Chuck did not just use the harmonic minor/minor scale. Don't know if you're just trying to be an arrogant hater, or overly dramatic about semantics.
You can attribute that to a combination of the heavy use of minor scales and how we've been exposed to similar sounds in horror movies. It makes me really reminiscent of Tubular Bells from The Exorcist.
I knew Chuck was a pretty good lead player, with his unique Phrygian-esque phrasing, but this video showed me that his mastery was also evident in his rhythm playing. Truly a terrible loss. Of all people, it happened to one of the best. Rest in peace, Chuck Schuldiner.
I learned some of my first Death riffs on an acoustic guitar just because that’s all I had at the time and I remember how surprised I was that it sounded so good. Most other metal left me unsatisfied without being plugged into a Marshall stack but I enjoyed just sitting on the porch playing Death on acoustic.
I think best way is to practice playing without distortion because every mistake is very obvious. Your picking is spotless!! Thanks for showing how beautiful is Chucks music.
Maybe cause Chuck used a lot the fifth mode of the Harmonic Minor scale, the Phrygian Dominant. Well Phrygian Dominant is widely used in traditional middle eastern and southeastern european music. But the intent is not that, to make some middle eastern stuff no. But without distortion the middle easterness of this scale sometimes gets unlocked. Chuck loved it cause it has this particular evil metal flavour if you know how to compose with it, and not play accidentally sacred hebrew chants ahahhahahaa.
Everytime I hear Chuck, I just wonder bout the writing process. Sure, it's difficult to play and sing on top of it but I wish I could get into the headspace that can create something so unique, original, deeply emotional and fit it perfectly in a context of extreme metal. It sounds so good clean, sounds devastatingly aggressive with distortion.

Another thing I love about Chuck's writing is one thing we as classical musicians focus on soo much more than technical proficiency..the feel...He never cared for highly impressive tapping, sweep picking, or blazing scales.
All true but he definitely did plenty of shredding, in fact I have to assume he improvised most of the solos because he's clearly a master composer, yet they aren't very well composed

