    1:43 if you want to find all t in desmos, you can do this
    2x² - 4x = t
    2x² - 4x - t = 0
    using discriminant formula b² - 4ac
    if b² - 4ac > 0, quadratic has 2 real roots
    if b² - 4ac = 0, quadratic has 1 real root
    if b² - 4ac < 0, quadratic has no real root (or has imaginary root)
    we want b² - 4ac < 0
    (-4)² - 4*2*(-t)
    16 + 8t < 0
    plug this in desmos and you have the solution :)
    or you can do by hand
    8t < -16
    t < -16/8
    t < -2

    Excellent video. This is truly an insane update to the SAT. On the one hand I think it's great to embrace computer tools which people will freely use in real life and it's silly to train students as if that's not the case. But on the other hand, you literally do not need to know anything about algebra in order to solve ANY equation. That is nuts!

    • @Borisaurus8826
      @Borisaurus8826 5 місяців тому +7

      Equivalent expressions problems still require algebra so it's not COMPLETELY gone. In my opinion, DESMOS itself is fine, but a lot of the PROBLEMS that are solved with DESMOS aren't good. Finding the vertex of a quadratic or the solution to a system of equations doesn't say much about your logical thinking or problem solving abilities, with or without DESMOS.

    • @omduggineni
      @omduggineni 5 місяців тому +3

    • @omduggineni
      @omduggineni 5 місяців тому +2

      Tho it is worth noting that most of these problems could be solved by a normal Ti-84’s graphing features if you learn them well enough, it’s just a bit too clunky/slow to be the meta

    • @omduggineni
      @omduggineni 5 місяців тому

      @learnsatmath Also, brother, equivalent expressions problems don’t require algebra so long as the answer is multiple choice. Just subtract the answer choices from the first expression and the one that’s equal to 0 is the equivalent one. You can do this really quickly by subtracting a function from a list of functions like [x, x^2] - x^2. I’m in college now (thank goodness) but I used this strategy on my Ti-84 when I took the SAT.

    10:54 if you get into this situation and you don't wanna do trial and error, you can:
    1. plot the quadratic as f(x)
    2. type in f'(x) = m (m is the slope of the line, in this case 3), then record the intersection of the vertical line and the parabola
    3. Type the line equation onto desmos, replacing y with the y coordinate of the intersection earlier, x with the x coordinate, and a with x so desmos solves the equation for you. The x that comes out of this is the answer (in this case, it's -8)

      At 10:54 you can't actually plug in the possibly answers choices for x into the variable a.
      The answer choices happens to include -8 but didn't have to. The final answer is x=6.
      methods:
      1.If you use trial and error in Desmos you might eventually get to a=-8.
      Once you have a=-8 you can solve the system or just look at the point. (X,Y)
      The x-coordinate of the point is 6.
      x=6
      2.or (without trial and error and, also, little use of Desmos)
      since it is only a one point intersection we know b^2 -4ac = 0
      That's part of the quadratic equation. The square root of 0 is 0.
      now you have just x=-b/2a
      x=6
      (the rules for intersections btw linear and quadratic:
      if it was a 2-point intersection then b^2-4ac>0

      You could also use calculus to solve it. Because the first equation is a quadratic and the second is linear and it says they only intersect once, the second equation must be a tangent line to the first. You can tell the slope of the second equation is 3. You can then take the derivative of the first equation, set it equal to 3, and solve for x. 4x-21=3 so x=6

    10:53 here you can combine the two equations and substitute a with y to get 2x^2-24x+64=y and click on the vertex to get the y value (i.e. the a value).
    Because the algebra of combining the two equations is easy here, is is probably a bit faster than trying all the options
    14:21 here I think it's faster to graph the function and just eyball it at each x axis - none of the answer choices differ by a precise amount.

    • @learnsatmath
      @learnsatmath  5 місяців тому

      10:53 very cool idea, though I think for most students it would overcomplicate things, and it's prob not worth saving 5 seconds for a higher risk of error

      why are you able to substitute a with y?

    • @OverclockingCowboy
      @OverclockingCowboy 4 місяці тому

      Even if you don’t make the y=a substitution, the algebra is relatively simple.
      2x^2 - 24x + (64-a) = 0
      2 (x^2 -12x) + (64-a) = 0
      You can complete the square:
      2 (x-6)^2 = 0
      Thus, x=6
      To know the value of “a”:
      2(6)(6) = 64-a
      72 = 64 - a
      a = -8
      DESMOS can be used to verify the answer. No slider needed.

      slope intercept form is y= mx + b
      personally what I would do is graph the first equation on desmos, find the slope, then rewrite the second equation in the slope form as well.
      the slope of the first equation is 1/4
      and second equations slope is 2/x (x as a sit in for t)
      we just need to make them equal, and 1/4 is equal to 2/8.
      8 is where our x (t) used to be, so t = 8.
