Many people say, 'Why doesn’t this camera have an EVF and IBIS?' Hear me out, if you want both of those features, the answer is the Fujifilm XS20. This camera is mid-range and in the same class as the ZV-E10 Mark II. So, if you need more features, you'll need to buy a higher-priced model.
@ That’s the point. It’s an $800 camera, not a $1,200 one. People who need an EVF and IBIS should spend $1,200, not $800. At this price point, you might buy the Fuji X-S20 and Sony A6700

They didn't remain profitable as users if small devices moved to phones or action cams. Only ones left were photography people and they want a vf option hense the a6xxx and m5/m10/pan-f.
I wonder if the OM-5, which is now going for £650 on MPB, would be a better option. It has a great IBIS among a plethora of other features. It is only 8bit though and no 4k 60.
I believed the jump from x-m1 to x-m5 instead of x-m2, 3, 4. The reason is gen 1 sensor, and now it’s gen 5, the 40mp sensor. If I recall correctly gen 1 - 5 is 16mp, 16mp, 24mp, 26mp, and 40mp respectively.
The viewfinder is fancy shit that's totally not needed. I love my E.V.I.L. cameras (electronic viewfinder interchangeable lens) and TBH I couldn't even remember if any of my current cameras even have an onboard flash. (No, they don't) Last camera I owned with a flash was the Canon 70D and I retired that camera almost 6 years ago ( I wore it out till it wouldn't hold focus anymore)
it is certainly a powerful camera. i bought one, used two weeks, decided i wanted more length to the body to hold on to .. switching my lenses from MFT also was a factor
@@sdrtcacgnrjrc my main m43 is a GX85, so only 16mp. for stills, the 26mp sensor on the fuji may not add a ton of sharpness at first glance but of course it is there. a bigger improvement is in dynamic range and white balance, which the lumix really struggles with indoors. the fuji jpegs have a sort of purple cast which i assume people like as the "fuji look", but i think i would have to figure out how to correct for it. i think fuji have used this sensor for a while and it seems like a good one.
It's small but not smaller than gr3. only gr3 can literally fit into a shirt pocket. Otherwise there's a lot of pancake lens that goes with Sony a7cii and will be small enough for everything.
Hi Tom, Usual witty video we all love. Are small cameras better - maybe. Surely a slightly larger jacket pocket would enable a wider choice of cameras to be available to a buyer. I notice a Thumbs-up grip on your X-M5, does that mean it is like a bar of soap without it ?
Hey, thanks! The thumbs up grip on my X-M1 is there for 3 reasons. 1. grip, as you mentioned. It's not terrible without it, but I have large hands so it just helps. 2. It helps to prevent me hitting the record button, which is easily done due to it being right near the thumb rest, annoyingly. 3. I think it looks cool 😎
@@TomCalton Smaller cameras that don't have a decent size front grip cause me problems. The fleshy part at the base of my thumb often causes whatever buttons are at the bottom right rear of the camera to be pressed when gripping the camera. Olympus tend to put the Playback button there which worked round by getting the optional grip for my E-M10MK2. This tends to rotate the hand further round to the front as long fingers ( mine too! ) have more space to sit. The Pana G9 is just about perfect for ergonomics - I use this for bigger lenses. That is your Fuji thread well and truly hijacked.........
IMO creating a camera for "photography only" nowadays, with the amount of processing power and the bigger possibilities in storage, as well as the popularity of smartphones, is strange. I would love more cameras that lean into the video aspect, Lumix needs a better competition.
Leica and Hasselblad seem to be doing just fine 😅 But I totally understand your point - I even said in the video that I understand totally why they do it. But that doesn't stop me feeling like they're sacrificing some of the original magic in order to do it. It's a tough one.
Hey 👋🏻 Unfortunately I've not had a chance to review either of those T models so I'm not qualified to say. But hopefully someone can provide some guidance for you ☺️
All the old heads complaining about the camera lol...a kid in their room vlogging on a little tripod about whatever will get amazing results with this camera. A person using this as a travel camera will get amazing result. its 2024, any camera that comes out now will deliver and be great... just because its not $3000 and doesn't have a small peep hole for your eye, doesn't mean its not a good camera.
My problem with the X-M5 is mostly the film sim dial. Even those who shoot SOOC usually use complete recipes and not just change the film sim. So the dial becomes useless.
