CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Gomez (Raul Julia) and the fake Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) dance the "Dance of Brotherly Love."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Inspired more by the 1960s TV series than by the original Charles Addams New Yorker cartoons, The Addams Family proved to be one of the more successful of the TV shows-turned-movies of the 1990s. The film opens on a recreation of the magazine cartoon wherein the ghoulish Addamses prepare to pour hot oil upon a group of merry Christmas carolers. After a series of vignettes which establish the characters of Gomez (Raul Julia), Morticia (Anjelica Huston), Wednesday (Christina Ricci), Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) and family servants Lurch (Carel Struycken) and Thing (Christopher Hart), the plot proper gets under way. A stranger, played by Christopher Lloyd, shows up on the Addams doorstep, claiming to be long-lost Uncle Fester. It appears, however, that Lloyd is a ringer, in cahoots with attorney Tully Alford (Dan Hedaya) to strip the Addamses of their fortune. In their usual against-the-grain fashion, the Addams Family seems to delight in the possibility that they're being hoodwinked-indeed, not even kidnapping or death threats dampen the Addams clan's joy of living (or should we say dying?). The Addams Family served as the directorial debut of cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld.

Raul Julia was electrifying as Gomez Addams.
This was the role he was born to play perfectly.
He was PERFECT as Gomez. To make a comparison, he was the Jack Nicholson's Joker, like John Astin was to the 60's Addams Family what Cesar Romero was to the 60's Batman.
He was a great defense attorney in Presumed Innocent too.
He was an absolute legend as Gomez, and I will be eternally sad that he didn't live long enough to play Don Diego (the role ultimately played by Anthony Hopkins) in The Mask of Zorro.
he was awesome in the role and his chemistry with Angelica Houston was just great.
[*]
This scene was proof he was Fester, because it was all muscle memory. Anyone else wouldn't have been able to do it. Memory loss or not.
Shaney Zamora not to mention if he wasn’t an Addams the knifes would have terrified him
That is indeed the plot of the movie
Or Gomez was just an exceptional lead performer and Fester/Gordon is a savant-like backup performer
@@robertflinch2447 apparently it wasn't the original plot, it was Christina Ricci who suggested it should be the real Fester, and they changed it.
Yes good observation
You could tell Raul Julia was a theatre/Shakesperean actor. His presence was both charismatic and operatic. We lost that man way too soon.
You know what they say “god takes the best first.” … and he took him from us too too damn soon.
Besides The Addams Family. Kiss Of The Spider Woman is his best movie.
He was 54 when he died.
@@LPMAN02 still very young
Rip
I love how much raw JOY Gomez puts into everything he does. The look on his face is pure excitement from start to finish. Raul Julia was truly THE Gomez Addams, no other adaptation will match it.
Tim Curry was close, though.
What about John Aston?
Totally agree 💯. Julia was perfection.

The Adams are true family goals as strange they seem from the surface. They are the most normal of all families. Being so happy in each others company. Really love all their hilarious wacky personalities and beautiful family bond.
Well said
I say this all the time: if you want true love, don't go for a 'Romeo and Juliet' type of love. Go for a 'Morticia and Gomez' kind of love. If I had to choose who was the best love story, I would choose Morticia and Gomez over R+J any day.
@@MusicOTNight2096 R+J is the OG “Twilight”, angsty feicing teenagers.

