Because if you can brew it you can just use it to your advantage in desert pyramids, village chests, ect
Okay, so I found out how Luck actually effects generated structure loot not too long ago. It is not supposed to give you better loot. Instead, when loot is generated each item is added based on a "roll" (the game randomly chooses an item based on an items weight or probability of being given). However, not every chest gives the same number of unique items. Some generated structure chests have a chance of giving you more items through a bonus "roll"; however you are not guaranteed it. What the Luck effect does is it increases your chance of getting that bonus "roll" based on your level of Luck.
So... luck effect doesn't give you better loot, but does give you more loot?
you're right, the luck 255 chests gave 221 items and the no luck chest gave 169 items.
same
Makes sense
But shouldn't "bonus_rolls" be specified in the loot table for this to work? You can check, but I don't think any of the vanilla loot tables specify the "bonus_rolls" parameter.
Also, you can specify the "quality" of loot table entries. If you do so, the higher your luck is, the more you are likely to get higher quality items. This is used for fishing loot.
Imagine if luck affected how many eyes were in the end portal...
Hahaha that would be interesting
Maybe being lucky and getting a heart
Interesting
That's seed specific for one thing, and wouldn't work really at all
@@jansenncuber8009 No but think about it though. Luck affected loot in chests when all other versions of the game are seed specific loot. So the game could check to see your luck as soon as u enter a stronghold and give you the eyes dependent on it.
Imagine if they added clovers to the lush caves, and then there would be a VERY small chance the find a four leaved clover, which you could use to brew a potion of luck.
This is an excellent idea

And maybe there would also be rotten clovers to brew bad luck potion

I feel like the luck effect can be reintroduced into the game with a botanical/agriculture update where they include a clover and theres a certain chance to drop a four-leaf when broken and you can use that for a temp effect of luck to use before opening a dungeon chest
Great Idea!

why not using Dripleafs into brewing stand?

I think, if luck is ever fully implemented in the game, it would only effect non-tool rng (loot from chests, Villager trades, etc). Minecraft doesn’t really like certain things interfering with each other, whether it’s due to balancing or other reasons, so having it effect the rng that isn’t already able to be tampered with would go with that theme
I’m pretty sure the luck effect did work on naturally spawning chest and fishing rod only for that one week it was In the game, but after that they changed it so the luck effect only works for fishing
I remember seeing this in the potion inventory and was like "Ohh, how cool." but never used it again.
I've meddled with loot tables and the luck attribute before, and optimizing the effect would be trivial, as you could just change a few values for block drops, and quality for chest/mob drops

Your voice is so entertaining! The production seems so high quality it’s impossible for me not to watch any video you make

As someone who's worked with loot tables, I can shed some light on this. In order for luck to affect loot table chances, you have to specifically configure the loot table with "quality" or "bonus_rolls" attributes. Most loot tables have bonus_rolls set to 0 so no matter your luck amount you won't get extra rolls, and the fishing loot tables are the only ones which use the quality attribute. I think luck modifiers are largely unimplemented because Mojang is hesitant to make Luck obtainable in gameplay, it could give players a fear of missing out if they open a chest without the Luck effect active. But on the other hand, it would make grindy activities like hunting wither skulls and tridents less of a chore if you could chug down a luck potion beforehand.
The thing is, we already have Fortune and Looting for things like that. I think the problem here is psychology. Even though resources are infinite, I do the minimal amount of mining possible before obtaining a Fortune III pickax. In fact, my whole early game is basically a rush to obtain Fortune III on a pickax, and I don't think I'm alone in that. Only then do I feel like I'm not wasting ores when I mine them, even though there are more ores out there than I'll ever use. If Luck effected loot, my guess is a lot of players would feel Luck was a necessity when playing.
@@celebrim1 , absolutely same. I think we just don't want to waste non-renewable resources (diamonds, lapides lazuli, etc.), after all, sooner or later, if we start digging up the whole world, there will be nothing left but the items in the containers.
Slight note: clovers do not have hear shaped leaves. I know the clover emoji 🍀 does, but if you actually look up an image of a clover they have rounded leaves! There is a plant that does have heart shaped leaves that looks a lot like a clover though: Wood Sorrel.
So if we're being nitpicky (always fun...) the symbol for luck in Minecraft is a four leaf wood sorrel
Actually, I have seen both rounded and heart-shaped leaves. I know for sure I have rounded-shape 4-leaf clovers, and I think I have a heart-shape 4-leaf clover too.
@RealMelodyHope are you sure it's a clover? Wood Sorrel does look very similar which is why it's so often confused with it. Wood Sorrel is often a lighter shade of green, and grows small yellow flowers that are completely different from the pom poms of clovers.

