Peter, that was a superb episode. Many thanks. This is a really good explanation and excellently detailed demonstration of your install. Like you, I'm a musician and not particularly great at DIY, but you've given me real confidence that I can fit a power tailgate lift to my M3 as well. I just need to save the cash to buy one. Hopefully your discount code will still be good when we're finally through the current COVID-19 crisis and have some income from business again. Once more, many thanks for a superb episode.

Well done sir 👍🏻 what a great video and all turned out well. I love watching your channel and have been for a while now. 1. Congratulations and thank you!
    2. The Canadian "winter" carport. Not something you see in Australia.
    3. You self-deprecation - If I can do this, you can. Seriously no. Your channel demonstrates you have technical skills, engineering knowledge and perseverance . Not something that we all have
    4. The shorting across the 12v battery was the deal breaker for me. I'd rather pay someone to do this because I don't have the skills or perseverance
    5. Great tips!
I will invest in installing this given cars 1/2 the price have self close boot lids. Not now, but sometime in the future.

Good video and fun 12 volt- :) Could really think of it only to close it automatically, so only the lock at the bottom needs to be changed and not everything else. I don't care that it opens all the way up and down, just locking it in itself when down would be nice ..

Always something to take away from your clips Peter! That wire feeder reel should be in everybody's tool box.
I have the aftermarket spring loaded opener (which at a 10th of the price and 10 minutes with a screwdriver for me is a perfect fit).
I collected a mail order from my favorite hardware store drive-through the other day. Popped the trunk, the guy loaded up and then stood looking at me without closing the lid. I guess a Tesla deserves a fully electric everything... 😁

In addition to taking the plug off to run the cable and reinstalling it later as you outlined at the end of the video, another method is to tie a short piece of string or ribbon to the end of your rigid pull tape and then to the plug.
That is just another way to reduce the bulk that has to be forced through the rubber conduit.

Recieved a Hansshow trunk kit in June 2020. In the Hansshow manual it clearly states that is is forbidden to pas the strut wire through the taillight plug hole!
Either you get a leak into the car or you will, on short term, end up with a short circuit. When a car rides there are thousands of small vibrations in the chassis and if a cable is wired like this the edge of the tailligt opening will dig through the rubbercable.

Well done.. very informative video (as always!) - I've been looking at installing a power trunk for my Model 3 for a while, think i might go for this - will give me something to do while in Lockdown ;-)
What do you think about the noise of motors - are they excessively noisy do you think?
Only thing to be careful of is parking close to a wall behind the car - the trunk lid swings out a little from the back of the car when it opens, so be careful not to park to close!
So.. are you going to do the power frunk install next? ;-)

    • @model3man
      @model3man  4 роки тому +1

Richard Cattell - hi Richard. I’m sure that at some point I will install the power front kit as well :-) no, I don’t think the noise is excessive. I think it’s different from the noise we’ve had before because currently there really is no noise with the standard struts. I think the motors are as quiet as they’re able to be and after the first few times I stopped noticing it again.

Nice job but I'd probably just pay someone that has the experience to do it. I used to do all my own work on cars and houses but as I've gotten older, I find that I don't enjoy it as much as I used to. On the Hansshow website, they list installers in several locations and the price seems reasonable if you're close to one or will be when vacationing. Sometimes paying someone that will stand behind their work is worth more than the satisfaction of a DIY project...IMHO.

I know my trunk release works even when the car is off so Maybe it doesn't matter to much. To bad you can't click a button on your remote to open and close. I love that feature on my Lincoln MKZ. Also, Hans show doesn’t recommend running the lift gate wires through that taillight plug area anymore. But thank you for the video.

29:40 I could see that coming when I 've noticed your rachet (without plastic handle). Disconnecting negative terminal is a good habit whilst working with electric instruments in your car, but in this very case, it wouldn't make no difference at all. You've shortened the battery negative terminal itself. You could disconnect the positive terminal and attach the wire whilst the terminal is off the battery - I know, it would not be very handy. Personally, I would connect the wire to the other 10mm bolt, closer to the thick wire, under the red plastic cover, so whenever you disconnect the battery terminal, the added wire wouldn't get loose.
I was going to mention that ground wire should be connected in a different spot - not on plastic trim, but I know that someone said that in comments already and you've changed it. 👍🏻
In general I would say your tutorial is very good. I know it's not easy to do staff and film them at the same time. You've done a great job there especially for a non-car guy!

Donald Cant - It’s a funny thing. I never missed power struts; never thought of them at all; once I did the install, and have been using them for several days now, I am finding them SO useful in a variety of situations - I guess it’s like running water; electricity; internet... Hi Ken. Thanks for your comment. We had a very heavy rain storm while I was out on the road two days ago and that very thought came to me. I checked in the back and pulled away the carpet and it’s completely dry. So the drip loop that I put when I installed it seems to work just fine as no water got inside. I am also putting some silicone rubber there just on the off chance - but I don’t see it as a problem.

Calvin Croucher - Because i didn’t watch the video from Electric Garage until AFTER I had already done it. The majority of other UA-camrs took it to the front - except Electric Garage who found a connecting point under the rear seats. That’s why I shared that in my recommendations at the end of the video. To save others from doing the same

I think it's a pretty good video, but then i like Model3Man's videos anyway! I do agree running the strut wires through the light connector hole does seem like it might cut through the wires at some point, but the Electrified Garage video method involves removing the rear bumper, which is quite a bit more involved! (Also i suspect why Peter chose not to install the optional foot sensor?)

Know thyself......and this ain't me. Too much trouble for something I consider not important.
Just saw the ending and learned of the 12v access under the seat which makes a lot more sense. Was quite shocked you had to run a wire up to the battery. And the activation button being placed on trunk lid was the sole reason for going up thru the corrugated tube was a very poor decision. I believe these two items should have been mentioned prior to showing the work you did which was unnecessary work. The price....holy shit, $500, you gotta be kidding me.
So, bottom line, for showing unnecessary complicated work and that rediculous price, I'm changing to thumbs down.
