I love every little detail of Jess's playing, the subtle raked notes, the soulful and pitch-perfect bends, the general sense of musicality. I'm not 100% convinced that all this can be learnt. I think she's naturally very talented and has obviously put in the work to bring it all together. She blows me away as a musician.
Besides flawless technique she´s got the most precise bending and colorful phrasing I´ve ever heard. She definitely adds value to Govan´s original solo.
Over 2 million views and only 13k likes does not mean the majority did not like it, it means we 13k people have viewed this a thousand times at least. Spot on... When confronted by a straight up woman guitarist, no fuzz, only quality, it seems much harder for men to accept rather than a 15 y.o dude playing smoke on the water for the millionth time.... With millions of views.....Frankly a sad musical time we live in...
@@vinegum8835 In a way yes, but I am so happy and satisfied with what Lewis, Asato, Zytecki, Henson, Quayle, Misko, Fernandes, Le Page, Willson, Jill, Govan, Nito, Marcin, Abasi, Mancuso and many others have been producing last years. look !! Just look and listen folks... THAT's how guitar should be played. It sounds like a heavenly voice. What a perfect musician...the term guitarist is almost irrelevant. Stunning playing and artistry!
Love this video. Love her play style. This is very much the kind of music I want to play and write songs like t his. I can feel myself in this type of slow ballad saying in music what I couldn't say in words to the woman I love.
Absolutely amazing guitar and guitarist. I'm a Stratlover from Belgium and I have just discovered these guitars made in England. What a sound and the lady is really playing great with such a sensibility, I'm in love with this guitar !!!! Thanks for sharing you made my day!!! Hugs from Belgium
No matter how people comment on how tiny her fingers are or how her bending technique is odd to some people, she's cleary a freaking talent. No doubt about it
Like many shredders her technique is closer to classical guitar than blues. When you play with your thumb over the neck you don't have as much reach. As for tiny fingers, some of those Chinese female classical guitarists don't seem to have large hands and they play spectacularly. Again, for the kind of music she plays, dexterity and precision are more important than big hands.
***** I've noticed a lot of top guitarists have long skinny fingers. E.g. Eric Clapton. But a friend of mine who's been playing many years said of a famous guitarist that his hands were too big and as a result he had poor articulation. Maybe the main thing is to be alert to the mechanics of playing and make adjustments where necessary.
+DucksDeLucks didn't a certain james marshall hendrix have large hands? piano wise askenasy had a 11 note span didn't seem to hold him back and lastly "big ben" kept great time and had big hands.
I know what you mean, Ever since I started listening to strong influences like Jess and Guthrie.. shredding seems to want to be blown out of my mind, it's just so impractical for so many forms of music. Thanks :)!
Doesn't help women musicians at all when even the folks promoting them resort to language like "amazing female guitarist," when "amazing guitarist" is perfectly descriptive of what is distinctively special about Jess.
I see more male guitarists than female, so it makes sense that people would point it out. There are albino lions out there that are more rare to see than the common yellow one. Would you comment the same if they put “albino lion” in the video title, since they’re both lions?
To have this much maturity at her age is stunning, her phrasing is flawless as is her tone. Truly gifted Jess is one of the best new players out here , I first heard her do Room 335 a few years ago ,I've been so impressed by her playing since then, really what can you say when some of the best players support her & a guitar Co. makes a signature model for you , a bright future is in store for her and the future of great guitar playing is sure in good hands....
guitar playing has moved in to the arena of gymnastics...along with the rest of it,,.and why not ...nothing x with that,,,,however it's nice to hear these great players ( and there are so many) to apply feeling along with their technical abilities Ms Lewis is a pleasure to listen too....thank you....bob
Beautiful melodic lines - obviously horn inspired. Many of them I could hear being played by a tenor sax. I love the clean execution and the fact that she shows restraint - letting the piece breath. Really beautiful playing. Thank you for sharing.
DucksDeLucks Sure we would! This kind of guitarists are usually male so it stated as sthing unusual. Nice to hear and watch. In this case the term "female" is used to make a difference in a good way. I would dislike if this term or any other was used in a bad way. Also if someone is searching for female guitarists for some reason, the use of the word "female" on the title would help. We shouldn't make an issue out of this.
It sounds like it was intentional, though. Like, the kind of gritty, bluesy harmonic depth that came out of the sort of double-stop bend kind of thing against the open string just sounded so good I can't say it had to have been a happy accident. Which is even more inhuman. People who can specifically do the kind of thing where it sounds like an accident or it sounds like they're sloppy, but they're purposely playing that way? Those people are so good.
***** - Same hope anyone else has. If you want to get better, practice. There's really nothing that won't take loads of practice. That's part of why I have more fun playing rhythms, and short, simple, melodic leads. It sounds good and doesn't take loads of practice ;)
Jess always looks nervous or scared in the limelight haha...she is so good I don't know what there is to be scared about and she seems like a warm individual. You rock!
She got so much control over the guitar that it's like poor guitar couldn't stand anymore and give up. Me and my guitar we just fight and yell each other.
So much feel for one so young , after a friends guitar teacher sent me her long version of Larry Carltons Room 335 with Alex Hutchings i was floored and hooked, Hers is truly a gift from above, It must be awsome to be in that household or living next door and hearing her practice and play, She will a force in the music world for sure..
Female guitarists tend to be graded on a curve. You can see tons of videos on UA-cam of female guitarists poorly playing covers, yet they have tons of views and people fawning over them in the comments. There is the novelty of it, plus the usual guys letting their hormones do the talking. Jess is completely legitimate, though. She isn't just great for a female guitarist, she's a great guitarist, period. She still has to suffer the *herp* boobs *derp* crowd, though, which is a shame.
+Mark Lambert well it's because guitar has been a guy thing for some times, so there is a majority of male guitarists and a minority of female guitarists, hence the "bullying" or harassment, because our testosterone makes some of us kinda stupid toward any subject. Actually if you see it from the herpie derp guy point of view, a hot chick is a hot chick, no matter what she's doing, nothing surprising here, even if she was just 16-17 on this video.