He's dead?
@@tuckerhawkey9561 Raul Julia died on 1994, a year after The Addams Family Values (1993) was released.
@@roderickconte7122 i thought his name was Raul
@@tuckerhawkey9561 oh yeah, you're right 😂 I'll edit it now
@@roderickconte7122 how did he die?
The best part is that this is one of the catalysts for Fester regaining his memory. Normally these dance numbers are spontaneous and pointless with exact choreography, but this one actually had a point. Gomez was accepting that this was Fester and Fester was remembering who he was because he dance this dance with Gomez as a child!
Yknow what I just realized, I thihk somewhere inside, Fester was alsost remembering himself as Fester and not Gordon, that how he was having so much fun
i thought he was only pretending to be fester i was confused as a kid
Jane b nope he really is Fester but he lost his memory leading to that woman raising him
Crude De Vil when i was a kid i didnt get it lol
+Jane b At the end of the movie, they revealed that Abigail Craven's story about finding Fester in the Bermuda Triangle was true, and that he had amnesia when she found him. She took advantage of that by leading him to believe he was her son.
+Rufio I noticed that recently myself. The knife part would have scared him to death if he hadn't been an Addams, and the fact that he was enjoying it so much should have given away the fact that "Gordon" was in fact Fester.
RIP Raul Julia (March 9, 1940 - October 24, 1994), aged 54
You will be remembered as a legend.
Third movie did not get made because the actor die
@@iancruz6617 Hmm he edited.. weird... clout goblin i presume.
How did I just find out that the actor passed from this comment? Dang. That’s just upsetting 😭 Rip. I’m thankful for now knowing but I loved him as Gomez. Makes sense why he had to be recasted now. He was and is Gomez. 😞❤️
Taught to us by our Cossack cousins, the Mamushka has been an Addams family tradition since God knows when. We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled. We danced the Mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper. And now, Fester Addams, this Mamushka is for you
Lovely
Cossacks and circassions best peeps ever.
Rest in peace, Raul Julia. He really did make Gomez Addams his own.
arbitterm Serveal factual questions about it. one; Nero didn’t even play the Fiddle and second there were two Waterloo battles
@@themusicmaster1077 i would think he meant they did the dance for napolion Bonaparte before he met his end.
Jack the ripper could have been interesting since some investigators surmised he might have been a practicing medical doctor in daytime life.
one thing i LOVE about this scene, is that it shows to 'everyone' that he really 'is' Fester.
His memory isn't there but his 'body' remembers everything, it remembers the motions, the actions that come from the dance, only an Addams can know the dance as Gomez says, its an 'Addams Family Tradition'. You can also see its really him in how everyone react, all the Addams don't notice anything is wrong, to them they know the dance and Fester is doing it perfectly. The one 'normal' girl in there you see looking in shock and horror that anyone would willingly let someone chuck knives at them, and then pull a hidden knife out and throw it at them to catch into their mouth (when for anyone else thats a death sentence practically) But everyone just acts 'normal'~!
Because only an Addams can know how to perform that dance, so because he's doing it precisely, without 'any' foreknowledge, is 'proof' that he's Fester and not an imposter (even if he thinks he's an imposter)
True, the way they told the story was very well done because it wasn’t someone entering in the room and say he is Fester Adams. They were able to SHOW he is Fester Adams with this 2 mins song. And thats the most important thing in movies. Is to show, not to say. I remember when I watched at tbe first time that during the all movie I really believed he was an imposter and after the party I was like: “wait, may be this guy is Fester”. And I was like a 11 years old kid.
Every wedding should have professional Mamushka dancers :D
Hold my beer
One had an amateur, I found a video posted on the site recently
Haha
Every wedding should have Angelica Houston playing the violin and sword swallowing
If I find my Morticia, I'll have an entire troop of dancers!
Raul Julia was such an immense talent. I can't imagine anyone better to play this role for both films. He was absolutely perfect.
Wish he or someone like him was in the netflix show.
I love the Adams, I love how deeply in love Morticia and Gomez are after all this time, I love how sadistic and apathetic Wednesday is, I love how much they care for each other, and add in all the morbidness and insanity this family is known for, I love them so much
*Addams
morticia and gomez are supposed to be the opposite of most couples. boomers hate their wives and gomez adores his :)
The hilarious part about the family is that, even though they’re super creepy and insane and morbid, they still worship God as their lord and savior.
To top it off they are the good guys.

@@rikosaikawa9024 He did nothing wrong.
But what if you were Undead?
Even as a kid, I looked at this scene and knew Fester really was Gomez’ brother. The Mamushka is in his blood!
I never understood how Gomez could ever believe Fester was a fraud after dancing the Mamushka.
Didn’t Gomez only believe Fester was a fake BEFORE this point? I remember Gordon’s mother explaining displacement before this point. Also, this scene was the one that made me convinced that Gordon HAD to be the real Fester after all. (I’m glad he was)

