Lol the people freaking out about the film simulation dial 😂 This camera isn’t for you! Simple as that. (Plenty of Fujifilm cameras without a film simulation dial, like EVERY SINGLE ONE minus the X-T50).
@@rogerhampton2844 who knows, they might come out with a compact body without the film dial down the road for those who don’t need/want it. But I think the film dial might come in very handy for those times you wanna just push out pics straight out of camera (gotta love the RAW+JPEG option for that). I definitely plan to explore this once my X-T50 shows up.
Great review Sir! Sounds like the XT50 is a great option for photographers who want a smaller, lighter camera with the same image quality as the XT5. The new film simulation dial is a nice touch too
As always, this is a very detailed review. I shoot mostly Wildlife and Sports, so my choice is the H2s. I had the 100 series, and I liked the camera, but I was always looking for another focal length. I sold my 100V, and when the X-T50 was announced, I decided to give it a try. After using it for a month, I think this camera checks many boxes for beginners and seasoned photographers. It has a full auto mode and the new sim dials. I've found that with the 40-meg sensor with the new kit lens is sharp. IBIS works well, and the best part is Fuji added customizable front and rear dials. I'm able to set this camera up almost identically to my H2s. This is my everyday walkaround camera, and it's a small powerhouse package.
I'm happy because i can still stick with my x-t30 without any fomo. I'll patiently wait fir an x-t60 or a firmware update that makes that film dial into a customisable one 😅 I still have to get used to the round shape of it (it reminds me a bit of the x-e3) but I don't know, 40 mpx maybe is too much for my vintage lenses
Wow, Gordon. You have been very busy lately. Although I have no interest in buying APS-C cameras, I like watching your reviews. Thanks for your hard work.
Excellent review and the best one yet. Amateur, mainly travel photographer with my X-Pro2 and 16-55 who’s looking for less bulk and weight and IBIS for the 70-300. Seriously thinking of the X-T50 and 16-80 lens; and travelling with them plus the 70-300 and 8mm. Plus my GR-III in my “cold dead hands”! As an aside I normally add a handgrip but read the compact size makes this difficult as one’s fingers graze the lens. Keep up the good work.
Hello. Excellent video review, as usual. Owner of a X-T20. So still comparing to it. Much better performance and ergonomics but I'd have liked 1) a fixture for an interchangeable eyecup. I added a rubber eyecup to my X-T20 but it's fixed on the hot shoe, so the flash unit becomes unavailable 2) return of a d-pad. None = 4 less customizable buttons 3) customizable film sim dial, please: one dial dedicated to film sims REALLY??? With the new 16-50, 1899€. Launch price but IMHO somethig like 10% less would seem more "reasonable". Maybe fear of it cannibalizing the X-T5 sales if cheaper?
Thank you for your review. I’m not sold on the XT50. The biggest objection for this model is the price. I’ve seen used XT5 bodies below the MSRP. I hope Fuji will make the film sims dial programmable in firmware updates. Unlike you, I’m not that tempted to play with the film simulations. I already know what I like. The XT50 is smaller and lighter than the XT5. That is its major selling point. At a lower price it would, for me, be a more compelling proposition. I own a XT30 so I appreciate what the smaller size and lower weight can mean when carrying it all day. The fact that this body is so closely priced compared to a used XT5 causes me to pause. This is a competent body and hope it sells well. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I agree, if the X-T5 can be had for a similar price, I'd go for that. Even though it's larger, it's not that much bigger and I prefer its ergonomics. But as I noted in the video, we're comparing launch price of X-T50 against discounted 1 year price of X-T5. Give it a year and there will be a gap between them.
Seems almost perfect to me but I’m not sure I could deal with a £1k camera with no weather sealing in UK weather. I’m not using it in a bag so that rules out using it most of the year in the north
I suspect weather sealing is more of a marketing issue than a real one. I photographed for many years in the Lake District with cameras, film and digital, without any claimed weather sealing. Anyway, just got one and I’m off to Keswick in a month!
Great review Gordon…and loved I could read it first and then watch the video! Only big surprise for me here was the fact that that the screen doesn’t fully articulate, but for many photographers that is a plus. Personally I would be happy if it just flipped up all the way. And I was hoping for weather sealing. A nice camera overall.