Mark Lambert Personally, I think she really is a fantastic guitar player, girl or not, but I'd be lying if I didn't think she was pretty hot also, especially because of how good she is on the guitar.

+blankplanet Actually you do hear "guy violinist" sometimes, I wouldn't say the distribution is equal there :P but you're right, that's just how it is, there's more male guitarists out there and people just tend to point out things out of the "ordinary", that's just a human thing to do I guess
oh i recently asked what was going on over another video cause i saw guthrie's song uploaded but it's upload date was posterior to this one. what album is it from?
***** I'm not talking about the number of fingers she uses to bend (i use up to all four, depending on the fingering of what I'm playing). What I find weird about her bending technique is the fact that she keeps her thumb underneath the neck and doesn't use it to form a lever with her other fingers to facilitate the bend. However, as long as it is precise, I really don't care how it's executed, it was just an observation ahah
Rooreeloo she is simply sticking to the classical guitar technique which is to keep the technically perfect thumb position no matter what. Depends on people, some hate it, some love it. I don't, but as stated above, Darell played the same and he was a beast !
Inheritance Studio You never bend strings in classical guitar... that position is great for speedy licks with alternate/sweep picking but not so much for bending and some chord shapes. However she seems to be fine with that and that's what really matter. As I stated above I don't care: she could be playing with her feet, as long as the result is musically good I'm fine with it.
Rooreeloo Of course you don't, I play classical pieces on classical guitar. however, this is anatomically the best position, the fact we decide to not keep that position is cultural and due to what we are playing. You will never see anyone in classical guitar use the hendrix position even for a single chord that would be easy to play, simply by cultural habit. Regardless of what we are talking about, that lick at 2:01 - 2:06 is incredible
Jess plays with so much emotion. And every note is so clean. She makes the guitar sing. Easily the artist I enjoy listening to the most on UA-cam. Looking forward to seeing her playing progress in the future.
She plays very nice, has an amazing tone. But, like most of the guitar players, she has a lack of originality. I don't like the way she compose. Respect to her, though.
Im not trying to be offensive or anything, but what is it about her that is not creative. What are some of the few guitarists that you consider to be original?
jpturbo98 Ok, little buddy. I will explain this. First of all, I've heard lot of guitar players in my life. So, I can easily recognize when somebody is original or not. By originality I mean, to make music that mark a new way. For example, John Petrucci is original. His style was made by him... I know that might sounds obvious...but it's not. Another example, B.B. King is not original...Because he sounds like many other guitar players of his time...and before his time. People believes what the the media says, but the truth is that there are lot of guitar players around the world that people doesn't know yet. And they might never do...So, the more music you listen, the more you will understand this. And yes, this girl sounds like hundred other players...
HongwareeChannel The guy asked a perfectly reasonable question. No reason to be condescending, okay little buddy? And you do realize that you're listening to someone 16 or 17 years old, right? It takes years for anyone to find and develop their own voice; I'm sure that John Petrucci was finding his well into adulthood and is continuing to do so. How about giving Jess until she's out of her teens at least? (Although in my opinion she has already separated herself from the majority of other players in the subtlety of her phrasing.)
HongwareeChannel He never said age matters. He said it takes years to find your own voice. The reason he pointed out her age is because finding your own voice could sometimes take up to decades. Which in my opinion, she has.
Still the best version after all these years .. you go Jess
she plays the guitar like it's a saxophone. love it.
That's a shorter way to explain what I wanted to say = thanks
Yeah i think like that...
Great way of describing the sound
That’s a very nice explanation.. lots of sax lines in her playing..
Many guitarists try to achieve that saxophone sound
I love every little detail of Jess's playing, the subtle raked notes, the soulful and pitch-perfect bends, the general sense of musicality. I'm not 100% convinced that all this can be learnt. Best playing I've seen in a long time...
Over the top musical feeling...
Outstanding phrasing...
Brilliant performance!
So nice to hear a young person actually play the instrument, instead of just showing how fast they can play.
Amazing sound, phrasing and technique. Truly a guitarist who speaks through the guitar. Those are scarce.

Great timing and really tasteful playing. Very nice!

Why is every comment arguing the justification of female guitarists? A guitarist is a guitarist.

No. Question of sensitivity.
