I think it would help people get into the hobby if they don't think Moxi is the only quality skate that exists. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Moxi is bad quality, but they are incredibly expensive for what you get. They just know how to market really really well and you can get just as good of a skate for a lower cost.
Agreed. I love my Sure Grip Boardwalks and am so glad I did my own research. I've seen too many opinions out there putting down other great brands in favor of Moxi based solely on hype & trend. They are good skates, but they aren't the only ones by far. Plus, I got my Boardwalks within two weeks of ordering.
I bought my Jackson vista vipers with the alloy plate and atom pulse wheels for around $300 and I used afterpay. It’s an amazing skate and I didn’t have to change anything on them because they come with all great quality parts. I got a helmet from Walmart for $20, and used protective gear from Poshmark.
That’s a great deal. My first derby skates were suregrips, spent more on steel plates, trucks and atom low boys. I did enjoy customising them out over time, but it was an expensive endeavour.
There's a special hell for price gougers. That being said, I pre-ordered my custom Lollys in Apr 2020 and used Afterpay since I knew it'd be a while before I got them. Finally got them at the end of August 2020 and they were everything I wanted and more.
I had no choice but to buy seriously over priced used skates because I waited MONTHS for something to be released during this high demand. It really financially sucked, but there were also a lot of positives that came out of that sacrifice. When I received my overpriced Moxies, I automatically felt obligated to use them. This was not a hobby to drop like it’s hot bc I was determined to get my monies worth. I also felt less pressure to keep my skates in perfect condition so I could skate however I felt like since this was my first pair of skates. I feel like I improved quicker because I wasn’t in my head as much. I didn’t feel comfortable yet at a roller rink bc I couldn’t even stand up without falling, and with the pandemic I didn’t feel comfortable skating like a noob around so many people. Now, I take my skates everywhere and feel good skating indoors or outdoors. I still feel like I’m working towards getting my monies worth with these skates and that’s part of what keeps me skating on the days I wanna take a break. I’m not encouraging anyone to buy overpriced stuff (that would be stupid). I just want to show that everyone’s skate journey is different and sometimes you gotta turn those lemons into lemonade ☺️❤️
Many new skaters fall into the trap of thinking that having the best skates will immediately make them great skaters. I'm not saying start super cheap, but $100-200 is more than enough to get you started. Skating is fun, but hard. Building skill safely should be the primary goal, not aesthetics.
Indy, you are amazing and I can’t thank you enough for the daily inspiration you give me to skate and keep skating. I think it’s really improved my mental health. When I first started looking for a good pair of cheap skates, I found a pair of green/black Riedell skates on marketplace for 35$, bought some Atom Pulse wheels, and Bones bearings and threw those bad boys on and they are killer!
I got an older pair of " roller derby" skates (ebay 25$) to start with, I've replaced the bushings, wheels, and bearings and they're much better. They are some fairly solid boot skates and fit well. I'm learning now but sometime I will get a better pair (or two), right know I'm also educating myself on what is a great pair of skates. Thanks for all your videos, they are so important for newbies to learn what is what in skating.
I bought a pair of semi expensive roller derby skates. Because I knew I'd be doing this sport a good while. With the intention that the boot would remain good enough to switch a better plate once I felt ready for it, which I did, after I actually broke both nylon plates. For the freshies I always recommend to start with a decent basic skate, and skate around on those for a good while. Because from the start you really don't know what skate style you'll like. And then start investing in better parts or an entire new skate. As for protective gear, with roller derby, DO NOT cheap out on the knee pads .. sure you can start on some cheap ones when learning how to skate, but once you actually start to play derby, please get some high quality knee pads! You only have one pair of knees ;)
When I tell people how much me and my daughter spend on our skates. Their jaw hits the floor. And we have a different pair for each discipline. We skate in Edea and Roll Line only. We spend approximately $900 for each set up. We do this every 2 seasons but some of our teammates buy a new boot every season. Just a boot is $200 to $800. This doesn't include our lessons, competition fees, uniforms and other expenses. It's a very expensive sport.
I feel like an idiot but I also feel there's no dumb question. So, I am curious are you talking that you and your daughter do roller derby? Lessons and uniforms have got me so confused. I appreciate the clarification.
@@jadefrancescaepperson3124 I know I commented back but I guess it was deleted. Not I am talking about Roller Figure Skating. If you want to see exactly what I am talking about you can search Google. It's like Ice Skating on 4 wheels.