I saw this review and its made me think about getting this camera as I am a professional photographer and yes I said professional photographer who hates lugging around heavy equipment such as my Lumix gh6 WHICH I now solely use for Cinematography only. Iv been toying with x5 and the x50 over the past few hours as I need a nice camera that's small, lightweight and portable that I am able to take with me on an everyday bases as most of my photos I take are street photography, Behind the scene shots for the film company and films I work on as well as for the graphic business I now do for the company I work for doing graphic design. I don't wanna have to lug around a huge camera but at the same time I think the dial is a little kiddish. I mean I have been using the GH6 which I will be using this weekend taking photos when I am on a business trip to Florida. So.... In a way those fancy things do not bother me as much but I think this is a step up from the fine pix cameras that I was using from Fujifilm in the past and I think this will be an added addition to my line up. GH6 for cinematography as it is a Netflix approved camera, DJI Osmos Pocket 3 which I use for UA-cam and shorts and of course this camera which will be my dedicated photography camera for on the go when I travel for business and need something small but yet not heavy and over bearing that I can shove into my bag and off I go. Thank you for this review. My review is of course from a Cinematographers perespective than an actual photographers perspective. If it means buying more batteries because of its small form factor, don't need to worry about weather proofing and or an extra sd card slot, I am good. I know that at the end of the day, I will transfer all the photos that I have taken over to my external hard drive and then erase the card and start over the next day so having 2 card slots isn't reallyy worth it like on my GH6. Thank you again for this review and It made my decision worth wild
I hope you enjoy it! I find the X-T50 loses some of its charm if paired with a larger lens, in which case the X-T5 makes more sense. So choose your lenses carefully!
I dont get why people are saying get the X-T5. THIS is essentially an XT5 for cheaper without the water sealing and double sim but it perform EXACTLY like the X-T5. And people are freaking out about the sim dial as if drive option just completely vanished from the camera...
Great tech in such a small body but over priced. Should be around the £1000 mark. XT5 is far better value especially at current discounts. Lovely review as usual
Excellent video Gordan, very intriguing camera. Not owning a Fuji camera, this one ticks a lot of boxes though the pricing is Fuji too! Thanks for sharing!
Gordon, thanks for your in-depth review of the X-T5. Question: I have heard from different reviewers that the 40 MP sensor performs differently with different Fujifilm lenses, including accuracy for AF. Would you feel comfortable recommending Fujifilm lenses OVER Canon lenses, or Nikon lenses? I ask because I am considering buying a Fuji, again. I bought the X-T1 in 2015 and felt compelled to return it due to AF problems. I never had the same kinds of problems with AF with Nikon, Canon, or Olympus.
I'd recommend pairing it with their latest lenses for the best results. It's like any camera system, it'll work with older lenses, but maybe not as well
lol i hate it too that's why i mapped the Q button to be electronic level so i can stay in a shooting mode if i accidentally pressed it, and mapped AEL to the quick menu
Kia Ora Gordon - Great review mate 👏 I'm gonna have a hard time choosing between a used XT5 and a new XT50 then haha. This looks like a nice lighter setup 👍 Ka Pai! and hope you are well 😁
Good question. I'm fond of the 35 coverage, so on Fujifilm X that'd be a 23 lens. The 23 1.4 LM is fantastic, but a bit too big for me on this smaller body. That's a personal choice, but the 23 f2 is much better size-wise. That said, the 23 f2 isn't as sharp as I'd like it to be, so I'd switch it for the XF 35 f2 if you want to go small; sure it's a nit longer than I'd like, but it's small and sharp. So two options for you: XF 23 1.4 LM is you want to go high-end, or XF 35 f2 if you want to go small.
@@cameralabs thanks, I am looking for an X100VI alternative, thats why I asked. What do you think about FUJINON XF27mmF2.8 R WR for a X100vi alternative set up?
@@sjmedia_official I completely hear you, I'm forever trying to pair small bodies and lenses as an X100 alternative! The 27 is nice and small but I've not tested it. I used to be a bit dismissive of 40mm or thereabouts, but now I quite like it, so maybe I need to revisit this lens!
21:58 my eyes are bleeding , For the prices they ask for all of their cameras, this is garbage. Its 2024 and the AF is like CDAF only. But hey , You have FILM SIM DIAL