This is awesome. This is why I spend time trying to write metal songs on an acoustic, or at least really focusing on the lines as opposed to the sound of the chunk or the distortion. Too many bands hide behind the distortion. Strip it back and a lot of it is really boring.
Doing these riffs without the distortion definitely brings out the technicality and geniusly written melodies and guitar lines that probably would be less prominent if overlayed with distortion. Amazing playing!
From a old metal head and HUGE fan of death and chuck you played it all very well and thank you for bringing some light to a severely underrated musician
Let's be real, Chuck is no underrated musician. The guy is an icon in the metal community and any attack in his side will end with metalheads eating you alive.
Definitely wouldn’t say all riffs have to sound good unplugged because gojiras riffs kick ass and I know for a fact they would sound weird without distortion
@@jrk10 Clearly you've never played Gojira unplugged lmfao. One of my favorite things to do is play Gojira on acoustic. The grit of the steel adds texture and sounds amazing. Or Gojira on a classical guitar is great too. If you're not technically trained, yeah, everything "unplugged" sounds bad if you don't know your dynamic tone well
This is just what us guitarists of heavy/ speed metal need! People who claim it's all just playing anything or whatever can now see the complex art. Unleashed is the melodic masterpieces shown in the raw form, there's no "hiding behind distortion" as many accuse heavy metal of. Bravo!
I forgot how beautiful Chucks melodies and some of the arpeggios within all of the intricacies of his work and compositions, I've not been able to play the guitar for 10 years since a severe hand injury, i miss being able to even recreate 1/10th of his work with my own hands, RIP Chuck, thank you for the beauty in an ugly world.
Chuck is probably my favourite guitar player ever alongside Ben Weinman, Kevin Shields, Johnny Marr and Kurt Ballou. Death doesn't have one dull moment in their discography, every album is 10/10 in my opinion.
I love Death, but I’d say that Spiritual Healing and especially Individual Thought Patterns definitely are some of their weaker records and are not 10s imo
For many years, I've played Tool, Pantera, Megadeth and others on accoustic guitar. For much the same reason; impressive guitar compositions do not require distortion.
Dude, you NAILED those riffs. Chuck is without a doubt one of the best and most underrated guitarists of all time. This is awesome. This is why I spend time trying to write metal songs on an acoustic, or at least really focusing on the lines as opposed to the sound of the chunk or the distortion. Too many bands hide behind the distortion. Strip it back and a lot of it is really boring.
Dallas Bland So true!
Bands that just chug are so boring
Doing these riffs without the distortion definitely brings out the technicality and geniusly written melodies and guitar lines that probably would be less prominent if overlayed with distortion. Amazing playing!
From a old metal head and HUGE fan of death and chuck you played it all very well and thank you for bringing some light to a severely underrated musician
Let's be real, Chuck is no underrated musician. The guy is an icon in the metal community and any attack in his side will end with metalheads eating you alive.
Solid playing ! Kids, if your riff sucks unplugged no level of distortion can fix it
Definitely wouldn’t say all riffs have to sound good unplugged because gojiras riffs kick ass and I know for a fact they would sound weird without distortion
@@jrk10 they sound really good without distortion wdym
@@VicSellsPeace they really don’t because gojira isn’t a melody heavy band
@@jrk10 Clearly you've never played Gojira unplugged lmfao. One of my favorite things to do is play Gojira on acoustic. The grit of the steel adds texture and sounds amazing. Or Gojira on a classical guitar is great too. If you're not technically trained, yeah, everything "unplugged" sounds bad if you don't know your dynamic tone well
This is exactly what caught me about this band. I don't really listen to death metal at all, except for Death
Check out bolt thrower
Chuck's passing away was the biggest single loss to metal scene since Cliff Burton. I miss Chuck. He was a genius.
The single 2 biggest losses in the entire world of metal.
Sounds like they'd fit perfectly as the soundtrack for a dark fantasy setting
I genuinely write my fantasy to this man's renditions of death, they are perfect XD
and just put the video on loop for awhile lol
Medieval tones to it... never even noticed >.
This is not Death, it is Life
I would kill for all the albums played like this
Yes that is true. A gold mine made of melodies full of grace I am sniffing here.
chuck uses a lot of eastern scales and they sound so mysterious and ominous if played right
Chuck is probably my favourite guitar player ever alongside Ben Weinman, Kevin Shields, Johnny Marr and Kurt Ballou. Death doesn't have one dull moment in their discography, every album is 10/10 in my opinion.
Kevin shields and chuck on the same list is very based
@@shroomlord682 😂
"Death doesn't have one dull moment in their discography, every album is 10/10 in my opinion." Very true
I love Death, but I’d say that Spiritual Healing and especially Individual Thought Patterns definitely are some of their weaker records and are not 10s imo
@@blindbobappreciator6765 Individual is awesome, spiritual as well
For many years, I've played Tool, Pantera, Megadeth and others on accoustic guitar. For much the same reason; impressive guitar compositions do not require distortion.
Those riffs sound so magical without distortion. Thats how you know Chuck made masterpieces.
Those riffs from 'Flesh and the Power it Holds' sound like the end of the world. Too awesome.
I would listen to an entire album of clean Death covers done like this. Great stuff man. \m/
crystal mountain's lyricism is absolutely stunning beauty
tears, it brings tears to my eyes to listen to the brilliance that was Chuck.
Without judgement, without distortion, without Chuck. Awesome video series brother
Riffwork that sounds good in clean tone is evidence of a good riff.
Plus I'm a sucker for clean tones.
Dude, you NAILED those riffs. Chuck is without a doubt one of the best and most underrated guitarists of all time. He’s The Godfather of death metal, the guy basically created the entire genre, and he’s still the best example of the genre’s best. wherever he is, Heaven, hell, limbo, passive non-existence, I’m sure this video made him smile.
I subbed. Keep up the good work.
flesh sounds so depressing and empty without the disortion. chuck clearly was a amazing man and guitarist. miles ahead of his time. chuck will forever live on in the memory of his music and its fans!
Flesh and the Power it Holds is just absolutely massive the passage @2:52 is still on of the best riffs of all time
Seriously Death is one of a kind. How could you find a death metal song sound perfect without distortion?
Buddy, you got me into Death with this video and really, I can't thank you enough.
You wont ever find another comparable band. Ive been looking for years and nothing stacks up
Chuck and Quorthon are the gigachads of metal
Its quite melodic. Always said that in my book, the best riffs sound great without distortion too. Nice work man, awesome playing!
The Flesh and the Power it Holds is so beautiful!
Symbolic, Human and Sound of Perseverance are my favorite albums. Nice clean work you did. Phenomenal
Perfection... thank you for reminding me why Death was one of my fav bands ever. Please do more... this is so good I think to hear entire albums like this would be one of the biggest things came out of metal ever! I can litteraly hear this played even as a classical music with entire orchestra now! 😳
I legitimately wish we could have gotten a Death unplugged set
God i wish he was around to do a clean album. Sounds so good and super chill luv it.
Brother keep it up, I am a classically trained guitarist who loves metal and for years I would always get my parts clean there on distortion to be honest with my playing. Best way to practice! I learned a lot of his stuff first on acoustic!!
Bro I just can’t stop listening to this, I’ve been listening to this video like since it’s release.
The official Death facebook page shared this! ;P

Fuckin Metal dude!!!
This is the vid that exposed me to Death. Watched this about a year ago. Thank you
Chuck Schuldiner was such a brilliant musician. This proves it!
Proud to say i saw death live,in 98.traveled 300km to see the gig with a buddy
Whoooo Hoooo!!! Fucking epic dude
Thanks for making this. This is the first time I've EVER listened to Death. It was a cool experience being able to hear an approach that highlights the articulation on the notes and melodies in a clean tone, 👍
Death is a legendary band, one of those "untouchables" in metal. I hope you enjoy their catalog!
All while laying down epic vocals live and not missing a beat!! He was truly a brilliant Human Being and is surly missed. Rest well Chuck! Your gift to this World will pass the test of time. Thank you!
This is great stuff! Honestly so many of these kinds of videos are for the sake of comedy, to see how goofy the music sounds without distortion. But you really did the intricacy and beauty justice. Way to go!
On sort of the flipside, I've always wanted to do serious metal covers of non-metal songs. It's amazing how some things sound in a different context.
Chuck was an genius level artist, he was creating art...
Truely one of the artists of all time, up there with the others
Chuck was a God
Thank you for getting me into Death and the BRILLIANCE of Chuck