@@jadefrancescaepperson3124 If she is a figure skater and belongs to an artistic club you wear a uniform for practices that shows you belong to that club/team. Good equipment adds up. I had to go custom for my boots which set me back $1200 (and I skate roller and ice so 2x that) then my plates were $600 and a good set of wheels is about $120 but I mix 3 different durometers and swap out often based on floor conditions. But it takes a while to build up to that level of spending and some of it is probably unnecessary for my skill level. But the potential for spending $$$ is there. The nice thing about roller is that the plates last much longer than a pair of ice blades and they don't need sharpening.
I bought skates from the brand Rookie for £60, in my non-professional and beginner opinion, they're good skates so I'd suggest checking them out if you're on a really low budget
I just dropped $800 on Antik Ar2 boots with Atom Pilot Falcon plates, new bearings, wheels and let me tell you, compared to my $200 Bont Prostar set that I started on, the comfort difference is night and day. The Ar2 boots are like putting on a glove, they just feel so good. It immediately leveled up my skating. I can just innately do things on these that I wasn't at all able to do previously.
Business, or the free market, “supply and demand”, is supposed to include an informed consumer. Sure you could ask for $1000 for a pair of Moxi skates, but no consumer should be willing to pay it. That’s what I don’t think consumers understand. We actually have a lot to do with how prices are set based on what we’re willing to pay for things. Unfortunately there are people stupid enough to pay ridiculous prices for items just to out bid someone, or just to get something faster. That’s idiocy. And it hurts the entire process.
Its not only the high demand, but also because of covid and the fact that many of the materials used are made overseas, its very difficult for the major skate companies to keep up with demand. Many of them are having major supply chain issues...
Great video! It is very hard for a beginner to understand why "real skates" are so expensive. There are so many "posers" out there! I was lucky enough to get a pair of Moxi Lolly's from someone i met at the skating rink. She had literally only worn them 2 or 3 times and she sold them to me for $300!!! I also did what you suggested in this video and got a old pair of derby skates online and put all new components on them; which probably ended up costing $400 when all was said and done. But i love them...they're super cool vintage derby skates.
Secondhand for the win! I'm just getting started and found used Rio Rollers for $30, and intend to use them mainly for outdoor, but now in the beginning with different wheels also indoor. I'm starting my roller derby fresh meat training in a month, and decided I'd wait until I've gotten to try more skates on from others before I order good new derby skates, as we do not really have local shops for trying and fitting in person and I don't want to risk putting $300+ into something I'll totally wreck in the first weeks or that doesn't really fit well.
Actually,... one of my skateboard completes costed $250 and the other one that I got a few years ago was $280 for a cruiser complete board & custom setup.
To buy skates is SO expensive in NZ. I have brought impalas. I street skate and park skate and I've had a great time. But yeah... Even impalas still cost 200 bucks to get here. I told myself if I wear them till they break or become unwearable, I was going to treat myself to a moxie skate even if that ends up costing me near to a bijillion dollars lol.
I cant find anything for my f*cked up ballet feet! Half sizes are not made and I simply do not understand why skate sizing makes no sense. Forget the charts. You can study charts all day long and each brand will have a different sizing system. Its much better to get fitted but many people have to order online then resell the skates because the store wont accept returns after a few wears. Womens skates should not be in Mens sizes. It just adds to confusion. Also they should carry half sizes and widths in narrow, medium, and wide. Most shoes are sold this way, why not skates?
I wish companies would put more love into vegan boots. For example moxi's vegan jack, they should try and branch out with those. Add new colors etc. The focus is so much on leather boots. Not sustainable really.

Hi Indy! Can you make a review on the cheap roller skates on Amazon. It would be very helpful for me and maybe even others that are beginning roller skating.
Agree! Some don't look that bad online on Amazon and also I think if you're trying a hobby/sport out you want to see if you will like it, and if I gets worn out quick I'm fine with that because I know I'll want to invest more to keep going, that all said, I get why people say to go on and get the best skates and I get you'll enjoy and I think might like skating better but I think the Candi Girl and Impala skates analogy is a great idea. I have a friend who got a pair of the Xudrez roller skates online from Amazon and she liked the lighter nylon plate rather then the aluminum and was really happy with them, last thing, I have to say I do agree with Indy that you will likely save money later on if you buy the better roller skate options and again that's if you keep with skating, I also think that I won't be shredding bowls or doing extreme fast outdoor skating anytime soon so I've been pretty happy with my cheaper C7 skates so far. Still curious about the options on Amazon and I could never find the Candi Girl Carlin roller skates in my size but I would like them or the moxi rainbow Riders to be my next skates.
