Thank you bud morning coffees sorted 👌👍
It's the least I can do. Keep up the good work.
Salvage rebuilds is what brings me to youtube 👌👌
Me too
?
Croydon is my turf… and there’s P L E N T Y of bush rash in Croydon 🤣
Another great vid Rob and Chris 👍🏻
Hi Rob, this evoque was definitely caused by the blocked DPF, when it gets blocked the exhaust gasses can’t escape so it pretty much grenades it self, very common on these cars since people just drive it locally and don’t drive it for long distance, so the main cause is the blocked dpf causing the engine to explode unfortunately
Apparently its common problem when the dpf is blocked it somehow takes the engine out with it if not fixed straight away possibly puts pressure on the engine as I know of 4 that have happened the exact same way dpf problem lead to chain problem but hopefully its a straight forward job and not to much pocket damage 👍👍👍
I love it when Chris explaines why and how the faults occur and how it can be sorted.
So, while you have bigger fish to fry for some time on this one, once you get the engine sorted you'll need to clear those DPF faults before you can do anything with it. On JLR cars, you DON'T need to remove the DPF to clean them. You can inject DPF cleaner (I like Wynn's Off Car DPF cleaner - it comes in 5L jugs) through the differential pressure sensor inlet valve. I use a modified garden sprayer and inject about 1.5L. Let it sit for about 30-60 minutes, then start the car and let the engine heat flush the fluid out the exhaust (it will product lots of white smoke.) Take it for a drive and use your Autel to force a regeneration out on the motorway. Once you return from that drive, you'll still have the red DPF clogged message on the dash. You again plug in your Autel and use the Hot Function for DPF/SCR to do a DPF replacement. You don't really replace the DPF, you just tell the car that you did it using the Autel. Once you've done this, the DPF will be clean and the message and the check engine light will disappear. If you have any questions about the process, reach out to me and I'll be happy to walk you through the process, been there several times with my Range Rover before I figured out what was causing the car to fail to regen in the first place (it was a bad throttle....) There is a great channel on UA-cam called O'Rileys Mobile Mechanics and they have many videos showing how it's done on this specific vehicle.
Good write up, 👍
Rob I got my hair cut just like yours.... didn't even ask...guy just did it..unreal! I'm starting to buy white sneakers and trackie bottoms. You've created a vortex 😍
Rob Clone#1 😄
Peaky Blinders?
Been running around with the dpf light on for weeks. Thinking, well it drives ok. Then bang
Previous keeper is well shot of that one. Mind you, it should make for a great video series for us.
You may be surprised by the lady's description of events but my Insignia CDTi did a similar thing. Out shopping in the morning no issues. Had lunch and as I set off for an hospital appointment the car failed to start. After my usual garage failed to diagnose problem I found a Vauxmaster technician willing to take on the task. Turned out the crankshaft pulley woodruff key had failed causing damage to exhaust camshaft ie snapped! The had done 110,000miles at the time and after Andre rebuilt the engine she has just passed another Mot with 131,000miles and going strong! Great channel and look forward to watching more 👍
My cousins machine shop has these in all the time , cheap crap materials used like most of the Jlr stuff nowadays, I’d be very very surprised it was turned off first before it let go as they rattle for a bit then let go. You’d be amazed how many are having DPF deletes as they cannot be seen on many cars/vans etc, the tuner guys up the midlands are doing hundreds and still passing MOTS regardless of being illegal, people getting more mpg and no hassle anymore out weighs the risk in these times.
I understand that the ingenium engines have an oil dilution issue due to dpf problems. The oil dilution leads to stretched timing chains. I fixed one over lockdown. I’d recommend recon engine but you guys know what you doing better than me. Good luck gents
Chris's face when he found the shrapnel 🤣🤣
Just a thought for blocked DPF Filters, Go to any motor Factors and buy a Wyns 5liter Off Car DPF cleaner. Its about £40 with VAT. cap the end of dpf and fill it up with the fluid and leave over night. The stuff is magic i sell bolt loads of them.😀
It's still a cracking motor Rob, not my cupa tea, but definitely worth fixing, definitely don't rush your self to fix it, plenty of great content with these other motors you both have, hopefully it is semi easy to fix thought, have a lovely week mate!
