  • Episode II is here! Welcome to the second episode of my mini series review of my Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series touring build that I've completed over the past 4 years. This episode focuses on the 12v system designed specifically for touring and overland use.

    Good vid Troy, plenty of information without being to technical for guys like me. I will certainly look at lithium next time. The biggest issue i had when i went to the cape was battery power or lack of it, looks like you've solved my problem for the next cape trip!!

    Great video Troy, have a 100 series and wondering which way to go with the battery set up, interesting hearing the different set ups you have been through, and after watching this seems your latest system is the way to go. Reading the DCS material it does say not to hook the inverter up through the Victron Battery saver if its more than 300 amps, so would have to have a different circuit for that.

    Hey Troy I’m currently doing a build of our 2011 gxl 200 and battery life and usable power are certainly on my radar.
    Like u I’ve also used the traditional style bcdc and agm in my previous gu td42 which worked great but power reductions on extended stays was a right pain in the ring.
    I’m in mackay and I’m definitely getting onto dcs today to sort out pricing etc.
    Worst thing is I only replaced the two starting batteries on my model with twin 780cca delcors but that’s ok.
    Definitely want solar backup and reliable usable battery power.
    We want to run our evakool 70 litre dual zone fr/frz and maybe a few lights so ur type of setup would work for us.

      Hey Steve - thanks for commenting! Sounds like you are in the same boat as I was. The DCS batteries are an awesome choice mate can't recommend them highly enough. I have used the Victron Smart Solar unit and I can't recommend that highly enough either - the fact that the entire system is bluetooth enabled and you can just open the app on your smartphone to see what the solar is doing or what the batteries are doing is awesome. I'm not sure if its the fact the lithium batteries have a lower resistance, or that the Victron solar regulator is more efficient, but I'm also finding that my same old 160w solar panel really pumps the power into these batteries so really can't recommend this combination enough!

    Be interested to see how this DCS batteries are now performing under the bonnet...I installed a 2 x 75Ah DCS setup in my 100, and then transferred it to my 200, and now 3 1/2 years down the track, (which is 6 months out of the 3 year under bonnet warranty period) they are down to 65% capacity. It will be cheaper for me to revert to lead acid under the bonnet and put a lithium house battery in the rear....than to replace the lithium like for like. Very unhappy with the outcome.

      Sorry to hear about this! Did you try speaking to DCS even though it was out of warranty? I sold the 200 about 3 years ago and the new owner has said he did replace one DCS battery under warranty in the bonnet after about a year. I have a few mates that have them under their bonnets still with no issues.

    Nice video Troy. thanks. I actually stopped into DCS last week while visiting Brisbane and had a nice chat with Paul @ DCS - he was very helpful. He suggested exactly the same setup for my 200 series, which I will do. I plan to pull out both my batteries (crank + AGM Aux) obviously, my Redarc 25amp DC-DC charger and it's 50amp Anderson plug for solar input, my battery isolation switch and relay (which joins the batteries together via momentary switch on the drivers dash should the crank battery ever be too low) plus all my cabling and start again so it is neat and tidy. Therefore a video or photos of your under bonnet wiring and placement of Victron gear would be helpful if you have any? thanks!

    great video and true to life how we change things in generations!. I have not moved to lithium but would like to do much the same with 2 x DCS under the bonnet.

    So does the batterys bms bump up the voltage from the minimum 13.2v from the temperature compensating alternator in the cruiser to 14.6v to charge the battery to 100%. And would it do the same for a smart alternator vehicle that could go down to 12.5v

      Hi Don - as far as I’m aware yes. My voltage gauge in the car shows when I’m driving that the battery voltage is sitting around 13.8v.

    Hey Troy, Great video. 3 years has past since you posted this video. How have the two lithiums performed over the longer term?

      Hey Deano! I sold the 200 about a year after I made these videos to a friend. About 12 months after I sold it he had an issue with one battery that DCS covered under warranty. The battery was still working fine but I believe the bluetooth function wasn't working so it wasn't showing up in the app correctly. I know DCS have released even better batteries since these ones again and it's definitely a mod that I would highly recommend.

      Hey Gavin - literally just a cheap one from Supercheap Auto. I think Ridge Rider? Haven’t had any issues and still going strong after a few years on the roof now, especially when coupled with the Victron MPPT Smart Solar regulator!

    Hey mate, do lithium batteries degrade under the bonnet? I thought they had to be out of the temp?

      Hey mate - it's a bit of a misconception. There are a heap of different lithium cell types, but the Deep Cycle Systems batteries are engineered and warranted for under the bonnet use.     Hi Troy, I hear a lot about lithium batteries not being suited to under bonnet use due to heat. Obviously, you have not experienced any issues. How long have you had your current setup?

      Thanks for the query Mark. There are a HEAP of different types of Lithium batteries - LiFePO4 batteries are actually much better under the bonnet than an AGM and have a much wider, safer and robust operating temperature range when compared to other traditional style deep cycle batteries. The DCS batteries I have also have a highly engineered internal BMS (battery management system) that has over and under temperature protection to protect the cells from damage. The team at DCS are so confident that they warrant their batteries under the bonnet of your car. I've only had mine for a couple of months, but haven't had a single issue to date. I personally know of other people who have had DCS batteries for over 2 years without issue which was a big deciding factor for me in getting these.     So both batteries are under bonnet?
    More or less than $2k?

      Hey Tim - It's just a little over $2k to do this. If you compared it with a setup using a high end DCDC charger, with a really good AGM - installed I think most places will sting you between $1000-$1500 to do this. So if you can afford to wait and save that extra money, you get a massive benefit in terms of useable amp hours, higher discharge current, a lot less weight, longer life time and massively higher rate of charge. I personally wished now that I had waited and saved the extra dollars rather than going down the AGM and DCDC route. There's also plenty of options with Deep Cycle Systems - they can do a single lithium battery as a secondary battery, they also have options for smaller twin lithium battery setups (about twice the useable amp hours of an AGM). Going down this road will get you a lithium setup for under $2k pretty easily. I went for the larger twin 100ah batteries which gives me around three times the useable amp hours of an under the bonnet AGM.

    Tesla don't use LiFePO4 - they use a totally different chemistry for their battery packs. Most tesla models still have separate AGM battery for 12V systems.

      Thanks for the comment. When I filmed this video I did triple check and I believe that the Model 3 made in the Chinese factory does use LiFePO4 - where as the other models use different lithium chemistry’s. I could be wrong as it may have changed again since filming?

      @@TroyStaines Looks like your right for the MIC models with CATL battery packs. I think those sold in OZ to date are made in Fremont with Panasonic batteries. Looks like they'll switch to a new battery design for the Texas build cybertrucks. Cybertruck looks good, not sure how modifiable it will be or chargeable for remote trips. I was a bit shocked they were still using AGMs for 12v systems TBH.

      Amazing! I sold the car now to a friend and last time I spoke with them the electrical system is still working great. I've actually just booked in to get my new car done with the same kind of system using DCS batteries and Victron gear!