I think I would still rather have the OM5 from Olympus/OM systems for a few hundred dollars more. It’s probably about the same size and you get other features like live composite.
I don't get the whole "XM5 strays from photography" comment towards the end particularly comparing towards the Xm1. I had an XM1 briefly and returned it. The AF was super anemic compared to the XM5. And the XM5 has a lot of video features added, but also has a lot of photography added. Don't care much for the video like me? Just ignore them- you are hardly obligated to use them and it's not like the camera shoves the features in your face like video game micro transactions. The XM5 is *vastly better* as a photography camera than the XM1. Galaxies light years better. Hands down. The only thing I prefer from XM5 is the tilt LCD instead of FAS, but since the XM5 is so small, it doesn't bother me as much. Those who want flash- buy a small one. I never use flash in my street photography so that's a non issue to me but I can understand those who like built in flash. The overall response, AF options, AF itself, JPEG image quality, resolution, HIGHER Auto ISO rollout of the XM5 is vastly better than the XM1.
I think you may have slightly missed the point I was making. I didn't suggest that the X-M5 wasn't good for photography, or that it's not as good as the X-M1. As I mentioned in the video, the AF improvements alone make the X-M5 much easier to use. However, what I said was that it's no longer a "photography first" camera. Meaning there are more video specific features on it than photography specific ones. Which is totally understandable for the reasons I list in the video, but for me personally it makes it slightly less exciting to use as someone who is predominantly a photographer. That's purely a personal take though and everyone will have their own list of preferences that won't always align with my own. Either way, this is still a very impressive camera!
Sure its got a lot of features and i actaully bought it, but I know how xxxxx the focus is, most fuji lenses make lots of noise focusing, the exposure changes happen randomly during video and in steps etc and no stabilisation - i knew it was just all marketing hype - oh look everyone we are taking vidieo seriously - wrong you definately aren't. No serious vlogger is going to risk out out of focus, exposure shifting unstable video when for the same money they can get zve100 ii , or a little more the A6700. So why did I buy it, lets be honest here, it looks good, it's small, takes great stills, it;s fun. I'd always use a Sony when I actually need results that I can rely on, hence owning the ZE10 i , A6700, ZVE1 and A7RV, Fuji make beautiful looking stills cameras but they a years behind on video autofocus, exposure control and even stabilitiy. It's like they make a car that can do 200 miles an hour but has a steering wheel that's loose IMO
great looking camera, nice size,...but 26mb sensor makes it useless, unless your grandma needs a new camera . it is sad that Camera manufacturer do not make 60MB (and upward!!) camera these days, in that very exact size, and in that price point etc etc
I never seen someone in 10 years of professional work in photography shooting professional video with Fuji. Could have been a good street & travel camera with an EVF,,,I would have consider it but no.
You're not wrong there, though that's probably because up until recently the video performance on Fujifilm cameras just weren't as strong as the competition. They're making big strides though. 6.2k 10bit open gate is wild on a camera this size. Does that mean more people will start using Fuji for serious video work? Who knows. Only time will tell I guess.
I imagine it was a cost thing (just an assumption). And they probably didn't want to cannibalise the X-S20. But I agree. Having those amazing video features and no IBIS is frustrating.
They really should have gone with a built-in flash instead of a heavily redundant film sim dial. This is supposed to be a do-it-all pocket camera after all. Except you cannot do it all if you don't have flash. At this point in time if you don't know that Fujifilm is all about SOOC JPEG film simulations then you have a very severe case of Head Up Ass Syndrome.
I would prefer to remove the film dial and add a popup elf like on the Sony RX100 VII. On the other end the type of strobe on the M1 or the Sony are useless toys. So the ideal would be a compact interchangeable lens camera with a popup evf and a hot shoe, but so far nobody seems to provide that .
That's nice but the Fujifilm system has a severe lens problem. That's why you're using a 13 year old lens from 2012. Cause you have nothing to replace it with and it was never updated. These old Fujifilm lenses are horrible, loud, slow.
TBF, I was limited to what the PR company had available to send along with the loan review sample. Most of the newer lenses were already out on loan to other reviewers. Plus, I only personally own the Fuji 35mm f/1.4, so I was limited for choice.
You are, unfortunately, mistacken Tom. Worlds most powerful pocket camera is the Panasonic S9 with the amazing and small 18-40mm. Sure the price is higher, but if you want the very best image quality, ust add a smallrig grip...