Timing chains are really common on these Ingenium engines, even with low mileage and full JLR service history. I'm sure you've already done the Google searches and seen the astronomical prices JLR quote to change the chain before it fails. I could be wrong but I heard from someone else in the trade that the oil squirters block up due to the long service intervals and the chain eventually dries up and fails. Regarding the low battery alert on the dash, my XC60 of similiar age (and probably similar Ford based electrionics) shows the low battery alert when it goes to 11.95V. I've had the message appear 2-3 minutes of interior lights & radio after a full charge. I'm sure you'll make good money when it's all done and the rebuilt engine will actually be a selling point!
🤣 loving Chris face when he finds coins ...classic
Years ago, our mk 3 cortina cam belt broke, because of the inset valves it's just new belt retime and vroom 👍
Mike
And that ladies and gentlemen is why my Ingenium engined XF has an extended warranty!
Followed you since your ferrari days Rob &Chris.Preferred how you used to work on the one car till it was finished instead of having many projects.
Thanks for entertaining me over the years
As other have said the Ingenium engine has a reputation for stretching chains - JLR should have done a recall but didn't! I have read that in 2019 JLR did a modification to the engine that can be retro fitted to earlier cars - think this one will need some research - owners forums might be good.
Got a similar car similar age, 2.0 diesel Ingenium engine, mine has 38000, went into garage for other works and mechanic noticed timing chain noise. They are notorious for chain stretching & tensioners, mine was replaced under warranty
Great Video Johnny and Rob,there is a recall on the MOT sheet on line , love the shrapnel joke ..
I tried T-cut on my bush rash, but it failed to remove the rash but was super smooth😊Great as always fellas.
Love it when you get your mucking words fuddled loll
😆 Chris is definitely the sensible one... Rob " let's get straight into it 😂 love the enthusiasm
Hi guys bad news on that but a little advise with the isuzu. Do a forced regeneration on it. But if it comes back on after a short distance take the dpf out and blow it out with a hairline dont use chemical or jetwash . Once blown out you can fit the dpf in reverse as it is same fitting which will help you out more.oh and replace the bolts as they will snap. Ps even with a blocked dpf engines will still start but cut out straight away
As a first guess, probably on original battery that’s now knackered. Or, run out of adblue thus stopping it starting or dpf blocked.
As a "Dyed in the Wool" Land Rover owner for the last 30years, I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole. The 2 litre Ingenium timing components are made of weak materials that cause the chains to stretch and snap. However, I doubt very much there was absolutely no symptoms before it did let go and that it was "fine" when she turned it off !
If I were going for a first generation diesel Evoque, I'd be after a 2.2 Sd4 190hp engine. Fairly bullet proof !
ISTR that you can get an uprated chain for the Ingenium engine, but not being an Evoque or Disco Sport guy, I'm not 100% sure whether all new chains are of the uprated type.
The 2.2 Td4 and subsequent Sd4 engines are actually PSA Peugeot Citroen engines and Ford's TDCI Duratorque engines are also Peugeot engines.
Iv had 2 2.2 Evoque’s
@@sruk
I did fancy a 3 door Evoque but the other half put a stop to that - she knew I'd put a roll cage in it - like I did with all my 3 door Freelander 1's I've owned ! Currently running a heavily modified Freelander 2 with the rarer 3.2 straight 6 Volvo petrol engine.
Looking forward to the next episode. I'm sure you'll make it go as good as new. But sort out the dpf, as they're notorious for causing a world of pain with oil dilution. Give that dipstick a sniff for diesel ! The biggest cause of dpf problems in the Land Rovers is short journeys where the dpf doesn't get hot enough to burn off all the shite and eventually clogs up. But, I'm sure you guys already know this so I'm preaching to the choir !
Another cracking video gents. Short runs on diesel cars can potentially clog up your DPF filter due to accumulation of soot.Broken timing chain ,is another more serious issue. I hope that the engine damage is minimal .Wish you luck.
Landrover contributed towards our timing chain replacement on our DS about the same age. Shame it wasn’t seen before failure.
There are a few threads online about timing component failure and the consequences on the JLR Ingenium 2.0 Diesel engines.
Got a horrible feeling you have been had off on this one fellas. Think they knew what the problem was.
Yeah I suspect so too
Agree with you, they wanted another £800 as they had to strip the engine down to find the fault and would have explained why.
