    Squirrelly? I dunno, Clint, he might be playing the gusts and the waves. Most helmsmen I've raced with are doing that, nonstop, instinctively, reflexively, like breathing. Even during a social cruise, and even on big powerful dreadnoughts like Ranger. Eking out every foot to weather as if they're driving a thirteen-foot Laser.
    Or...maybe the cameraman asked him to look busy.

      No, that's definitely Landrover territory. The Landrover is a quantum measurement unit that may assume the number of orthogonal linear dimensions required. The Ferrari is a speed metric. This yacht travels at approximately 0.05 Ferraris.

    Why such nasty comments. If you have nothing nice to say then don't comment at all. FYI there's are skilled sailors who race these sailing yachts for pleasures and many causes that your obviously not aware of or care. Comment on other videos not here please!

    Just curious what does a yacht like this cost? Love these boats. If I ever won the lottery I'd have to get one and learn all there is to learn about sailing and racing them. Thanks for sharing this wonderful ship. PS, LOVE the interior! Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

    So hear we have a high speed sailing boat that has an interior that is like that of the queen mary. Minus the fact that Queen mary has 56 wood species in her interior.
    Best add this to every growing list of vessels I want to experience.

    Can you show us the keeling of the ranger?? Is this the name sake of the lone ranger of Yosemite national Park? She apparently is sailing off keel. The most lateral resistance should be mast and headsails to keel the sails. This would straighten up the boat and increase her speed.

    4:57 I don't get it....how can you have chairs like that in a sailboat that heels, pitches, and rolls? Wouldn't those chairs go sliding all over the place and smash up all the pretty glass cabinets? What is it supposed to be? A boat, or a condo on the riveria? (Sorry, no disrespect meant, just a bit puzzled... :-)

    Seems very squirrelly ....a lot of play in wheel. Should be sailing without having to move the wheel... Boat that tracks well you could leave the wheel alone and it wouldn't move....freeboard is lower than original J. In the water because she is to heavy . Capt Nat would fail her on sea trial...

    • @conniefontenot2793
      @conniefontenot2793 7 років тому +2

      Clint Davis great observation. Made me think twice. He said. Moving very smoothly without moving the wheel. He had constant wheel play...salesman talk I guess

    • @petterskoglund2228
      @petterskoglund2228 7 років тому +4

      When riding big waves you constantly have to steer to make the boat "surf" in the most optimal way. Volvo Ocean race boats require constants steering for example.
      If you have a more stable boat it's not as required (as you won't be surfing very well anyway) but then you're not going as fast.

    • @davidsmyth93
      @davidsmyth93 6 років тому +3

      Long keel boats, with the rudder on the trailing edge of the keel, are kinda like that. The first little movement from centerline causes an inverse steering moment -- the boat's stern moves towards the rudder. Then a little more rudder movement starts the boat turning as you would normally expect. Rudders on the aft edge of keels sorta suck.

    • @beach4me2007
      @beach4me2007 6 років тому

      David Smyth , Olin Stevens would agree with you regarding keel hung rudders... Dorade was one of the first to hang it from a skeg

    ChocolateHappyness... the interior on the original and other J boats of the late twenties through 1930s was a stripped out hull... solely racing machines.
    The modern J boats (primarily reproductions of the original hull lines and sail plan) are mostly aluminum hulls and all have very luxurious interiors.
    Interestingly, the interiors add considerable mass and the boat set lower in the water so are not as fast as the wetted surface is larger on the hull and they are not sailing to the intended hull shape lines due to the increase in draft.
    Ranger here is of the modern reconstructions is the only steel hulled one like the originals but that makes it heavier than the aluminum hulled boats like Hanuman which seems this last year or to to be proving fastest on the regatta circuits. However, Ranger due to its increased mass is faster in heavy winds and has the advantage in those conditions... which if you are a sailor is what you sail for... !

    • @billbogg3857
      @billbogg3857 10 років тому

      I think they can offset that by savings in weight elsewhere. I know that in one of these modern versions of pre war designs they saved 40 tons of weight over the original - just by using modern materials.

    • @tincoffin
      @tincoffin 9 років тому

      ***** Yes I think the added weight of the interiors was compensated for by savings elsewhere. 1lb saved at the mast top on these boats would correspond to a far greater saving of weight at deck level

    • @kimballscarr
      @kimballscarr 9 років тому

      Ranger has gone through many many improvements since it was launched. They have saved a huge amount in these upgrades to the rig... several tons! This has made it more and more competitive. The two new Js about to hit the circuit should really tell the tail. Rainbow was expected to best everybody but has not. I think it is a matter of sorting out, and that is hugely expensive. Hanuman really was on top for awhile but is less so now as Ranger and the others improve. Though I think Jim Clark has lost some interest in Hanuman and its for sale too... as is Rainbow.

    • @chrisneal66
      @chrisneal66 8 років тому +1

      she is 20 tons heavier than the next boat in her class. and like he said. with a head wind she will blow the doors off of the others.