I knew about the existence of the luck potion/effect for some years, but for a long time I thought it was just fortune in potion/effect form, meaning it would give you more block drops.
I also didn't know that it can change chest loot as I thought chest loot was entirely dependent on the seed.
But even after so many years you can still learn new things about Minecraft.
Another awesome minecraft vid :)
:)
Some potion effects act different once you pass level 127. Is it possible that luck is one of these? Testing on level 255 could mean you are testing at the equivalent difference of level 0 vs level -0
it worked with fishing tho
I think it's one of those features specialized for map makers. It could easily be granted temporarily when dungeoneering, upon killing a certain mob, or completing a quest.
My most plausible guess is that the potion is there for mapmakers. Any mapmaker can add a "quality" tag to their loot tables (which will cause Luck to affect the table contents), and it might be useful for such an effect to exist when rolling loot.
I remember seeing this effect years ago, and read that it gave better fishing items, but I didn't know about chest generated loot.
Also, wait, using the same seed doesn't give you the same loot anymore? I've been living a lie this whole time.
Also, my theory on luck is that they are working on it, but it's low priority rn, kinda like the illusioner.
It does still, if you watch the xisuma vid he explains it more clearly. It only changes if you generate a loot chest with a command and set it to modify with luck. All world generated chests will have the same loot, otherwise there wouldn't be a point to a 1.9+ set seed category in speed running
Ohhhh wish we could get luck in survival! Love the vid!
The reason why luck only affects fishing is because the loot tables in the game files of the fishing have a quality modifier, which increases (or decreases) the weight for that item to drop , weight is basically the chance for an item to drop, if I were to create a loot table, with a stick with a weight of 9 and a diamond with a weight of 1 the chances would be 90% stick and 10% diamond (the formula is chance = weight / sum) only the fishing loot tables have a quality modifier, while every other loot table doesn't, this is the same on Minecraft bedrock, where the luck effect got completely removed, the way quality works is weight = weight + (quality * generic.luck) and when quality is not defined the default value is 0. In Minecraft bedrock you can create addons in which you can create loot tables, and in the documentation there is the quality modifier which gets used with luck, and as i said that effect got completely removed from bedrock... I think they might add this effect again and make it usable in survival mode in a later version.
Pathfinder is a really good song, I was surprised to hear it in the background lol (I have played Jsab so that's where I found it)
i really need a luck potion irl rn
theory: the reason why luck doesn't work is due to the value of the luck (possibly) being "modded" (put through the modulo function, i.e. (integer1 mod integer2) returns the value of the remainder of (integer1 / integer2)), which is why maybe luck 255 is treated as not much higher or maybe even equal to luck 0 (e.g. 255 mod 5 returns 0).
where did i get this theory from? you see, according to the wiki, the value of poison is modded by 32, so perhaps it isn't the only status effect that uses the modulo function.
If it were implemented, it'd be cool if Mojang added clovers to randomly generated plants, and in plains biomes there could be clover patches that could very rarely include a four leafed clover that could be used to brew a luck potion. and for a bad luck potion, some nether equivalent of clovers, but same deal. IDK i just really want more variety in plants in game lol
When I was making data packs, I looked at all the loot tables, and luck is not used at all in any of them (that I can remember), but can be easily implemented with data packs.
FYI Luck only works to +2 without data packs. Much like certain enchants, using commands to give a level higher than programmed negates the effect 😉. I suggest you give yourself Luck 1 or 2 and retest. The effect is quite obvious. You can actually add luck to armor pieces to get this effect permanently.
except effects tend to break if you go beyond level 126...
I tried it with luck level 1 and 2 as well, and it didn't work
@@TheMisterEpic i think looking at the game's code would be the best to see if it actually does something or not
It might be interesting if the luck effect (as it applies to loot chests) was granted in some unique way, like having a rabbit nearby similar to Dolphin's Grace, and for there to be some items obtainable exclusive to a loot pool that only generates items if your luck is above 0. So going adventuring with your pets would be like a more dangerous escort mission, but with a bigger/more unique payout
Easy way to implement it is to make it increase the level of luck enchantments by its level.
Potion of luck 2 = fortune 5, looting 5, luck of the sea 5.
Simple, not too crazy.
Ah, I didn't know I had Bad Luck III while I always play, thanks
I feel like it would be easier to substitute Luck and Bad Luck effects for Mob spawn rates instead of loot tables.
Luck would decrease Hostile Mob spawn rates while increasing Friendly Mob Spawn rates. Bad Luck can do the opposite and increase the chance of Hostile mobs spawning with stronger equipments or natural charged creepers for stronger bad luck.
Actually, decreasing hostile mob spawn rate not actually a good thing while you'r farming mob
@Keny not Kenny
which would make the bad luck effect useful as a drinkable potion.
I think that a way to balance it would be for the ingredient to be a 4 leaf clover, and for it to have a very low chance to appear when you break any type of tall grass or ferns.
I think the luck enchantment was for map makers... For example you wanted a player to fish a bow, but it is difficult to get - so luck was added for map makers.
I'm a luck believer , I think that luck is actually a good potion effect (if it worked as intended for loot chests)

