James, You are a true hero for me for 30 years, when I was a teen so lost and alone, Metallica was the only thing that found me. Your voice still pulls me out of the darkness. Your lyrics taught me how to write poetry, I wrote you poems thanking you. It's like you have been a friend to me assuring me that I am never alone. Live to meet you to thank you, James. I have been to 9 Metallica shows, the last one in Las Vegas, NV 2/25/22. Honestly can say that you looked and sound better than ever before. Instantly enchanted me forever loves you.
Are you a metallica fan or a james hetfield fan? Because metallica is a 4 guys band if you didn’t know and by the way lars made 50% of metallica songs so maybe the one you like so much aren’t even from james
@@DeathcoreHusky Can u not be both?I didnt know there were rules bro!!!
@@DeathcoreHusky kind of a dumb comment man. she said his voice and his lyrics pulled her out of the darkness. obviously as a fan of metallica for so long and going to 9 shows, she knows theres more than just james. but james is metallica. lars could be kicked out in the 80s and they still wouldve been great. different yes, but still great. personally i like lars's unique drumming style and his ability to compose songs, but james is and will always be the main driving force of Metallica.
yes the older the better!!!!!!!!
I'm not overly religious, but god bless that man for writing Fade To Black,Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn.3 songs that helped me immeasurably, and I'm sure many others as well. And ofc all the other kickass songs they wrote that are still awesome now.
Out law and bleeding and superb but get lost because they have so many
Beautiful
Well said even though some people struggle to fight there demon's it can still be tough to fight through there problems even if they have got plenty of love and support around them 20 years ago I struggled with life and it does sometimes cross your mind to end it all I have a good set of family and friends but non of them ecer knew I was struggling I kept it to myself even though I knew I would get there help I kept it all inside because I didn't want to cause them any anxiety worrying about me touch wood I am better now and no longer hace dark thoughts about my life
James is one of my biggest inspiration and a hero in my life. True legend
James you are my favorite rhythm guitar player. Don't take that lightly EVH & Hendrix were spectacular too... it's your style in all is killer do what you want for as long as you want to do it my man you'll always be killer in my mind.
Lol you’re crazy dude but that’s your opinion
@@nicklebac6753 Hetfield has been known as one of the kings of rhythm guitar for a while, at least as far as metal goes. So many people have built what they do using Hetfield as the foundation for their influence.
@@feebypeels2883 yes I’m aware of this but his plain metal riffs don’t really compare to Evh and Hendrix’s riffs
@@nicklebac6753 Yeah, there's always someone better.