I love the Wednesday series but this will always be my Addams family at heart RIP Raul Julia
this was always my first clue that it was the real Fester for the simple fact that he knows all the moves without having to be taught like it's instinctual
The actors look they are really enjoying the whole thing!!!
I love it!
I want Raul Julia back. Such a dynamic guy and talk about a great performance from both him and Christopher Lloyd in this movie. Any man or youngster that has a brother should watch this moive. Great story of brotherhood. Even if its slightly creepy haha
Exactly! They are unique and monotonous....Raul is just unique!Great man and actor! R.I.P
We watched this movie at my grandmother's house so much, when I was a kid, that it drove my grandma absolutely insane.
Literally. The tape would end, we'd rewind it right away, and then watch it again, much to her annoyance...lol.
That's probably why I feel like such a kid again, seeing the movie now. :)
you can actually see Fester regaining his memories in the dance.
Such a classic film, I never never get tired of watching these films. When they tried to do a third film with Tim Curry & Daryl Hannah, it just wasn't the same. To me, Raul Julia & Anjelica Huston were PERFECT as Gomez & Morticia Addams. All of them were perfect in their roles!
Exactly though Tim is a great talent in his own right with his own spot on performances, it's obvious he was cast to mimic Raoul, same facial features..
There's just one perfect Gomez.
@@ppvk2610 ayo hol up. Are you suggest that John Astin, the ORIGINAL Gomez, was somehow inferior? Raul Julia was excellent, make no mistake. But John Astin was Gomez long, long ago.
Can we take a moment to appreciate morticia’s violin play? Thank you
sadly it isn’t accurate but it would be so cool if it were!
My favorite little detail in this scene, not shown here, is when Gomez mentions that Jack The Ripper is part of the Addams family.
Good point, that's before this

Christopher Lloyd really is spectacular in every single role he plays.
Those two really were amazing in their roles. As someone who grew up watching old Reruns of the show I was very happy. Christopher Lloyd is so underrated!!!
Mortica was so elegant and morbid at the same time.
At 1:24 there's a guy in the background who has REALLY LONG ARMS. lol watch and see.
Rhaegar Targaryen , I've watched this movie, I don't know how many times and I never caught that!!! You have a good eye!!!
and at 1:02 there's a guy with two heads in the right back part of the crowd.
Dude This Is The Zombie Tall Dude Watch The Movie XD
TheLichruler
I finally noticed him! Is he related to Flora and Fauna, the two-headed woman in the dress?
Rhaegar Targaryen I can’t believe I never noticed that before now and I’ve watched this movie countless times
As much as I didn't want to love this movie (old school Addams fan) it taught me a lesson that new can be wonderful. This movie (and the sequal) are still among my most treasured
This scene is more amazing when you see ALL of the film. Seriously, this is the ONE film where knowing the ending actually ENHANCES it.
I watched this in VHS as a kid back in the 90s. Now some 30 years later and I still get goosebumps from this scene.
This dance showed how Fester REALLY was an addams. He remembered the song by heart, even if no one taught him
I don't think I've ever watched someone have so much fun playing a part in film.
Ayyyyye did anybody notice the stunt double 4 gomez he had no mustache lol
Yeah. If you pause it at 1:02 (when it goes to wide shot) they are both stunt doubles.
+eleanor johnson Yeah they are btoh stunt double but it looks like he does have the moustache there? it's very small like gomez's but it's there
+Reece Hassan I've always thought the stunt double looks like Antonio Banderas.
They're actually a jugging duo called The Passing Zone
I hate you all. You just destroyed my childhood.
Raul Julia killed this role. I think because you can tell he was really having a blast being in this movie. He can seriously sing as well.
I never noticed how clearly you can see the stunt doubles.
Definitely one of the movie's highlights! Can you imagine how much fun the great Raul Julia (May he be dancing the Mamushka in Heaven at this very moment) must have had playing Gomez?
1:53
There is something so incredible about this scene. The choreography is so in-tune with the music. Even the background dancers with the tambourines. I love the tambourine rhythms speeding up in the beginning, the layered rotations at 1:25 and how Morticia winds up directly behind them at the end. Also very underrated and preceding this is the breathtaking transition from Morticia and Gomez dancing in the empty ballroom to the actual party as she pulls on a drape.
This movie made me realize at an early age that I could love music from different cultures. First time I ever heard something like this and loved it
The casting in this film was spot on.
If you watched this as a child you had a good childhood
It’s this scene that convinced me he was actually Fester. Muscle memory is that strong
The great Raul Julia!
Markus Gawor the best Gomez ever!!!!
I think one's opinion, on the best Gomez ever, will be down to whether you grew up with the tv show or the movie. Not with eveyone but with most people I feel that'll be the case.
I love both but I'd still give it to John Astin. I will admit to seeing plenty of Addams family repeats before the movie came out though.
I'll always remembered this movie he was the best actor the Addams family & Value

