    Another great job Matt! Along with 'You Might Recall" I always think of "Me and Sarah Jane' as the last truly great Genesis song. Harmonically dense, complicated and idiosyncratic and at 4:10 one of THE best Banks chord changes!

      I had to look that up, I don’t know his solo stuff. You’re right. Also reminiscent of the pre chorus to My Girl.

    I know I’m late to the game here but that right hand syncopation in the beginning was impossible for me to play. I started learning this song back in the early 90s and gave up. So kudos to you!!

    This is one of Banks' weirdest harmonic endeavors. But I love the song. And your transcription is great! It sounds so odd in parts, but when all the other band parts are added, it really makes all sense...

    I have loved the arpaggiator section of this song forever!!! I have never been able to duplicate it however. I think you are close but I hear three different things going on in the recording. I am not sure of course and I think you are close. But I am not 100% sure there isn't a third arp going on layered in this section... I wish I knew for sure... lol

    Matt?? You are theee TRUE Tony Banks God. I hate to say it but as a player (and a HUGE Tony Fan) The Lamb, Firth and Cinema Show sound and are easy to play compared to this.
    So sooo thankful for your talent and opening up the Holy Grail of Tony Banks.
    Thank you EVER so much.

    Bravo!! I just really started getting into this song only using piano sound one keyboard for now but always loved listening to it wasn’t until recently didn’t realize how fun it is to play just thought it was very complicated to create though Tony Banks was good at making something like this. Just like how it carries itself!

Great job.Thanks for all the great music and great instruction. Now if I can play even half as well as you and Tony Banks I would be happy.

    Awesome video Matt....it never ceases to surprise me how much of what sounds like keyboard is actually on the guitar...this birds eye view takes a lot of the mystery away from how the heck they produce all that sound live.

      That is the hardest part about learning this stuff. The overlap in instrumentation and sounds. Definitely one of the factors which makes the band unique.

    I really love your work Matt! I can't seem to figure out the Prophet for the last part of this song. I know it's based off the organ patch and the cutoff, but the ADSR seems to be different at the end. What exactly are you changing when you get to that last chord progression?

    • @samanipreston
      @samanipreston 2 роки тому

      Same with No Reply. That's definitely the Prophet organ with some detuning, but I can't seem to get the overall sound right.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  2 роки тому

      Yes, it’s the same organ patch with a different envelope that is set to “wow” the filter more, and I have it as a separate preset which you see me switch. This is something I’m not 100% sure about, I’m just matching what I hear on Three Sides Live. On the studio version there is also a strings patch doubling, but I haven’t heard it on any of the 1981 live recordings.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  2 роки тому

      No Reply is probably a Prophet harpsichord/clavichord/electric piano patch that’s tweaked. I can’t remember if I referenced the original patch on my video.

    Excellent as always.
    It caught my attention, i've seen a Korg/Arp Odyssey in your set, now it's the Behringer model. Did you change it for any reason?
    I guess the Behringer's capability of saving patches and having an arpeggiator is really nice.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks. I still have the Korg Odysseys. They’ll appear soon. If you’ve seen my other videos you’ll see I’m organizing these by amount of gear I can fit into frame and mixer inputs! I’m aiming to finish Three Sides Live over the next couple weeks and I’ll show how the Odysseys work together to create the Quadra lead section. Behringer cannot save patches though. Sound of it and the Korg versions are identical, but the MIDI out, full size keys, effects, and arpeggiator/sequencer give the Behringer the edge.

    • @joaquinvelazquez913
      @joaquinvelazquez913 4 роки тому +1

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 Oh i see! Damn i thought the Behringer could save patches, i guess neither the korg nor the behringer are good good for live use, as tony changed patches quite a lot. Thanks for replying!

    Great ! Thanks. I'm wondering, which output(s) you take for the CP80 ? XLR I assume, 1 or both ? Cheers

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  3 роки тому

      Only one XLR output from the CP80 (since I’m not using the piano’s stereo tremolo mono is fine), and the Boss CE-1 chorus is in the stereo effects return of the mixer.

      3:50 and at this point I think there's also some vocoding. In that case, I think he only used the vocoder section of the VP-330 here and on the last section of Duchess (on Genesis albums), right? His most obvious use solo is on By You, from The Fugitive.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, on the studio version of this song. It’s also on the Abacab title track. Live vocoding only on Duchess (I do that in that video). Interesting thing about this live version: Phil sings one of Tony’s keyboard phrases. The more subtle thing is that for the vocoder part you mention, Mike plays those chord rhythms on guitar.

    • @MrHermanRinger
      @MrHermanRinger 4 роки тому +1

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 yeah, I like that line sung by Phil. I haven't heard other live versions but that line sounds very integral to the song. Everytime I hear some Genesis live songs where Tony couldn't play a line, I can imagine it anyway :p

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  4 роки тому +2

      I always learn the live versions for my band, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he played piano throughout on the record. This song definitely belongs in the same category as Mad Man Moon, One For The Vine, and Burning Rope. Probably composed on piano, which was the live tracked instrument with the band, synths overdubbed. Then, live versions of OFTV and BR pare away the piano parts.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514

      Herman Ringer yes, CR78 on this and Duchess. I have the Forgotten Keys 3rd party library for Kontakt, which is essential for learning how that box worked. Hint: that is not a delay on Duchess, but unaccented 16th notes.
