- In this video, we look at one of Switzerland's most beautiful and unique railways, the Unesco heritage listed Berninabahn.
The Bernina railway sets a few records, including being the highest railway alpine crossing in Europe (2253m), the highest adhesion railway of the continent, the open air railway with the greatest height difference (1824m) and furthermore one of the steepest adhesion railways (conventional railway without cogs) worldwide, with gradients of up to 7%.
A unique aspect of Switzerland's narrow gauge mountain railways is the mixing of passenger and freight wagons in a single train, with wagons often added or removed at intermediate stops with shunting locomotives. On the Bernina line, the cargo mostly consists of wood on stake cars and derivatives of oil in tank cars.

Дружище, это иллюзия. Здесь как раз вмешательство человека максимально. Все деревья на склонах вырублены и посажены так как надо, поля распаханы, засеяны и используются все по максимуму (от посадок травы для сена до выпаса животных), дороги, тропинки, лужайки - ВСЕ обработано, создано и поддерживается в данном виде. Хочешь увидеть красоту с минимум вмешательства человека? Посмотри подобные ролики из Сибири - вот там дикая природа, там можно за час вообще ни одного поселения не встретить... Или Канаду... Там такая же красота дикая. А Европа вся создана руками человека за многие столетия. Потому там и комфортно...

Indeed. Winter 2015 I did pontresina-tirano and came back to pontresina - Alp Grum again .. in the same trip. What amazes me is how well I remember the line. the lake (lago blanco ) in winter.. arctic scene , all white

Recht herzlichen Dank für dieses wunderschöne Video. In den 80'er-Jahren hatte ich die unvergessliche Gelegenheit selbst den Blich des Lokführers zwischen Pontresina und Ospizio Bernina genießen zu dürfen. Es ist eine traumhafte Gegend.
Ich hatte ebenfalls diese Gelegenheit im 2011 von Poschiavo bis Alp Grüm. Einfach wunderschön.
Che vista meravigliosa! Thank you for a spectacular video with some stunningly beautiful shots. My favourite moment is just after Alp Grüm, when you see the Lago di Poschiavo in the distance for the first time. At that point the lake is more than 1km lower in altitude, but is reached without any rack assistance. It's not just great railway engineering, but an amazing feat of surveying to find a route with a workable gradient. The Brusio viaduct must take the prize for a brillant solution to an almost impossible problem.
That's why it is a Unesco heritage site.

We ride Bernina Express from Tirano to Chur in 2017. The same rail track in opposite direction but longer, including the Landwasser Viaduct not included in this video. It was an spectacular experience. Thanks Bernina Rail and we hope do it again in the future. Thanks a lot from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Als wir zuvor mit dem "Orient-Express" von Istanbul nach London mit einem kleinen Umweg über den Berninapass gefahren waren, geschah kein Mord im Zug. Nun hoffentlich auch nicht. Nun befinden wir uns im weitesten Sinne auf der Strecke zwischen London und Istanbul. Ich war schon mal die Gotthard-Bahn gefahren. Diese Strecke noch nie. Die Landschaft ist vergleichbar großartig. Aber hier ist es viel ländlicher und gemütlicher. Im Gegensatz zur Gotthardbahn finde ich die italienische Seite spannender, weil es da steiler bergab geht.

Ich habe diese Fahrt in beide Richtungen sicher zehnmal gemacht und immer war und ist es ein ganz besonderes Vergnügen. Es fasziniert mich ungemein, vor allem diese Wahnsinns Leistung die hier erbracht wurde als diese Strecke von zumeist Italienischen gastarbeitern gebaut worden ist, und das vor über 100 Jahren. Grossartig. Auch als Schulbub durfte ich mitte der Fünfziger Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts ins Sommerlager nach Le Prese in die Villa Lardi.

First of all-thanks for filming in stunning quality & sharing this with the world. The details that you can see are phenomenal, almost as if your right there in the cab. Nothing can beat actually taking this ride, but for the millions that can't make such a trip-this is the next best thing. Such breathtaking beauty, the seamless transition into the towns and railway condition itself is excellent. I love seeing European & Japanese railroads snake their way thru towns that obviously has embraced & accepted them; you won't see that in America.

There are two versions in reverse but choose the one that is in several parts. The other is somewhat dark and fuzzy
My maternal great grandfather was born in Switzerland an emigrated to America in the 1800's. Sadly my mother did not fulfill her dream to visit, and I know neither will I. Watching these videos is the next best thing.

A year ago to date, we were riding this Bernina railway. Had great lunch in St Moritz, enjoyed the Freddy Mercury statue and gardens in the village. Most beautiful ride through the Alps. With Covid going, this was a refreshing reminder how awesome our trip was. Thank you for providing this wild ride.

I did the train ride from Pontresina to Poschiavo in 2001 when there was snow all around. Still to this day the best train journey I've ever done. Would love to do it in summer too.

Fascinating journey on a superbly-engineered railway. My favourite moment has to be when the train emerges from the tunnel above a precipitous drop down into the valley below (1:07:35).
Красивая и не привычная для заполярья природа вокруг однако. А так, сначала показалось, судя по ширине калии, что это детская железная дорога на максималках где-то в Забайкалье, времён СССР. Благодаря стараниям автора можно путешествовать с пивом на диване. Вокруг дома снежная равнина с белыми медведями, а на огромном экране телевизора ты любуешься красивыми пейзажами из кабины локомотива.

I'm currently preparing for the GMAT/writing papers and I've gotten into a study strategy where I focus on the exam preparation while the train is moving and I take brief breaks when the pulls into stations. It's more interesting than setting a timer, and I appreciate the change of scenery.
