After reading David Culp's, The Layered Garden I became a little obsessed with Hellebores. Every year I find a place to tuck more into the garden. Had some beautiful blooms and buds yesterday, but now covered in 9 inches of snow, was waiting for this storm before cleaning up the old foliage. I know they will be fine when the snow melts. I also start with small plugs, even in the second year they perform quite well...but the third year, wow! (zone 6b/7a - NJ). Everyone should have this plant in their garden.
Love my hellebores ... really brighten up the garden in winter, along with the edgeworthia and camellias. My favorites are the Wedding Series - beautiful, stunning color and flower variation !!!
Great content about hellebores, I definitely need more in my garden. But I missed a lot of it over by the fence because Holly was sooo sweet wandering around. 🥰 Sorry Jim! Could you repeat that?
Every time I see hellebores at the garden centers, I am drawn to them! I’ve bought a number of them and they thrive in my SoCal, zone 10a garden. Mine have been blooming since January. I’ve moved them a number of times and they like the north side of my garage near my front door. They dry very well as long as you allow them to age a bit, such as when they start producing seed pods. Thanks for the information. I had never heard of the fetid hellebore!
Great video…..I grow several hellebores, esp Orientalis, whites, yellows, pinks, reds and black incl singles and doubles. Agree with Jim that they are so special during the usually dark winter time.
I have a new rock wall and intend to plant Hellebores soon (soon as it quits snowing here in PA)....was interesting to see how that looked. I only cut leaves off my Hellebores if they are in really bad shape. I like the leaves.
I only recently discovered these while looking for deer resistant plants for my place. I'm in TX zone 8 and I bought 4 plants in early December that I planted in the ground immediately. The deer and our chickens have left them alone and they are just starting to bloom. They are doing well in an area on one side of my house shaded by 2 oak trees.
Love hellebores. Mine are just starting to bloom now with the snowdrops also they are evergreen for me zone 5 central Indiana. Agree a sticker shock to buy but so worth it after a gloomy January
Hey, I'm also in central Indiana. Just beginning my hellabore journey I only have 2 so far. I have 2 of the wedding party series. Flower girl and maid of honor so far.
Hellebores are one of my favs. Love to see winter coming to an end and my front yard is on a little hill, so we get to see the blooms easily as we pull up to the house
My garden is new to Hellebore this year! I planted 2 last fall. I'm officially OBSESSED!! I literally dug the hole and plopped in two plants. They're Gorgeous NOW ❤ Thanks for this video. I'm definitely planting many more!!
I was absolutely shocked to find some gorgeous hellebores today at a little mom and pop nursery that were only $10 for a gallon sized plant. They are full and a unique variety … I almost felt guilty not paying more! Just down the road at 2 more garden centers I found some for $25 for very scant plants. Anyway… thanks for all the info on this beautiful plant, Jim!
I love hellebores and they are evergreen in my zone 6b/7a garden. Our driveway entrance slopes upward and I have some planted at the edge of the woods along the side of the driveway which provides a good view of the nodding flowers. Some of the clumps are pretty substantial so I may try dividing them.
We had -16 Fahrenheit up here in Nelson Bc this winter and my hellebores stayed green! Thanks for the info I think I need to plant more. Hugs to Holly 🐶
Useful information especially regarding maintenance, timing to prune, fertilize. Deer resistant a plus too! I need to test my garden soil for acidity and break the clay down with soil conditioner products..I would like to find something to bloom under a great oak. These plants would be an investment for me but seem to be worth the effort and time.
Hi Jim. I have several hellebores planted in my garden & thriving beautifully. I learned the hard way to not grow them in a container unless protected from snow or winter rain. They hate soggy feet & I killed one due to root rot. Price I learned very quickly since they are not cheap. 😅
Love my hellebores…except for the year that aphids set up shop.🥴 That was almost too much. With periodic inspections and a quick spray of water if needed, I haven’t had a problem since.
I beat you to the punch this year with mulching over leaves, only because I like to get some mulch down as soon as my snow thaws, because the leaves are matted down nicely from the snowpack.
Thank you Jim for the information. I know you said they are low maintenance because you cut back old foliage and fertilize. When do you fertilize? I may have missed the timing. Holly is so darned cute!
I keep mine in a small ceramic pot and it's doing great! I did bring it into my garage when North Alabama had its ice storm a few weeks ago just in case.
They do indeed like alkaline soil and can get soooo dry. I have a ton of them in Austin TX under oak trees and they do shockingly well once established
Great video. I am in the process of making a hellebore garden and I am wondering what you do with the old leaves? Since they are poisonous I am wondering if you compost them or put them in the trash?
Hello This is the first time I have seen your channel I bought two hellebores ( ice roses) they were so beautiful and they were like that for 2 weeks I went for a week on vacation the person that should have water them dint do it went I came back the leaves were toast, I cut the burn leaves some of the plants are alive I have it inside because I live in south Florida I keep them with artificial light .Do I have a chance in keep them alive ?
You said dry soil is ok... I have an area below shady shrubs, a rhodo, boxwood, camellia, Forest Flame Pieris... it's right up against. the house so the area doesn't see a 'lot' of rain (even though I live in a rainforest area of PNW) at least in respect to the rest of the garden, but once established, would they likely be ok?
My landscaper planted several hellebores on the shady side of the house. They are nice. The foliage is appreciated. But they do have downward facing blooms and seed like crazy. Constant cleanup with these things. I am thinking about switching to the Fire & Ice variety since they are sterile.....if I'm not misinformed.
I live in zone 5-6 my helebores are blooming already but some blooms have turned black because we are dipping into the 20s at night. Will they rebound and put out more blooms later in the spring,? I covered them back up with leaves. This is my first winter with helebores.
!Glad I stole this vid ... oh. Well, glad pupper Holly does anyway. Lol. Stephany: This thumbnail photo is worthy of enlargement to 16" 18?" x 24"? And nicely framing for a lovely room in your home. For the kids, for his folks, it'd make a great gift. Superb photo, to whomever shot it. (Was it you?)
Holly really steals this video. Stick around to the end to see more of her. Thanks for watching!
She knows she has to appear for her fans! 😂
HortTube with Jim Putnam costarring Holly❤️
Thank you Jim & Steph. Another amazing & informative video 🫶🏻 @horttube
Thank you!
I have a full garden of Lenton rose and love all the babies from self seeding