How often does anyone change the film simulation once they’ve found the one they prefer? The drive dial was way more useful and its exclusion from the X-T50 is a deal breaker for me.
I've been shooting with Fujifilm cameras for years and personally speaking I regularly switch between my four or five favourite Film Sims every day when out and about. Again, it's differs for each person, but I personally change the Film Sim more often than the drive mode, so the dial suits me fine, but it would have been more flexible as a blank customisable one.
Owning both X-T10 and X-T20, as well as X-T1, I can honestly say I have never used the drive dials. I am more likely to use the film simulation dial even if it is a bit crippled, but would have much preferred it being an ISO dial. For me it is a small ergonomic improvement, but not one worth worrying about.
@@richardhale9664 Yes, but this move is squarely aimed at jpeg shooters who like to use film sims...but to RAW shooters it is a backward step when the rest of this camer is excellent. The film sims are great for those who use them, but Fuji should have left the dial alone and coninue with the access to sims via the menu. It wouldn't be so bad if they left the dial blank (as wit the XS10) and made it customisable (again as it is on the XS10)
.....and with the 40mp sensor - but NOT with that new dial. Apparently, according to Fuji rumors, they are bring out the XE5 but not this year...maybe 2025
Did fuji skip the xt40? Yes they did! - this is the camera i was looking for. I got the xt30ii a year ago, Limited but compact and a capable camera when i do t want to lug my r5 with me… I think i know what will be under my cmas tree :)
I am trying to decide on a new light camera to take eon multi-day hiking trips, as well to replace my full frame Z6 for other hiking and traveling. I was looking at the XT-30 ii for the lightweight but like the IBIS of the XT-50. Of course I also like the weather sealing of the XT-5 but am worried that all the little incremental weight adds (XT-30 to XT-50 to XT-5) will make the XT-5 feel heavy and defeat the purpose of my switch. Thoughts?
@@donhutchison9289 yeah same I decided to go with the xt50 because I really want it to be as lightweight as possible for walking. It depends on your weight tolerance, I am very sensitive and XT5 is still too much for me. Personally around 600g is my maximum where it does not bother me much, and XT50 + a XF23/35/50 is around 600g which is enough. The XT5 stars with 720g with the lenses mentioned and + filter it is a little too much for me.
On the x-t20 you could assign Avd effects (from the drive dial) to a function button, so you could switch between the effects quicker. Can you do that on the x-t50?
Beautiful camera but I feel an awkward middle child between the cheaper and excellent X-S20 and its bigger brother X-T5 available for marginally more money.
HI! I need an opinion, I'm about to buy the XT 50 to travel around the world in the next few years. However, I am evaluating the right objective. Can I ask you which one do you consider best for a beginner bike? I had thought about the kit with which the 16-50 is sold, or in your opinion is a 16-80 which I really like or an all-rounder 18-135 better? I thank you :)
It's a balance between range vs size and weight for me. And if you're backpacking, maybe lighter is better. The 16-80 would probably be my choice, but again it depends what you want to carry and if you have a need to zoom longer still.
@@Nixian1996 there's a lot of concern over the 40mp sensor that's not justified in my view! Basically as you increase the res of a sensor, you'll just notice differences between the lenses more. You will get more out of the 16-40 with a 40mp than a 26mp, but obviously a sharper lens will get even more still. I'd say out of the zooms, it's fine. If you want max quality out of any sensor, you'll want a sharper lens, like one of their recent primes. I really like the 23 f1.4 LM, but having just one fixed lens is a bit of a push for travel. That said, I've only travelled with my X100V which only has a 23mm lens for the last 3 years and love how it forced me to think and compose.
Hi Gordon, Great review. Question: Is there any way to change from AF to Manual focus via the button settings? I find the M-C-S button on the front truly UNINTUITIVE because you have to flip the body around to see the setting. Is there any way to change it in settings?
@@cameralabs Thanks. I read around that the x-t5 gets really close to Sony system as per af. Not same sure, but close. I Don't care actually about video.
Then it boils down to looks, focus, controls etc. I find the Sony better at focusing, especially for video, but I prefer the looks and OOC JPEGs from the Fujifilm.
