Rose tinted glasses. What a silly comment. Barnes was aweful for England. He scored a couple of goals, but REGULARLY got a rating of 4 out of 10 in the match reports! He was always trying to dribble his way past everyone and kept getting caught because he tried to always go that one man extra, and would end up LOOSING the ball. He was nowhere near as good as Charlton, Robson, Gazza, etc.
One of our finest but most underrated mid-fielders..people talk the likes of Gerrard and Beckham but Barnes,in his prime, was right up their with them..he was absouluely phenomenal.

Yep, the 1990 squad was designed for the 4/2/3/1..but Barnes and Waddle needed to be played as inverted forwards, closer to midfield and able to interlink with Robson and Lineker up front .
