  • House One’s Jenn Largesse from House One shows how to build a very simple, but stylish porch swing.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/Subscrib....
Jenn Largesse starts by assembling a very basic porch swing frame using 2x4 and 2x6 lumber. To keep this project budget-friendly, she skips the expensive outdoor cushion, and instead uses a repurposed crib mattress with a waterproof shell. Once a few outdoor pillows are added, this seat is ready for lounging.
Cost: $100 (minus the outdoor cushion-which was a repurposed crib mattress)
    Time: 6 hours
    Difficulty: Moderate

3/4-inch rope-[amzn.to/2DusjEG] Get enough to reach from the ground to hanging height, times four
Porch swing outdoor cushion (optional), or a repurposed crib mattress [bit.ly/3jFaWjU]
Steps for building an easy, DIY porch swing:
    1. Cut the Boards to Size
    2. Drill the Pocket Holes
    3. Assemble Base Pieces
    4. Create the Front of the Seat Frame
    5. Create the Back of the Seat Frame
    6. Finish Building the Sides
    7. Support the Armrest
    8. Secure the Seat Frame to the Base
    9. Apply a Finish
    10. Add the Eye Bolts
    11. Install the Hanging Hardware
    12. Hang the Swing

best to not attach the ropes to the bottom of the seat though, can make it a tad unsteady and bofore you know it you are on the floor. better to have the back ropes secured to the middle/top of the backrest.

I'm also interested in the specs on the eyebolts used. I get that the ring inside diameter would need to accommodate the recommended 3/4" rope diameter, and should pass through the 2x4" to be secured, but would love the recommended specs (or a link to a matching product).

You might have to tie electrical tapes right below the swing hanger on the ropes like a neck tie to give the ropes less degree of freedom to move back and forth.

the eye bolts should have gone through the base, not the side of the bench. now, every time you sit on the bench, you'll elongate the bolt hole.

    • @graphguy
      @graphguy Рік тому

Exactly, I put mine through the base and had extended the dimensions for a twin mattress - 75x39. Actually on mine it was getting heavy as I used 2x4 and 2x6 so I added 2x4 stacked rails under the whole thing that extended out 4 inches on the sides and then I drilled centered holes through those and hung it to 4 points off the rafter... now it can handle 800 lbs no problem 😊

Excellent move considering physics. Supported in the noggins instead of the joists, thus relying on, again, pocket joints instead of a solid timber joist. and the base of the swing also reliant upon pocket screws as it is UNDER the rest of the swing, a re-jig of the plan to have the bottom supported by the swing and also the ropes to possibly also go through the handle to better utilisation of the pivot points (gravity vs roll) overall, a poor application of the concept. Definitely worth them seeing a poor project

    This is all around terrible.
1.) The instructions are incomplete, and missing pieces
2.) 2x4s and 2x6s are overkill. The weight of my bench is 85 lbs and i cut the over hand off the front and around the edges. Thats a lot of weight when you add it to 2+ adults at approx 160 lbs and i feel like thats low balling.
3.) As someone pointed out, the eye bolts DO get in the way of the mattress. So have fun tearing that up
4.) Hardware is not listed properly, no mention of eye hooks length and load weight; and no mention of minimum rope width (3/4in minimum)
5.) Sections are referenced in the video are called different things in instructions which makes for a very confusing build