I definitely bought the fertile type-I know I only bought 6 plants, but now I call myself a Hellebore Farmer!
Hellebores make me happy. I plan to add at least a couple new ones every year.
Holly didn't steal the show, it was already hers. 🤩 I'm adding more hellebores, mainly from seeds just this year. A slow but rewarding process.
I cut the foliage back on my Hellebores for the first time this year (it didn’t look bad in past years), but it really made the flowers POP!!!
I have a couple of hellebores in bloom now, dark plum color
Such a sweet Holly! I love Hellebores. Thanks for another great video. Only thing missing is seeing what they looked like when the sun warmed them up!
Love my hellebores ... really brighten up the garden in winter, along with the edgeworthia and camellias. My favorites are the Wedding Series - beautiful, stunning color and flower variation !!!

Love Holly! Happy almost Spring 2024😊
Hellebores and Holly- they’re the best !!!🙂
Great video on my absolute favorite plant. Thank you !!

Love the outtake with Holly at the end!

I chopped up those hellebore leaves and mulched the plants that the deer eat to deter them. It’s working! Less plants being eaten.
💙💚💜 Love the Holly out takes ☺️
This is great, I have some of the older, seedy helebores but I don't mind the free plants 🤗
Holly is a treasure seniors are the best we have one! Thank you for this video I will be looking for the reds!
Love hellebores. Mine are just starting to bloom now with the snowdrops also they are evergreen for me zone 5 central Indiana. Agree a sticker shock to buy but so worth it after a gloomy January

They seem to coming down in price in my area. Love them All so much. I have about six different ones in mid Michigan.❤❤❤❤❤😊
I’ve wanted to plant hellebores for a long time but I wasn’t sure if they’d grow here. I’m going to go for it.
Hellebores are one of my favs. Love to see winter coming to an end and my front yard is on a little hill, so we get to see the blooms easily as we pull up to the house
Might just have to add some hellebores to my Garden this year. One of my top favorites gardening channels, looking forward spring 😊
My garden is new to Hellebore this year! I planted 2 last fall. I'm officially OBSESSED!!
I literally dug the hole and plopped in two plants. They're Gorgeous NOW ❤
Thanks for this video. I'm definitely planting many more!!
Just visited Baker Arboretum in Bowling Green KY and the hellebores were absolutely beautiful!!!!
❤Holly❤
How we love you, Holly! At 15, you look so good! You go, girl!❤❤❤
Going to Pine Knott is such a treat! Thanks for introducing us to them!
Same!
Thank you! I have planted quite a few but needed the information you provided. Definitely my fave plant here in middle Tn.
You need to frame that cute picture of you and Holly with the hellebore