Hi Gordon, I can get the XS20 or XT50 for roughly the same price with the new 16-50mm lens. Which would you choose as a stills/video hybrid as I want, for everyday general shooting?
Hmmm, good question, but I'm afraid I don't know. It's an option on the drive menu, so if you can custom-add, say, high-speed burst or panorama, then yes, but I'm not sure you can.
Gordon, thank you for another excellent, balanced review. You almost convinced me that the new film sim. dial is worth having. The Drive button looks powerful enough for most purposes. My main complaint is the surplus MPs. Who really needs 40? There's so much nonsense doing the rounds about resolution. Still, Fuji seems to have got quite a lot right with this one. I have an X-T5 and am debating swopping it for the X-T50, as I like smaller bodies.
I'm not sure, I assumed you could choose JPEG, RAW or both in any mode. If not, try using Program mode as it will allow RAW, albeit not the auto subject detection
Hi Gordon. Adjusted for inflation since release XT 30 body only £1159. Which puts the cost of living crisis into perspective. So the increase in price for the 50 isn’t as steep an increase as it seems. For which you get IBIS, 40 mp and the latest processor.
These are made in China, not Japan. They cost next to nothing to make. That’s why Fujis profits are way up, people overpaying for cameras like this. It should be around $900-$1k.
@@--AnonymousUser-- So you think crop sensor Fuji cameras are priced where they should be? Both Canon and Sony have less expensive and far better bang for the buck crop sensor cameras. Hell, you can get a FF Canon for hundreds of dollars less than Fuji's crop sensor cameras LOL 😂
@@michaelbell75 You don't really know what you are talking about. Plus if one compares the lenses available for Fuji users compared to Canon R Mount? Well for Canon I suggest you sacrifice a kidney to help fund your next R lens.
As usual, the best review of the XT50 - great job Gordon. Well, my main disappointment...as a RAW shooter....is the addition of that gimmicky film sim dial. Why not leave it as accessible via the menu as before? This effectively reduces the XT50 to a jpeg shooter's camera. As most RAW shooters, I never use these presets so adding a dedicated dial that isn't even customisable is a backword step. Yes, film sims are popular to jpeg shooters and is great to have.....but not at the expense of turning a pricey, otherwise excellent camera into a dumbed down piece of kit. I wanted this camera as an everyday carry round and baby brother to my XT5...but this may just be a deal breaker
@@cameralabs ......And there lies the dilemma!! I really wanted the new sensor, processor and IBIS in a smaller body....the really unnecessary (in my opinion) introduction of this (un-programable) jpeg only dial is a waste of a dial for RAW. I may still get this camera because of the main benefits and try to get used to something I will never use!! If only they had made it programable. The XS10's film sim dial is blank and programable so maybe Fuji will bring out a firmware upgrade to make the film sim dial programable too
@@NJM1948 The really bad news is that even the FS1,2,3 positions are useless to me as a jpeg shooter as I can not assign them to custom recipe slots. Meaning that even I as a jpeg shooter will have that dial permanently set to C. Fuji are just weird, they develop the firmware to enable custom recipes but then don't take the logical step of adding custom slots to a new purpose built dial.
Better, I think, to crop in post for a better outcome. Digital crop discards outside pixels, you can do the same thing in your computer with the aditional flexibility of choosing which pixels to discard.
I'd like a review of the new kit lens. The old one had macro and stabilization. A film sim.knob replacing ISO seems odd. Why not dedicate the sim an option on the dials? Since people shooting 40.keg pics probably want raw, there goes your son till post. Which makes sense. I don't mind warming up my white balance a bit.
I have been using the X-T3 mercilessly as a walking camera since its release, having taken more than 500 thousand frames with it. In anticipation of it's death, I am looking for a replacement, but this camera clearly cannot become it. I just don't understand the button layout of the two-digit series, and the new film simulation wheel doesn't add any convenience for me. It seems like i'll get some lightly used X-T4 in the end.
Hi for traveling do you suggest going with the A6700 or fuji XS20? i'm scared of the autofocus performance and handheld video stabilization with the XS20 because i will be solo and filming and taking picture myself, i'm not professional this is only for travel and memories i will use it with sigma 18 50