I guess that title is very much subjective. I'd say both are certainly powerful cameras with their own list of pros and cons. This one is smaller/more pocketable though 😜
8:16 Certainly appreciated the dedication to the video content and your biceps, Sir. If may I suggest that showing some affection to your hands too? They looked a bit dry to me on my 100 inch TV🥹 . . . . . . . . . . (Just kidding😂 Love your videos as always)
Depends what kind of lens you attach and what pocket you put it in. With the 18mm f/2 it's been living comfortably in my jacket pocket the entire time I've been testing it.
I was hoping ud avoid that thing. I had a dubious pleasure on toying with it in and outside the shop. It's all plastic rubbish for me. All these simulations are very easy to fake in lightroom. I don't need video. I want to feel a sturdy product with some soul on it. I feel it about M1 (although the prices are horrible to buy it now), and I feel it's price should be 150-200 USD less. There's simply no reason to buy it when there's Sony a6400 on the market or even a6700 or Lumix s5ii or Sony a7c with slightly more money to add. I feel like all Fuji products starting with xt50 are pure plastic soulless rubbish.
Only thing i can clearly say is, xm-5 is looking beautiful without a lens on your hand, SHIIINNY ✨✨

Where are Sony A5xxx series ? Where are m43 small cameras ?
Ask youtubers why they advertising FF instead of smaller sensor. With modern editing software literally noone needs it.
It is only 8bit though and no 4k 60.
nice but i go with Nikon z30(ii?)
@@mv3592 me too
I believed the jump from x-m1 to x-m5 instead of x-m2, 3, 4. The reason is gen 1 sensor, and now it’s gen 5, the 40mp sensor. If I recall correctly gen 1 - 5 is 16mp, 16mp, 24mp, 26mp, and 40mp respectively.
But this camera uses the X-Trans IV sensor, not the V. So technically it's gen 4 sensor technology.
What we need now is 2 or 3 new super compact prime lenses to go with this camera!
hot shoe> pop-up flash
always ✨👌🏽
pop-up viewfinder > pop-up flash
Also the button the simulations is not new. It was there by default on the X-S20. And if you don't want it , you can override it.
It's not for me. I would not even call it a pocket camera. My GR3 is a pocket camera.
Can you please do a video on the OM TG 7?
I'm always switching Film Sim, so the dial dedicated to it looks good to me!
Do you ever customise them or just use them as they come?
ok I actually didn't realise how small this thing is. wow.
when did you order yours?
got mine on 11/11 and still don't have it
Mine is a loaner from Fujifilm so I didn't buy it. It has to be sent back.
Love this camera. No evf is okay for me. But it has long waiting list.. gonna be parience.
The viewfinder is fancy shit that's totally not needed. I love my E.V.I.L. cameras (electronic viewfinder interchangeable lens) and TBH I couldn't even remember if any of my current cameras even have an onboard flash. (No, they don't) Last camera I owned with a flash was the Canon 70D and I retired that camera almost 6 years ago ( I wore it out till it wouldn't hold focus anymore)
wasnt happy with the picture quality, sold mine
it is certainly a powerful camera. i bought one, used two weeks, decided i wanted more length to the body to hold on to .. switching my lenses from MFT also was a factor
Is there a big difference in image quality between this and your last m43 camera (and which one :-)
@@busydadscooking001 thanks for the feedback 👍🏼
I would absolutely sacrifice a pop-up flash for a useful dial. It's too bad that isn't a useful dial.
I am excited to get this camera at a fraction of the price in the used market when the x-e5 or x-pro4 comes out.😅
No EVF and a wasted dial, real shame they fudged such a nice model otherwise
It's small but not smaller than gr3. only gr3 can literally fit into a shirt pocket.
Otherwise there's a lot of pancake lens that goes with Sony a7cii and will be small enough for everything.
i fell off the fuji bandwagon once i got a lumix in my hands., but nice to see fujifilm updating some of the more affordable models.
Without IBIS, this became a solid webcam for streaming.
It's a tough one.
i am so with you on how fuji is veering away from their original ethos... 😔
Glad it's not just me!