Moderately long wall of text coming up. Handle with care
Maybe Luck can work as a multiplier depending on the situation.
If you have luck only, the calculation would be as follows: 1.1x loot from mobs, 1.075x from mining, 1.1x for chests (more on that l8r) and 1.15x from fishing, give or take.
But, if you had any other effect that adds up to the resource gathering, the multiplier would be (luck multiplier - (enchantment level / 100) or something along the lines.
Chests, on the other hand, would have to be adjusted for each. Maybe some chests don't even benefit from Luck (maybe Treasure Bastion's treasure), or some others get a huge (~1.75x) multiplier (dungeons, mineshafts).
Or, they can be handled like they do at the moment: you roll your chances from the loot table, and for every luck level you get a number of chances to spin another time (determined by the table).
As for the crafting, maybe have some rare item that drops randomly from only one mob (can't think of one rn, maybe totem of undying but that's too expensive (?)) and have it brew on the brewing stand.
why am I writing this no one will ever see it ._.
i did see it
Maybe luck was designed to be an internal debugging tool, or designed as something else and adapted to that role.
You set your test code to use luck. You test your code (maybe the last thing they were testing was luck of the sea, and that's why it works for fishing). It works. You make it an effect and ship it. Next effect, you just swap out what luck effects, or loot tables, or whatever else you're trying to test.
As the Jedi once said: “there’s no such thing as luck”.
"good thing I thaugth you otherwise"
The way luck works technically is that it affects certain optional parts of loot tables called quality and bonus rolls which as far as i know vanilla loot tables never used except for fishing.
Bonus rolls are how many extra items it should add and are then multiplied by your luck level.
For example, Bonus rolls = 1 and you have luck 2, You would get 2 extra items.
Quality is also affected by luck however it is far more complicated since it changes how often an item is pulled using a formula.
For a simple example, Quality = 2 and luck 2, it will become 4 times as likely for you to pick that item.
Since most vanilla loottables dont have bonus rolls nor quality, luck is useless for vanilla and only useful for data packs and maps.
Source: Loot tables from minecraft wiki
In fact, I've just checked and no vanilla loot tables have quality or bonus rolls.
Meanwhile, I didn't even realize the brewing recipe for luck potions had been removed -- or mistaken thought it had been added. Anyway, you can see references to it in the code, which makes the most obvious way to use loot table inaccessible without an entity (whose luck would be tested). I was so sure it was a normal part of the vanilla game now.
From what I recall luck first needs to be inmplemented in the loot table itself for it to work with that loot table. It generates not better but more loot.
I remember the luck potion on the legacy console. I thought it was cool and then realized that it sucked and never used it again. Didn't know about bad luck though. It seems cool and I would like to see it in survival.
Luck was added so people like you would be able to create content on it. ;-)
It’s luck that people can make videos like this because it’s so good!
I think they might finish luck one day since the actual potion logo you see when you open your inventory was replaced with a new one in later versions ( I noticed on 1.17.1 but idk if it was added before that)
The luck effect, more like the placebo effect

Didn’t dream literally mod his speedrun tho lol?
I've messed around with loot tables and luck for years and I can secure that its hard to balance to around. The math alone can get annoying to balance right.
When I started playing minecraft, I thought this potion existed in survival for a long time because I had read about it on the wiki
Only OG veterans knows that luck effect in minecraft is rarely op
"Because the effect has never been obtainable in survival mode"
"It wasn't always like this though"
So, why say it has never been obtainable then..?
well, never obtainable in full releases
I actually got around 2 stacks of luck arrows. Used most for an afk fish farm but save a few. They are the rarest possessions i have in that world.
They could have just had it to where a random amount of luck happens when you drink it like from 2% or .1% more it’s luck to fort luck (this applies to all items) to there’s a chance for mor ore or a bit higher mob drop chance or better loot from fishing or higher chance for gravel or more resource from shovel or use if a hoe for a better chance of more crops or bow a chance to not consume arrows It’s like a minor upgrade. Edit: the tipped arrow can make a higher chance for better loot if used
Dream must of used this.