I don't want to live in a world without Metallica, I don't think any of us would know what to do if he stopped doing it.
@@AssNutz mustaine is older than hetfield and has also faced severe health issues...
@@AssNutz I listen to more Megadeth than Metallica.
You'd do what we Van Halen fans do....mourn the loss and be thankful for the time and music they made and play the hell out of every album!
We can wait for a tribute band
Tribute bands might be good, but not the same thing....
You saw me hanging out of the window of my friend's car going to Freedom Hall Johnson City,TN. In 89. Justice tour.Your tourbus had just turned on to the road leading to the concert, and you pumped your fist to me! One of the he coolest days ever. You acknowlaged me! Just me. Thanks James! That was corney, but, cool for myself! Seen y'all 4 times! All before the haircuts! Lol
Im so happy i still live in a world where metallica is touring and im finally getting a chance to see them can’t wait
AWESOME man, best of luck
I am very happy for you. You wont believe your eyes and ears.
@@wildae. thanks man
i'll absolutely be heartbroken on their farewell tour. i've seen them once during Death Magnetic but i'd still be crushed. they've been my favorite band since high school (about 08 at least) and i've never stopped listening. i've loved a ton of other artists since then but they always stay close to me
You have no idea...... Being born in 82 and 4 years later I was head banging to their music 🤗
The day they hang up their instruments will be a day I realize I'm getting old 😂
I love this guy James since 1984 when I first heard his band
James has got lots of love around him and he's got the love of all us metal heads from all around the world James and Metallica are metal and without them it wouldn't be the same
THANK YOU Papa Het for saying this 🤘
I'm an alcoholic and it's a thing that someone like Mr hetfield knows how I feel just wish I could put feelings into words
This comment section is pretty incredible and answers the question better than James could IMO. Not only does he work incredibly hard to turn his life around and face his demons. He took a whole bunch of us along for the ride. Metallica has taken so much shit from people over the years but I will always have infinite love and respect for this man, as a writer, as a rhythm guitarist, as a performer but mostly as a human. Good lord, I need to go to a metal show now.
Its like going to a meeting when you go to a show strangers jamming out like we have known each other our whole lives
This man saved more lives than anyone else.
I'm sure any metal band right now will say James Hetfield is the greatest metal performer ever. It's not even a close.
There's good, great, god tier and James Hetfield.
Agree
No. He's a sell out. They are sell outs. They haven't made a decent metal album in 30 years. If you like shitty rock garbage, they have you covered.
@@BruceLeeKingoftheSewers I thought they sold out with Fade to Black?
Because we lov u...& we have loved u for decades...we have no one better to hear
Sir James...much love and respect from this retired Metallica fan. Let me explain because you boys are still in my heart.
In '92...we "Bro-Hugged" at 3 Rivers Stadium at an after party for Guns n Roses. Was a Roman theme...was pretty cool. I walked in and You were shooting pool with what looked like an absolute Cherokee Beauty there on your arm. And my dream that night came true after whacking down a couple of beers from the bar lol...I got to briefly talk with you...and actually bro hug. You were very cool and gracious to me. Thank you for that! I've told the story for years. Still do sometimes...it was awesome!
However...and this is a big "HOWEVER"...
I believe that after living a life of pretty deep sin...Jesus, stepped in and intervened. A blessing that after 13 years...I'm just now starting to realize.
All of this is to help you know that there is "Something Else" that you can be doing now...
And that is....
Beginning to leave that world behind you and begin to serve, Jesus.
Lars and the boys, too. Including, Jason, Dave and Ron, too...if he's still with us.
And yes...contrary to popular belief amongst you fellas...this is actually possible!!! 😊
James...you will truly and finally find a peace that few men have known in this life.
I'm thankful to be able to still be breathing and able to write this to you. May it reach your heart.
Beginning to prayerfully read in, The Gospel of John, will allow, Jesus, to enlighten our understanding of Salvation through Repentance for our sins. Now spending our eternity WITH, God and Jesus... and not sadly without.
I love you James...and am thankful for this connection to now be brought to righteousness.
No small miracle here, friend.
God, loves you! Jesus, proved this love at Calvary.
James...
GOD, FORGIVES IT ALL IF WE ASK FOR IT IN, JESUS' NAME! I mean..."IT ALL!"...and I mean,"RIGHT NOW!"...if we sincerely ask. This is no lie.
Friend...thank you, again! And...
The Gospel of John...when you're ready.❤️
Thank you!
Playing in front of thousands is probably addictive. And lots of fun
Love you Jamez you've meant so much to me I'll never be able to fully repay you for the fire you set under this angry young youths ass long live Metallica / Metal / Music

Then create the new album already! 😁 🤘🏼
its already within creation, it takes awhile to do it too.
they must have done 4-5 songs now. Lars said they made their first one for the album like last year i think.
@@MrTongen theyve prob done alot more too, 2020 was a golden time for them to just crank out studio stuff and work in there.
Writing songs and making albums is a fucking grind lmao. I been trying to write songs and my head is on fire when I try lol
@@salembeats1875 yeah i feel tht lol, but metallica has so much material to work off of, it would be most likely fairly simple to get a structure for a song going. goodluck on your song writing tho !
He's unstoppable!
Boomshakalaka!
James, you are a great guy and a diamond in music - world and in life. We all getting older. Nobody is perfect. I hear your voice forever. Please don't leave the stages in the world. Best wishes for you and your family. Love you sooo much! 👌💓💓💓💓💓💓
You'll always see this in any line of creative work: Artists don't really stop. They might wind down their career or something, but it's rare that they really just "call it a day" and make a hard stop. - Apparently KISS is now really putting an end to their career, purely with the argument that it's just getting hard for them to wear those costumes and play at their age. Which is totally understandable. But they also had like two "farewell tours" before, but whether that was because they planned to stop or just for marketing, who knows. - Still, you'll see that happen a LOT, that some artists think they'll stop, but they can't help but just keep going. - Sometimes it just becomes very sad, like how Barry Gibb lost his brothers and thus band, but still has to keep performing because he just doesn't know what else to do (his own words). It just looks rather sad with him on his own (and a backing band), but he'd be sitting at home otherwise, which is worse.
I love him so much
Nothing sicker than that original white V
LoL.
“Original”
😂😂😂😂
They all have families, I would feel happy if they would retire and that would bring them happiness. But if they still want to play, from my selfish point of view, that's even better. They still have a lot of power and creativity. God bless them and their families.
You know you helped raise alot of us. Metallica was there for me through it all. Metallica is the soundtrack to my life. Metallica was there for me more than my own father. Thank you.
Pretty deep mate
Just had to add that I named my son James after you. One and only hero. Love you