@@jadefrancescaepperson3124 I feel like whenever I started getting interested in something for a new hobby and googling what I need to get started they ALWAYS told you to buy the best expensive pro stuff even though you're literally just starting. But like you said, since I just started and I still don't know if I'd actually like it and want to continue or not, I feel like it's too much to immediately buy the pro stuffs even though if you DO continue it for a long time it'd be better option monetary wise. I recently decided and finally bought an impala pair as it's the best affordable one I can find here (my country's monetary value is low and as I don't even live in the capital city, my wage is generally half that of the people living there). I won't be doing anything extreme too especially since there isn't even many smooth surface here for me to play on, much less a rink (there's actually a place but very far and exclusive).
Price gouging indicates that the seller values money over that item going to someone in the community who wants it and will put it to good use. I'm not saying it's good or bad, but their actions show where their priorities are.
I personally think a 10% to 15% markup isn't bad at all in order to get something now instead of wait, but in my opinion if someone is able to find a buyer who is willing and able to pay WAY over retail price (25%+ markup) to immediately obtain a luxury item (which is what skates are, they are NOT necessities) instead of waiting, then that's fine. If it's not in your budget (like myself), then don't let instant gratification get the best of you and cause to to break bank or go into debt. Simply wait (which is what I did), no need to be bitter that someone else can afford it or is making money off of it. I'm thankful that the skate companies aren't upping the price themselves, leaving us with NO options for skates. I think it would be neat if there was someone out there who took beginner skates, modified them to make them better and then sold them for profit. I would have gladly paid more money to get some Rainbow Riders that had ACTUAL outdoor wheels (not that 82A "hybrid" BS) and quality bearings.
Is there any way to stretch the Moxie leather? I bought my skates and absolutely love them and I had a injury to a bone in my foot and ever since then I need to wear a bigger size or I have nerve pain in my foot. I’m wondering if there’s a way just to stretch the toolbox out a little bit. Anyone know?
I got my skates for $200 (expensive brand anyhow) but i keep seeing people selling their used skates online for $150 and i find this ridiculous, when the same one brand new is only maybe 10 or 20 bucks more in the store/online
Where to go to purchase my 1st pair and where to begin street skating? I am 50 year old man, overweight and looking for something fun and healthy, also never skated and don't know anyone that does roller skating
Mass production will leave you confused. I checked on a pair of Sure Grip 37 boots to swap the Boxers that my Quadline setup is mounted on. The boots weren't even sold in a pair. Just separately and cost more than my stock Fames. I was very upset. But I got lucky with some extra bookings and have ordered some Lollies. I hope I get them before 2022...
True, I love my evoke crazy skates! My second pair was stolen, but they’re great on the street and comfy. Hated my impalas though. I kinda wish those were stolen instead smh, I can’t skate more than 30 minutes on them, they’re stiff and my feet get really hot in them. Plus the wheels suck.
I'm a guy and we're a 44-45 euro size in skates and it's so hard finding options for skates. I'm struggling to find a great pair 😭 I don't mind spending the money just can't find sites that sell good ones
This is a really good and detailed breakdown. As someone with Scottish ancestry I am inherently stingy so the cost of things such as roller skates is always a concern. LOL But I understand it so much better now, thank you for sharing this video!
Maybe the solution is some kind of skate buyback scheme run by the brands or in collaboration with them, like what they do now with concert tickets to stop gouging and put a cap on reselling prices.
When I first got interested in roller skating I bought the cheapest skates I could find, as I didn't have a lot of money and even the 70€ for the cheap skates where almost more than I could afford at that time. And I really regret that decision. It's been years now and I can count the times I've used them on my hands, while skating itself is enjoyable (the few times I got to skate on other skates made that abundantly clear), the experience on my cheap skates is not in the slightest, so I just don't. I wished I had known back then, what I know about skating now, and would have saved up a bit more money to buy better ones right away.
Some people just want to earn money that way.. I want to get skates, but my mom wants to take me roller skating somewhere before I really buy any. Get why skates are a little expensive now!
I already have a good pair of skates. But they each have one blade. I've been wondering what my sale a program would look like on a half pipe. Yuk you wore mouth guards? What's it like?
Great information, thanks Indy for the analysis lets keep healthy the skate community! By the way what about cheap skates? There are a lot out there, specially in Amazon, I think they copy many cool designs and sell them at price point of $35 USD. KEEP ON SKATING!
