Weightlifting Fairy is SO GOOD. Sometimes I don't wanna watch amnesia or revenge plots or annoying love triangles with evil, manipulative creeps... and that's okay 🌞🌻
If you want something lighthearted and warm to get you through your dark quarantine days, it is the show to watch.

I started watching K Dramas with "Korean Odyssey" , I got hooked then. With "It's Okay to Not Be Okay", I find that I re-watch episodes because I missed a the parallels between the animation and the story. I get hung up on the ambiguity of the chapter titles and the episode. I enjoy the director's shout outs to other K dramas and american movies, as well as Korean folklore, the play on words where Psyche can be a beautiful maiden, a butterfly, ones breath or soul -- If you watched the drama you may understand what I am getting at. I have grown to love the characters and the struggle and the definition of what is family. For this series I listen to the vlogs and the various theories on the characters. The only thing I am sad about, if your circle are not a K drama fans - you cant let it out with a good discussion - most guys are not K drama fans. So with work starting again on Monday, I hope to conquer this addiction.

sky castle is hands down my favorite kdrama. despite being a tv show it actually was really relatable as a student in a competitive school environment. it also came out when all the college scandals were surfacing so it was so trippy to see something in the show and then a week later read a news article about the exact same thing. highly recommend!!

A common trope I've seen in the K-drama's I've watched: there's always a time skip lol. Either in the beginning something traumatic happens, and then the drama really starts like one year later, or something dramatic happens towards the end, and then it time skips a year or two afterwards

I loved this video so much! I related to so much especially the dubbed videos 😂. My first drama that I remember watching in Korean was Let’s go to school Sangdoo, an early 2000 drama. I remembered sharing a room with my sister and when she watched her dramas, I would secretly watch it with her from the top bunk of our bunk bed. (I was in elementary school when she was in high school). I have watched a ton of great kdramas but my all time favorites are Autumn In My Heart, Oh My Venus, Goblin, and Fated to Love You.
I have lots to recommend but I would also recommend Goblin to Wes! The cinematography and story line is really well done. The chemistry between the actors are also great, and is an overall great drama. The writer is the known for writing the popular dramas, Descendants of the Sun, Mister Sunshine, Heirs, and more.

Omg yes, I agree! There are some kiss scenes that are awkward, especially when they stay in the same position for awhile without moving a joint lol! like they briefly mentioned, not all kdramas are romance-based!! maybe that's not everyone's cup of tea so i'd like to recommend some others:
    - school 2013 - it's about FRIENDSHIP and the hardships that come with being a teenager, coming of age/slice of life type of story. tears will be shed.
    - suits - based on the american show, which i never watched but if you like stories about law and suspense/plot twists, this one's for you!
    - my mister - this is a real heartwrenching story with an MC who is just trying to live a day at a time. don't be deterred by the ML and FL age difference bc their relationship is not what you think

Before I watch, I hope they discuss 'It's Okay not to be Okay' just because I'm a chick and that's the only one I've ever watched!!
The reason I've avoided kdramas in general is because, from what I've seen, I really dislike the portrayal of women I've come across often in them (but I'm not saying they're all like that, just clips I've seen), especially when it comes to having autonomy to not be "extremely scared" or "shy" when it comes to romantic/sexual stuff. Like, I understand some women are, but many are not, and that balance doesn't seem to be portrayed on screen which frustrates me and feels a little gross at times.
But, I loved this video and didn't mean to make anything negative, sorry

    • @kristysk81
      @kristysk81 4 роки тому +3

I still watch Kdrama but I agree that back in the day the women were so shy, quiet and didn't stick up for herself. It annoyed me. However these days there are still some good dramas with strong personality girls! For example, the girls mentioned Strong Girl Bong Soon. Love her!

It was interesting to listen to your conversation about seeing yourself on screen. As a half-Korean, I remember watching my first K-Drama, Life is Beautiful (2010, first drama with gay main characters I think) and thinking about identifying closely with how family members interacted with each other. I felt at home. Watching American dramas/sitcoms, I'd always feel, but this isn't how my family thinks or feels, am I missing something about what families should be. I felt like a visitor in my own country's culture. After watching Life is Beautiful I realized why I felt that way and found representation in how I might think or feel.

i'm about to recommend all of choi siwon's recent filmography lol
-she was pretty for literally the best written male character/love interest in a romcom drama, HE DESERVED BETTER
-revolutionary love for its commentary on social classes and privilege, but still in a romcom-esque setting
-my fellow citizens (i feel like this one is criminally underrated bc its not a common genre for dramas) for more of a political satire involving a con man and cop who end up falling in love
-SF8 is his newest project (its not out until late august), is an anthology of scifi vignettes (think black mirror) each one exploring a different aspect of the genre...his episode specifically is about a virtual reality dating app

My first drama was in 2011, Coffee Prince because Hulu recommended it on a day I was home sick with the flu. That became a life changing few days of binge watching as many dramas as I could before I got well- lol it may have delayed my recovery from the flu. Anyways, kdrama led to kpop, Korean cooking, and trying to learn to speak Korean, but it also opened me up to Cdramas and Jdramas, and many other cultures I was never curious about before. Broadened my whole mind about the world and made me so much more curious.