@@letsdoitnow121 100% that £800 was to pull the engine and see what was knackered. I know Rob and Chris are honest, straight up blokes and wont let on their feelings. But I know they must feel the same. Just hope they still get a beer out of it once done
Chris’ face when he saw the shrapnel 😂😂😂 you’re cruel Rob !!!
Short journeys causes a blocked DPF, which causes oil dilution, which causes a stretched timing chain. It’s a well known problem for the Ingenium engined Evoque, which owners can prevent by doing regular motorway runs in sports mode to regen the Dpf, premium fuel and most importantly oil changes every 5k miles to stop oil dilution.
Rob you need to talk to Lee at Barum Engines, would be great to see a collaboration between you guys. Cant wait to watch this one 👌🏼
Would be nice to see a video with Chris truck getting that dpf cleaned
I agree .....my mates has gone on his vw caddy
Tools on your tolly , luv it, good luck guys , take advice before proceeding is the way forward
Sorry I spat my coffee out laughing when I saw Rob adding in all that spare change to the cup holder :D🤣
The same thing happened to me with a peugeot timing belt years ago. I was lucky no damage.
Amazing how you two picked up the problem, but the garage needed another £800 to come up with a diagnosis 🤣
Variety is the spice of life and what keeps me glued to your channel! Intrigued to see what happens next 👍
Certainly a brave man taking on a Range Rover non runner. Bad rep for electrical problems costs an arm and two legs to replace modules
Chris and the change hahah.
Before a engine with chain will have the same chain sometimes for ever, nowadays they last less than belts... The hydraulic tensioners that use oil pressure to keep the tension normally go in may cars as people don't service them or use cheap oil. The 1st version of Toyota Yaris suffered a lot with that.
The JLR Ingenium diesels are absolute dogs, no end of issues with them, especially the chains stretching/snapping.
Love a bit of engine trouble. Nice bit of oily mechanic stuff for you guys. Can't wait for you to open it up and have my fingers crossed for you in anticipation. Good luck. :)
It needs a brand-new second hand battery in that!!
It's amazing how things can brake just by turning the engine over will be good to see what turns up in the investigation hopefully this one can be a rebuilt engine can't wait to see what you find 👍
I always look forward to these videos but today i had a severe case of the giggles with the "Tolley and some Trools" Rob you are a star, and with that its the "Engine" of my comment. 🤣🤣
If the dpf is on red then the oil dilution will be very high causing the chain to snap. Common on these engines. Be interesting to see how high the oil level is on dip stick. I have this ingenium engine in my discovery sport. Good engines if looked after and dpf is cared for.
I want to see you take that apart, I'll get the trools and the tolly for you
It’s probably because his teeth are due for an mot😬
If I go a few weeks in our beater with a heater (Fiat Sedici) without a hard drive up the motorway we get limp mode 3200 revs max but it always starts, last scan was 87% blocked dpf. Hopefully the Cam has done not too "spiteful" dammage.
Is like watching "Murder She Wrote"..so exciting figuring out what' went wrong. Brilliant stuff 🥰😍💙💛❣️☮️
It's amazing that two guy's who freely admit to not having enough experience with this engine can more or less diagnose what the problem is and yet a so called specialist wanted more cash before they could figure out what was wrong.
I believe that you two will have this up and running again in half the time that it would take that other place to do it.
Another great video, thanks lads. 👍
I wish some major high end company that do high end electronics would sponsor you some lairy microphones then we could hear you properly
Thanks!
These JLR Ingenium Diesels are crap, especially these earlier ones. Timing chains are notorious on them. The ridiculously long manufacturer specified service intervals for oil changes don't help apparently. Here's a couple of quid for a coffee, you're gonna need it on this one ;-)
Thank you
DPF could be a second issue if the owner has been doing runs to a school only just around the corner. Agree that getting Phoenix to strip/rebuild it, while being videoed, is the best way forward - good content and saves your time, also probably cheaper than buying a complete recon engine.
If you can take the dpf filter and put it in a bucket of hot soapy water and leave it for about 24 hours and see what comes out.
Nice to see another North Wales Car on the Channel. Good old Conwy Land Rover. Good video guys
No fault code for cam and crank sensor correlation. And there's definitely still some compression there somewhere. My guess is a spun/snapped cam shaft. Think you might be lucky here
Chris finding treasure in the cubby is funny. 😃😃
Little man in there 😂😂 🔨
Bit of shrapnel in there ! 👍😂😂
That engine is a JLR Ingenium that was in these cars from late 2015 onwards. You guys have worked on one before. It was a Discovery Sport you had.
