Skyrim on the PS3 is still genuinely baffling to me, if I remember correctly, a part of the reason it runs so poorly is because Bethesda could not fit the game into the PS3's 256 MB of system memory, so it uses the fucking hard drive for memory whenever it runs out of RAM.

the Fallout games and Skyrim would also just fill up your save state file until it becomes too big for the ps3 to process and just freeze the entire system. Bethesda should have been legitimately sued for these ports.

Everyone blames the Cell processor for the PS3's poor performance, but in reality it was much more the RAM setup that is to blame. The PS3 had 512 MiB RAM in two separate 256 MiB groups, consisting of two different memory technologies. The Cell and the RSX were configured so they could both read and write to each memory group, but the latency, read, and write speeds would be very different depending on what processor was accessing what memory group. On the Xbox 360 you just had single pool of unified memory. And so, for the PS3 memory management was a headache, and next-gen games quickly gobbled what was available. Microsoft was originally going to put only 256 MiB in the Xbox 360, but game developers requested more. Thankfully Microsoft listened. Additionally, the 360 had 10 MiB of high bandwidth embedded DRAM in the GPU, which could offload some low level GPU functions from the system RAM. Additionally the 360's operating system was leaner. Only taking up 16 MiB of RAM, or so I've heard. Whereas the PS3's operating system used up over 64 MiB of XDR RAM and several MBs of GDDR RAM in the earliest versions, later updates would free some of this up for games, but only games made after these system updates were made. So PS3 devs had to make sure that the right game assets were in the right RAM for best performance, and not run out of RAM. Games like Skyrim must keep changes made to your character and game world in RAM to maintain the state of the game up to that point. When the game file becomes too big, because you played for hundreds of hours and made millions of changes to objects in the world, the system runs out of memory. On a PC, if you run out of RAM it will begin using your hard drive like RAM, but it's much slower. On consoles, that may or may not be happening. The Xbox 360 for example can play games without a hard drive installed. I suspect the PS3 doesn't actually use the hard drive as virtual RAM, but instead starts culling unnecessary data to make room. However, in a late-gen hardware pushing intensive game like Skyrim, there isn't much to spare. And so, important data in RAM starts being overwritten and the game crashes. What happens depends on how the software is programmed to handle memory management. But in some games like Skyrim there is no limit on how large a save file can become, so eventually you will run out of memory. The Xbox 360 will also eventually run out of memory, but it would take much longer. Perhaps longer than any normal person would ever play on a single Skyrim save.

Post-patch, The Orange Box is honestly not that bad on PlayStation 3, all things considered. You have to remember, Source engine games suffered on console hardware, just in general. The original Xbox port of Half-Life 2 arguably shouldn't have been possible, and it suffers in low quality textures, performance, and loadtimes. With the Xbox 360, ports of The Orange Box games, and Left 4 Dead, suffered from really inconsistent frame-times and muddy textures, atleast when compared to PC. It has only been more recently with the Portal Collection on Nintendo Switch where the experience is finally getting somewhere close to what you can find on computing hardware, and the Steam Deck is streamlining that experience even further now.

Ironically, I had more issues with Skyrim on PS5 with a certain DLC quest glitching and becoming soft-locked, mannequins duplicating previously equipped items corrupting the whole save file making certain player homes completely inaccessible.
Completing Fallout 3's trophies on the other hand, phew. Collecting all the bobbleheads was a challenge because ironically the game would freeze every time upon reaching Bethesda ruins. Where's Turok 2008 ? The game looks like a PS2 game next to the XBOX 360 version, the jungle is reduced to 2 bushes and one plant.
A lot of the problem the PS3 had even in the end of it's life-cycle was indeed the complexity of programming but also the lack of RAM, 256 vs 512, that deeply impacted ports to the machine because devs had to work extra to polish the games, hence why they don't ever bothered most of the time and just released them as is...
No don't get me wrong the PS3 was absolutely a banger when games where exclusives or get the attention they deserved, Wipeout HD comes to mind immediately and Ridge Racer 7 to this day is a marvel and it was a lunch title, fun facts if your TV didn't supported 1080P res, RR7 wouldn't turn on the highest graphical detail available and since in 2007 MOST HDTV's did 1080i max, that means no one played the game as it was intended for years!