Soon all Fuji cams will cost the same. It is ridiculous. It seems like xh2 with a 23 f2 is an ideal Fuji combo. You can find it with a good discount now. X S20 is also good, but, again, not much cheeper. I love Fuji, but I am confused with their lineup
It seems like Fuji have been spooked by the explosion of the X100 cameras and are completely reconfiguring the X series in response to that market, leading to strange conflicting decisions. The T50 is seemingly posited as a X100VI alternative, an attractive capable travel cam/accessory for enthusiasts (instead of an entry level tool). But why the 40MP sensor then? Couldn’t they keep it at 26MP and have the nicer EVF? The GFX cameras (while still being quite expensive) retain their value for money, which the X cameras are steadily losing.
I think Fuji shot itself in the foot with this pricing. The only folks who will buy this are those who get tired of waiting for the X-100VI. It’s too pricey. If they dropped the price by $200-300 these things would be selling like hotcakes… Oh, and you can get the X-T5 for a few hundred more… again, not a smart move from Fuji
I answer all comments! I'd need them side by side, but since they share the same processor, I suspect they would have v similar AF. Also see my XS20 review
For the pricing of the X-T50, go with the X-S20. Same processor, same Ibis, nicer grip. 26MP is more than enough. Reala Ace will also be released for X-S20
Well the main problem is the price. Way to expensive. For 150-250€ you can get already the X-T5. The X-Txx series was always a sub 1000€ camera. The X-S series used to be more expensive. Should have been maximum priced like the X-S20
Price too high for a dumbed down xt5. 30/30ii is head and shoulders above 50 as an all round baby brother camera and fujifilm know it. For £1300+ with a degraded kit lens it HAS to have meaningful weather sealing.
@@cameralabs you got 6 stops on S5ii review :D double a74 and 50% more than this. It's wild that they report these false numbers when anyone can test and disprove. Isn't good for credibility
Well, nothing in this world comes for free. With such a tiny pixel, a very short shutter speed is needed. In photos with high magnification, even at short focal lengths of this lens, micro-blur is clearly visible. So with longer focal lengths and lower lighting, it is unlikely that you will be able to take clear photos with this camera handheld 😪 In my opinion, the optimal resolution for aps-c matrices is 26 - 28 MP.
Thanks. Your reviews are the best. $1,300 is overpriced. You can get an X-T5 for a few hundred more. No idea why people would pay this but looking at Fujis sales numbers, they apparently are. You will soon be paying $2k for crop sensor cameras. Just say no.
@@cameralabs True but thats more of a niche, video centric model and a flagship camera. The X-T line is supposed to be their consumer budget line. The fact that Fuji were able to completely upgrade the GFX 100SII and release it for $1,000 less than the first one 3 years ago just tells you how badly they are price gouging and ripping us off. This is a whopping $500 more than the previous X-T30. There is zero reason for that, especially considering the much larger sensor in the GFX 100SII costs a lot more to produce than the one inside the X-T50.
Yes it makes no sense whatsoever for Fuji to put their Unique Selling Point on a dedicated dial, it should instead be buried in a menu. What were they thinking?
So the dial only changes the film simulation? Is there any ability to save any settings like shadows/colour chrome/white balance adjustments etc? If not that is a huge missed opportunity to save custom recipes directly on the dial.
@@matusmisik_photography I agree, it's a shame if it doesn't work. I haven't tried it yet, so can't comment, but again i avoid updating firmware or operating systems until there's been some tests done - or unless I'm the one who's doing the tests! if there's a genuine problem, I'm sure they will fix it though.
It's a strange move from this firm. Install a “dead” battery and offer a camera for such money. For another 900$ it would be interesting even with a 26MP sensor
If you want to pay that few hundred quid more for a larger, heavier, camera, which I don't. I'll simply wait for the street price to lower. Of course the 30 II is being retained for now if budget is your primary concern.
@@NotAnotherChannel_Channel Yes, that was my point, I choose not to buy the XT5 for the reasons stated, size, weight, cost, making the XT-50 the obvious alternative. That does not matter to you, but it does to others.
Hi could you please do a comparaison between the XS20 vs A6700, i can't find any reviews that go into detail like i would like to know the difference in Autofocus for both photo and video but also the handheld stabilization because fuji ibis is known to be bad in video and jumpy. handheld stabilization when walking, panning thank you

