    I never noticed the amazing grand piano part, which sounds like some extra piece of classical music.

    The gist of the comments is "yeah, it's good but ...." followed by a silly critique. I've worked out some of this stuff not to your level but still have a taste for the tremendous amount of work involved and then to follow up by publishing it out on UA-cam is not something I dare do. You are polite and gracious much more so than I would with the armchair critics. Thanks for the tremendous amount of work. It goes along way with Tony Banks devotees.

      Thanks. It is hard work. I’m the music director for the Genesis Show, the tribute band I’m in, so I’ve already learned everyone’s parts, rehearsed them, and played them live with a band. I do these videos to educate myself and others and force myself to practice. I’m happy to share what I know and talk to people.
      Genesis fans are usually very partisan. It’s nice to talk to people here who seem to appreciate Seconds Out and Three Sides Live equally like I did as a child. I’d rather deal with the armchair critics than people arguing over which year Genesis betrayed them.

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 Partisan indeed. I was among the everything after And Then There Were Three is 'too pop and not REAL prog' camp. Of course I never gave it a proper listen. Years and years later when I finally started to actually listen to it I found how narrow I was and now enjoy it all. I prefer the earlier stuff but have to admire it all.

    How the piano lines are great... thank you

    The magic of CP-70 piano and synth mixed with the magic of the guitars (Mike Rutherford's with some Daryl athmosferic soloing) of the intro is a perfect build up. Even in the farewell tour it sounded pretty cool, my only problem with that version is the finale, it's abrupt and forced. Phil could sing "Guide Vocal" in the lower key, it would be easy for him and it would make a more climatic ending. (And a lot easier than playing the original The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway next, despite I just noticed he sang it revamped in the same key they would perform it after this song, since both of them were transposed to C.)
    Speaking of that, remember we were agree that performing the original (1977-1982 and 1992 live versions of) The Lamb and Watcher of the Skies (obviously transposed) would be a nice idea? I first thought on Dance on a Volcano as an opener, but with Duchess as an opener, it should be a nice ending medley combo (and a different alternative to having Los Endos as pre-closer). So it would be this way:
    Duchess / The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway / The Watcher of the Skies (ending)

      Duchess is one of my favorite Genesis songs. Now that my band has played the 1980 and 1981 tours live, I can say that either medley has us exhausted at the end! Behind the Lines/Duchess and whatever comes after are really hard to play.

    The top of the phase shift is maybe a little too wet, but very accurate timing and timbre.

      One thing they didn’t capture with the Quadra phase shifter emulation is the warble as it turns back on itself at either extreme of the curve. The original almost has that Univibe quality in that area.

    Tony's favourite Genesis track. No accounting for taste I suppose. I mean, it's good, but...
    What are you singing into the vocoder during the chorus btw?

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  3 роки тому +3

      Behind the Lines/Duchess and Dance on a Volcano were my bucket list songs when I joined the Genesis Show! The vocoder parts are mostly “dot dot” and “wwwwaaaahhhhh”, but also echoing the pronouns Phil sings, “ev-ry-bo-dee” etc.

      It's my 4th favorite genesis song. I quite agree with Tony. It's not good, it's fantastic.
