ac, my problem was that the fans came on and in addition, I didn’t have cold ac. So After some research i stumbled on this. So I took my truck in and had the expansion valve replaced, now I have cold AC but the fans are still stuck in high. The mechanic says it’s normal but it’s definitely not.
That solved my problem thank you 😊
Thanks for the feedback. That’s great to hear!
Well done, thank you
Leslie Brown Thank you.
Lol…hope it puts you on the right track. Seems like dealers just like replace everything and present the bill. Let’s make them honest. :-)
I had an issue with hi fan running hi all time and hi temp while idle. This is normally indication of fan 1 not working. In my case it was a bad plug on Fan 1 motor side.
What size tires are you running on the truck?
How did things turn out Rob?
Rusty Thornton Yes, the cooling was absolutely affected for a long time and then finally quit working altogether when the pressure became to great.
Same issues, thx sir! 🤙
you are god sent! this is a great video and you saved so many people from getting greased at the dealer
Your video was great and informative. I like that you didnt go on and on!!!! please continue to make more videos!!!
when you first said you were from BC i was like wait a minute, end of the video made sense lol
thanks again brother
Dominic Rajaratnam Wow...I’m honoured! I’m glad it helped some folks. I certainly was relieved to solve this problem in my own truck. I dread going to the dealers. And yes, I lived the first 21 years of my life in the USA, and have lived in B.C. since I met my wife. Cheers! :- )
My fans are on high 80 % of the time or more my ac works but just found out my heater doesn't work I keep reading comments so the expansion valve or high pressure sensor is the fix?
It might be your blend door actuator. Mine was stuck on high heat and the cooling fan issue started at the same time.
It’s been a few years and I no longer have that truck, but I believe the cooling fan under the hood was running non stop and even in cool weather.
My 2016 is coming on for 15 seconds then off for 45 second sycles as long as the AC is on. Not sure if this is the same issue but thanks for the video
It depends on the temperature where your at.
mine keeps running after the vehicle is turned off and runs until the battery dies
That’s definitely not normal, but sounds like it may be a different problem.
Thanks. That's exactly what it is.
Leon DiGeronimo Thanks for the feedback!
@@mplemke it was my fan clutch. It completely changed my truck!! Thsnk you tho
Sounds like it’s functioning properly to me.
I have that problem with my 2017 expedition. I know both models share the same platform. So they should be located in the same location? I guess theres one way to find out? Any suggestion?
I’m guessing they are the same. Just go for it and have fun!
Replace the thermostat the pressure sensor, Check the air conditioning system (lines) and recharged it. Fans are operating fine now no ( loud high sound from the fan)
