You and Stef are very kind pet parents….I have done the same for my old dogs. It’s sad to see them get to this point. I lost two old loves over the winter, but just got a ten year old that was turned in to the shelter after his person passed. It was a great decision for me. I needed a dog and a dog needed me.

An aging doggo is kind of similar to an aging parent. Falling, or instability on their feet, become the highest priority to a 15-yr-old doggo or 92-yr-old mother or father who lives with you. ❤

We turned our entire front lawn into a native prairie meadow. It’s on its second year this summer and has been a beautiful sea of different types of rubekia and coneflowers and other tall plants that the bees and warblers love but I don’t know the name of them. Anyway- it’s been in full bloom since may and now about 80% of the meadow has wilted/flowers have been spent. Would it make sense to cut everything down to the ground and let it rebloom before the seasons done? Or just leave everything as is (neighbors may not be too happy about our meadow now lol, but again we have so many bees and birds using it even has its wilted). We are in Greensboro,NC.

One of my best perennials was a clearance Monarda. Love plant shopping in August (typically when more go on sale here). I found some Bobo hydrangeas at half price this spring because they were slow to leaf out. I scratched all the stems in store and they were good to go. They’re doing great now they just wanted a new home 😊

Thank you so much for doing these videos Jim!
Our 12 year old chocolate lab has been having the same issue with her footing and her back legs will slide out sometimes on the hardwood, so we have also put down area rugs everywhere! I did find some little paw grippers on Amazon that seem to help. It is time consuming but you cut out the little stickers that go on the pads of their feet and they have grippers on the bottom. Just in case you need anything else for Holly- I wanted to share 😊

Regarding Firelight Tidbit hydrangea: its much smaller than White Wedding - only 2-3 feet tall and wide - and the blooms turn pink or even bright mauve towards the end of the season. So it just depends on what you're looking for in a hydrangea.
Also, I have similar light conditions as the person who has morning shade and just a few hours of afternoon sun. I've had the best success with veronica and coneflowers, as far as perennials go. For shrubs, my Annabelle hydrangea has been great, as have my Firelight Tidbits. Kaleidoscope abelia is also looking pretty good. I also rely on natives that are rated for sun or shade, like itea, inkberry holly, and red twig dogwoods.

    My question(s):
    1. Why are my Wee White hydrangea blooms turning green after first being white?
    2. Do White Weddings need more light than Limelights or about the same?

I find that for moving plants during the summer, if you can dig as much of its roots and dirt with the plant without disturbing too much of the dirt that the roots are holding onto, then it transplants nicely. The only time I see stressful transplants in the summer heat is when the plant is uprooted with barely any dirt, this makes the plant have to reestablish its root system to transport water and nutrients.

This year much better but not like when it was in the barrel. It is already finished blooming. 3 years ago it bloomed most all summer. I am hoping it will spread in the area where it is now but I'm not very encouraged after this year. Any advice?

Mom has dementia and we are having daily contention over which containers need watering and which don't. @@johnwinnett1414 good idea, actually! Or, at least it could be a partial answer. One of our outing activities is going to the garden center and she usually buys a few plants so I have to give those a fighting chance...she sticks her finger in the soil but it always feels "dry as a bone"...she doesn't seem able to understand what the soil should feel like. But, slipping in some silk flowers could help distract...I could make those her special responsibility..good idea... And, yes, dementia sucks. Sorry about your granny.

Do you know why some soils get hydrophobic? I recently planted grass for a neighbor and she had hydrophobic soil and so I amended it in winter and planted the grass late spring. It’s great now, soaking up water. Then My front flowerbed was a grass area which I gave up on cause, I figured I was doing way to much work to get a 3x15ft grass to grow. Spent a fortune on growing grass out there. When I gave up, I cultivated extra soils, compost, etc into it and it got better. So now it’s a flower bed and the shrubs and flowers are growing great. A year ago that bed was hydrophobic though. If you watered the grass there it would fill up and run into the concrete rather than soaking in. When I amended it, there were no worms in there. By the time I planted the flowers this year, we had lots of red worms and the soil was easier to dig so I can tell it’s healing. Still though, I want to know how to prevent that from happening or why it happens. It’s doesn’t make much sense to me. I’m hoping that the flower bed will continue to do well because I don’t want to try to grow grass again lol

My question is I have a Eugenia topiary that has some sever sunburn from our recent high temps here in Vegas (Zone 8b). There is still quite a bit of new growth, just a large area of burned leaves. Should I wait until cooler weather (like in Fall) before pruning or should I prune the burn out now so it can begin to grow back? Thanks again and hope you have a great week!

Extra pets for Holly! 😻 I believe I have thrips in my garden (all over). I didn't know what was doing damage because I couldn't see any pests on the leaves. Based on the type of damage I'm seeing (leaf stippling and deformed/twisted leaves) it appears it could be thrips. I do believe I also have spider mites, but those aren't as bad and I finally got my leaf hopper population down.
Is there anything I should do at this point (central Texas 8b) in July or this fall to try to combat them or wait until spring to address them? Being that they are in every area of the garden, what can I do that isn't pesticide based?

T his may be a silly question, but it's an earnest one: Where do you get your yellow? watering hoses from?
I'm plagued by kinking, live in high heat St George Utah. We have 3 Walmarts, but little else.
I haven't found a quality, light, no-kink hose in years, + the yellow color is helpful, too.

My neighbor uses exclusively fiber hoses, they’re not yellow but he loves them. They’re the only ones that don’t get damaged by our heat. I’m going to get some this year too. He says they don’t kink at all. I’m pretty sure it’s some kind of Kevlar/carbon fiber mesh on his hoses. He claims he’s never had to replace or repair one. I’ve been his neighbor for 6 years and I can attest to that. He even leaves them in full sun all year long so they definitely last.

