Melee seems to be the epicenter of so many different channels and groups here on youtube. And I'm convinced it's actually an SCP that subconsciously teaches people how to make content. There's no other explanation for why so many high profile youtube creators have direct ties back to the comparatively small Melee scene.

DK stealing your girl as a legit strat has got to be one of the funniest things.
Two things, one is that wusstunes deserves a shoutout for being the first to document Dk's rise 16 months ago in the greatest detail, 2nd is that I'm very bad at melee and barely understand what's happening in the fights, to see the reaction speed and strategy in slow motion in the Junebug vs Salt match was insane to see.

I genuinely don’t understand how a game that’s 20 years old with no balance changes and extremely minimal patches (ucf and the wobbling ban being about it) can still have hidden high tier characters, whether that’s Yoshi or DK. How did not a single person in the 2 decades prior not see DK for what he is? It’s not like he’s changed at all. I guess Bum got decent results for a brief period back in the day. But he didn’t change anyone’s mind about how good DK was.
my theory is due to the fact as good as DK is he has a lot of glaring weaknesses so i think i just took someone like june to really show what he can do
Seeing weird characters do well back then wasn't weird either. Zelda used to be considered good. The difference is that in the modern meta, you have to be an absolute madman to win using non-top tier characters. With how optimized play has gotten, it takes a disproportionate amount of work to get results with the more weird but good characters. I still believe Samus suffers from the same issue, needing a player like aMsa or Junebug

Melee's very deep - You can't just look at it and know everything there is to know. Turns out DK had plenty of neutral tools to develop that no one had ever thought to try

Competitive melee players were incredibly closed minded for over 10 years which is why this surge in under appreciated characters can happen. Hell, they used to throw stuff at players using some of the “boring” top tiers. The community is very weird but I’m glad that the new wave of players seem to be far more mature.
Way less to do with an attitude shift in Melee and way more to do with the advent of Slippi and increasingly good training resources.
I think a lot of people's experience with the Melee community is "A Melee player was mean to me online because I liked another Smash game" but the older scene wasn't closed minded about lower tier characters. You even have people like Leffen, pretty notorious for being an asshole, champion characters like Mewtwo because they genuinely believe the rest of the scene doesn't see the full potential.

Ya know, I used to play melee competitively, got PR'd in Northeast PA briefly some time in the mid or late 2010's. Played Samus and Falco, but very occasioanlly switched to DK. Always felt like DK would be better in the hands of another player that played him more regularly just by the fact that very occasioanally, I noticed he won interactions that other characters lost. He just needed someone to figure him out, and I love that he's now getting the attention he deserves.
I'm not going to get back into the game competitively at this point, and definitely won't get anywhere with DK, but I love to watch him in tourney.
I played in South Central PA around that time. What was your tag?
@@wafflebroz Hard to say because I switched around a lot, think in that time I went by the classic HIV+ because of melee character limit, but could've been Ubermensch or SteamNTrd with another generic in-game tag for gameplay. Didn't travel too much, went to State College for a regional once and didn't make it out of pools. Stopped showing up to NEPA locals because of schooling, work, and other activities I needed to prioritize.

I think the main thing that serves as DK's saving grace is that despite his flaws he still has pretty good mobility across the board for someone with his weight. He's faster than falco and the marios on the ground and has pretty good air physics.

My prediction is a Link Renaissance is also coming. Playing that character... it's clear it has more potential and setups and traps, but G&W might be coming first actually.
It's crazy bc Link is already higher than DK. I think Link is as good if not better than Sheik, but no one knows how to play him to the fullest yet
It's a pretty common mistake but the ice climber wearing blue or green is Popo, the ice climber wearing red or orange is Nana. In 2/4 costumes Nana is the leader.

I like donkey kong a lot, and back before I quit in 2012, i pretty much switched to him as a main. he has a lot of good tools and hard hitting bullshit, now we just need to get someone who likes him enough to problem solve every current matchup in the year of our lord 2024 and it's in the bag.

Correction, DK has ALWAYS been a good character. It's that recently people are actually starting to put in enough time and effort into pushing him far. I've been a firm believer in the character since 2002 And have mained him in tournament since 2006
