Well that was annoying, too much work, and now we're just gonna replace it all.... I guess it still made for good video content.
Unfortunately that's how it is sometimes
jobs liek that are a bit annoying but what can you do
A blue cup moment..😅
A blue cup moment indeed! LoL
@@DuckmanCycles lol enjoy brother 😁
Gosh Duckman you are a ball of energy today .😆🤣
I have more fun than most.... lol
Got to agree with you Duckman. Nice looking beetle. Looks like the body and paint is great. You are having great weather for Ducks, again.
Ducks don't even like this weather though LOL.... the spoiled turds come running back inside when it rains! 🤣🤣🤣👍🏻🦆💩
When I decided after traveling to loads of VW shows in the 80's which way I wanted to build MY 72 Super Beetle, It was the Webber 2 barrel Bug Spray, Isky Dune Buggy Cam, High lift Rockers, High press oil relief springs w/high flow oil pump, and a few misc things including a mid quiet set of headers. Always easy to work on and fine tune, ran terriffic, great gas mileage. I estimated about 100-120 HP. And no oil leaks using the best block sealers available. Never liked those Dellortos as they were way too expensive for the everyday driver.
Yeah the Delortos were expensive, they're even still expensive now.... if you can find them! The progressive kit seems to be a cheap way to upgrade the carburetor, but anytime I find one, and this is ESPECIALLY TRUE ON A BUS... they run like crap and have lots of problems. But at least on a Beetle you can get a preheated manifold, that makes a pretty big difference.
Well done again Duckman. Good stuff.
Thanks much, when it gets done raining around here we're going to replace all of this carb nonsense.
Remembering that the maximum length of thread for maximum strength is the diameter of the thread major diameter so too long a bolt is not required just a sign of someone who didn’t know how to modify the bolts , good attention to detail on such a beautiful bug . Thank You again for sharing the alumaweld solution !
I don't know what the previous guy did at all. His carb kit may have had the wrong bolts, or maybe he lost them. Uncertain, but he surely made a mess out of this. Thanks much, the owner just pinged me seconds ago with their new carb kit.
I was really hoping to see your neighbor vacuuming his yard!😂😂
The video didn't come out well, lots of vines and leaves between us... and it was hard to get the right angle without him seeing me recording... but the next day his wife was out there doing it again.
Still a good in-depth video, tks for sharing.
Thank you! Glad I got this one running so much better in recent video!
I like your indoor vids , they have a warm cozy feeling with no out door noises .
Yeah I can't wait till I have my shop space together, seens like I've been talking about it forever
It'll happen soon
I am sure hoping so! Just need economy to turn around. If it ever does!
I’ve had the 11 mm space savers for my manifolds for almost 19 years. They’re a life saver as well. And even with them it is not an easy job; you have to turn into a contortionist 🤣😂. Btw, pepper spray is a good idea also, even if you carry. The middle ground between a slap on the face and having to use your tool.
They're awesome, even on a stock installation. But with dual carbs they almost become a necessity! Thanks man! 😁👍🦆💩
Great video, maybe next time try 11mm swivel socket or 11mm crows foot. Hate seeing you struggle like that.
Nope and nope, no fit! Just a half-length wrench works really good. I only have 1 though, and its 12mm, for the OTHER downsized nuts.. 11mms are so much better though. I need to get one.
There is M8 nut with 10mm head. 12:9 hardning. You can find then in electric conecting cabins. They build more in length
There sure is! But the go-to is the easy-to-find via regular VW channels 11mm units that seem to work just fine. I can send the customer a link, they order, and presto its here. These extra tall (double height), and are selected for ease of installation. If there was a 10mm like these, I'd be all over them!
Great video! That vice handle has had some cheaters on it. Good for a HF vice.
That Harbor Freight vise is so cheap... I bent the bar by hand.... seriously! I used some tooling to get it straight only for it to knot itself up again.... so it's never been right. I have a 100-year-old vise underneath the workbench that I really need to replace it with. 😁👍🏻🦆💩
G'day,
Lord Duckman.