Hi Miss Glam girl Holly! Learning a lot.
I’m having fun over here Jim 😊thank you
I am also in zone 7b 8a. I just bought Hellebores. Can I plant them now?
Holly definitely stole the show @ the end!
Jim as always such great information! Love your absolute passion.
Love my hellebores…except for the year that aphids set up shop.🥴 That was almost too much. With periodic inspections and a quick spray of water if needed, I haven’t had a problem since.
Love the thumbnail, Jim….SMILE MORE!
Hellebores are one of my favorites! Great video Jim!!!
Love them ,old varieties and new and yes mine are planted under a Japanese Maple,😂 but they Well 🌿🍃
I beat you to the punch this year with mulching over leaves, only because I like to get some mulch down as soon as my snow thaws, because the leaves are matted down nicely from the snowpack.
Love seeing Hollie! Great video!
Beautiful plants!
Thank you for sharing all your information. Love your Fur Baby. ☺️
love little Holly!
❤hello everyone, gardeners friends, happy gardening. ❤😅
Hellebore also invasive in the South east. Be very sure it doesn't stray or consider other native options.
Thank you Jim for the information. I know you said they are low maintenance because you cut back old foliage and fertilize. When do you fertilize? I may have missed the timing. Holly is so darned cute!
Pine Knot Hellebore Festival should be coming up this month.
Just bought my first Hellebore this winter..called Glenda. Beautiful blooms right now. Thank you for sharing this. Can I keep it in a pot?
I keep mine in a small ceramic pot and it's doing great! I did bring it into my garage when North Alabama had its ice storm a few weeks ago just in case.
I have a hellebores called bears foot and I actually like the foliage better than the flower and it is green / maroonish all winter
Once the seed pods have developed, I pop them out and leave the sepals for an incredibly long “blooming” period. 🌸🐝
They do indeed like alkaline soil and can get soooo dry. I have a ton of them in Austin TX under oak trees and they do shockingly well once established

Holly is such a comedian 😂💕
Hello
This is the first time I have seen your channel

Jim, what do you think about seeding microclover here in Durham, NC ZONE 8A?
I would like to find good ones that can tolerate and do well in full sun in zone 6.
What variety is the most aggressive in spreading as a dry shade ground cover? Is it the Fetid and do they spread quickly?
The deer have eaten my Hellebores and my new Rhododendrons. I live in Ohio and it was a mild winter. Will they grow back?
My landscaper planted several hellebores on the shady side of the house. They are nice. The foliage is appreciated. But they do have downward facing blooms and seed like crazy. Constant cleanup with these things. I am thinking about switching to the Fire & Ice variety since they are sterile.....if I'm not misinformed.

Still have mid 20 nights - should I keep the old foliage on ? Zone 5b , see some buds poking out of ground now
I love my hellebores, but they have taken over my garden. I can never seem to cut them before they throw their seed! I will try to do better.
!Glad I stole this vid ... oh. Well, glad pupper Holly does anyway. Lol.
Stephany: This thumbnail photo is worthy of enlargement to 16" 18?" x 24"?

Thanks!!
I think all the Ranuncuilds are poisonous. Love my Hellebores. Is this video from North Carolina? 10:02
What is the green leaf plant around 7:10?
People can collect the seeds that arent sterile and offer them for trade. Just a thought.
What about aphids?
Hella hellebores.
🙋
The 2 hellebores I planted last spring went through a couple -5f nights a few weeks ago unfazed with flower buds up 3inches
Holly says.. I thought you said Hollybores!!!! Hollybores!
Something came through and ate all the blooms of my hellebores.... squirrels or rabbits?.?
💙👍🏻💙
There is no such thing as “ Lenton roses”. It is “Lenten roses”, because they bloom during 5he season of Lent, in early spring!
Dry conditions once they’re established? ❄️🫠💚🙃
Yes
Thanks Jim. I can’t grow Hellebores not sure why, I always end up killing them. I’m not sure if I want to try them again, they can be pricey. ❄️🫠💚🙃