This is one of my favourite scenes of The Addams Family. I miss those days. The 90s were incredible. That decade also felt like it had magic in the atmosphere. I wish there was a time machine I could step into.
Everything now is so blunt, rude, pornographically amped up, movies containing the F-word in every other sentence of the script, it's horrible!
Goodfellas came out the year before this.
"Movies in the 90s were so much cleaner!" - someone who apparently only saw one movie between 1990 and 1999.
Yeah, Pulp Fiction was truly the essence of clean comedy. Come off it, dude.
"Omg I'm so quirkii and differant! Movies are so nasty now, we should go back to clean movies like Pulp Fiction!"
-You
People said exactly the same things about the 90s. And 80s, 70s, 60s...
This has always been one of my absolute favorite parts of the movie. I think it was what started my interest in dances from other countries / cultures. Possibly the music as well.
There will never be a better Gomez than Raul Julia
Anyone ever noticed the orchestra? The guy playing the basso with his hand off, and the guy playing the cobra? XD
Mister Julia as Gomez never stops to captivate the audience, even if you watch his scenes for so many times that even the most badass Darth Vader Compilations would start to wear off. Raul Julia was one true enigma.
You can just tell Raul Julia had a blast doing this scene! R.I.P.
The best part about the the movie is that everyone knows it's Fester.
'We gladly feast on those who would subdue us.' Now that's a proper family motto.
Raul Julia and Christopher Lloyd is perfection.

This scene is one of the reason the first Addams Family movie is my favourite and I can watch it multiple times.
I really miss Raul Julia, he was a great Gomez addams!!!
I feel like this seen proves the he( Gordon) is really uncle fester. It almost seems like naturally knows the dance because it’s in his subconscious mind/ blood.
Rewatching this towards the end, Morticia still isn’t 100% convinced that is the real Uncle Fester judging by the look on her face at the end of the Mamushka. 👀
I was a late 80s baby and I remember watching this movie when it came out on VHS and as memorable as this movie is, THIS. THIS PART is the one that was seared into my brain for life! I love this movie!
1:01... The least convincing stunt doubles in movie history
That was probably the absolute minimum the editor wanted to use there because it's not even close to looking like Raul Julia. I never really payed attention to it in the past I guess because I've only seen the entire film maybe twice.

Why was this recommended to me..
UA-cam you did a great job..
During this whole scene you can tell Raúl is having so much fun playing Gomez.
I had such an obsession with this movie when I was a kid. My grandmother had the tape and whenever we'd go visit her, we watched it endlessly. It got to the point where my grandma would groan and say, "Oh God, not again!" lol. She tried to hide the tape repeatedly but we always found it. She even tried to hide it under some loose linoleum in her kitchen floor once. Until my dad and uncle went to re-do the floor one day and they found the tape. Grandma only had one word for that: "Dammit!" lmao.
The Bermuda Triangle Theory can actually be proven as fact. The woman who takes in Fester a.k.a. Gordon, finds Fester in the Triangle with memory loss. She tells him she is his Mother and he is her son Gordon. Fester believes her and when Tully comes to them about the Addams' he goes to impersonate Fester. By this stage of the movie, Fester Addams has almost returned. This proves Gordon is Fester.
Someone told me this scene was "entertaining but ultimately pointless" and I was like I'm going to rewatch mostly bc I want to not need to bc I think we all agree you're wrong lmao this whole scene is just such Addams Family Energy and its amazing
literally the turning point of the movie, the moment you realize it IS him
@@urktheturtle2988 it really was just Such a scene. How anyone could not see this as Gomez? Idk but they are Wrong. Is IS him!
I disagree
This scene solidifies that this IS Fester, and that he's slowly remembering who he is, and realizing that he was not only mistreated by the woman who found him, but also that he belongs here with his real family
Sure, it's flashy and doesn't seem immediately significant, but without this scene, he would've slid back under Abigail's control and they'd have run off with their fortune
He may have amnesia, but his muscle memory jogged it back enough to make him pause when she demands that he abandon them and rob them like planned
I like how the violin Mortricia is playing is red and Gomez is the only person wearing said red
