I bought a gaming VA monitor from MSI 3 years ago. It said 1ms response time and wasnt that cheap so i thought i was getting something good. The blur was so annoying. Im glad you mentioned Hades because thats one of the game i played on it and i couldnt believe how bad it was. Since then i have always research what monitor to buy and i settled for an IPS panel and ghosting is completely unnoticeable if thats there at all. The colours are so vivid and it makes everything better too. Good video, i liked the examples.
The first video I've come across in my search for a ghosting solution that was actually helpful in helping understand what is happening and why. Thank you, sir
Always knew what was the definition of ghosting and inverse ghosting but never saw the actual effect of it shown in such a detailed and practical manner. Great video as usual man.
Thank you so much for the clear and informative explanation of ghosting issue in monitors. You helped me to reach a conclusion: "I don't care about ghosting at all"
This is easily the best video on the subject thanks to clear explanation and a lot of examples. It will definitely come in hand when choosing my next monitor
I've watched so many video reviews of electronic products and I am sure this is the best, details, understandable with perfect example of the subject. Well freaking done!
great video!! now I understand why all the 4k test videos I see on YT when I type "4k display demo" in the search box are moving very slowly, this allows pixels to get the right color and you aren't noticing ghosting phenomenon
there's an interesting observation also, I have the ViewSonic vx2428j, it has a 1 ms response time (GTG) but when enabling the ultra-fast mode, a white ghosting appears, but the catch is that this only occurs in the user defined colors, meaning if all red, green, and blue are set to 100'% brightness, the issue will show, that's different from using the built in modes, like bluish, or native, when using them i notice that the brightness goes down a bit and the ghosting disappears completely when enabling the ultra-fast mode, it's interesting.
I just bought a very cheap IPS for under 70 USD! It's 24 inch 1080p with 180Hz. I tried all the ghosting tests and motion blur tests in the UFO test and I don't see bad artifacts in the monitor. It's set to extreme overdrive but I don't see any inverse ghosting. A good buy in my book. The brand is ELSA but I think it's a sub brand of Nvision. I just can't believe how cheap I got this.
something I would like to mention, the UFO ghost test is representative of both monitor ghosting and interpreted ghosting (ghosting you see from lower refresh rates), not interpreted ghosting of a camera. By that, I mean that the camera has to match speed with the UFO and follow it in order for you to see the amount of ghosting you would see when gaming or tracking a moving object. If you compared both monitors while tracking the moving UFO, we would see a large difference in motion clarity, especially dark level transitions
Spent about 4 days of non stop reading, watching and digging forums about ghosting/smearing on VA -- since I want to get 27 2k curved monitor, and set my eyes on Gigabyte G27QC. Some mention it, some ignore it, some say it is there, but only matter if you care about it (great answer, indeed...). Not sure how GAMING monitor with smearing can have Gaming at 8.2 on Rtings... No idea how it works, really. The sad thing is - I just have to find some huge store with working monitors, and creep around, comparing ISP with VA, until I just find what I like.
I never knew VA, IPS and TN until I know now, so my monitor 240hz VA, I noticed different on video probably he puts slomo on video to show very difference
I run my VA panel Overdrive for almost 3 years, it's broken now XD. Ghosting in VA is really noticeable on CoD games or much more darker games you can really notice it. Or even moving the mouse cursor on darker ends of the monitor you can definitely see it. I mistakenly bought a VA panel instead of IPS its the biggest disappointment I got.
Really good video, I’ve been dealing with inverse ghosting for 2 years on my Samsung monitor and it’s reeeaaallllly annoying. I’m going to be looking out for more of this stuff now because of this thank you
Thank you so much! This makes it very clear unlike other reviews that barely mention Ghosting. Could you please recommend a 32inch qhd monitor that doesn't have this issue while being freesync, preferably over 120hz.
Holly biscuits thank you for this video. In csgo its very prominent on the map cache and dust2 I always saw the white highlights and I couldn't figure out why it was happening and it hurts my eyes. Since day one with my monitors I always turn on super fast response time but I'll try the advanced now and hopefully it will be better, Always thought it was my settings in games lol
Thanks! I learned a lot from this. How do hertz come into play with all this? Gaming vise. Are they just important? Less important? Edit: I have an old Asus VS247 (which advertises 2ms GTG), and gaming is REALLY painful. Can't see much in shooters, either I'm moving the camera fast or the targets are fast, so all I see is a blur. And games similar to the ufo test, are painful to look at. Especially when its the background that's moving fast, while the player/target is stationary. I only bared to play one game like that a bit, and I had to keep my eyes off screen and just look through my peripheral vision, so the blur doesn't hurt my eyes. And if both player and target are moving I can hardly tell them apart. xD
Hz and framerate measure the same thing(e.g. 60Hz = 60fps). There's 2 parts to framerate- the #of frames your computer can produce each second, and the # of frames your monitor can display each second. For fast paced games like shooters, I value framerate above everything. This means I would play games in potato quality (low graphics, 720p) just so I can max out the monitor's framerate. Ccasual games like farmville, Hz doesn't matter as much. Your monitor seems pretty old (2012?). Maybe it's time to look at buying a new one? :)
@@ReviewsForLifeYT Gottcha! Yeah makes sense. Did you happen to test the 24" MISURA MM24DFA? With 200Hz and a curved screen it seems like to good to be true for the price. I also see videos on UA-cam how to fix ghosting, is this possible or is it technically inherent and therefore a no-go?