The colour of this bug is awesome. The hole setup looks good.
I'm running dual 40's and I had endless problems with my linkage setup. Fixed it by installing a Gene Berg linkage. The only problem is they cost the earth.
Q. When the last of the trees go byby do you plan to roof any of that area in. Think of the potential. Possibly no more working in the driveway.
So thanks for sharing man. I always love your videos. ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
Thanks Kevin, this car is definitely gorgeous. But as I've said in many previous videos, I'm not staying at this house so doing more upgrades to the building on this property doesn't make any sense. The roof was needed to satisfy the insurance company, and I only got the solar because it was part of a very attractive roofing contract which made a lot of sense. But I can take the solar with me, so that's the goal... TO MOVE!
@DuckmanCycles how expensive is the solar. Here in Australia a decent kit with batteries costs around $16k aus and up.
Depends on the size of the system, cost varies A LOT. But I got it financed and its about the same as my power bill was monthly after my solar credits. So that helps!
I've replaced my engine side trays twice now. The first time, before I tore my car apart I think I may have gotten the wrong year trays, either that or I placed them too high because the manifolds wore down against them. This time around, I learned my lesson, as with so many things on these cars, you only do it wrong once.
I'll be making a new set of custom ones for Triple-E. The stock ones don't fit right with my dual carbs. I figure this go around I can also make them removable, too. 😁👍🏻🦆💩
i did wonder why you werent putting the carb on the intake manifold glad you explained it though lol. You know a good mechanic when he can work blind and backwards! great job on those carburettor holes id have melted the carb if it was me lol. It was interesting you had problems with getting the wrenches on I was watching mustie1 the other day he was working on a snowski thing (I dunno what you call them lol) he had a similar issue on the carburettor one nut was a pain to get at ended up bending and twisting a sacrificial wrench......coincidence lol. always nice to have several of the same type of tool especially like you found the ones you have are indexed slightly differently.
you know what the owner could do with those things shimmying on the bar they could put hose clamps on either side to stop it moving. bit of a bodge job and it would look shit I know but it would probably work!
There was little I could do to those arms for a permanent fix, see.... they were loose, they would, over time, spin on the hex bar for being so loose, I'd weld them on there, but they do need to be adjustable to balance the carbs out properly. So anyway, replacement is required to make it work right, no more doinking around with stupid BS. 😁👍🦆💩 And a 3 inch wrench would work fine, I just don't have one that size.
I agree duck man I think that Volkswagen is gorgeous I cannot believe they replace those carburetors that just doesn't make sense
Well it seems like everything about the setup just keeps having problems, so customer opted for all new BETTER stuff. It was due to my recommendation, I can keep fighting with the garbage or we can just make it right with the right stuff. 😁👍🏻🦆💩
I always get it right the first time, or the second or third first time, but still the first time.
Always eventually.... meanwhile tear down and redo... repeatedly. LoL!

Thanks Duckman p85 9 for myself
Usually a p365 over here, I can hide it in my big hand and nobody even knows I've got it LOL
From the video it looks like a nice car
That car is really awesome, lots of small problems, but no rust and I guess that's really what's important!
nice job.
Thanks always my friend!
Wow they do wiggle. When you were starting it they looked like they buckled together too.
Quite a nuisance, annoyed, but glad, to be replacing this all!
i have 90 degrees open ended wreches for just that kind of nut/carb so they probably still exist somewhere
Just a half-length wrench would really work great, too. I only have 1 though, and its 12mm, for the other downsized nuts.. 11mms are so much better though.
Well at least you didn't head bang the wall after all your efforts. Maybe the owner will give you the carbs for your hoard? That linkage looked like a crappy design 💩good job L.D.!
The carbs will be going in the trash bin, I will be pilfering bits from them first hehehe!
