I show two blind fastener solutions used in my van camper conversion, describe how they work and when they could be used and also build a DIY plus nut tool on the cheap.
I watched this a few months ago when I was planning my Van build. Now I'm working on my bed install and I'm now inserting the plus nuts. I'm glad you provided this video for a DIY tool.
I’m delighted I happened to find you’re video .. I was lost and confused 🤷♂️ now I’ve got it , thanks to you 👍⭐️🏁💯🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪 ....saving me money and time building my campervan .. brilliant.. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Good video. I just installed a number of these and I can say with 100% certainty that there is NO NEED for a special installation tool. Some of the dedicated tools actually do an inferior job. A grade 8 bolt, oversized nut and a couple washers combined with a drill or bit driver works perfectly. These things are really soft and I set most with a stainless screw. Just don't over-do it.
I struggled using other DIY crossnut installation tools that others recommended. After fiddling with them for a few hours unsuccessfully, I found your video and headed to the hardware store. I installed them in a matter of seconds. THANK YOU! Tonight’s work on the van was a success, thanks to you!
I need to work out a way to install a dozen 3/8-16 slotted, pre-bulbed Rivet Nuts for a Humvee application, will give this a shot. Both the FSI D-100-Mil-1 hydraulic tool and the 16" long handled manual tool do not engage enough threads to crush the 3/8-16 slotted, pre-bulbed Rivet Nuts.
Man I am glad I found your video. This is gonna help me with my Van build. My wife always says that I gotta go out and buy $1000 tool to do any project. I want to keep this van build in the budget because I'm using 8020 aluminum
Hey nice video, i appreciate the time taken to explain in depth. What rivnuts or cross nuts would you suggest for a car dashboard (pvc material). I need to attach a stereo panel but i need it in a way where if i have to make any future repairs i can unscrew the nuts and take the panel out. Its a diy project so i have to fix the panel on a desired place on a dashboard where i need some good grip to fix it and i find these kind of rivnuts or cross nuts appropriate for the job but i am afraid that when i apply the torque it might crack the dashboard. Any suggestions will be a big favor. Thanks.
Use nutserts. ( rivetnuts ) Get the aluminum ones for plastic attachments, and if you can reach the back, use a steel washer matched size to rivnut. That will sandwich the plastic, rather than stress the area around the hole. Last, be SUPER careful not to over tighten the nutsert. ( as soon as just snug, check it wont spin around. If won't spin, that's enough.) Plastics can be easily cracked if you use a full CRUSH.
Upon searching I really couldnt find anything for T-bolt.. it did come up as Blind bolt.. did you have to order or were these available at a local store? thanks!
I used a tool similar to this one www.amazon.com/L845-4-40-THREADED-RIVET-NUTS-ALUMINUM-STAINLESS/dp/B01CUL89LI. But look in my video library of how to do this for less than $10.
Ben Blanco The nut captures on the lock washer as you turn the bolt thereby allowing the bolt to tighten without free spinning the entire plus nut assembly.
If you're doing a van camper conversion or just attaching items to sheet metal, you'll want to use this DIY tool and fasteners.
Thanks bro ! Needed Plus Nut info. Good luck on your Van Build, I'm doing a bicycle cargo trailer.
Great tips; thank you!
I'm a tool addict, but I have to admit this hack is a good one and I'll definitely be using
I was thinking there's no way I need to spend $50, there's gotta be a way to use a bolt and my impact and it would take 2 seconds! great video!
Indeed, glad it might help.
@@MTBPlanB I'm with Kevin. Why spend $40-50 on a tool with such a limited application? Thanks for the money saving solution!

@@MTBPlanB very good video, i learned a few things. also, camera operator needs a tripod, or set camera on the bench.

OK- got it as your DIT is a great option- best video I've seen re: this topic!
Thanks!
Very informative. I been looking for a short ,strait to the point video like this on plus nuts for a while. Great job
Thanks Orlando!
Nice! Well shot and explained 😀
Thanks Cort!
Best video yet! Thank you!
I’m on Plan C 🤣🌻
Congrats and enjoy!
Just what I was looking for. Thanks
Glad it was useful info!

Life saver!!! Thank you!!

great job and great video, how high do you think the rivet sticks above the surface? Probably depending on the diameter.
Brilliant video and content I only wish the woeful focus hunting wasnt there so you can see the detail more but thanks anyway
Thanks…I’m horrible with this camera.

Blindbolt is the one I used. Ordered through US distributor online. www.blindbolt.com/the-blind-bolt/the-blind-bolt/
So helpful. Thank you. Where can I buy one of the expanding ones?
Globalfastener, Toro and Grainger are some of the distributors for t anchors.
I'm a bit confused as to why you used "lock washers" on your "tool" and not "flat washers"?
It helps keep the nut from free spinning before tightening down. If you try a flat washer, let us know how it works. Thanks
@@MTBPlanB Lock washer works better. I tried it.
The bolt in your demo is kind of long. Wouldn't it hit the exterior panel when the plus nut is fully set?
Yes.. I used shorter bolts inside the Van.
May I have the maker of the plus nut tool you use ( non diy tool)

why the larger nut, whats its purpose
Ben Blanco The nut captures on the lock washer as you turn the bolt thereby allowing the bolt to tighten without free spinning the entire plus nut assembly.
Will these work for d rings bolts?
Yes just depends on the load force.
@@MTBPlanB some of my d ring spots aren’t tapped so I thought this would slide in the holes and use these for thread purposes.
where do you get them
Which ones?
What about if you are doing woodwork
Hey George, not sure of the applications for woodwork…maybe one of the other knowledgeable folks can comment.
Great 😎 😎 keep it up 👍 👍 😃 👍 I also do mtb videos you can have a look at me.
Yes indeed, sub’d.
Why not Rivnuts?
IMHO, Plusnuts have a larger flange and expansion area that allows it to fail less often than rivnuts. I include a free spinning nut as a failure too.
Didnt find that tbolt
I used this US distributor www.blindbolt.com
Well we’ll well…. Look who just saved me $80
@ 3:17 wtf ?