Is X-M5 better than X-T 100 or X-T 5 ?? many friendly greetings from ever-sunny NKW Belgium
Hey 👋🏻
Unfortunately I've not had a chance to review either of those T models so I'm not qualified to say. But hopefully someone can provide some guidance for you ☺️
Thank you
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting 😁
Very good point, and I agree! Who's using the vanilla film Sims, right!?
@@TomCalton Exactly
Popup flash is DEADWEIGHT!!!
I would prefer a flash, to make it more compact since you don't have to bring an external flash.
Still has to compete with a GRIII though.
Awaiting the XM 7 ( 2026) with IBIS and a 40 M sensor - can’t wait ! 😎👍
Man why isnt anyone posting a review on the 16-55 2.8 Mark II?
Everybody’s waiting for their copy😅
I think I would still rather have the OM5 from Olympus/OM systems for a few hundred dollars more. It’s probably about the same size and you get other features like live composite.
Thanks, now I know I'm better off with the 1 and not the 5. (Probably the same price, too.)
Unavailable on the Fuji site. Why should we pay attention to Fuji if we have to buy all the bodies on eBay for huge markups?
You don't. Just look a little further brother.
Its an amazing camera great quality images just needs a l mount and its perfect
Will that camera kickstart the new era of EDC cameras?
Tom, I like your videos, but this one uses sharpening a bit too much.
The colour grade is the same as my other videos brother. No sharpening added 🤷🏻♂️ It's cropped 6K video - maybe that's it?
looks like they used the same body mold to build this XM5
M43 brands wondering why they are not successful.
@@d3xmeister ?
great looking camera, nice size,...but 26mb sensor makes it useless, unless your grandma needs a new camera . it is sad that Camera manufacturer do not make 60MB (and upward!!) camera these days, in that very exact size, and in that price point etc etc
Sony also have a xm5, the wh1000xm5 🤣
This is Sony cinematic review. :))
Honestly the film sim dial is completely useless. My xt100 has a dial there. But it's easy to change it. I would love to have that dial as an iso dial
No IBIS is kind of a deal breaker. And a weird one too. Really, Fujifilm?!
I imagine it was a cost thing (just an assumption). And they probably didn't want to cannibalise the X-S20. But I agree. Having those amazing video features and no IBIS is frustrating.
Did you review this thing in Bragg Creek????
film sim dial is fkn annoying for anyone who sticks with one sim
8:14
Fuji Salt Bae?🤌
That's nice but the Fujifilm system has a severe lens problem. That's why you're using a 13 year old lens from 2012. Cause you have nothing to replace it with and it was never updated. These old Fujifilm lenses are horrible, loud, slow.
TBF, I was limited to what the PR company had available to send along with the loan review sample. Most of the newer lenses were already out on loan to other reviewers. Plus, I only personally own the Fuji 35mm f/1.4, so I was limited for choice.
Is canon 100d good for landscape?
No
Why
It's good to think about new job when you ask that question.
Beautiful camera, but "totally right"? Pop-up flash? No. Optical viewfinder? No. Totally right? No.
Yes, I still love my old X20!
Who would part with good money to buy a camera that does not have a viewfinder ?
I literally never use the viewfinder. I think you'd be surprised how many people don't these days.
Wow
You are, unfortunately, mistacken Tom. Worlds most powerful pocket camera is the Panasonic S9 with the amazing and small 18-40mm. Sure the price is higher, but if you want the very best image quality, ust add a smallrig grip...
I guess that title is very much subjective. I'd say both are certainly powerful cameras with their own list of pros and cons. This one is smaller/more pocketable though 😜
Just critical; l This's called a bad script 5 minutes already passed but still nothing about the camera specs.
You would call that a bad script.
This is the best credible review i've seen so far. #mabuhay!
X80 anyone?
Ehh Fuji... too little, too late, and not enough film simulation dials!
if this one had an ibis, i would have bought it right away, with all it's features, this could have been a perfect hybrid camera for me😅
Maybe the X-S20 for you then? Thoughts?

You realise you need a lens to use this camera right? Put one on and it isn't a pocket camera anymore. In fact, this isn't a pocket camera.
Depends what kind of lens you attach and what pocket you put it in. With the 18mm f/2 it's been living comfortably in my jacket pocket the entire time I've been testing it.
It's a pocket camera.
Samsung NX500 Is a ten years old camera ….compare
Fuji is on my list for the collection, but this isn't it. Overpriced, and no evf. Thanks for the content.
