  • An authentic transcription and performance of the keyboard parts played by Tony Banks on In The Cage as performed by Genesis on the 1981 tour and Three Sides Live. Played with a Sequential Prophet-6, Behringer and Korg ARP Odysseys, ARP Quadra samples, and a Behringer Vocoder VC340.

    Amazing, accurate and vibe-full ! Then you think, this video portraits only eight minutes of a keyboard performance that goes on for a couple of hours concert. In the same concert you would also have on stage four other talented musicians who would play with the same skill and artistry ... QUESTION: why people these days spend 100 dollars to see people on stage doing nothing ???

      If you ever get to see me play this stuff with the Genesis Show, the other four members are excellent indeed.

    Bonus points for shirt. Sounds are so authentic! Can I ask what your top right axe is and was the opening swells and lead from that or a VST?
    Also- my heathen 9 yr old daughter walked in on the intro and asked “is this one of those meditation videos?” Kids today. Sheesh.
    Edit- oh you listed then gear at the end, sorry. Still not sure what the opening phase pad was though?

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  3 роки тому +2

      The opening pad is Synth Magic Quadra, a third party instrument for Native Instruments Kontakt. So, they are samples from the Polyphonic Synth section of the ARP Quadra with a model of the built in Phase Shifter, and that goes through my vintage Boss CE-1 stereo chorus. I’m using the Arturia KeyLab 61 mkII with a Moog expression pedal to control it.

      Matt Thomas Overdrive holy Crap that is an answer if there ever was one. I need to get that plug in. So you needed to use the pedal to get that phase or was it just enhancing it ?

      I just use the pedal to lower the volume when the organ part is faded in.

    Hi Matt, I really appreciate your covers and I study them carefully. Did you produce anything on Under a Volcano? Thank you

      Not yet. I’m going to finish up the last two videos based around my Yamaha CP80 (One For The Vine and Duke’s Travels) then move over to my Hammond organ and do a Seconds Out series with my RMI piano and Pro Soloist, Dance on a Volcano will be in that batch.

    So, you're using the Korg and/or Behringer ARP Odyssey sounds to get the lead "Pro Soloist" sound in the solo - do I have that right? That is so dead-on! The portamento is perfect.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  3 роки тому +1

      I’m recreating the ARP Quadra lead. The Pro Soloist is a single oscillator, but the Quadra Lead section, like the Odyssey, is two. Unlike the Odyssey, the Quadra Lead section has separate portamento controls for each oscillator, which Tony Banks used on just about every live lead patch in the 80s. So each of my Odysseys is a single oscillator with one having more portamento than the other.

      Where is the error? Since these are educational videos, I like to point out wrong pitches, etc in the comments so people are able to learn the correct part.

    Thank you so much for posting these videos Matt. You did an amazing job of figuring these out and playing them. These songs have been a huge inspiration to my keyboard playing since the self-titled album came out and I discovered a lot of their great music from both the 80s & 70s.
    I know you have the 2nd version of the Pro Soloist, but do I understand correctly that you layered a couple synths together to get the ARP Quadra sound for that solo? I got online found one in a thrift store this week for $70! No doubt needs work and some broken controls, but what am amazing find.
    I bought the original model Pro Soloist Tony used. I sold it in 2015 and replaced it with a soft synth of it which comes really close. The Quadra still sounds a bit different, but did work really well in the medley Tony did.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  3 роки тому

      First of all, congratulations on that Quadra. I would totally buy that from you.
      I use two Odyssey clones MIDIed together and one routes into the other’s external input. One oscillator has portamento, the other doesn’t.

    • @n8goulet
      @n8goulet 3 роки тому

      I must have mis-worded that about the Quadra. A person online was telling the story recently about his find. Wish I had talked to you first because he sold it so someone on the FB group. Has broken sliders and doubtful it turns on.
      I had have a Pro Soloist identical to Tony's. I sold it in 2015, and it's in Paris now.
      That technique worked well to layer those Odyssey clones together.

    Hey Matt, during the chorus with your left hand are you playing arpeggiated triplets back and forth eg.) GAB - BAG - ABC - CBA along with the fifths you’re playing with the right?

      Ok, so the RH chords are major triads (Eb 2nd inversion and Ab 1st inversion) on 1 34 67 910 12 in 12/8. The LH is 1 2& 4 5& 7 8& 10 11& on do re me me re do, re do te te do re in Bb natural minor. The next phrase is the same rhythm, Db minor root position and Ab major 1st inversion, LH te te do, do do te.

      Just about every live version without a drum machine speeds up. Compare the final verse of Behind the Lines to the first. It’s a whole other groove.

    Matt, do you guys cover tracks from the Genesis (shapes) album as well? That would be very interesting to see, I think that was a real watershed in Tony's setup. For example, I was listening to It's Gonna Get Better (love that track) and there seems to be a very nice Rhodes sound that I can't pinpoint. Maybe even the CP70 with the right EQ?
    BTW, you probably saw this before, but super interesting interview where they go lengths about his 1978 setup.
    thegenesisarchive.co.uk/contemporary-keyboard-july-1987-tony-banks-feature/
    I still can't hear when he is using the Polymoog other than the big sweeps. But replacing the RMI, means he probably did the distorted piano leads with it as well. Would have been interesting for him to add a MXR distortion to the CP...

      We’ve only done 1976/77 and 1981/82, and were working on 1980 when coronavirus hit. We did add the Mama Tour version of Keep It Dark as a bonus track to the 1982 sets. Hopefully we’ll do it someday...although Illegal Alien and the Turn It On Again Blues Brothers medley are problematic. Rhodes is the piano on the studio Your Own Special Way and It’s Gonna Get Better, but is also used as a layer with a real piano (One For The Vine) or CP70 (Say It’s Alright Joe) on a few tracks. Polymoog is used on many of the And Then There Were Three tracks, studio and live, and you’re right, replaced the RMI parts for the 70s songs. The Quadra and Prophet split the Polymoog duties in the early 80s.

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 I was aware of the rhodes on Your Own Special Way, but as far as I know that was the only single time Tony recorded with a rhodes. I did see a Wurlitzer in the background at his home studio in some interview, but never heard it in any recordings. Could have it been a rhodes patch on the Synclavier?
      Also, do you reckon the organ solo on That's All is Synclavier or Prophet 10? I love that sound, and I've read both according to different sources...

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  4 роки тому

      Herman Ringer definitely a Rhodes on studio Gonna Get Better. The overtones and sustain pedal behavior are pretty telltale to my ear, I have a Rhodes. The organ solo on That’s All is definitely Synclavier, check out the 1984 Keyboard mag interview. Live it sounds chewy like it’s going through a Phase 100. Same setup as the 1986 Apocalypse in 9/8 organ solo: Synclavier lead upper manual, Prophet 10 chords lower manual.

    • @MrHermanRinger
      @MrHermanRinger 4 роки тому

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 I just listened again and you're absolutely right. Unmistakeable rhodes noises, through chorus (prob Tony's favoured Chorus Ensemble). How weird is that! And thanks for the Synclavier confirmation.