We haven’t bud 👍
You did. GD65 GJY. Black top spec Disco Sport. One year ago you worked on it. It was 100 per cent the same engine.
Nice evoque guys hope you repair it would like to see it done
Nice buy, tongue tied Wednesday for you rob🤣🤣🤣
I'm glad you are optimistic about this one, I'd be gutted. Just shows again you really know what you are doing. Looking forward to the next installment.
It was cheap 'cause there was something wrong with it after all but now at least you know what to fix. Should be able to re-use the short block so will still make a nice earner out of this.
What a very nice car, many thanks, sorted well done Rob and Chris
Looking forward to the investigation and you chaps doing the business! Cheers!
Another brilliant vid!! Dpf made sense, lives round the corner, short journeys etc. but chain snap!! Rare surely? Dvla have it as 15, but diag tool said 16
yout question to pheonix is are the cam lobes machined or pressed on ?
then pull the injrctors get the bore scope in ther and see how many are bent and on which cylinders
he thought it was Christmas when he saw that shrapnel 😂 he couldn't get rid of you quick enough
Great video thanks hope you can get the engine sorted
i really like what you do so many people just right vehicles off thanks for the video
Nice one lads ... Looking forward to seeing the outcome of the Land rover engine rebuild/repair . Keep em coming stay safe ...
Lovely kitchen Rob great channel big thumbs up 🤗 for channel
This is going to be a cracking repair job . Looking forward to this one .
The timing chain on ours snapped at 34k thankfully still under warranty
It must have been rattling it's brains out for a while before the chain finally let go. Whilst these engines are notorious for this issue - they do give you prior warning with the noise they make - looking forward to the repair.
I recently saw a statistic that said 11% of Range Rover owners keep them less than a year. Not sure how that compares with other makes but it seems quite high. But you guys can fix it and someone will buy it so all good 👍. Love my 2001 Discovery V8. It’s thirsty but easy to work on and easy to fix.
New t-shirt... "Let's grab the tolley and some trools" 😁
Ouch. I never saw that coming.
Moral: Don't buy a diesel for the school run. Cheaper to teach your kids to walk - though maybe not in Croydon 😄
Cannot stop laughing at Chris with that shrapnel….honestly made my day
9:58 put it in the pot for the little 'un? Is there a mini Chris in the background? Or one on the way?😳
DPF faults sometimes manifest from engine thermostats sticking open so the engine doesn't get hot enough to trigger the DPF regeneration sequence.
The chain has definitely snapped because my dad bought one and there was a taping noise and the chain almost snapped but my dad had to take the engine out and had to pay £2,556 to fix it .
Nice vehicles for, space, ride and comfort. That's about it. Everything else is a "Dog's Dinner" as the saying goes. See you both in the next one. 👍👍
I did an oil change on one off this and ones all was done I cranked over and I hear a similar noise...turn up to be a broken camshaft... and yes I put oil before I cranked
Quick diagnosis you two👌
Blimey, £800 to find out what you guys found out in half an hour! Crazy prices.
Looks like secondary timing chain has gone. Cams are situated in a cam carrier seperate from the cylinder head 👍🏼
Could this one be saved then?
@@WoodyBoy1992 There's a good chance yeah. Like Chris said it wasn't being revved when the chain "went" so that's a positive. You never can say for sure with a chain snap though
There's a good chance as the rockers in these engines are sacrifical, a design carried over from the DW12 PSA engines. Could well get away with new cams, replace whichever rockers are bust (if any) and new timing chains.
@@cliveb9126 Fingers crossed for Chris and Rob that this is the case 😂
@@Buzz1H1TT3RQU1TT3R absolutely!
Hope you get it sorted guys would be interesting to see how you clean the dpf on Chris truck can’t say I’ve ever seen it done
The 2 litre ingenium engines are notorious for chain stretching then failure
Looking forward to see the engine being pulled apart chaps 👍🏻
Evening Guys. How disappointing ☹️ But that’s what salvage rebuilds is all about 🤩 Just listening to Chris talking about the problem is priceless 😄 I really hope you take this one apart for us all 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
between robs tolly and some trools and chris's shrapnel you keep us well entertained.
Balance shaft failure common with the Ingenium diesels
Looks good gents and hopefully not too much damage. 👍