We are in Durham, so heavy clay and are mixing compost into the hole. Also, they have great new growth on top but dead crispy leaves down low. Should we cut them back now or wait? Thanks! After moving into our new home, I spent months watching the yard to determine sun exposure before planting anything. I planted in July here in central NC. However, this winter, my eastern beds which had almost full sun in the summer, are only getting 3-4 hours of sun in the winter. This has caused my ice berg roses to get fungus. I'm going to move them to the south side of the house. Should we consider winter sun exposure when deciding what to plant??

The minute I put it in the ground the leaves start to yellow and it slowly dies. I’m give it compost (same that I use successfully on all my other plants) EDTA chelated iron which is the only iron my soil can successfully use, and I use Espoma fertilizer which ever I have plant tone, garden tone. I tried adding Espoma soil acidifier since my soil is pretty neutral. Any other hints or tips? I’m at a loss 😢.

I have a Weeping Nootka Cypress that a deer rubbed. I had to cut the branches off in the middle. The trunk is rubbed a little bit, but it is still very much alive. Will branches grow back in that section and if not what do you suggest I do?

What plants would you recommend for the bottom of a sunny slope in 8a? This area can stay pretty wet in the summer with all the thunderstorms, esp where the water flows. Looking for shorter plants/grasses that could thrive in these wet conditions.

    Hi Jim! Question for you.
Every time we buy astilbe for our 7a garden in VA, they wilt and the leaves go crispy if not watered every 2 days. They've died before and haven't come back when they go crispy like this. We are using about 75% compost and 25% original clay. We think this ought to hold a LOT of moisture. We are mulching it over. The plants are in two places - 1) a shady place with only 1 hr of direct sun in the morning and 2) a shady place with 1 hr of afternoon dappled sunlight. In both of these places the astilbe are just completely dependent on frequent waterings, requiring water even before the ground goes dry (using the finger test). Questions: 1) is this expected? all my other new plants have been more tolerant and haven't required nearly as frequent waterings and 2) after it goes through a hard wilt, should I cut back some of the foliage/dead flowers so that the plant can focus its energy on making it through the winter / what can I do to help it survive? Thanks in advance!

Donna here, if you trim the hair out from between her pads and trim her nails, she will feel better about it. We have a lab that I do this to, even though he has short hair, it grows long enough to make him slide. I just use a pair of scissors that came with our hair trimmer.

We used some grippy dog socks on our senior dog to help her walk around on our floors if Holly would tolerate them, they are great! (Our beagle was anti-ever wearing anything but did tolerate the socks when she got of a certain age). Question for you: What are your thoughts on testing for Hosta Virus X verus just tossing a suspected infected plant? I have a newly planted Fire and Ice Hosta in a normally part shade area. In fall/winter/into the spring it gets just a narrow window of afternoon sun, but then in the summer it is deep AM shade shadow from neighbors house; cooks in the sun from 12pm-3pm and then back to deep shade from the shadow of our house (so I learned today that I probably need to lean more to sun plants rather than shade plants for that area like I have been!). The hosta has a yellowing color instead of the white variation and some minor texture changes going on as the temps have warmed up (I'm in Georgia; 7B-- right down the street from the Cox Arboretum). I'm worried that maybe Hosta Virus X is what is going on; do you think it is worth moving it to a more true shade area to see if the extra sun is the issue or not worth it and it needs to be trashed?

I’ve heard you talk about pruning blooms off plants when you buy them to aid in root development. I bought a couple of White Wedding hydrangeas in full bloom, they were on sale. I went ahead and planted. I have just trimmed the blooms off but can you tell where is it best to cut back or does it matter on the type of hydrangea? I’m in 7b west TN.

I’m having an awful time with my tree hydrangea paniculata when it rains the limbs are so heavy with blooms it bends the limbs to the ground and actually bends so hard it damages the limb . My question is how can I prune this to make it stronger and shorter limbs ? And when do I prune this ?

I don’t know if they make them anymore but my dad used to buy these tree collars for his fruit trees. It was just a collar that snapped around the stem for extra support. He’d take them off during dormancy. He always used them on cherry trees. I know this isn’t what you were asking but just in case maybe it will help to look into it.

Another question. I noticed leaf scorch/early fall color on a recently planted cornus florida (afternoon sun, 7b, open area). Been through 3 of them. I was going to pull it up to return it, but it seems this one is actually producing new leaf growth. Will the tree adjust to this level of sun exposure as it matures, or should I just swap it with another species? Arborist recommended Kousa. Also, please tell me, I do not have to wait 50 years for a mature Cornus Florida. Can it grow 2 feet/year under ideal settings?

The older leaves are yellowing a bit with little Brown spots on them. I was away from home for 4 months and my husband took Care of the plants. Did he Overwatered it maybe? He watered it once a week.

I placed an order online for a Sugar Shack® - Buttonbush - Cephalanthus occidentalis and received it this week (first time ever ordering a plant online). It came as a fairly large shrub. It is in a 3 gallon container and the plant is probably 2' tall or a little better. It was very dehydrated when it arrived. (It shipped on a Thursday, I received it the following Tuesday). I watered it really well after unpacking it. It seemed to have perked up a bit but the next day it had almost completely defoliated. The stems are green and the leaves that are left on the plant look pretty good, it even has some new growth at the ends. What should I do? Cut it back? Contact the seller? Wait & see? Thanks for any advice you can give!
