- MUSIC: Neil Sedaka / LYRICS: Phil Cody
Released in the U.S. in the Fall of 1974, "Laughter in the Rain" reached #1 on the Billboard Top 100 chart on February 1, 1975. It was Sedaka's comeback hit in America (after a string of hit singles in the early 1960s), and the first of several 70s hits for him. The song had previously been a hit in England, where it was first released.

On Friday, December 7,1974 I went out on my first date with my wife to the North Forty in Ithaca. I took her home at about 2:00am. Went home and couldn’t sleep. At about8:00am I missed her so much I went over to her apartment woke her up, she got dressed and we took a nice long walk through the streets of Cortland,NY in a slow steady drizzle. We were so in love and this song had just come out and we to this day feel like it was written for that day! Got married on August 9, 1975! Thank you Neil Sedaka!
Got married August 16, 1975....that s close....lol
I love to hear that!!! Congratilations!!!

Sweet! I grew up in Sterling, NY, on Lake Ontario in the 80s, and there was this little bar and grill called the South Forty.
Thanks for sharing that beautiful memory. We need more memories and music like this in this day and age. So many songs from that era were filled with goodness and positivity. We lived through very beautiful times.
February 10th 2012 I was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer I was also given a 10% chance that I would survive! 4 days into my hospital stay it had rained outside and I remember asking God, you get me out of this sane and alive and I will never take for granted another rainy day. Well I survived cancer and I'm coming up on my 10-year anniversary and with keeping my promise when it's storming outside I still find laughter in the rain! Still listening January 29th 2022 ❤️🎶❤️

I was born in 70! The greast era for music! Neil, abba, carpenters, john denver, bread! These were true singers, artists! They could play instruments and single simple songs with a message., they made you want to listen!
We will never see a decade like that again. It was the golden age.
Feb 1970. Those old cassettes my parents had such as Carpenters, Stylistics etc much the same as yourself, I listened to throughout my childhood and still I go back to those artists even today. It all takes me back to a much more innocent period of my life. Justin Beiber and co just don’t quite cut it for me…..

My grandfather passed in 1979. I would give anything to spend even a rainy day with him. I miss him every day. Love you grandpa.
My father has also passed away in 1979, with a massive heart attack, till today very few days passes by without thinking of him & shedding tears & this eternal tune brings so many memories on him. my father my Hero.
You have my deepest sympathy and prayers. That is how my grandfather passed. Heart attack.

Me !
November 1977, I saw him sing this song at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. What a great day.
I'll bet that was a glorious time for you. I wish that I could have been there!
I grew up in public housing on the southside of Chicago, aka "Hell on earth". But my dad always had WLS on the radio in the morning before he went to work. Music like this helped this black kid get through the madness of growing up in the projects in the 70's with a level head. So much great music in that decade, both black and white.
From Joliet, that's one of best things I've ever heard.
Music can shelter, cure, and educate a mind. It can also do the opposite if we let it. Your father injected the good into you.
Bro....black n white music was a different thing years ago. We can get there again....but it really hurts :( America was made great by Motown and real music like that. Very crazy whats happened since, its just going to take people to bring it back to those 70's songs.
@@RasCricketSmallAxe Yes, and as you say; "back to the roots", in the case of the 70s, then we know that there is something called age! Well, it used to be better, because we're still the ones who get it! A special spirit, traits, drive and visions. We just have to get it again! 😇
I grew up NW burbs of Chicago in the 70’s as well. I used to watch my dad shave while WLS was on the bathroom radio. But after he left I turned on WBMX for some soul and dance music. I never saw color in music in the 60,70,80,90’s. Which is why we all lived peacefully and with respect. Unlike today’s so called music. We are divided and unfortunately today’s music isn’t bringing us together.
We need Marvin more today than ever before.
Thank God for the 70's .... anyone who didn't experience life back then missed one of the best times in history.
I think sweet honesty perfume from Avon. There was a tee shirt you could buy with it. And my 14 yr old boyfriend meeting me on the porch. Swear it's true. Just young mutual admiration, with an exciting 'love'.
I'd go back to the 70s and even redo my 4 yrs in the United States Marine Corps, just to stay in the 70s,...1973-1977.
Not only.. thank .. 50s..60s.. for paving the road...
Don’t forget the 60s.
Born in 1973!
Sedaka and Carole King- people simply have no idea how they created so much of sounds of the 60s and 70s that we adore.
They definitely have created time stamps and as we are all getting older, I sure hope they know that.
Exactly, and with a career spanning six decades, Neil Sedaka both a gifted songwriter and top-selling artist, was never inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame which is a travesty in comparison to the lack of talent today who can't sing even with auto-tune or know what a chord is.
I'm completely awed when I remember the entire eclectic beautiful music contributed by the assorted variety of musicians from the many different genres. The 1970's are one of the greatest eras of music in my experience.
Yes, quite a partnership.
@@robertlehmann6281 as a baby boomer I can't take today's music seriously, given the quality of music being released as I was growing up.
I remember the 1970's and listening to this song while laying in my bed thinking how beautiful the song is. I was a hopeless romantic back then (and to some degree I still am) and I just dreamed of having a girl that loved me enough to share love on such a rainy day... It still brings a thrill to my heart and makes me want to sing along with joy...