I replayed the game last year on my modded ps3 with an ssd and the loading times are much faster(not like the were an issue) and a lot of the pop in issues and motion blur tend to resolve themselves. What I mean is, if you've played the ps3 version and you drive at top speed the motion blur is cranked to 100 to simulate speed and the framerate plummets. For some reason playing with a ssd compared to a hdd, seemed to eliminate those issues. I know it doesn't make sense since all that should be covered by the ram but idk it just made the experience smoother.
But then I played the 360 version for the first time recently on a regular ol hdd and it was just much better.

      @awii.neocities 9 місяців тому +2

It's actually smoother on an SSD because of texture and model streaming, as you had to install part of the game to a hard drive iirc. The 360 version actually has it worse with these issues, so I think you just got lucky. Funny enough, Sony had the last laugh as GTA V on 360 had even worse streaming issues, meaning that players had to install the game to a USB flash drive.

Sonic unleashed is another one. Given that it’s one of the most difficult of the boost style games the choppy frame rate makes it difficult to avoid obstacles and pits. Going for S rank on this game is a pain in the ass.

I played hundreds of hours of PS3 Skyrim from 2012 onwards, and the performance issues never happened to me. The framerate never dipped and there was no stuttering or pop-in or anything like that. I guess it's because I always liked to make lots of saves as a kid in order to look back on the thumbnail images as screenshots. Although it will crash/freeze once per ten hours of gameplay or so, and the loading screens are extremely long. There's also an annoying lag spike every half-hour or so if you have the on-menu autosave enabled. Overall it's a decent enough way to play the game and I still play it the same way now.
Edit: Don't buy PS3 New Vegas, though. Near unplayable and will crash every twenty minutes.

The PS3 was leagues ahead in raw computing performance (see last of us, GOW). The issue here wasn’t SPE vs CPU. It was the abysmal 256gb vram Sony shipped the PS3 with which was a BIG mistake imo. Sure the Cell could handle graphics well but Sony should’ve had the foresight and at least made graphics memory easy for developers. Epic games saved the Xbox by convincing Microsoft to go with 512gb unified vram for games like gear of war. Had the PS3 shipped with 512gb vram next to the godly Cell that would’ve gave 3rd party developers some leeway whilst learning the Cell in the beginning. And by mid life cycle games like last of us would’ve been the norm and late lifecycle games would’ve blown the Xbox away even further. It’s a nice little what-if I like to ponder. Also I believe the PS4 should’ve kept the Cell.

Great video, I enjoyed it a lot with your example footage shown!
What I couldn't find is a video on titles that got an extra treatment for the PS3.
    For example:
    - The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (extra polished, even better looking than on PC and X360)
    - Final Fantasy games (running and looking better than on X360)
    - RDR1 (worse overall, but features dynamic lightning only on PS3)
    - some games that are developed for the cell processor in the first place and got ported to Xbox (I can't think of titles rn, apart from FFXIII but there are some)
    Another video idea:
retail games that run in Full HD (Syndicate, Virtua Fighter 5, Ridge Racer 7, KoF XIII...)
Retail games with extra features exclusive to PS3 (stereoscopic 3D, PS Move features, included DLC on disc)
Maybe you'll find some forum thread that shortens the research. Those topics could become a series of your channel. 🤠

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 looks better on PS3 but the X360 version of NGII had advanced gore physics, higher enemy count and the corpses stayed on the ground instead of dissolving, what makes it an incredible experience on Series X' backwards compatibility, running at 4k/60.

The framerate can go from over 60 to less than 15 during a single battle. Yes, the framerate is completely uncapped on Xbox 360 and they left an FPS counter in the options menu. It's also worth mentioning that the PS3 version received a patch, though it didn't solve many issues.

The PS3 remaster of Sly 2: Band of Thieves also has an extremely common bug that was never fixed. At random points, the game will mute all sound, and if you try to exit out to the system menu when this happens, it causes the PS3 to freeze.