I bet you won't tell us what's in the blue cup duck man LOL
You've already lost that bet, because I talk about what I put in it all the time LOL! 😁👍🏻🦆💩
I like the older fenders and lights. Paint is nice. Hopefully you show the interior on one of the videos. Do you think you'll get more of a stock bug to be able to drive it without worrying about it to much? Leaving it out. Good video Lord Duckman 🦆. Noel
Thanks, I've had several videos that included the interior, and you commented on them, too! I don't understand the question, but thanks! 😁👍🦆💩
@DuckmanCycles I didn't remember seeing the interior. Lol. Bad memory. What I was asking was do you wish you had anot her bug that isn't so custom to be more of a daily driver? Other than Ruby.
@@noelamick2015 I had one... the white Beetle I sold. It was a very mild custom, mostly fitted with older stuff that made it look like a 68, otherwise it was mostly stock. You can find videos over here on my channel, the 1973 Beetle. It got sold to @Vochowagens few years ago, so you can find even more recent videos of it on his channel!
@DuckmanCycles I think I saw the video of you talking it to his house. And again at a tech session. I haven't seen you ever working on your fastback at any tech sessions. Probably because you are busy filming and hoping to see the pizza girl. Lol.
I never work on my Fastback at Tech Sessions.... every day is a tech session at my own house... so proper Tech Session day is my day to volunteer to help others and to give back to the community. Lately its just been a lot of perverted jokes on camera, but hey, there is an audience for that, too!
used pop can for shim
That'd be great, sloppy, it would get you home, but that's not the correct way to fix it and make it reliable. 🤣👍🏻🦆💩
This brings up a good question. How do you get the needle and seat to not stick? Yes, I know you wacked the side of the carb to get it to release the needle, but there must be a way to get it to be more reliable. I have the issue of my needle sticking closed, not open. I've polished the needle with felt, polish and a dremel which seems to be working for about three weeks now. I never had that problem when using a single carb - only with dual carbs. Any ideas/solutions you guys have come across?
It was never unreliable, it just stuck somehow when I assembled it. Been fine since. But check your float height and make sure it's not wrong. If you still continue to have issues then replace the float valves completely. Also while not mentioned, make sure you have the correct fuel pump and not something delivering too much pressure. Hope that helps!
I freak'n L O V E BRM's 👊
Oh yazzzzz 😁👍🦆💩
Stupid question the manifolds looks short? Shouldnt bug manifolda be a bit taller? Im looking on doing the same as i have a set of del orto and german spec carb.
You might be surprised to know that these manifolds actually are the tall ones for these carburetors. The short manifold is actually about an inch or so shorter than these. I'll do a comparison when I do the install of the new carbs next week, the new kit came with the shorties. 😁👍🏻🦆💩
What are those small nuts called and where do you get them
They are 11mm nuts, and you can always find links to them in the video description! Click click! I made it easy! 😁👍🦆💩
Webber progressives. Yuck. Had them on a couple of non-VW cars and had no end of trouble with them. Dellortos are great (but pricey). I'm weird. I like SU carbs. Run a single SU on my bug and have a rare twin SU setup in restoration which will go on the car eventually. Thanks for the vid Duckie :)
Progressive carburetors are the worst hack on a Volkswagen engine.... only behind a 009 distributor, of course! LoL
@@DuckmanCycles Sadly I do have a 009 on my engine. It works OK with the SU (no flat spot) but there's an SVDA in my future :)
@@martinharris5017 Nooooooooo! 😭😭😭😭 :: dies ::
@@DuckmanCycles Sorry, I'm beyond salvation :)
@@martinharris5017 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video…
Thanks! Wish everything worked properly when done!
I am wondering how different an airplane Lycomings 4 cylinder air-cooled engine is compared to a VW 4 cylinder air-cooled engine? 🤔 They look very similar. That question sparked my mind after you mention air cooled engine, Glenn. Any answer? Curious minds want to know? I always wanted to see a carburator rebuild. Learn'in stuff!
They're quite different, but I'd love to stuff one in a VW and see how much fun we can have with it. Meanwhile, we're fixing (or trying to) Weber ICT carbs today!
I finnish my comment after your comment. Sorry.
LoL! That happens a lot around here!
