    One player is comparing themselves to the players of the world. And seeing that since they are top 10%, they are good. (Social perspective)
    Another player is comparing themselves to the objective ideals for the skills of Melee and seeing that there is still so much to learn. And thus, that can see that they are at 20% of their potential skill. (Objective ideal perspective)

    2:44 I think everyone knows the graph looks like this but most don't ever really feel it in melee. I think it's something that doesn't really translate from watching game footage, you have to actually experience it (Not that I have ever been good enough to experience it in melee, but I think this applies to basically every skill in life). The feeling of being incredibly good at something and everyone telling you you are, but knowing the reality is you're only 100 ft up a 1000+ ft mountain because you've experienced first hand all the insane things someone *actually* that good can do.

    Well said and well presented! Melee is also a game where it can be very hard to tell what skill level people are at when accounting for region difficulty, individual consistency levels, bracket paths, whether you believe in netplay results or not, etc.

    I really enjoyed this video (and your other ones too)! I think the ladder analogy is important and often ignored or forgotten about due to the nature of melee. Getting to the skill level to then make the push for top 100 or the push from top 100 to top 20 for example just require leaps of playing and practice. Good work :)

    The problem is people defining "good" as being "literally top in the world"
    You can admit that you're good at a game but also that you're not top 10 in the world.

  • @Jowannabe
    @Jowannabe 11 днів тому +5

    As an unranked horrible doc noob. I have watched this game long enough to completely understand what you are saying. I might be ass, but I know that the top of the top is so pristine that players in the top 100 really struggle to keep up. For real just watch any tournament with the top 30 players on it. There are rarely any upsets and it's mostly the top 10 + a few others among the top 30 making it all the way to top 8. This reminds me of Kodorin deciding to take a break from majors recently, Kodorin is by far one of the best Marth to ever do it, and yet to me is impossible to compare him with Zain. I feel that the gap between these two is massive and they both are top 20 players.

    From the very few grandmaster players I've played as a plat 2 player I've only managed to beat one and I was very proud of that moment it seems though online slippi even if 2 people are the same rank there's a lot of players who feel underranked and some who feel overranked but that may just be because if they specialize in certain matchups and if they're just super bad at certain matchups which prevent them from ranking up

  • @eddiestilll

    You're an amazing Melee player, and this video was incredibly insightful 🙂. My friends outside of the FGC always tell me that they I'm "cracked" at Melee, and yes, while I can say I'm better than a lot (as a Plat 1 player, I hope it's not arrogant to say this), I can't help but tell them, I actually get bodied on a regular basis and I definitely feel bad more often than they would realize. It truly is the "stay humble" mentality, because you pretty much always run into a bigger fish in the sea. Heck, Zain has his own personal demons too (e.g. Cody and aMSa) and Cody too (e.g. morsecode762 and DK) and they're top 2 in the world. 🤷

    10% -> 1% is a 10x difference. 1% -> 0.01% is a 100x difference. The skill difference is very large, and none of us are good enough at the game to truly understand how much better the top 0.01% are than us.

    I had a long ongoing discussion with a friend about the existence of talent. Some kind of natural ability that gives someone an advantage in competition. My basic thought was this, it doesn’t matter if talent exists because you could never really figure out that you are talented at something until you put enough time into it to be good at it. The only thing that will ever make someone better at something is the amount of time put in (although I will say better practice will lead to better improvement).

    I have to say I've been pretty disgraced with myself about how I was playing in some tournaments or specific sets but never is it meant to be condescending or pretentious, it's being self-critical and, to some extent, humble. It's something that is best kept to yourself because it avoids a confrontation like the one you described here.
    However, I will also say that anybody who feels offended by a top player calling themselves bad needs to get a grip - for them to be insulting you they would also be insulting literally 99% of the melee population which is worse than them as well, why bother getting so upset over something so indirect and offhanded, it's not worth any time and energy - just put your head down and practice.

    I am able to combo as good as Zain
    1/40 times, when I'm practicing my combos in Uncle Punch
    When I land a beautiful combo, I feel like a god, even if I drop the string after 5 hits instead of doing a zero to death
    Zain plays as good as Zain 1/1 times
    He doesn't drop combos that often, he finds openings easier, his neutral is better, stray hits lead into long combos often
    The combos Zain drops he quickly rescues with backups, unless the person he's comboing is amazing at defensive play and escapes
    Zain's combos are also very deadly compared to other Marth's
    They end in dair, F smash, D smash, getting carried out to the blast zone or edge guarded
    Zain's combos get a lot more value out of them than any other player who isn't at his level
    Even if I can feel a hint of playing that well sporadically for a few moments
    It feels amazing
    But the skill gap between us is an enormous gulf
    I would need to study and practice with intentionality in order to even approach the skill Zain has

      When it comes to melee you have to accept being decent. Silver to gold rank basically. We all have lives and the liklihood of us to actually go pro in a time in the meta with stronger players than ever before is slim.

    • @frogchip6484
      @frogchip6484 10 днів тому

      @@DreamcastSoup Accepting silver to gold rank is pretty pessimist if you ask me, it's less about how many hours physically each day you spend grinding melee but for how long you do that - if you choose to stop playing after only a couple years then I'm not surprised you're silver or gold, it's hard to get good enough to get to the likes of masters/GM in such a short amount of time (yes, a couple years is a short amount of time for melee)

    • @DreamcastSoup
      @DreamcastSoup 10 днів тому +1

      @frogchip6484 tbf I didn't ask you, I've been playing for a couple months and I'm silver 1. I play every day / every other day and I don't have any real intentions of going pro because I play for fun bro. If you wanna get good then go for it but don't put others down that's shitty

      @@DreamcastSoup I'm not putting anybody down, but you can't just say generally that people should accept being silver/gold - that's totally fine if you don't want to get better but for those that do they shouldn't be accepting those ranks. Aim for the stars if ya want to

    You think about being in the future and looking back at yourself and thinking you suck, I think about going back to 2010 and being the best player in the world as a Plat to Diamond Peach. Which I could’ve easily done at my current skill level, I would’ve been a famous person if only I had the skill I have now back then, rivaling Armada or whoever. And you would too, you would destroy Armada in 2010 right now, just think about it this way instead.