I think it would be cool, if the luck effect ever worked, to add a sort of Karma system to servers. If you help people out and are nice and such, you slowly accumulate good Karma, or luck, and when you are mean or an overall worse person, you get bad Karma, or bad luck. This could be applied to a survival server or a multiplayer games server, with luck effecting reward chests or normal world generated chests. Maybe, on skyblock, for example, luck could effect who you get for your team mates or what you start with (I know there are kits, but the chests that spawned in). I dont know, sounds like it could help as a bit of a server moderater of sorts, almost forcing people to be nice or get a disadvantage.

"Getting a Trident from a drowned"
Bedrock players: How cute :)

Ah yes, testing one variable and saying it does nothing. How scientifically thorough for this mystery solving video.
5:03 some potion effects have a different level limit. If you gave yourself jump boost 127 in java, it would work, but 128 would prevent jumping entirely. Instant damage 29+is basically just like getting hit by pre-1.12 snowballs. Using an anti-immunity-frame mod, I discovered that poison/wither 128+ is the same is level 0 (displays as 1). These limits go for almost anything nbt. The maximum possible velocity you can summon an entity with is 10,10,10. Anything higher is counted as 0. Enchantment level 32768 (typed 32767 in commands) is the max you can put on an item with /give. Luck might work fine with lower levels.
I think luck effect could be limited to mob drops or fishing only.. it would be easier to balance and honestly not many people care to do these things, I mean, not for too long, also since is something quite difficult to obtain, most people could get the potion/effect after they are op.
Potion effects typically break if you go above level 126 so I'm very skeptical about this video. You make great videos but you've really dropped the ball with this oversight.
I tested it with both level 1 and 2 luck, to no avail. Similarly, if you watch xisumavoid's video, he comes to the same conclusion as me
@@TheMisterEpic Ah, thank you for the response.
The reason we can’t get luck because Dream took all of it smh.

Actually, Luck _does_ work on chests... The problem is that none of the loot tables are configured in a way to let them work with luck. You see, every item entry on a loot table has a "quality" value, which uses the luck attribute to alter the item's chance of appearing... However, by default there is no value set, so the luck does nothing. If you were to go through and edit the loot tables with data packs you could make it actually work, but I guess Mojang either got too lazy or decided to stop developing the effect so they didn't fix to loot tables to work with it (I say lazy because it would take a LOT of time setting different quality values for every item in the loot pool, especially when taking into account game balance).
Most info on the wiki I assume has been obtained from data mining as they do make a statement that currently, only fishing uses the quality attribute which you couldn't really tell unless you checked the code for the use cases of quality. This is why it wouldn't ever work on mob drops and also explains why dungeon chests don't work, because dungeon chests are not fishing so don't call for the quality so will never have the loot table adjusted.
"Luck. When it comes to Minecraft, what is the first thing that comes to mind?"
Dream... He's definitely a very "lucky" person.
I feel like an easy mechanic to add for the luck potion would be world generation, just have luck give you an additional roll for high tier ore and uncommon items. I’d like to see more emerald/diamond ore and more crying obsidian per ruined portal personally.
I didn’t know what luck was supposed to do at first and I most definitely did not know about bad luck
With testing, it's possible to see that the luck/badluck effect works with chest with low level but not with high levels (I tested it in 1.12.2 (when it was the latest version) so it may have changed and I don't remember the level it stop working)
On 1.19 surely work with level 10 on ancient city chests.
I was recently thinking about what the Luck effect did...
Simple solution: create unique items that have some sort if mildy convenient functionality that is only obtained while having the luck effect. Or it could even be a trophy of some sort like a mob head, or a music disc. It really shouldn't be difficult to balance imo.
you're videos are always nice why are you so underrated this is so interesting
I always have the bad luck effect actually, it's just a little bugged because it doesn't show the effect.
the reason stuff like luck cannot effect how many eyes are in the end portal is because if you go to spectator mode and fly enough out to where you didnt load those chunks and try and open the shipwreck chest it says this hasn't been loaded yet. but, if you do the same with a stronghold its already loaded 100% of the time. every seed has the same portal eyes but not chest loot
I found this out a couple years ago, because I think I found it in randomly in the potions creative menu.
It would be relatively easy to create a luck system that is not complicated and just works:
Lucky lvl1: The RNG picks the next random number, and another extra, and chooses the "best one" out of them
Unlucky lvl1: same but chooses the "worst one"
This way it could affect everything random ingame. Every level would increase the additional random numbers.