Okay, I know you specialize in quads, but what about inline skates? Same thing, as far as "you're not gonna find even halfway decent skates for under $100" kind of thing?

Great point about all the component parts that make up a skate, not so bad after all price wise. As for buying up skates and reselling higher, it’s business. Moxy sell at profit initially, so how is a reseller different ?

Yeah you can get hurt when they do that.
Manufacturers are currently making a lot of money and do excessive pricing. E.g. Radar Energy wheels by Riedell. 25% price increase in summer.
Lollies are not the only good skate out there, people.
Can you please tell me , I’ve bought three sets of skates , not happy with any of them .
I’m pretty sure Bont makes everything.
Same
This is a really good and detailed breakdown. As someone with Scottish ancestry I am inherently stingy so the cost of things such as roller skates is always a concern. LOL But I understand it so much better now, thank you for sharing this video!
You can add grind blocks ?
I have the lollys back in February 2019 love them and the jack boot is my dream skate 😍🥰
Me too! The big M on the back is so cool.
Cant wait for the next video, love you indie, I look up to you quite a lot🤍🛼
What outdoor wheels would you recommend
How much do Moxi lolly cost new ... And how much should they cost heavily used???
Can you please do a review of Chaya Melrose skates!!!✨🛼
Which skate is best for wide feet...I keep seeing mixed reviews for both of these skates. I'm definitely going for comfort. :)
Some people just want to earn money that way..
I want to get skates, but my mom wants to take me roller skating somewhere before I really buy any.
Get why skates are a little expensive now!
Please review Circle society skates
If I get skates I’m gonna get them in person so no wait lists.
I already have a good pair of skates. But they each have one blade. I've been wondering what my sale a program would look like on a half pipe. Yuk you wore mouth guards? What's it like?
I got some good beginning roller blades for cheap
Great information, thanks Indy for the analysis lets keep healthy the skate community! By the way what about cheap skates? There are a lot out there, specially in Amazon, I think they copy many cool designs and sell them at price point of $35 USD. KEEP ON SKATING!
Hey Indy! Good to see another video!
Okay, I know you specialize in quads, but what about inline skates? Same thing, as far as "you're not gonna find even halfway decent skates for under $100" kind of thing?
30.00 for a used pair of suregrip boxers. Skate rebuild so far wheels bearings 97.00. Ankle brace and new toe stops ??.??.
Really informative video: also there are scam sellers on FB now that are offering Moxis at a fifth of the price. I keep reporting them
This was TOEtally informative!! Thanks Indy you’re the best!
2:37 Is that an elbow pad or a kneed pad? It looks big 😂
It’s not just the skating prices but it’s the Bikes too also it’s going up
Lots of good information and advice here!
Yeah that price shoot up is crazy my skates that were only suppose to be like $100 came out to be $300
Thanks!
Hello, I am from India and I want to learn roller skates, in India I can't find skates, and for me to buy moxi skates, Riddell roller or chicago is way too expensive as beginner, I don't know what to do now, I am just so passionate about skating, watching your videos daily, day by day my curiosity of learning skates is increasing, somebody help..to find a affordable pair of skates.
You are an interesting person ☀️ could you please make more rollerblading videos as well? You have some, but I am hungry for more blading videos 💞
I bought 2 pairs of moxi lolly from a skateshop in California I only waited 1 week for them
Great point about all the component parts that make up a skate, not so bad after all price wise.
As for buying up skates and reselling higher, it’s business. Moxy sell at profit initially, so how is a reseller different ?
Like I do like moxi but they are WAY to expensive and I use roller derby
hey indy im an intermediate getting back into skating so do u think that impala pastel purple wheels and the black impala skate is good for an intermediate?
the wheels are hy'brids btw
There have always been crappy fashion skates ... it's not a new phenomenon.
Sad but true, expensive hobby but it's worth it
I'm proud you have your mojo back girlfriend they can never keep a good one down all evil weapons formed against me shall not prosper when your soul is pure...

I didn’t recognize you since you look so tan or maybe it’s the colors lol idk 🤣
Ok I think if we're to the point that we have to finance skates we got a problem. 🙄
What are some skates good for skateparks aside moxi lolis?
I love this sexy ma and all u lady rollers out there keep it up. peace love and roll ❣️ gbam
Are you Nick Jones sister?
Niceeee
I don’t believe that there’s any roller skate on the planet that should cost close to 1,000 dollars.
Bottega Veneta would beg to differ. Look up their "Quilt" roller skate. It's ridiculous.
There are skates that do cost 1k.
Second hehe 🙃
First hehe