My top 3 favorite KDramas are Angel Eyes, Ugly Alert, and My Love from the Stars, based solely on the number of times I've cried, laughed, and swooned while watching it and how great the soundtrack is. Goblin would be in my top 5 because of the leads and its awesome soundtrack.

I've seen all of these dramas and they are all entertaining, but if I had the order them (from best to average) Goblin wins HANDS DOWN! The cinematography is beautiful, the music is lovely, the relationships and how they're connected is fun and lastly, which no one mentioned the bromance in this drama is amazing (and all very attractive to look at)!
****SPOILER (MAYBE)**** The only thing I don't care for is that I wished the bride was not as young considering how old the goblin is, it would have been nice if she had already graduated high school before they met.
    My personal ranking:
    Goblin
    Weightlifting Fairy
    W
Also-side note: If anyone is interested in fantasy/magical type dramas you might like Chinese Dramas as well- I watched Ashes of Love during this quarantine and I honestly I loved it so much that I've watched it basically twice- it is like 60'something episodes, but they go fast and they seem pretty short-like even thou the time says 45 minutes, the intro (which u can skip) is like 2 minutes and the outro (i guess that's what it's called) is like another 2 or 3 minutes...

So happy Goblin was mentioned!!! My fiance and his friend love this show. I really enjoyed it. But I am more biased with Strong Girl Bong Soon. The cheese factor was strong.

I have yet to watch the other two buT OMG YES W IS SO GOOD UGH Felt like a Deathnote type situation where at every turn it feels like the writers wrote themselves into a deadend but they somehow manage to write themselves out of it AND IT MAKES SENSE AND DOESN'T CREATE NEW PLOT HOLES. Honestly those people deserve awards. They're goddamn geniuses.
Casual plug for "My Girlfriend is Gumiho" that's also a fantasy... hehehe My fav kdrama hands-down. Also will take Jen's suggestion. I like slice of life too~

Hi guys, thank you for another beautiful episode! Love this topic about Kdramas 😍👍 My recommendation would be My Mister and Hospital Playlist that I recently watched on Netflix. Both of them are like healing shows but in a very opposite ways, totally can see myself rewatch them both. Check it out!! 🥰

I tend to love kdramas with strong women characters and i hate cheesy storylines. One of my favourite strong career women-centered kdramas is Search:WWW. Some of the really good ones I like too are PRISON PLAYBOOK (focused on a pro baseball player who went to jail, and it covers many background stories of his cell mates), and HOSPITAL PLAYLIST (a group of best friends who work together as surgeons in a hospital. It's a slice of life kinda drama. Bonus, in the drama, they form a band and have jam sessions every week! The songs are so good and they really learned how to play those instruments. Each episode is over 1 hour, so there are 12 episodes in season 1, and they are set for season 2!!). Also, many people might disagree with these two kdramas, but I think Wes might like MEMORIES OF THE ALHAMBRA and THE KING: ETERNAL MONARCH. MOTA is about an AR game gone wrong. The settings and CGI in this kdrama are just amazinggggg and the AR concept is so cool. Romance isn't a big part of the drama, which is nice, because it focuses a lot on the development of the character and mystery in the plot. TKEM (which has been receiving a lot of backlash) was written by the same writer as Goblin, and I really really like it. It's about time travel and parallel worlds. The fun, mystery, and romance in it are well-balanced. And not to forget IT'S OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY!!! Loveeeeee this drama.
I started watching MOTA, TKEM, and IOTNBO because of the female leads (Park Shin-hye, Kim Go-eun, Seo Yea-ji) , while it was all my first time watching projects of the male leads. And I ended up being impressed by Hyun bin, Lee Min-ho, and Kim Soo-hyun. Oh, WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS and HYENA are really good too.

W had a super strong start and enticing fun plot... but the ending was very unsatisfying..
Goblin was by far the best K drama I’ve watched, ever. From the first min of the first episode all the way till the end, so many plot twists and a lot of mysteries fans could theorize while it was playing, the super fun characters, as well as dips of meaning of life here and there..I was laughing and crying and sometimes laughing and crying at the same time... all around a drama that’s extremely hard to top. It’s been a couple of years now, still think it’s the best. Also the cinematography of the drama was so good you would think you were watching movies. It made Quebec a super popular tourist city for Asians that last time I was there there I saw “Goblin” tourist groups everywhere ! And of course the theme songs are also played everywhere 😅
Weight lifting fairy is a fun lighthearted one. Could always watch that while I have dinner 😂
