Wonderful Slippery Thing is one of Guthrie's truly stunning tracks and Jess Lewis' cover for JTC Guitar is mind-blowingly good.

Probably my favourite Jess Lewis rendition, even if it was years ago. The control, immaculate precision, such feel, that vibrato! That's a real blokey piece to play as well. For such s young girl at the time, sheer genius.

Not an expert honestly. Just looks like standard or deluxe series to me. Pickups could be changed, depends on what year is this model. I believe they call this colour 'mystic red' at Fender. Looks a bit too metallic to be 'candy apple red'. I might be wrong.
I'm gonna go with the Standard model based on the plain black fret dots and the more basic bridge saddles. I could be wrong.

But then again, 1) it's Guthrie's song, 2) she's only 18 years old while he's been playing for 40 years, 3) music is not a contest, and 4) no one ever said, anywhere, that someone was better or could play Guthrie's songs better than Guthrie. Oh, and while we're here comparing Jess to Guthrie, she's working for JTC, she's getting better, and hundreds and thousands of people are watching her videos.

What blows my mind is that Jess started playing the guitar in 2006, so she only had 4 or 5 years of experience in this video. Saying practice makes perfect is one thing, but that is a lot of talent right there.

Damn I almost jealous-because I could never really get those sweeping arpeggieos very good-maybe halfass, but allways workerd a lot, hands were tired, and just didn't have time. I'm 50 now, and my fingers just that dexteriouis anymore--rats! You improvise well girl. I repect the fact you learned the song-but you did'nt go all out to try

There are other young female guitarists on UA-cam whose playing sounds like they are exercising where the fast notes show little emotion. Jess at a young age understands it is about playing music that reaches into the listener's soul. And she does that superbly! Some musicians will only get so good with practice. In her heart she has that magic but elusive thing that can take her to the next level. She is a very special talent.

Guthrie Govan - what can you say about him? He's fantastic.
But I've watched her plenty enough now to believe that she's easily one of the best players out there anywhere currently including Guthrie Govan. What she's got that's superior to others is her precision and timing- she is the best at that bar none that I've seen. Because she uses her pinky less she has to move her left hand around a bit more. But watch her hand, not her fingers... it actually looks like someone is speeding up the video but they aren't; that's her reflexes and they're incredible. Also she's really perfected her strat sound - it's got SRV to it, but more because she plays in a bluesy/fusion style. Can't wait to see how she improves...she's so young.

Holy moly! Even pulled off Guthrie's wacko sweep tapping lick at 1:27 coming out of the 1st "bridge". Practically flawless performance! Heck, you expect a live cut to have a few "whew; just made it" moments in it. As far as I'm concerned, she pulled it off amazingly well.
Your version of this song sounds better than Guthrie's, I like the tone you are getting from your gear, I can say your tone in general has matured a lot.

The truth is: In melody building and phrasing she is actually (sometimes) better than Govan ... but on that level they both play it doesn´t matter.
I agree. She's so good, I can't believe she's not widely known. She could play for any major band out there - any major singer if she wanted.
The difference is that Govan wrote this. Many can play this but few can compose this. She's sick in the head regardless.
Theosis78 it's guthrie govan's piece i still prefer him to play it ;) but she plays in a different way sometimes and it makes it very cool too.

Theosis78 I believe they both have their own styles - Guthrie can play in a way that only he can; Jess can play in a way that only she can. Now for us, in choosing the 'better' player, I think it all comes down to preference.

I'm with you- she's phenomenal. Like, I think one day soon what's going to happen is Clapton or some other well established, respected player is going to see her and promote her. She could be on crossroads, for example. When that happens she's going to get picked up by a major band. I used to go to the 55 Bar in NYC and see Mike Stern. One night he brought out this young attractive girl playing drums. She was unbelievable and - about 21-22 and playing with Anthony Jackson, no less. I talked with her afterwards and she was just a kid but I knew she was way talented. Within a few months she was asked by Beyonce to join her tour. It's Kim Thompson, now she's on the dumb Seth Meyers show- but watch her live playing jazz and he's unreal

Both sexes have hands, fingers and souls. I see no reason to give her special credit for playing this. because she's a girl. As a guitarist, you can play whatever the hell you want, as a professional this was out of her league. Her interpretation was funky, but her tone was weak and flat, I'm afraid.

Ok anyone that said that the tone and vibrato is better than Guthrie's should really be quiet. But then those saying that she shouldn't have attempted this as she can't play virtuoso should also keep their comments to themselves. She played this with immense control and adding her own flavor to an amazing tune by Guthrie. Not many people can add their own identiy,and studying Guthrie's books I know one thing. He emphases on having your own sound,and Jess certainly has that. Well done young lady.