I'm so disappointed I had to see the horrible effects of ghosting the hard way on a new monitor I bought recently. The effect on Hades is exactly, if not worse than when I'm playing XCOM2. It's unbearable. I had to return and I'm sticking with an IPS display until VA technology can be on par.
I's a paradox but the VA panel was better in 2014 than now. I bought a VA monitor to replace my old one: refund, I've never see so many ghosting in my life !
They are already on par. The new Samsung Odyssey G7 VA panel is outright one of the best panel available even when compared to high end IPS. You get to enjoy high contrast of VA without the usual ghosting and long response time issue (even better than many high end IPS out there). Unfortunately they only made it 27" 1440p as of now, no other monitors use the same panel yet and I don't understand why

Hey can you make a video on CRT monitors? they're getting a surge, many say the quality is better than any tn or IPS panel of this decade, high end crt being those Samsung Triton monitors
That's a tough ask- modern video cards don't support VGA, and I'm not aware of any modern high refresh rate CRT monitors. Not saying it can't be done- it's just hard to find resources. If you have recommendations, I'm all ears
@@UnknownUnknown-cd4hh Trust me , after using CRT monitor the all flat panel type monitors become a scrap. CRT always gives the best performance for everything. Gaming, cad drawing.
Problem is the quality of VA panel monitor. I mean, let's look at high quality IPS vs VA panel. You know who wins? Check out hardware unboxed charts (best monitor reviewer ever). Hint: Samsung Odyssey G7 (VA panel) beats all of the IPS / Nano-IPS monitors in terms of response times, therefore you won't see any ghosting or smearing as you have shown on the video.

Thanks for the video. Before this video I was sure that all IPS monitors have a good response time. Even cheap office Lenovo models are really good. Much better than "gaming" LG 32GK65B-B 144Hz monitor. Problem is mostly not noticeable in modern games (like Cyberpunk 2077), but in games on older engines (like Black Mesa) it is seen immediately. Mostly on areas like floor grilles, which turn into a mess as soon as character move.
I was playing black mesa for the first time not that long ago and the first area has the floor grilles it completely threw me off playing the game because it gave me a headache every time I moved.

Though i have a question im running it on HDMI 144hz is supported, should i consider buying display cable? Will it help further more?
Hey! Glad you found good settings that work. No need for display cable if HDMI is working; they do the same thing (which is to get video from pc to monitor)
@@ReviewsForLifeYT Yes you're right. But wasn't able to enable G-Sync on it via HDMI as i've seen some youtubers having it on the same monitor. The problem with VA is often the horrendous viewing angles, nothing more annoying than seeing the colors shift all around edges of your perception because VA has to be viewed straight on to get the most accurate colors, honestly very disorienting.

You could always use a HDMI to VGA Adapter for CRT Monitors.
Works like a charm on a 120hz CRT
@@Frank_Pods Even now as second hand it's a pretty good price. I've bought a brand new one for 350 euros. That was a steal. But the next price in my country is 375 euros. That's not too bad either. Prices are for the 27inch version. With second hand I've seen them around 300 euros. Mostly 300 though.
@sn.k7811 Exactly. But it doesn't worth it tbh.
Just purchased a expensive samsung neo g8 and the ghosting is really bad. I will have to return it unfortunatelly.
Thanks alott, i got the vx2705-2kp-mhd for very very cheap price. And was facing a huge problem with ghosting until i tweaked the settings and also changed to Advanced from Ultra fast and it looks amazing now. Thanks alot.
Turns out you need a DP cable in order to get the option in your Nvidia Control Panel settings. As the Monitor has Freesync Premium you can turn on G-Sync with DP cable even if the Monitor isnt G-Sync compatible. And it works perfectly 😊
Hi, what setting you used to get rid of ghosting on vx2705?