Love you James 🤘🇦🇺
When was this interview from?
At least we share one particular work ethic. Will do the same thing that we love until we die.
This is old interview around 2016 I think ??
Love him
I've only come to really truly and fully appreciate Metallica at my current age. Of course I've heard their most famous hits numerous times, and I even saw them live during their European St. Anger tour in 2004. But when growing up in the 80's and 90's I was on the other side of the musical spectrum, mostly listening to Synth, New Wave and EBM. Metallica has always been there in one way or another though, and will continue to be even after they quit. They're undoubtedly one of the greatest bands in the history of music. And they seem to be good, sensible and honest guys - even Lars who has gotten a lot of trash thrown at him over the years. That sure calls for respect!
Favorite guitar players of all time:

yer the man sir
I love the attitude of James, and the attitude of everyone else. Although it is work for them to go up there and perform(especially at an older age), they have pushed through. I feel like right now they’re still playing shows and everything for the fun of it. Not for the money, not for anything else. Shows are a huge source of their entertainment. Honestly I wouldn’t blame them if they quit touring. They’re getting older and with that it gets harder to power through during shows. But although they won’t be touring for that much longer, Metallica will last forever in my heart.
Moth & Halo are Masterpieces.
What's the source of this, though?...
I Love you James!I Love you Metallica!
No James, you can't do this to us, PLEASE🙏🙏🙏 YOU ARE THE ONE👍 \m/ FOREVER

When you have lost everything, can't afford food, bills, entertainment or even sanity then you have earned the right to cry before the world. It is amazing to me that the most privileged and adored or idolized and applauded persons also want to steal all the sympathy for themselves.
Regardless of status and achievements, we are all human. We all suffer.
You don't get to decide. He can cry all he wants and you can whine all you want under his music.
Metallica's music has gotten me through some rough times for sure. And with 13 years of sobriety, I'm seriously rooting for James to stay sober and glad that he found a spiritual strength. Here's to hoping for a great new album.
This interview is a few years old I can't see him doing many more tours maybe just more studio stuff
That's what they said about Mick Jagger too
The band has already stated that they aren't retiring anytime soon. They, also, like to be on the road more then the studio. They like making new music but find inspiration on the road more then confined to 4 walls.

METALLICA are the Undisputed KINGS of Touring Bands!!
DOING IT SINCE 1981 ... & STILL GOING STRONG

He just expressed that he wasn't feeling all that great before a recent show, but explained that his band mates helped cheer him up. People are just blowing it all up and out of proportion because it brings attention to themselves.

So what do you call it when musicians stop making music and just live their lives? Assuming they don't keep creating other kinds of arts and selling it.
That's all he knows! Over a lifetime, many people do not know how to reinvent themselves or transition into a new phase of life. Many still struggle with their demons, especially rock musicians, and music had been their therapy and their outlet but perhaps they've become utterly dependent on it and when they cannot "do" music anymore, for whatever reason, they are suddenly helpless.
I
You know who else had struggles? Layne Staley.
“This one’s good… next one’s gonna be better” - James Hetfield before the st anger incident
They'll never stop they'll never quit cuz they're Metallica!
I was surprised when Sammy Hagar and Steve Tyler was still doing it. at my age now 62 what's Sammy's 75 now 78 Steve definitely pushing 80? you can do it!
For those that think oh what a baby just think of the first 5 albums that they gave you...Ride The Lightning is one of the best albums ever made...

I don't see James singing four horsemen or master of puppets when he's 70
Don't give up James. Black Sabbath who created Metal, has been around since 1968. Thats an entire decade longer than Metallica. Stay strong. 🎸
is this andrew bernard?
I wish James had a Heart ❤️ when Jason Newsted took the bassist position over for Metallica. Jason was a great musician I only wonder only if he wasn't tortured by James what Metallica truly could have been. If only 😪 opportunities only come once , it's ashame when it's truly so bad you choice to leave the band.
@James, Just get rid of that lowsy drummer you have and get a good one.... that will make you creative again.
Robert, Kirk and yourself are still amazing musicians.
Make an a easy listening album. Why not
No the music doesn't get better. I would say that the first 3 albums were phenomenal. The rest of the music is something that the new generation wants to listen to. He needs to stop playing already. He's already in his late 50's. He has enough money already and Metallica is no longer a speed metal band like they were back in the early 80's.
I got fist bump from him today and my right hand is suddenly 2x the size? 😂