We listen to Neil Sedaka on our tube radio back in late 50s and early 60s and he had a lot of great music. He should be in the Hall of Fame if not now.
People speak of comfort food. Well, this is comfort music to me!!!
Why isn't he in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame????? Great singer and song writer.
Because this is not Rock & Roll. It's not necessary. We all know how good he is
@@ElvarMasson Willie Nelson just got inducted, he's not rock and roll, but it's not always about the music, but the entertainment that someone gave.
Why care keep listening my favorite oh carol I was in the third grade she had a twin sister they were both beautiful she won my heart I’m 75 but still remember the song married to a different lady now for 48 years love her so much and we both love carol king wow what a life we have gotten to live through
@JoeNicks389 Then, the people in charge should change the name of the awards. If it's not Rock & Roll, it's not Rock & Roll. Just call it Music Hall of Fame. Country music has no relevance to Rock & Roll. Similar to Jazz vs. Rock & Roll, Disco vs. Rock & Roll, etc. They're different genres = not the same. Anyone can say, "Well, it's music," but if people want to honour someone by inducting her or him to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, it better be a Rock & Roll musician. If he or she isn't a Rock & Roll musician, then it's obvious (to people who don't need a reality check) that the person involved doesn't belong there. Simple
@@ElvarMasson I agree, but at least he's in the songwriters HOF.

God bless the music and artists of the 70s, they were really great musicians with superb songs! My favorite music today in 2021 still is the 70s as well as the 50s, 60s, 80s and 90s……and nothing beyond that. 70s music was so upbeat. A time I'm proud to have lived through and will never forget.
There's only one problem with this song--it's too short!

I see no problem with it. Just right.
Something about the piano intro makes me want to put it in a loop and keep playing it over and over again. Very well done. His vocals are top notch on it. He doesn't reach to try and get some notes and keeps everything in range as a true professional should.
I do agree
That’s way I like to ❤️
One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. A true classic...a masterpiece.
And you probably have, believe it or not, Sir Elton John for it. Back in the early 70's, Neil's career wasn't going very far due to the music climate at the time and Elton was like a major Neil Sedaka fan. They happened to bump into each other at a party or a convention or someplace like that and Elton had, at the time, his Rocket Records (his vanity label like Apple was for the Beatles, Grunt Records was for the Jefferson Starship, etc) and when Elton found out Neil didn't have a record contract said come over and record for me. He did and the first song released from those sessions was Bad Blood which Elton did background vocals on (which is kind of obvious if you pay attention during the chorus) and I believe it hit #1. Not long, Laughter in the Rain came out and was a major #1 hit. I almost want to say Elton did background vocals on that song to and I think I MIGHT hear them but not 100% sure. I am sure he didn't but still would not be surprised if he did and the vocals are just kind of buried deep in the mix as I am sure Elton might not have even wanted Neil to have two hits in a row with his (Elton's) background vocals on it being obvious with the way I heard Elton's ego was at least at the time. Kind of like, love ya mate but not at the risk of my OWN career!! lol Personally, I like both songs but think Laughter is a WAY better song than Bad Blood was and will listen to that song 10 times in a row before I listen to Bad Blood once. That's my story and I am sticking to it. :)
@@Looking1231 Laughter in the Rain was #1 in '74. Bad Blood hit #1 in '75.
@@hesterpie1 Thank you! I had thought Bad Blood came out first. Now I know.
@@Looking1231 I just saw an interview with Neil Sedaka earlier today. In 1974, Neil was listening to the radio and heard someone else's version of this song playing. He had already recorded the song but it hadn't been scheduled for release yet. He called Elton and asked him to release his version within 5 days and Elton did that. Neil's version quickly overtook the other one and ended up hitting #1 on the Feb. 1, 1975 Billboard Hot 100 chart.
yes you are right there.
I was born in 1966, and I remember hearing this song for the first time as a teenager in the early '80s. To me, this has always been an incredibly beautiful song that is also a little bit sad. This song is timeless, it was just as beautiful when first played in 1975 as it is now in 2024.
The way he drags that minor chord across to major in "OOOHH...I hear laughter" is just so brilliant. I feel it in my stomach. Thank you Neil.👏🏽🧡