@@fedornabokov9168 Set contrast to around 50-55. Enabled G-Sync and Overdrive mode or whatever it's called to medium not high in monitor settings. And i also switched to Display Cable i guess my HDMI cable was slow i dont know. But i changed these settings and ghosting is barely even noticeable in ufo test. No ghosting in game. Remember some games do show ghosting if you apply some in game graphics like dlss or fsr. First apply these and test on ufo test. If its visible in few game you need to change some of your graphic settings
@@osamaanwar90 Thank you, mate. This is what I have now ua-cam.com/video/uTX3xyNBrEQ/v-deo.html Contrast 70, response time set to ultra (not medium). To be honest this looks better than in 2021 tests on youtube and I do not see any overshoot here. May be new monitors as I bought it 2 weeks ago are different?
Finally my game doesn’t look bad I thought my monitor was bad 😂
i just discover this effect from review on cheap curve 200hz monitor that cost only 100$ usd. lol i think i just happy with my 75hz and not having this kind of problem.
Every monitor review on UA-cam or written should link to this video so people know what the hell they're talking about
we watching in 144p:
nice!
Can you recommended for me a gaming monitor 144hz curved 24 inch please ?
I was thinking to buy this one
ASUS TUF 23.6 VG24VQ Curved Monitor
How do you not have more subs?
man pleasssse help me 😢😢
my view sonic screen looks bad with alot of ghosting its a VA screen
is it bad i can’t really notice the difference
even under 1 ms you get a ghosting until the display use motion interpolation
The problem with VA is often the horrendous viewing angles, nothing more annoying than seeing the colors shift all around edges of your perception because VA has to be viewed straight on to get the most accurate colors, honestly very disorienting.
Try to play gunz the duel.. the ghosting is very noticeable. Since the game is fast pace
The IPS looks much worse in your example with white text on black background. the white letters are flickering like crazy and would have given me a migraine with extended use
So the problem isn't from my gpu?
incredible video
VA panel for movies and shows and non fast paced games, IPS panel for pure gaming, why not have both in a dual monitor setup? Thats the win win
How can i solve this? I have an Asus vg279q1r and it does the inverse ghosting it’s so annoying. I just bought it, should I return it??
try a slower overdrive mode, like "normal". Otherwise, nothing you can really do but buy a better monitor.
My G5 32" is 10 times worse than the 32" being used in this video, trust me.
@@michalthekind whats funnier is, “MBR” is literally the same as “Fastest”, just with lowest brightness 😂😂😂 should’ve bought a cheaper, but better, 24 - 27” monitor… or, just gotten the G7. 😅
@@michalthekind Imagine “down-grading” to a 1080p, 24” monitor because Samsungs flagship “budget” monitor is literally THE WORST… funny thing is, probably more than half 1080p, 24 - 27” are 100x better than G5
@@cubiversewastaken I have the g7 240 2k and it isnt any better, but it is decent, i like it tbh.
VA panel: Moving the mouse cursor leaves a trail
my monitor makes noises if i open the test page WTF (Coils beep i think)
I had to refund my Va panel response time was horrible, it worked at 165hz, but never felt smooth, it looked like 80-100hz
can this be noticed while watching movie?
I've been using a 200 nit AOC monitor 60hz from 2011 till today 😂 and reached 110k~ on gridshot ultimate(aimlabs) upgrading will be huge but i really dont think 0.5% of a difference in same budget range should matter, but hey, adds to knowledge
Now i understand
thanks a lot
So ghosting isn't bad if you play with motion blur.
motion blurr aren't a solution 😅
yea its not the solution here. the ghosting makes your game feels like motion blur on even its off
watching this as I try to fix the ghosting on my viewsonic monitor lmao
okay hear me out
U might not be as stupid as I am
But I reset my pc like a week ago and I never installed nvidia base driver I just got the game ready from geforce experience
You would think windows would just do monitors hz but .
today I realized I was on 60 hz on a 144hz monitor and that was causing all the ghosting ..
So just letting you know JUST IN CASE!
OH SO THATS WHY MY MONITOR HAS TERIBLE GHOSTING TOO LOL THANKS YOURE NOT THE ONLY ONE STUPID HERE. its better now lolll
I bought a 165hz Sceptre monitor and the ghosting was terrible. My old monitor at 60hz actually looked better..
just bought a va panel, mine has no ghosting or inverse ghosting almost as smooth as my 240hz tn benq xl2540k not quite there yet but WHAT I DIDNT EXPECT it fucking looks like shit, i bought it thinking it would have better colors it really doesn't and also it looks blurry as shit for what ever reason, viewing angles are even worse than my TN even though va panels are much faster DONT BUY ONE THEY LOOK LIKE SHIT, ips is truly superior even though the contrast ratio sucks, VA colors suck contrast ratio is better but it looks blurry[test looks blurry etc] even with sharpness turned up and washed out.