With the new 16-50, 1899€. Launch price but IMHO somethig like 10% less would seem more "reasonable". Maybe fear of it cannibalizing the X-T5 sales if cheaper?
I'm sure it will go down over time, but at launch the XT5 is rather close
wow, it seems new camera models being baked faster than smartphone iterations ,nice
I like this camera, will fit nicely in my hiking pack!

So detailed and useful. I now confused what to buy.

Is it possible to shoot RAW (RAF) images when using the Auto mode (the X-T20 that I have won't) ?

Great tech in such a small body but over priced. Should be around the £1000 mark. XT5 is far better value especially at current discounts. Lovely review as usual

Only added about $200 to x100 vi which upgraded to same sensor and processor and IBIS. $500 increase is ridiculous.

Hi! I'd go for the xt5 as it's still small
If you should glue one prime lens to it. Which one?
To me the film simulation dial is kind of a wasted dial. Leaving drive mode on that dial would get more use
I think that depends on the owner. I thought it might be an issue for me, but it wasn't
It would have been easier to overlook if they had made the dial customisable and maybe even blank as is the case on the XS10...oh well!
It wouldn't be so bad if they left the dial blank (as wit the XS10) and made it customisable (again as it is on the XS10)

weight difference sounds very small on paper to the xt-5, how did it feel for you?
@@cameralabs thanks for your time. Does the 16-80 have problems with the 40 megapixel sensor of the XT-50 in your opinion?

Good point, but I don't think there's an alternative as it's a dedicated, fixed control.
what about the af-c? Is it as good as the X-T5? is it a bit closer to Sony Alpha system?
Since they share the same sensor and processor it should be equal to the X-T5. It isn't going to be as the Sony.

I hear ya, but there's still the X-T30 II, albeit without IBIS.
@@cameralabs ......And there lies the dilemma!! I really wanted the new sensor, processor and IBIS in a smaller body....the really unnecessary (in my opinion) introduction of this (un-programable) jpeg only dial is a waste of a dial for RAW. The really bad news is that even the FS1,2,3 positions are useless to me as a jpeg shooter as I can not assign them to custom recipe slots.

What do you mean by niver EVF? I dont understand
I think Fuji shot itself in the foot with this pricing. The only folks who will buy this are those who get tired of waiting for the X-100VI. It’s too pricey. If they dropped the price by $200-300 these things would be selling like hotcakes…

That's the great thing about consumerism, no-one is forcing you to buy it, and there's lots of choices. But not many new cameras under 1k.
Does it have digital zoom? 1.4x and 2x like the x-t5? Thanks
I'm not sure, but most menu features are shared, so I'd guess yes.
When I shot film, I did not like Fujifilm colours, there's a whole dial wasted for me.
If you don't like Fujifilm colours, why consider a Fujifilm camera?
Why spend money on new body if last firmware update destroyed autofocus on xt5/xh2/xh2s/xs20
Who told you to update the firmware? It's optional and always a risk until thoroughly tested
Fujifilm announced at the summit in February that they have developed a new and improved autofocus system.
And what's happened?
I think people trust Fujifilm what they said 🤔
@@matusmisik_photography I agree, it's a shame if it doesn't work.
Won't this mean that Fuji will never be able to give out new film simulations?
Remember there's some custom positions where you can choose from a bigger list.
For only a few hundred quid more, the XT5 is more attractive, especially as you said with discounts.
It can be close on price, definitely
If you want to pay that few hundred quid more for a larger, heavier, camera, which I don't. I'll simply wait for the street price to lower.
Of course the 30 II is being retained for now if budget is your primary concern.
@@JackBurton-qp4hc It’s a matter of choice. I use the XT5 for street and with prime lenses. I have not felt weight to be a constraint.

Yes, that was my point, I choose not to buy the XT5 for the reasons stated, size, weight, cost, making the XT-50 the obvious alternative. That does not matter to you, but it does to others.
great review!!
Thanks!

Overpriced by about 400-500, so no, I'll stick with what I already have.
Hi could you please do a comparaison between the XS20 vs A6700, i can't find any reviews that go into detail like
i would like to know the difference in Autofocus for both photo and video but also the handheld stabilization because fuji ibis is known to be bad in video and jumpy.
handheld stabilization when walking, panning thank you
That should read primo not promo