Today's music is garbage compared to the golden era of AM pop and new music makes me ill inside and angry. Thank you UA-cam for letting us go back and remember these great pop icons, when humanity was full force.
Bryan Russell I totally agree Bryan
Hard to believe its gone,it seems like it was science fiction.
Your right this is true talent, and the 70s esp early to mid was great caravan hols every year at my auntys van no toilet no shower no tv! but we loved it played on beach with shells climbing cliffs and hot dog off van on way for a coke outside pub on summer nights with parents was a real treat 😊😊
É verdade Bryan! O UA-cam é o meu refúgio.
Excellent comment
Sedaka's voice and the sound of the bass guitar gives you that cool feel of a monsoon rain in the afternoon in the countryside. The piano paints the grassy hills and the strings the gentle sway of the trees. The sax sounded like the distant thunder. And percussions sounding like raindrops hitting the roof. Love listening to this in stereo days while looking out the window to the downpour outside.
This was a massive massive hit for him. Absolutely gorgeous song! Played non stop on radios!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
I can literally smell the summer rain and joy! Still enjoying this in 2023 in Singapore
Im so glad i experienced this decade..i get quite emotional when i think of th memories..compare that to todays music, culture and fashion..
We had this 45 growing up
I have older siblings
I was 4 when this came out
I still have the 45❤
Thank God for recordings. Opportunity to go back and listen to the REAL songs/music is awesome.
Hello Regina, How are you doing?
One of the best chorus entries in pop songwriting history. When it hits that key change going into “ooo...I hear laughter in the rain...”, it takes off like a rocket! And Neil’s voice is perfect for that moment. Brilliant! Thank you Neil and Phil for this great hit! 🎶❤️
Exactly! That key change up a min 3rd lifts the chorus beautifully. A nice discreet shift back into the original key for the next verse allows him to repeat the trick for the subsequent choruses. (big shift up, sneaky shift back) Very clever songwriting going on under the hood in a lot of Mr Sedaka's songs.
Totally agree with you
Its the tempo change with the key change and his skill to layer the music thst made him such a fantastic composer. Absolutely love this song and his head wobble just cracks me up with joy
Just one of THOSE songs that when you hear it, you tell yourself "Man I need to listen to this more"
I've been on a 70s kick lately. The vibes from the songs are nothing like anything...before or after. I'm biased of course...haha....born 1970
Unfortunately, I've just spent most of my life not thinking about are remembering this song. I've never heard it on the radio much and I've listened *A LOT*. Whenever I am reminded of it, I just think it's such a shame that I haven't heard any more.
@@HDGuruGuy Nah, this song doesn't have a specific time style. I never knew when it was from until now.
Yes, it is. Absolutely
I am so young for this time, but I just love it! The best sounding music was back then.
Neil Sadaka. That soft voice, mild melody ruled the air waves. The sound that calms.
could'nt have said it better....................
Just makes you feel good.....................
There are songs that just make you happy...this is one of them.Another one is 59th st song by simon and garfunkle
Makes you feel good,nuff said............
And he done blows up real good!!!
At the end of the era of AM radio, top 40 hits and pre-disco, this was the signature tune of the mid 70’s, it’s timeless and it’s a classic. Thanks for the memories Neil.
Strolling along country roads with my baby
It starts to rain, it begins to pour
Without an umbrella we're soaked to the skin
I feel a shiver run up my spine
I feel the warmth of her hand in mine
Oh, I hear laughter in the rain,
Walking hand in hand with the one I love
Oh, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside
After a while we run under a tree
I turn to her and she kisses me
There with the beat of the rain on the leaves
Softly she breathes and I close my eyes
Sharing our love under stormy skies
Oh, I hear laughter in the rain,
Walking hand in hand with the one I love
Oh, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside
I feel the warmth of her hand in mine
Oh, I hear laughter in the rain,
Walking hand in hand with the one I love
Oh, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside
Oh, I hear laughter in the rain,
Walking hand in hand with the one I love
Oh, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside

You look to young to know about this
Yes, it's just soo romantic...
I sometimes love the rain watching it from my window even walking in it on a warm day.
I LOVE THIS SONG! It reminds me of the good old days when music was played with live instruments & REAL vocals! He has a powerful smooth voice that transcends throughout time.
You are SO RIGHT Totteacher. This songs brings back so many positive memories of good times. I am 55 and seek out this song when I want to remember the good times when life was so much simplier. Love the feelings this songs brings to my mind and heart!
Just makes you feel GOOD! Glad we still have Neil....
Totteacher123 CC this is what I call MUSIC
Well said, mate. Couldn't agree more. Modern music sucks, big time
Heavenly song
Neil Sadaka has one of those timeless iconic voices. He doesn't need a lot of theatrical special effects. Many singers don't have that.
I will ALWAYS love this song!
Me too😅
Yo tambien
Nobody could sing that song better than neil sedaka that song belongs to him only. My favorite song. I still really enjoy this song today.
Just class, what a time to be alive back in the seventies. Great music and no mobile phones, people actually talking to each other
A perfect piece of melodic brilliance from the irreplaceable Neil Sedaka... and a kind of America that no longer exists. The 60s and 70s. Count your blessings if you were there.
I do and I was......................
I know and count your blessing as we get older to remember too,the America that was.
@@porkfied ~ Oh I remember how it was, and think about it almost everyday. Especially with the current situation we're facing. I don't have to give names. You know who they are.
@@slimshine953 I think about it everyday too, everywhere I go now I hear thump,thump...thump rap crap and I say to myself, man take me back to when music was great. This country will be done in10 to 20 years it will become a shithole,I was born here so I see the way its going.I lived in the projects in the Bronx on Randall ave in the 60s no problem living in those back then, but now forget it all war zones everywhere.
@@porkfied ~ I hear ya, and glad to talk with a kindred spirit. I can't stand the thump thump, rap junk either. I grew up with the great music too, and you know what I mean.
I think you may be right about where the US will be in a decade or two, and it's frightening.
Neil Sedaka is a one of a kind. Great lyrics, great song, great voice. So proud to be part of the 60's and 70's.
We saw Neil in Cardiff a few years back. Brilliant entertainer, writer and performer and he’s been successful since the 50s along with Carole King his ex and James Taylor. What people don’t realise is that he is also an accredited classical concert pianist. Nowadays he writes children’s books but all through Covid, he was releasing daily podcasts with his music to lift our spirits.
HAPPY 84TH BIRTHDAY

Listening to this in 2019 from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA!
I was 13 when I first heard Neil Sedaka. I loved sitting out on our front porch listening to him on the radio. Great song.
What a lovely song
I was born in Japan in 1965 but raised in Seattle during the '70s listening to this song on KJR radio. I am now at mid-50s and still like rainy days because I have beautiful memories of winter in Seattle where rains a lot.
Everyday xxx
listening to this on a rainy seattle day lol
One of the most talented singer song writers of all time ✌🏻
