Thank you so much! When I was learning this in class, I was immensely confused. I asked my teacher to clarify me, but I still couldn’t understand. So she kindly showed me this video and now I understand how the vertical line test works!
Woah I'm back again to study for the finals. Thanks you're such a great help. I pretty much learn from you than our professor. THANK YOU AGAIN, I OWE YOU ONE
Brilliant! So simple, yet effective. But I really want to know why this shows graphs to be functions or not. What does it mean for a graph to be a function anyway?
Merethor Okura the definition for a function is for every one x value there is a y value if any x values repeat than it. Fails the definition of a function if there are the same y value but different x values than it still is a function the line test proves this
The vertical line test contains a vertical line. A vertical line can only go through a single x-value, but the vertical line also goes through every possible y-value! If an x-value of a point has exactly one y-value, then the vertical line will pass through only that point. But if the x-value of the point has, let’s say 3 y-values, then the vertical line will go through those three points. Keep in mind, the three points haves the same x-value, and the vertical line can only have one x-value. (Hence, a vertical line can be named as an x-value, such as x=3 or x=4)
Functions by definition can only provide a single output. If there are two different positions corresponding to a single X input, it means it is not a function, it means that the Y at that point is undefined. The vertical line test basically just tells you whether or not its a function by discerning whether or not there is one or more outputs, but it helps visualize it.
why thank you kind sir for the informational video about the vertical line test, my mathematics teacher was not able to have me to understand this concept because of its complexity, but now i fully understand how it works due to the simple explanation and examples you have presented.
thank you man you saved me before a quick that I have to take tomorrow you're the goat man you can teach more to me in 5 mins than my teacher can in 30
3:10 you can google this and find so many answers on if this is a function or not. Just to keep it simple: y = √x is a function so long as that's all you're doing. The minute you convert it to x = y^2, or if you decide you're working with ±√x, you're no longer a function.
Thank you so much for teaching me from this type of technique.I had understood all the things that you have try to understand us.THANKS YOU SO MUCH SIR.
It is good that you show how to use the vertical line test but what I was really looking for is an explanation on why something may or may not be a function if it passes or fails the test.
The vertical lines which was covering the phantom of the Opera mask which was light blue now has become double orange vertical line the left line is now orange to cover the mask
can someone explain to me how is the square root of x is a real function, the square root result should include both positive and negative values like sqroot (4) won't the answer be +2,-2
what other points does the vertical line touch? genuine question from a very confused student😭 the line can't touch any other point from what I can see
@@Mantha1203none. There's functions. If the vertical line goes through the graphed points (shown as the red lines) once it's a function. The vertical line passing through the black lines the x and y plane that makes the plus or cross sign + doesn't count. Get it?
The square root function only works on positive numbers and only returns positive numbers. Because both negative numbers and positive numbers become positive when squared, you have to assume that the square root of an unknown variable x is both positive and negative, but if you know the number (Like in a function), the outcome is always a single positive number
Sri Hari because there is different video covering horizontal line test and this is only covering vertical line test. ua-cam.com/video/6u9Qh1Vi_Qw/v-deo.html here is the link if you want to watch the horizontal line test

This takes 30 seconds to explain and understand why is it so hard??? I shouldn't be so confused about the simplest of all things, but it's because my teacher thinks some things are so simple that there's no need to explain it at all. So then youtube ends up teaching me more (more thoroughly and in a shorter amount of time) than my own math teacher. Some things shouldn't be confusing like this lmao

This is a life saver, thank youuu 🥳 I just hope this came out in our prelims or Idk what i'm gonna do HAHAHAHAHAHAHA 💕
Keep going man!! I really like your teaching. Bless you
You explained it so well
Can you put down the vertical line just where u did or can u put it in other areas
You are a good tutor, keep it up! 😊
Heyyyy what if there are two points(one is an open circle and one is a closed circle) in the x axis? Is that a function or not?
You know God sees ur struggles when He leads you to this video even after you told Him its fine.
Yes amen💕❤️✝️🙏
Yes
Thank you for making things easier
another good example may have been a side by side comparison of (to make it obvio):
y^3=x and y=x^(1/3)
But the tangent line doesn't pass through 2 point of the circle.., what about that ?
I am really confused😕
love your style of videos

Yeacher has 1 hour to teach us this guy teaches it better in 5 minutes with plenty of examples
*Just one correction needed :-* 2:36
*Y=X its not that graph it's a straight line passing thru origin with a slope of 45° and it's a function* ↗️
Teacher you made it easier ❤❤❤❤❤
He made it 10x simple then my college professor
Very easy method
Thanks 👍
so we can draw the vertical line wherever we want as long as its parallel to the y-axis?
i think so
This helped me to understand a lot, thanks!
I have a better understanding now. Thanks.
U are from which country?

Vertical line (or upright line)
If it touches two or more line it's not a function of only one it's function
THANK YOU!! VERY HELPFUL ❤❤❤

i am going to use this in the real world so much
this helped me so much!
Thanks man so much
Thank you so much!
WOW!! My teacher made me memorise those graphs without explaining the actual reason as to why those graphs are/are not the function of x :(
I swear my teacher makes algebra so much harder
so what would it be called since its not a function
It’s called Relation
I understand this so much now
Thank you! God Bless😇
So, the definition of a function is something on a graph that can pass the vertical line test.