Also I've played both the Skyrim port and the Shadow of Mordor port on PS3 with a SSD with DRAM. The loading times for Shadow of Mordor are drastically reduced down to 1 minute to load in and 15 seconds for fast travel, and 7 seconds for exiting the menus. It's still bad, but just something interesting I noticed. Also if you lower the PS3 resolution to 480p. It's difficult to see enemies in the distance but it does look better? Doesn't run better though which is hilarious.
Skyrim I surprisingly haven't had any issues with outside one crash. I don't know if it's because of the SSD though.

And it was, at least was playable and I had fun, but at the same time I had a lot of frustation with that port. The game was good but it would freeze so much to the point I gave up using VATS to fight the enemies. VATS on the Mothership Zeta DLC was a nightmare, it would freeze 80-90% of the time I used it and I almost stopped playing the game because of it, was afraid my ps3 would die because of that game. I eventually beat the game and all it's dlc once and never played it again. Have it on PC now but didn't played it yet. This was one of the only times being poor helped me because if I had the money at the time I would ended up buying New Vegas and Skyrim and that probably would be the end of my ps3 (it is working to this day).

And I understand, because the 360 was always delivering, and we could say that in multiplataform development, the PS3 held back massively the 360 with many game not using the 360 capabilities properly so the PS3 could run the game decently. Eventually they started pushing more of both systems but it took a while to get multiplataform development with proper parity between both consoles.

This video finally answers to me why my fallout new vegas and Skyrim games went the way they did. Both of them broke for me on the ps3 and I wondered why. I tried re installing and it did nothing, eventually the saves became corrupted.
I also wondered why portal on the orange box was so choppy.
I ended up going over to Xbox with the series s and re bought some of what I had on ps3 on there with back compatibility, which was one of the reasons I wanted the series s in the first place.
One of the first games I got on there was portal and I was blown away with how much better it was playing! You didn’t mention it in the video but bioshock 1 played so much better too. Constantly had slowdowns on ps3 but never did once on Xbox.
I’ve recently bought red dead redemption on series s so I’m guessing that will be way better then the ps3 version too.

WRC 5 is migrane inducing. With most of these titles by lowering the resolution in the system settings from 1080p to 720p or lower to 1080i, 480p or god forbid 480i 4:3 this usually opens up enough room to get some extra fps. WRC 5 is one of those games where there was no hope. Some levels ran ok and almost reached the 30fps cap with the lowered rez, but other levels like Italy are so god awful that you'd be lucky to get better than 15fps after all the tricks pulled and even then you'd get graphical artifacts showing that it was falling apart at the seams. Even videos of overclocked cfw consoles had no hope of hitting a locked 30fps. Best chance to get some good performance would be to find a dex console with 1GB ram, or emulating if you have the means.

The original skyrim release crashed after 89 hours on ps3. The legendary edition struggled at 135 hours. After a few minutes the game fixed itself and was fully playable. Fallout new Vegas stopped working after 38 hours. Lego the movie video game glitched out halfway through on ps3. The Xbox360 version stopped working after 10 minutes. The wii u version struggled but still worked. Ratatouille on ps3 is a mess. The game forces the player to use tilt controls which doesn't work. Fallout 3 worked fine on ps3. The godfather the Don's edition on ps3 is a God send. The game plays great. Toy story 3 is great on ps3 and Xbox360 and a mess on wii. My issue with ps3 was high download times for expansion packs. Bayonetta is great on wii u. The ps3 and Xbox360 versions not so much. Elder scrolls iv oblivion on ps3 is better than the Xbox360 version.

I was aware of them because at the time, my friend's and I would bring our consoles over eachother's houses to game and they all had Xbox's. The performance was WAY noticeable with Bayonetta.

FNV also suffers from horrible savegame bloat, from time to time I replay it on the ps3, but after about 40-50 hours of total gameplay the framedrops get so bad and restarting only fixes the problem for about 10 minutes

I genuinely thought Skyrim was a bad game at first because I only had a ps3. I had a long play character (level 40 I think) and the final crash that it had was breathtakingly awful. At Karthspire with Delphine and Esbern, the Forsworn don’t even acknowledge us, 2 dragons appeared out of nowhere, one dragon suddenly starts flying backwards in a small circle, the frame rate drops like a rock and then freezes while playing a short part of a dragon roar constantly.
